Correlation between Quantitative Agronomical Traits of Wheat (Triticum sp.) Genetic Resources

  • Assessment of plant genetic resources is applicable when breeding improved plant caltivars. In Korea, early maturing wheat germplasm is anticipated for wheat-rice double-cropping. In this study, we assessed five agronomical traits including days of heading after sowing(HD), days of maturity after sowing(MD), culm length(CL), ear length(EL), and thousand grain weight(TW) of 500 wheat germplasms collected form 10 different countries (Mexico, the United States, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, India, Japan, China, Turkey, Pakistan and Portugal), and grown in Korea. Besides, the correlation between the agronomical traits was analyzed using XLSTAT softerware version 2019 (Addinsoft, NY, USA). The result showed wide-ranging maturity period. Among the entire population, 2 accessions (K256306/JPN/breeding line and K256328/JPN/breeding line) that matured early were identified. Furthermore, HD showed strong correlation with MD (r=0.684) and CL (r=0.610), and weak correlation with the rest two agronomical traits (EL and TW). Overall, the results of our study provides wide spectrum of prospects, and could be applicable to breed new wheat varieties with early maturity.

Comparison of Allergy-Inducible Wheat Protein Contents among Imported and Domestic Wheat Flours in Korea

  • Wheat is a staple food in the Korean diet, which is increasingly becoming westernized. Because most domestic wheat consumption relies on imported wheat, we aimed to evaluate the allergy-inducible protein contents of commercial flours from imported and domestic wheat. Analysis of the protein contents by densitometry suggested that domestic wheat flours contain lower levels of high molecular weight glutenin and omega-gliadin (50 and 34% lower, respectively) than imported wheat flours. Therefore, domestic wheat flours are less likely to cause allergic reactions than imported wheat flours are. Based on the findings of our study, were commend increased consumption of domestic wheat flours to those who are sensitive to allergy.

Phytochemical and Antioxidant Properties of Korean Wheat Sprouts

  • Wheat is an economically important cereal worldwide and is a staple food in many countries. Extensive researches have been performed on the nutritional value and antioxidant potentials of sprouts of legumes like soybean, however very limited studies have been carried out on the sprouts of Korean wheat cultivar. The objective of this study was to investigate the phytochemical and antioxidant potentials of Korean wheat sprouts. The sprouts were grown for 10 (WS-10), 20 (WS-20), and 30 (WS-30) days at room temperature. The pH, color, chlorophyll, free amino acid, 1,1-diphenly-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and total polyphenol content of the sprout samples were determined. The pH of sprouts was increased in the older sprouts. Color values were significantly influenced by the age of sprouts. The chlorophyll content was lowest but the total free amino acid content was highest in WS-30. On the other hand, the DPPH free radical scavenging potential and total polyphenol content were lower in WS-30. The results suggested that Korean wheat sprouts could be a potential source of nutrients and natural antioxidants.

Genotypic and Environmental Effects on Cookie Quality of Korean Winter Wheat

  • Cookie baking properties and relationships between cookie baking properties and flour characteristics were evaluated for two years, 1997 and 1998, and at two locations, Suwon and Deokso, with Korean winter wheat cultivars and lines. Cookie baking parameters, except for cookie diameter and top grain score, were influenced by locations and years. Chokwang, Suwon 274, Suwon 275, Suwon 277 and Urimil showed larger cookie diameter and excellent top grain score compared to the other Korean winter wheat cultivars and lines. Among the flour characteristics, protein content, damaged starch content, alkaline water retention capacity and flour swelling volume showed high positive correlation coefficients with cookie baking parameters. Friabilin-present lines showed larger cookie diameter, suitable surface structure of cookie and softer snapping force than the friabilin-absent lines.

파키스탄 기후변화에 따른 밀생산량 모의 (Simulation of Wheat Yield under Changing Climate in Pakistan)

  • Sustainable wheat production is of paramount importance for attaining/maintaining the food self-sufficiency status of the rapidly growing nation of Pakistan. However, the average wheat yield per unit area has been dwindling in recent years and the climate-induced variations in rainfall patterns and temperature regimes, during the wheat growth period, are believed to be the reason behind this decline. Crop growth simulation models are powerful tools capable of playing pivotal role in evaluating the climate change impacts on crop yield or productivity. This study was aimed to predict the plausible variations in the wheat yield for future climatic trends so that possible mitigation strategies could be explored. For this purpose, Aquacrop model v. 4.0 was employed to simulate the wheat yield under present and future climatology of the largest agricultural province of Punjab in Pakistan. The data related to crop phenology, management and yield were collected from the experimental plots to calibrate and validate the model. The future climate projections were statistically downscaled from five general circulation models (GCMs) and compared with the base line climate from 1980 to 2010. The model was fed with the projected climate to simulate the wheat yield based on the RCP (representative concentration pathways) 4.5 and 8.5. Under the worst, most likely future scenario of temperature rise and rainfall reduction, the crop yield decreased and water footprint, especially blue, increased, owing to the elevated irrigation demands due to accelerated evapotranspiration rates. The modeling results provided in this study are expected to provide a basic framework for devising policy responses to minimize the climate change impacts on wheat production in the area.

Study on the correlation links between parameters of weather conditions and indicators of seed productivity of plants of spring wheat (Tr. aestivum L.) in Irkutsk region

  • In Irkutsk region the plants of spring wheat (Tr. aestivum) grow in three agro-ecological zones: steppe, forest-steppe and subtaiga. Due to this reason, the paper determines the coefficients of correlation between the indicators field germination of seeds, plant safety, productivity, temperature and moisture content of the plant habitat for each zone. The zonal moisture saving features of soil treatment for growing wheat plants (Tr. aestivum) are discussed on the basis of these data.

Evaluation of Grain Zinc and Iron Contents of Wheat Germplasm

  • Wheat is the staple food crop in the word, but wheat products have a low bioavailability of iron and zinc. So in the developing world, where wheat is a staple food, it suffers from micronutrients deficiency. This study was conducted to generate wheat varieties with enhanced grain Zn and Fe contents. Sixty wheat resource were cultivated over 2 years (2019-2021) in the field of NICS, Jeonju, Republic of Korea, to identify agronomic traits. Wheat grains were ground using grinder and analyzed whole wheat flour protein contents and Fe and Zn contents using ICP-OES. The average contents of Zn and Fe grain were 4.6 mg/100g (2.4~8.8 mg/100g) and 4.5 mg/100g (2.4~7.9 mg/100g), respectively. The contents of Fe and Zn in the wheat grain had a positive correlation with the protein content of whole wheat flour, but there was no correlation with heading date (4.22~5.27) and the thousand kernel weight (21.3~57.5 g). Although there was year variation, six resources with high contents of Fe (>5.2 mg/100 g) and Zn (>5.3 mg/100 g) grain in 2 years were selected. These results provide information for selecting breeding materials for biofortified wheat, and further studies on germplasms genetic variations and bioavailability are needed.

파키스탄 밀-옥수수 재배시스템의 기후변화를 반영한 필요수량 산정 (Projecting the climatic influences on the water requirements of wheat-rice cropping system in Pakistan)

  • During the post green revolution era, wheat and rice were the main crops of concern to cater the food security issues of Pakistan. The use of semi dwarf high yielding varieties along with extensive use of fertilizers and surface and ground water lead to substantial increase in crop production. However, the higher crop productivity came at the cost of over exploitation of the precious land and water resources, which ultimately has resulted in the dwindling production rates, loss of soil fertility, and qualitative and quantitative deterioration of both surface and ground water bodies. Recently, during the past two decades, severe climate changes are further pushing the Pakistan's wheat-rice system towards its limits. This necessitates a careful analysis of the current crop water requirements and water footprints (both green and blue) to project the future trends under the most likely climate change phenomenon. This was done by using the FAO developed CROPWAT model v 8.0, coupled with the statistically-downscaled climate projections from the 8 Global Circulation Models (GCMs), for the two future time slices, 2030s (2021-2050) and 2060s (2051-2080), under the two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs): 4.5 and 8.5. The wheat-rice production system of Punjab, Pakistan was considered as a case study in exploration of how the changing climate might influence the crop water requirements and water footprints of the two major crops. Under the worst, most likely future scenario of temperature rise and rainfall reduction, the crop water requirements and water footprints, especially blue, increased, owing to the elevated irrigation demands originating from the accelerated evapotranspiration rates. A probable increase in rainfall as envisaged by some GCMs may partly alleviate the adverse impacts of the temperature rise but the higher uncertainties associated with the predicated rainfall patterns is worth considering before reaching a final conclusion. The total water footprints were continuously increasing implying that future climate would profoundly influence the crop evapotranspiration demands. The results highlighted the significance of the irrigation water availability in order to sustain and improve the wheat-rice production system of Punjab, Pakistan.

밀 유전 배경에서 호밀 B 염색체가 감수분열 염색체 접합에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Rye B chromosome on Meiotic Chromosome Association in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Genetic Background)

  • 이 연구에서는 밀 첨가 계통의 생식세포분열시, 호밀 B 염색체가 염색체 접합에 미치는 영향을 관찰하였다. 밀 첨가 계통은 동조관계에 있는 Leymus mollis와 L. racemosus 염색체를 각각 하나씩 가지고 있다. 밀의 유전적 배경에서 두 Leymus염색체의 이동은 genomic in situ hybridization에 의하여 확인되었다. 호밀 B 염색체를 가지고 있지 않은 밀 첨가 계통의 생식세포 제1중기 분열기에 두 Leymus 염색체의 대부분은 일가염색체를 보였다(98.1 ± 0.5%). 반면에 호밀 B 염색체를 가지고 있는 밀 첨가 계통에서 Leymus 이가염색체의 빈도(10.3 ± 0.2%)는 호밀 B 염색체를 가지고 있지 않은 밀 첨가 계통의 Leymus이가염색체의 빈도(1.9 ± 0.5%)보다 높았다. 호밀 B 염색체를 가지고 있지 않은 밀 첨가 계통에서는 비정상적인 구조를 가지고 있는 이가염색체가 관찰되었다. 반면, 비록 매우 낮은 빈도이지만 호밀 B 염색체를 가지고 있는 밀 첨가 계통에서는 정상적인 형태를 보이는 이가염색체가 확인되었다. 호밀 B 염색체의 영향은 또한 보통밀과 L. racemosus염색체 사이의 이가염색체의 형성을 유도하였으며, 보통밀과 L. mollis 염색체 사이의 삼가염색체의 형성도 유도하였다. 뿐만 아니라 보통밀 염색체 사이에서 초과 교차가 일어나는 것을 확인하였으며, 이러한 현상으로 원, 막대, 그리고 후라이팬 모양의 일반적인 이가염색체의 형태가 아닌 막대모양이나 응축된 형태의 보통밀 이가염색체가 확인되었다.
