This study performed the physical and mechanical experiment on the samples of costal marine clays individually collected in western and southern regions to identify the characteristics of western and southern costal marine clay. Based on the experiment result, the characteristics of costal marine clay is identified undrained shear strength. Based on the experiment result on the physical and mechanical characteristics of costal marine clays, the regression is presented that can analyze the mechanical characteristics of undrained shear strength in costal marine clay of Korea, region of Korea and western-southern region. The correlation of uniaxial compressive strength and undrained shear strength was suitable for use of western-southern region correlation equation. The test result of Jeonnam Yeosu area compares with prediction results of previous researchers formula and western-southern region formula. Prediction results appear highest reliability on the 0.827 of coefficient of determination in the prediction results of the western-southern region formula.

Marine clays are widely distributed in Korean eastern, western and southern coastal areas. Understanding engineering characteristics of the soft ground is very important, whenever civil structures are constructed in those coastal areas. It is because the ground is composed of highly compressible marine clay. In this paper, the physical and compression characteristics of Incheon, Mokpo, Gwangyang and Busan marine clay were analyzed and the characteristics between western and southern coastal marine clays were compared. For this, test results of 1,471 samples from 114 sites were used. As a result, Incheon clay showed the lowest plasticity and the highest unit weight due to influx of silt from the Yellow River and the turn of the tide of Incheon area. However, Gwangyang clay showed highly compressible characteristic due to extensive reclamation. On the other hand, Mokpo and Busan clay showed partially similar levels of characteristics. The compression index of Mokpo and Busan clay was high more than twice in comparison with Incheon clay and that of Gwangyang clay was higher than seventy percents in comparison with Mokpo and Busan clay.
In Namyang Bay of western Korea, macrotidal-flat deposits are divisible into three late Quaternary units: Unit M1 of upper marine mud, Unit T1 of middle siderite-bearing terrestrial clay, and Unit M2 of lower marine mud. Unit M1 represents typical Holocene intertidal mudflat deposits, showing a coarsening-upward textural trend. It probably resulted from the continual retrogradation of tidal flat during the mid-to-late Holocene sea-level rise. Reddish brown-color Unit T1 consists of homogeneous clay with abundant freshwater siderite grains and plant remains. Unit T1 is clearly separated from the overlying Unit M1 by a sharp lithologic boundary. Radiocarbon age, siderite grains and lithologic features indicate that Unit T1 is originated from freshwater bog or swamp deposition infilling the localized topographic lows during the early Holocene age. Overlain unconformably by early Holocene swamp clay, Unit M2 is orange to yellow in color and mottled, suggesting significant degree of weathering during the sea-level lowstand. Such subaerial oxidation is confirmed in the vertical profiles of geotechnical properties, clay mineral assemblages and magnetic susceptibility. Unit M2 appears to be correlated with the upper part of the late Pleistocene tidal deposits developed along the western Korean coast. The sedimentary succession of the Namyang-Bay tidal-flat deposit provides stratigraphic information for the Holocene-late Pleistocene unconformity and also permits an assessment of the preservation potential of the late Pleistocene marginal marine deposit along the western coast of Korea.

In recent days, the development project for industry or housing complex at west coast of Korea is on an increasing trend. the design of soft ground is necessarily required. So, the evaluation of consolidation characteristics for soft ground is very important in design and construction. Especially, the correct evaluation of preconsolidation pressure or OCR for given soft ground is essential at the west coast that has a large tidal range, since it affects the settlement of soft ground. In this study, various methods determining preconsolidation pressure were carried out to investigate the application of each method. The preconsolidation pressure that evaluated from the results of conventional consolidation tests on the songsan clay were compared.

To identify the soft marine clay of the Daebul reclaimed area, the south western part of Korea, and determine their engineering properties, a series of the laboratory and field tests are conducted. The main findings are summarized from laboratory and field investigations. It is also formulated the basic geotechnical characteristic data for the porject area. The established correlations for the engineering properties are reviewed and their applicabilities are studied.
The absolute clay mineral compositions and regional distribution of the 131 bulk marine surface sediments around the Jeju Island was compared to their relative compositions and distribution using quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. Average absolute clay mineral composition is illite 15.3% (0.5~40.5%), chlorite 2.6% (0~7.9%), and kaolinite 1% (0~5.6%). Total contents of the clay minerals are very high in the South Sea of Korea, northwestern part and southern offshore of Jeju Island. The average relative composition is illite 70.9% (16.7~89%), chlorite 21.5% (8.4~68.5%), and kaolinite 7.6% (0~29.3%). Relative illite contents are high in the northwestern and southeastern part of study area, and southern part of Jeju Island. Chlorite contents are high in the eastern part of study area and western part of Jeju Island. Kaolinite contents are high in the western and southern part of Jeju Island, and southern offshore of Jeju Isand. Absolute Distribution patterns are very similar to those of fine-grained (from clay to silt) sediment, whereas relative distribution patterns do not show any relationship with those of fine-grained sediment.

This study was to evaluate the feasibility of pre-consolidation pressure distribution characteristic of western and southern coastal region, using correlation of unconfined compressive strength and preceding research equation. Pre-consolidation of western and southern region showed similar trends undrained shear strength and pre-consolidation pressure in proportion to unconfined compressive strength. Predicted results of U.S. NAVY. (1982) equation revealed a small error western 9.7 % and southern 0.4 %. Prediction correlation results of pre-consolidation using unconfined compressive strength revealed an error western 16.8 % and southern 0.7 %. It was reported that less than 20 percent of pre-consolidation pressure prediction result of Casagrande forecasting error. Estimates of pre-consolidation pressure are possible, before the standard consolidation test, because it was reported that less than 20 % of the forecasting errors of Casagrande.
Electroosmosis (EO) is the movement of water in a porous medium under the influence of a direct current (dc). In past decades, electro-osmosis has been successfully employed in many soil improvement and other geotechnical engineering projects. Metal electrodes, such as steel, copper and aluminum have been used traditionally to conduct current. The shortcoming of these electrodes is that they corrode easily during an EO treatment, which results in reduced effectiveness and environmental concerns. More recently, conductive polymers are developed to replace metal electrodes in EO treatment. Electrical vertical drainages (EVDs) are one of these products under trial. The goal of this study is to assess the performance of EVDs for soil improvement and to further understand the scientific principle of the EO process, including the voltage drop at the soil-EVD interface, electrical current density, polarity reversal, and changes in soil physico-chemical properties generated by electroosmosis. It is found from the study that after 19 days of EO treatment with a constant applied dc electric field intensity of 133 V/m, the soil's moisture content decreased by 28%, the shear strength and pre-consolidation pressure increased more than 400%. It is also found that the current density required triggering the water flow in the soil tested, the Korean Yulchon marine clay, is 0.7 $A/m^2$. The project demonstrates that EVDs can serve as both electrodes and drains for soil improvement in short term. However, the EVDs, as tested, are not suitable for polarity reversal in EO treatment and their service life is limited to only 15 days.

Most soft ground in the southern and western coasts in Korea consists of very compressible alluvial deposits. Four samples in these alluvial deposite were selected to manifest the constitutive relations of consolidation. A series of tests were performed to investigate void ratio -effective stress relationand void ratio-coefficient of permeability relation on soil samples obtained at Haenam. Jindo Mankyung and Janghung permeabilities by CRS thoery were similar to directly measured data but those of indirectly computed by $C\upsilon$ shows difference. Several models about compressibility and permeability were compared with test data.

To investigate the degree of pollution using the species composition of benthic community and environments, the present study was conducted in Jinhae Bay, May of 1998. In Jinhae Bay, benthic macrofaunal community was investigated on the base of the samples from 67 stations. The main facies of the surface sediment was silty clay and clay. The total species number and the mean density of macrobenthic animals were 255 species and 984 $ind./m^2$, respectively. There were 90 species and 773 $ind./m^2$ of polychaetes as the most major faunal group in Jinhae Bay. At the region between the eastern mouth of Jinhae Bay and Gadeok Is., the species number and density were higher, while lower at the western area of Jinhae Bay. The most dominant benthic macrofauna in Jinhae Bay was the polychaetes, Lumbrineris longifolia(16.9%), and followed by polychaetes Tharyx sp.(6.7%), Clone teres(4.7%), Glycinde sp.(4.2%), bivalves Theora fragilis(4.0%), crustaceans Corophium sp.(4.0%) and so on. The most of the predominant species appeared mainly on the region between the eastern mouth of Jinhae Bay and Gadeok Is. Cluster analysis based on the macrobenthic faunal composition showed that Jinhae Bay could be divided into three station groups: The western Jinhae Bay(Station group A), the mouth of Jinhae Bay(Station groupe B), and offshore area between Gadeok Is. and Geoje Is.(Station group C). The mouth of Jinhae Bay had the highest mean species number and the mean density, and its important species was Lumbrineris longifolia. The offshore area between Gadeok Is. and Geoje Is. had medium mean species number and the mean density. The western Jinhae Bay had the lowest mean species number and the mean density. The distribution of BPI and BC values, used to assess benthic pollution, showed similar patterns. According to the classification proposed by Borja et al.(2000), the stations of the western inner-bay were heavily polluted sites, the stations between mouth of the bay and the offshore area were slightly polluted sites, and the stations of the other area were meanly polluted sites. Benthic community healthiness of the western Jinhae Bay was classified to 'Transitional to pollution' by BC values. The degree of pollution in Jinhae Bay may have extended gradually from the western Jinhae Bay to the mouth of the bay.
