습식분쇄에 의한 입자크기 변화에 따른 분쇄입자의 종횡비 거동 (Aspect Ratio Behavior of Grinding Particles with Variation of Particle Size by Wet Grinding)

  • As a case study on aspect ratio behavior, Kaolin, zeolite, TiO2, pozzolan and diatomaceous earth minerals are investigated using wet milling with 0.3 mm media. The grinding process using small media of 0.3 pai is suitable for current work processing applications. Primary particles with average particle size distribution D50, ~6 ㎛ are shifted to submicron size, D50 ~0.6 ㎛ after grinding. Grinding of particles is characterized by various size parameters such as sphericity as geometric shape, equivalent diameter, and average particle size distribution. Herein, we systematically provide an overview of factors affecting the primary particle size reduction. Energy consumption for grinding is determined using classical grinding laws, including Rittinger's and Kick's laws. Submicron size is obtained at maximum frictional shear stress. Alterations in properties of wettability, heat resistance, thermal conductivity, and adhesion increase with increasing particle surface area. In the comparison of the aspect ratio of the submicron powder, the air heat conductivity and the total heat release amount increase 68 % and 2 times, respectively.

  • The nanoprobe based on lithography, mainly represented by SPM based technologies, has been recognized as potential application to fabricate the surface nanostructures because of its operational versatility and simplicity. The objective of the work is to suggest new mastless pattern fabrication technique using the combination of machining by nanoindenter and KOH wet etching. The scratch option of the nanoindenter is a very promising method for obtaining nanometer scale features on a large size specimen because it has a very wide working area and load range. Sample line patterns were machined on a silicon surface, which has a native oxide on it, by constant load scratch (CLS) of the Nanoindenter with a Berkovich diamond tip, and they were etched in KOH solutions to investigate chemical characteristics of the machined silicon surface. After the etching process, the convex structure was made because of masking effect of the affected layer generated by nano-scratch. On the basis of this fact, some line patterns with convex structures were fabricated. Achieved patterns can be used as a mold that will be used for mass production processes such as nanoimprint or PDMS molding process. All morphological data of scratch traces were scanned using atomic force microscope (AFM).

Rheological perspectives of industrial coating process

  • Coating process plays an important role in information technology such as display, battery, chip manufacturing and so on. However, due to complexity of coating material and fast deformation of the coating flow, the process is hard to control and it is difficult to maintain the desired quality of the products. Moreover, it is hard to measure the coating process because of severe processing conditions such as high drying temperature, high deformation coating flow, and sensitivity to the processing variables etc. In this article, the coating process is to be re-illuminated from the rheological perspectives. The practical approach to analyze and quantify the coating process is discussed with respect to coating materials, coating flow and drying process. The ideas on the rheology control of coating materials, pressure and wet thickness control in patch coating process, and stress measurement during drying process will be discussed.

Consolidation of Iron Nanopowder by Nanopowder-Agglomerate Sintering at Elevated Temperature

  • The key concept of nanopowder agglomerate sintering (NAS) is to enhance material transport by controlling the powder interface volume of nanopowder agglomerates. Using this concept, we developed a new approach to full density processing for the fabrication of pure iron nanomaterial using Fe nanopowder agglomerates from oxide powders. Full density processing of pure iron nanopowders was introduced in which the powder interface volume is manipulated in order to control the densification process and its corresponding microstructures. The full density sintering behavior of Fe nanopowders optimally size-controlled by wet-milling treatment was discussed in terms of densification process and microstructures.

  • Spent fuels are discharged from nuclear reactors as a result of power generations. The spent fuels would be considered as a useful resources because the main constituent is uranium and some other actinides are included in them. In order to utilize the resources chemical processes should be developed to treat the spent fuels and obtain uranium and other actinides to be fueled in a fast reactor. The technologies are categorized into wet and dry processes. In this study, the current status of such technologies is summarized to give a insight and a deep understanding on nuclear fuel cycles.

Synthesis of spherical silica aerogel powder by emulsion polymerization technique

  • Spherical silica aerogel powders were fabricated via an emulsion polymerization method from a water glass. A water-in-oil emulsion, in which droplets of a silicic acid solution are emulsified with span 80 (surfactant) in n-hexane, was produced by a high power homogenizer. After gelation, the surface of the spherical silica hydrogels was modified using a TMCS (trimethylchlorosilane)/n-hexane solution followed by solvent exchange from water to n-hexane. Hydrophobic silica wet gel droplets were dried at 80 ℃ under ambient pressure. A perfect spherical silica aerogel powder between1 to 12 ㎛ in diameter was obtained and its size can be controlled by mixing speed. The tapping density, pore volume, and BET surface area of the silica aerogel powder were approximately 0.08 g·cm-3, 3.5 ㎤·g-1 and 742 ㎡·g-1, respectively.

Rice pasta containing cultivar 'Saemimyeon' with high amylose contents and methods thereof

  • Recently, strong interest in the well-being and healthy food trends lead a spreading of rice processing products such as rice noodles, rice breads, and rice cakes. However, most of rice varieties developed in Korea showed very limited processing properties in processing of noodles compare to that of wheat flour. Moreover, low competitiveness as a raw processing materials due to high price give poor evaluations for rice noodles processing. To cope those barriers, 'Saemimyeon' a Tongil type high yielding variety with a high amylose contents was developed in RDA. 'Saemimyeon' showed about 10~32 % of increase in yield as 7.08MT/ha and 26.7% of high amylose contents together with easy grinding property of 65.7% of high chalkiness ratio. The both of milled as well as brown rice of 'Saemimyeon' were well fit for processing properties in rice pasta where the contents of rice flour for rice pasta was 99% (1% of Tapioka starch was intermixed in to the rice flour). A spaghetti type for wet noodles and macaroni type for dry noodles were developed, respectively. Each of pasta were showed relatively more or less an equal quality and panel test compare to that of durum wheat pasta products. Finally, rice pasta products could suggest an alternative idea for a new rice processing items where rice noodles market was stagnant.

NiCuZn Ferrite의 제조공정 제어 (제1보) - 습식 볼밀링에 의한 다성분 원료의 혼합 및 분쇄 공정의 고찰 (The Processing control of NiCuZn Ferrite (I) - Mixing and Size Reduction of Raw Materials by Wet Ball Milling.)

  • 원료$(NiO,\;CuO,\;ZnO,\;Fe_{2}O_{3})$를 사용하여 원하는 조성의 NiCuZn Ferrite 를 제조하기 위해서는, 가능한 고농도 원료슬러리를 균일 혼합 및 효율적인 분쇄를 하여야 한다. 본 연구에서는 습식 볼밀을 사용하여 혼합원료 입자들의 분산상태를 유지하며, 최적의 혼합 및 분쇄조건을 확립하고자 한다. 먼저 혼합원료의 분산특성을 조사한 후, 볼밀링시 사용하고자 하는 pH 영역을 결정하고, 이 때 사용 가능한 분산제를 선택하였다. 또한, 분산제의 양, 분쇄시간, 볼밀링 가능한 슬러리의 농도 등을 조사하였다. 혼합원료의 분산거동을 조사한 결과, 혼합 및 분쇄할 때 음이온성 고분자전해질(poly acrylic ammonium salt)이 적절한 분산제였으며, 분산제 양은 0.7 wt%가 적절하였다. 이 때 최적 볼밀링 시간은 18시간이었으며 볼밀링이 가능한 슬러리의 최대 농도는 약 55 vol%이었다. 혼합원료 30 vol%슬러리에 음이온성 고분자전해질을 0.7 wt% 첨가하여 18시간 볼밀링한 결과, 혼합원료의 평균입자경은 약 $0.54\mu\textrm{m}$, 비표면적은 $12.92m^{2}/cc$이었다. 이를 $700^{\circ}C$에서 3시간 동안 하소하면 단일상의 NiCuZn Ferrite가 얻어졌다.

Ormosil에 침투된 Rhodamine 6G Perchlorate의 이중합체의 검출 (Detection of Dimer of Rhodamine 6G Perchlorate Doped in Ormosil)

  • 졸겔법에 의해 제조된 organically modified silicate(Ormosil)에 Rhodamine 6G perchlorate(Rh6GP)를 침투시켰으며, 이 유기염료가 무기/유기 복합 기저체(host)에 안정하게 침투되었는지를 확인하였다. 복합졸의 상태에서 측정된 유기염료의 흡수스펙트럼과 겔화된 후의 스펙트럼, 그리고 복합체가 완전히 건조된 상태에서의 스펙트럼을 비교하여 Rh6GP가 이합체화되지 않고 안정한 상태로 있을 수 있는 Ormosil의 조성을 확립하였다. 졸겔반응시의 촉매로 사용된 염산의 농도가 Tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) 1몰을 기준으로 0.1몰 이내의 범위에서만 유기염료가 안정하고 이합체화되지 않은 상태가 유지되었다.

Application of computer vision for rapid measurement of seed germination

  • Root is an important organ of plant that typically lies below the surface of the soil. Root surface determines the ability of plants to absorb nutrient and water from the surrounding soil. This study describes an application of image processing and computer vision which was implemented for rapid measurement of seed germination such as root length, surface area, average diameter, branching points of roots. A CCD camera was used to obtain RGB image of seed germination which have been planted by wet paper in a humidity chamber. Temperature was controlled at approximately 250C and 90% relative humidity. Pre-processing techniques such as color space, binarized image by customized threshold, removal noise, dilation, skeleton method were applied to the obtained images for root segmentation. The various morphological parameters of roots were estimated from a root skeleton image with the accuracy of 95% and the speed of within 10 seconds. These results demonstrated the high potential of computer vision technique for the measurement of seed germination.
