This study also examined changes in self-concept, civic consciousness, and welfare attitudes as key covariates of social entrepreneurship. This paper used a case study of a social enterprise academy program which was held for two months in S social enterprise academy in 2012. Survey questionnaire with socio-economic characteristics of participants, social entrepreneurship, self-concept, civic consciousness, and welfare attitudes was developed and implemented at the first and last weeks of the program. In total, 55 respondents participated in the two surveys. Key findings suggest that program participants have no positive changes in social entrepreneurship, self-concept, civic consciousness, and welfare attitudes. In particular, interests in new market as a measure of social entrepreneurship have decreased significantly during the study period. In addition, welfare attitudes have been changed in a negative way. This paper concludes by discussing future directions of social enterprise academy program.

  • This study examines a casaul relationship between depression and welfare transitions of the National Basic Likelihood Protection Program. From a social selection perspective, prior high levels of depression are likely to select people into welfare or serve as a barrier to leaving welfare. From a social causation perspective, entering or exiting welfare can change the levels of depression. These hypotheses were tested using KOWEPS(Korean Welfare Panel study) 2005~2007. The results are as follows. First, entering welfare clearly increases the levels of depression. The increased economic stress resulting from falling into poverty seems to play a major role in the negative effect of welfare entry. Second, exiting welfare does not decrease the levels of depression. However, when welfare exits are classified into distinctive categories, welfare exit combined with concurrent poverty exit is likely to decrease the levels of depression. Third, high levels of depression clearly increase the probability of entering welfare regardless of the prior poverty status. Fourth, high levels of depression do not decrease the probability of exiting welfare, but rather increase the probability of an administrative disentitlement which leads to even worse economic conditions after exiting welfare. One implication of these findings is that negative policies such as time limit and strengthening sanctions can increase the number of welfare cyclers who are able-bodied but mentally weak.

  • This Study concerns therapeutic effects of the Therapy Dog Assisted Program (TDAP) on autistic children. Subjects participating in the study are two groups of Korean elementary schoolboys of the same age (twelve years old) : an experimental group and a control1ed group of equal number of children (sex children in total). Thirteen different sessions of TDAP interventions were performed over a three-month period. Evidence from the present study indicates that the children participating in the TDAP program achieved a greater degree of improvement in their social interactions as well as in their individual activities in comparison with the preTDAP counterparts. The present study also demonstrates significant changes in the TDAP group in comparison with those in the non-participating control group. The results from this study supports that the proposition that the Therapy Dog Assisted Program can be applied effectively in treating people experiencing severely damaged social functioning. Such a program may serve as an effective treatment modality in a variety of clinical social work settings. The questions of long-term effects of the TDAP intervention and possible interference with other behavioral side-effects on the part of the intervened subjects need to be addressed in future studies.

  • In the last two decades, the welfare states have undergone the changes of restructuring towards two ways. One is a restructuring of workfare and the other is a restructuring of the gender model of welfare state. In Korea, the workfare is reflecting on the DJ Welfarism 'Productive Welfare', but the gender model has a little effect on the public policies. By the way, It is imported that has the gender perspective in approaching the self-supporting program in the public assistance representing of the DJ Welfarism. Because almost 60% of the beneficiaries of the program are women. The Gender-mainstreaming strategy criticizes for the laws, the public policies, the public programs that considered gender-neutral or gender-blinded, and then complete the equality between women and men through the modification or development of those. The approach of Gender-mainstreaming is very important strategy for not only women who are self-reliance recipient but also successful settlement of self-supporting program. Nowadays that program is not execute yet. Then we hardly have information about recipients and the results that expected from that. At this point of gender-mainstreaming, this report suggest the strategy to development and settlement of the self-supporting program in the basics of analysis for the low-income unemployed and the government policy response to unemployment. For the gender models of the self-supporting program, the most important thing is throwing the male breadwinner model and adoption the dural-earner model (the gender model) about that program. Then we must produce gender-statistics data, develop programs for public work, job replacement, job training, evaluating system, etc. with gender perspective.

  • Today, the public assistance program in Korea is provided mainly for the livelihood protection beneficiary in urban area. The fact that the urban community-centered program is also applied to the livelihood protection beneficiary in rural area brings about some problems in fitness and effectiveness of resource distribution. The purpose of my study is to present my opinion that the public assistance program for the rural community should be put in practice after being fully distinguished from the urban program for the effective distribution of limited social welfare resources to insure the minimum standard of living and seek the self-support contribution which is the purpose of the public assistance program. The subject for this study were livelihood protection beneficiaries living in both rural and urban area. And the study was carried out in this parts: first, the way of life in them, second, the contents of 6 main public assistance programs being carried out.
