  • In the case of domestic general waste landfills, cumulated leachate level is often formed in the landfill due to the waste of high moisture content and it becomes important to characterize the hydraulic properties of the disposed waste. Although many hydrologic studies have been peformed for leachate barriers and pheriperal subsurface environments, few studies have been done to investigate the hydraulic property of the disposed waste and cover soils and to analyse the leachate flow behavior within landfills. In this paper, the geotechnical properties of the waste and buried cover soils are identified through the field experiment including pumping and slug tests. The results of various tests show that the field density of the cover soils is somewhat higher than the maximum laboratory density of cover soils and the vertical flow of leachate and gas in the landfill is prevented by the buried cover soils. The hydraulic conductivities of field pumping test and slug tests are well matched and stayed in the range of hydraulic conductivities of well compacted wastes in the literature.

  • An equation is developed to estimate potential groundwater resources available for development. This equation is useful for preliminary planning stages prior to detailed design stages. The equation is a function of major factors such as aquifer characteristics, saltwater intrusion length, coastal groundwater discharge and potential locations of pumping wells. Thus, most important factors are taken into account. The equations are derived using well-known analytical solutions. Thus, the basis is scientifically sound. Use of the equation is quite simple since it is an explicit function of variables. A logical method is proposed to assess a radius of influence of a pumping well considering aquifer characteristics and the pumping rate. Applications to a hypothetical problem and comparison with results from a more rigorous numerical simulation model indicate that results obtained from the proposed equation are conservative.

  • The establishment of the technology for evaluating friction resistance and pipe pressure and the relation of the fluid characteristics and pumpability of concrete is essential for concrete pumping performance for the rapid construction of super-tall buildings. In this study, a quantitative evaluation of concrete fluid characteristics and surface friction resistance was performed, applying different concrete mix proportions and pumping conditions. To achieve this, we developed a temporary horizontal pumping evaluation system to measure pipe pressure and surface friction characteristics, and performed an experiment to investigate the relations between concrete rheology characteristics and friction resistance in pipe. The experiment found that in terms of the rheology characteristics, plastic viscosity was reduced remarkably after pumping. As well, high regression between the surface friction and pressure gradient was confirmed. This means that it is possible to evaluate the friction resistance between concrete and pipe by means of a pumping system that includes a frictional resistance testing pipe. In addition, high regression between the plastic viscosity of concrete after pumping and friction resistance coefficient was confirmed. Finally, it is considered that pumping pressure can be predicted using the friction resistance coefficient derived in this study, and it has high regression.

  • This study was to evaluate the stream depletion from groundwater pumping in shallow aquifer using the Hunt's analytical solution (2009) which considers a two-layer leaky aquifer-stream system. From the total 2,187 cases of simulations with combinations of various aquifer and stream properties, the streamflow depletion rates divided by the groundwater pumping rate showed the low values when the stream depletion factor (SDF) is higher than 1,000-10,000, and was more sensitive to the aquitard hydraulic conductivity than the streambed hydraulic conductivity. The comparison of the Hunt's solution (2009) with the Hunt's solution (1999) of a single layer aquifer indicated that the maximum difference between the dimensionless stream depletions calculated by using both solutions is above 0.3, and the stream depletion is significantly affected by the hydraulic properties of the $2^{nd}$ layer as the SDF of the first layer increases. The Hunt's solution (2009) was applied to the real shallow groundwater well that is located in Chunju-Si, and the results revealed that the groundwater pumping has significant effects on streamflow in a short period of time, showing that the dimensionless stream depletion exceeds 0.8 within a few days. It was also found that the shallow groundwater pumping effects on stream depletion are highly dependent on the stream-well distance for the locations with high hydraulic diffusivity of $1^{st}$ layer and low vertical leakance between $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ layers.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the stream depletion from groundwater pumping in deep aquifer using the Ward and Lough's analytical solution (2011) which considers a two-layer leaky aquifer system. The calculated results for each pumping from the 110 wells beside streams showed a wide range of non-dimensional stream depletion, that is the streamflow depletion rate divided by the groundwater pumping rate, from lower than 0.1 to more than 0.9 on average for 5 years depending on the specific properties of well location. From the comparison with Hunt's solution (1999) of a single layer aquifer, the Ward and Lough's solution showed about 50% lower than the Hunt's solution due to the difference of hydraulic properties between the first and second layers as well as the lagged effect of vertical leakance. It was also found that the groundwater pumping has a minor effect on the stream depletion if the stream depletion factor (SDF) of the 1st layer is higher than about 1,000 or the SDF of the 2nd layer is higher than about 100, or the vertical leakance is smaller than $10^{-5}s^{-1}$. Furthermore, in the present study, the variations of the stream depletion were assessed according to the magnitude of unmeasured hydraulic properties such as transmissivity and storage coefficient of the 1st layer, vertical hydraulic conductivity of the 2nd layer, the streambed hydraulic conductance.

  • To investigate groundwater variation characteristics in the Hancheon watershed, Jeju Island, an integrated hydrologic component analysis was carried out. For this purpose, SWAT-MODFLOW which is an integrated surface-groundwater model was applied to the watershed for continuous watershed hydrologic analysis as well as groundwater modeling. First, ephemeral stream characteristics of Hancheon watershed can be clearly simulated which is unlikely to be shown by a general watershed hydrologic model. Second, the temporally varied groundwater recharge can be properly obtained from SWAT and then spatially distributed groundwater recharge can be made by MODFLOW. Finally, the groundwater level variation was simulated with distributed groundwater pumping data. Since accurate recharge as well as abstraction can be reflected into the groundwater modeling, more realistic hydrologic component analysis and groundwater modeling could be possible.

  • Two-layer aquifer system with fractional flow dimension is composed of contiguous two layers: Layer 1 (lower layer) and Layer 2 (upper layer) with different permeability and specific storage each other. For this aquifer system, we assume that groundwater flow originates only from Layer 1 on the pumping well. The aquifer system considers wellbore storage and skin effects on the pumping well. Dimensionless drawdown curves for different flow dimensions are analyzed for different lambda (λ, crossflow coefficient) values, kappa ($textsc{k}$, permeability ratio between Layer 1 and Layer 2) values and omega ($\omega$, storativity ratio between Layer 1 and Layer 2) values. The curves for Layer 1 and Layer 2 show characteristic trend each other.

  • This is about an environmental study of groundwater interference by hydrodynamic dispersion between the well A and well C in Dongsam-dong, the Yeongdo Island, Pusan, Korea. The groundwater in the study wells come from the fracture zones deeply seated in welded lapilli rhyodacitic tuff of the Late Cretaceous Yucheon Group. The boring depth at the well A is 190 meters, and the optimal pumping rate of the well A is about 100 cubic meters per day therein. The fractured aquifers in impermeable welded tuff show the conjugate fracturing type and are of anisotropic. The aquifers along two fracture zones in the well A are 80 and 100 meters in depth, respectively. It is not suggested that those fractured aquifers are simply connected between the well A and C. The sea level fluctuation by ebb and high tides in a day is not effective to the groundwater table in the well A. The pumping for 15 days at the well A doesn't give rise to any changes of the groundwater levels in the neighbor well C. The radius of influence of the well A is measured as less than 200 meters. The measuring electric conductivity for the test of salt tracer doesn't testify any relationship between the well A and the well C. There is the main difference between the well A and the well C on the basis of the water analysis of those wells. the well A is located in the high content zone of salt much over the standard value for drinking, whereas the other wells B. C. D are in the low content area of salt below the standard value. It is elucidated for the high content zone of salt in Yeongdo around the well A to have been uplifted over 20 meters.

  • The drawdown distribution due to pumping by horizontal or slanted wells is analyzed by numerical modelling. In the numerical modelling uses 1-D discrete element feature included in commercial groundwater modeling program FEFLOW (version 5.1) and the results are compared with the semi analytic solution which uses superposition of successive point sources proposed by Zhan and Zlotnik (2002). Results of the numerical modeling agree well with the semi analytic solution except for very near field region of sink sources. The drawdown distribution due to pumping in riverbank filtration(RBF) plan site can be evaluated quantitatively by the numerical modeling in this study.
