Monitoring of Grinding Wheel Wear in Surface Grinding Process by Using Laser Scanning Micrometer

  • This paper deals with the monitoring of grinding wheel wear in surface grinding process. A monitoring system, which makes use of a laser scanning micrometer, is developed to measure the circumferential shape as well as the axial profile of grinding wheel. The monitoring system is applied to surface grinding processes. The experimental results show that the developed monitoring system is useful not only for monitoring the amount of wear in grinding wheel but also for evaluation the quality of ground surface and determining proper derssing time for the grinding wheel.

  • The characteristics of grinding and wear behavior of diamond wheel for grinding ceramic materials was investigated in this study. In case of $Si_3N_4$, the wear of wheel was large, the finding force was relatively stable and the fluctuation of surface roughness n small. On the other hand in case of $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$, the wear of wheel and surface roughness were decreasing, the grinding force was increasing. During grinding with vitrified bond wheel, $Si_3N_4$ shows renewal of cutting edge while $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ show glazing phenomenon of cutting grains. We have found that it possible to observe the behavior of grinding wheel by grinding ratio, grinding resistance, surface roughness and cutting edge ratio. Through the grinding experiments, it was found that grinding life of diamond wheel is 20 times for $Si_3N_4$, and 40 times fir $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$.

  • Korea High Speed Railway of which wheels have been excessively worn during the trial operation prior to opening was additionally applied with solid lubricant besides the existing oil lubricant in order to overcome such excessive wear. Therefore, it was shown that wear status has been improved in the test by which railway system including vehicles and tracks was stabilized during a year's commercial operation, comparing to that with excessive wear in the trial operation prior to opening to the public. In this connection, wheel's wear per mileage was analyzed, based on vehicles in service in order to make out the wheel's wear at present, from which the useful data relating to wheel maintenance could be obtained.

  • This study presents the wheel wear measurement results of Saemaeul train running on the conventional line. The train set included three different cars which have different shape of wheel profile including KNR and KTX profile currently used in Saemaeul. Train set was operated on Seoul-Pusan line with fixed train set formation for commercial service. Wheel wear measurements were peformed periodically. Here, we describe some results.

  • Grinding System is very difficult to examine closely wear phenomenon or dynamic characterastic because it is very complex and different from a general cutting system, Considering automatization and precision it is very important to examine closely grinding system. In this study grinding wheel surface is acquired by using computer vision system in order to explain wear and loading phenomenon. We investigate the relationship between wear and Fourier spectrum of acquired image and observe the entropy variation in the process of manufacturing.

  • In this study, through the experimental results of grinding ratio, grinding force and surface roughness with the obtained wear amount of diamond wheel and ceramic material during the grinding process, the following conclusions could be found. In the case of $Si_3N_4$, the wear of diamond wheel is large while the grinding force is stable and the range of change in surface roughness is small. for the case of $AL_2O_3$ and $ZrO_3$, while the wear of diamond wheel is getting smaller, the grinding force is increasing but the value of surface roughness is decreasing. For grinding with the vitrified bond wheel, it seems that the self-sharpening can be found for $Si_3N_4$ and the glazing effect of the cutting edge for $AL_2O_3$ and $ZrO_3$.

A Method to Optimize Stability and Wheel Wear in Railway Bogies

  • In this paper, a procedure is proposed to optimize bogie suspension parameters in view of minimizing wheel wear produced by curve negotiation, though meeting stability requirements. The problem is dealt with in the form of a constrained minimization problem, in which wheel wear evaluated over a given service scenario is introduced as the cost function to be minimized, and the requirements on vehicle stability are formulated in terms of constraints. The procedure is applied to the case of a non-powered passenger car for high-speed service, and the results obtained are discussed. It is shown that long wheelbase bogie may provide better overall performances than bogies having comparatively short wheelbase. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is performed, to define the effect on the optimization results of improving the performances of the yaw dampers in the bogie and of using a different wheel profile.

A geometrical review on the wear of rail and KTX wheel (레일과 차륜의 마모에 대한 기하학적 검토)

  • Before the complete construction of new high-speed line between Seoul and Pusan, KTX is going to operate on both new high-speed line between Seoul and Daegu and electrified conventional lines between Daegu and Pusan. Then, the wheels of KTX are going to operate on various rails such as KS50N and KS60 of conventional line as well as UIC60 of high-speed line. Also, conventional line will have a mixed traffic mode with various types of trains operating on it, such as Saemaul and Mugunghwa. Hence, this study reviews the wear phenomena of wheels and rails in geometrical point of view by comparing their profiles. The analyses of the results show that because UIC60 rail is designed for KTX, KS50N rail whose profile is similar to that of UIC60 will not have any impact on the shape of wheel wear. On the other hand, KS60 rail is expected to have partial wear on both the flange of KTX wheel and the gauge corner of the rail in the initial stages. However, the operation of the trains whose wheels have 1/20 conicity will cause partial sidewear on the inside of the rail and the movement of the contact point between KTX wheel and the rail toward the inside of the track. As a result, the flange wear of KTX wheel will be reduced and the formation of wear-equilibrium profile will be faster.

  • The purpose of this work is to general approach to numerically simulating wear in rolling and sliding contact area between wheel and rail interface based on the analysis of dynamics with general MBS package. A simulation scheme is developed that calculates the wear at a detailed level. The estimation of material removal follows Archard's wear equation which states that the reduction of volume is linearly proportional to the sliding distance, the normal applied load and the wear coefficient and inverse proportional to hardness. The main research application is the wheel-rail contact of Korea High Speed Railway.
