Analysis based on the Korea Labor and Income Panel Survey data reveals that earnings have become less volatile since the exchange rate crisis, while they have become more unequal. The reduction in measured earnings volatility is not explained by changes in the composition of various economic/demographic groups but accounted for by within-group reduction in the measured earnings volatility, which in turn is attributed to the reduced earnings mobility during the sample period. It is also found that measured earnings volatility is countercyclical and earnings changes are symmetric even during recessions.
The relations of mothers' attitudes regarding maternal employment to mothers' psychological well-being, mothers' parenting sensitivity and children's social competence were examined for mothers who worked full-time (extensively) from age 6 months of their children on, mothers who were not employed, and mothers who worked part-time or inconsistently during their children's early years. Longitudinal observations of 1,034 mothers and children in the NICHD Study of Early Child Care from age one month to first grade were analyzed using structural equation models. As predicted, mothers and children benefited when maternal attitudes were consistent with mother's actual employment status. Among extensively employed mothers, those with positive attitudes about employment had better psychological well-being; among mothers who were not employed, those who believed that maternal employment would have negative consequences for children's development reported better psychological well-being. The findings suggested that whether the mother's status of employment is congruent with their beliefs, not whether the mother is working or not, predicted the mother's well-being and their child's social development.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the adaptation process of older people to group homes. Methods: Participants were twenty older adults aged 65 or older who were living in group homes. Data were collected from January to April, 2015. In-depth unstructured interviews were conducted with individual participants. Data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory method. Results: From open coding, 100 concepts, 38 sub-categories, and 14 categories were identified. Analysis showed that the central phenomenon of the adaptation process of older people to group homes was 'gradually giving up'. Causal conditions were 'good-for-nothing body', contextual conditions were 'pushed', 'beleaguered'. Intervening conditions were 'reliable pillar: children', 'having affection (情) more than having it from family: facility workers', 'comfort - like feeling at home', 'relieved: system'. Action/interaction strategies were 'facing the unfamiliar reality', 'building relationships with other people', 'accepting reality'. Consequences were 'a good place, more than expected', 'hope for the remaining days', 'waiting for a peaceful death'. Conclusion: The results of this study provide an in-depth understanding of the experience of the adaptation process of older people to group homes. The findings from this study can be used as basic data to establish policies to increase the number of small scale facilities which can help older adults adapt easily to the facilities.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the role adaptation process experienced by executive directors of nursing department of general hospitals. Methods: Data were collected from 9 executive nursing directors though in-depth interviews about their experiences. The main question was "How do you describe your experience of the process of role adaptation as an executive nursing director?" Qualitative data from field and transcribed notes were analyzed using Strauss & Corbin's grounded theory methodology. Results: The core category of experience of the process of role adaptation as an executive nursing director was identified as "entering the center with pushing and pulling". The participants used five interactional strategies; 'maintaining modest attitudes', 'inquiring about trends of popular feeling', 'making each person a faithful follower', 'collecting & displaying power', 'leading with initiative'. The consequences of role adaptation in executive nursing directors were 'coexisting with others', 'immersing in one's new role with dedication', and 'having capacity for high tolerance'. The types of role adaptations of executive directors in nursing department were friendly type, propulsive type, accommodating type. Conclusion: The results of this study produced useful information for executive nursing directors on designing a self-managerial program to enhance role adaptation based on interactional strategies.
In the paper of 'Natural Selection Favors AIs over Humans,' Dan Hendrycks applies principles of Darwinian evolution to forecast potential trajectories of AI development. He proposes that competitive pressures within corporate and military realms could lead to AI replacing human roles and exhibiting self-interested behaviors. However, such claims carry the risk of oversimplifying the complex issues of competition and natural selection without clear criteria for judging whether AI is selfish or altruistic, necessitating a more in-depth analysis and critique. Other studies, such as ''The Threat of AI and Our Response: The AI Charter of Ethics in South Korea,' offer diverse opinions on the natural selection of artificial intelligence, examining major threats that may arise from AI, including AI's value judgment and malicious use, and emphasizing the need for immediate discussions on social solutions. Such contemplation is not merely a technical issue but also significant from an ethical standpoint, requiring thoughtful consideration of how the development of AI harmonizes with human welfare and values. It is also essential to emphasize the importance of cooperation between artificial intelligence and humans. Hendrycks's work, while speculative, is supported by historical observations of inevitable evolution given the right conditions, and it prompts deep contemplation of these issues, setting the stage for future research focused on AI safety, regulation, and ethical considerations.
This study set out to investigate the adaptation process and experiential structure of those children who went through sexual abuse by looking into their inner worlds in order to understand what kind of meaning sexual abuse had on them. For that, the investigator conducted in-depth interviews with 13 children aged 8~16 who lived at the shelter after experiencing sexual abuse. The methodology of Grounded Theory by Strauss and Corbin(1990) was used to analyze raw data. The analysis results indicate that the core theme of the adaptation process among the children living at the shelter after sexually abused by kin and kith was "hoping to appear the same as others." According to the results, the core phenomenon was "blaming the victims." The causal conditions include "broken families," "antihuman sexual abuse," "making sexual abuse a public issue," and "the trap of the family." The contextual conditions include "the chain named family," "family as the last fortress" and "structural enforcement of silence." The intervening strategies was "dual emotions toward the shelter." The action/interaction strategies include "aftermath of violence" and "trying to escape." The consequences were "preparation for the future" and "uncertain future." The identified stages include the confusion, keeping the secret, leaking the secret to others, intervention by others, social support and challenge and adjustment stage. The three identified types were "withdrawal and avoidance," "settling down in reality" and "overcoming and challenging." Based on the analysis results, discussions were made about the social welfare plans and intervention strategies in the conclusion.

This study is a concept analysis of membership, using the evolutionary concept analysis method. Literatures published from January 2000 to January 2020 were searched on CINAHL, EBSCO, and websites of professional associations, using keywords including 'Member support', 'Member welfare', 'Professional association', 'Membership', and 'Member benefit.' Finally, 12 articles and 4 professional association website data were selected for analysis. The antecedents of membership comprised two dimensions, viz., the member level, and the association level. The antecedent at the member level included need of members, whereas antecedent at the association level was to set up a new department responsible for memberships. Attributes of the membership included 'member support', 'member professionalization', and 'member solidarity'. The consequences of membership also consisted of two dimensions: increased member satisfaction and professionality, and enhancement of rights and interests at the member level, and improvement of public awareness for the professional association at the association level. The findings of this study suggest that providing proper membership is a desirable direction of the association's member support considering the member's opinion ultimately, and propose future research for membership development. This study significantly provides the contextual basis, by identifying the antecedents, attributes, and consequences of membership.
This study has been performed to explore verbal and behavioral expression of sexual desires among male elderly residents who have been living in long tenn care facilities. There are three topics covered in this study; first, in what situations and how seriously do care workers encounter expression of sexual desires of the elderly residents? Second, what kind of negative consequences do they believe those sexual behaviors will lead to? Third, how can we implement defensive measures against the sexual behaviors? In this study, twenty three care workers working full time in five retirement and care facilities were asked about their experience and perception of the above study agendas, and answers of the qualitative interview were drawn as follow; first, the elderly residents apparently show a variety of sexual harassment and provoking behaviors such as sticking to specific women, physically touching and attacking, and induce obscenely activities against female residents, care workers, and volunteer visitors. Second, their sexual behaviors are often influenced by their isolated and abandoned emotionality as well as living situation in rural areas. Third, their sexual behaviors often critically affect care work plan and facility managements by severely discouraging female care givers and community supporters. Therefore in this study, suggestions and defensive measures were made as follows: first, education and counselling programs toward female workers and volunteers need to be developed, and the programs should cover psychological and behavioral mechanism of sexuality in later life. Second, self control plans need to be empowered toward the elderly residents; in the plans, the elderly residents shall be encouraged to evaluate primary cause and proper solutions of sexual behaviors of their peering residents. Third, combination of healthy housing and care facilities for frail elderly need to be integrated in a neighboring location, so that when residents and workers encounter extreme episodes of sexuality of healthy residents in a housing facility, the problematic sexual residents are partially transferred into a neighboring care facility and thereafter other residents and cafe givers are relieved from stressful contacts with the extremely sexual residents.
This study was based on theories of the culture of poverty and the causes and consequences of poverty. The strong relationship of family income to mother's education presents the possibility of an intergenerational education cycle. Using a longitudinal approach, parental poverty status was measured by family income, welfare assistance, single parent, and occupation when children were 2 years of age; children's school performance was measured by teacher reports of their reading, mathematics, writing, and overall ability at grade 1. Data were analyzed by structure equation modeling. Results showed that mother's pre-childbearing level of education predicted child school performance in grade 1, confirming an intergenerational cycle. In addition, the results indicated that parental poverty acts as a mediator between the cycle.
This paper aims to explore the role of the home economics subject in helping high school students preparing for an independent aged life and to develop problem based teaching plans toward this goal. Contents related to the elderly in the high school home economics and technology 2007 and 2009 revised curricula were analyzed, and elderly-related contents in other subject areas (the 2009 revised curricula of ethics, public health, and social studies) were also comparatively analyzed to determine the identity of the home economics subject in relation to preparation for independent aging. Based on these analysis, five subjects and teaching plans were presented: the aging society and population changes, the characteristics of the elderly, individual preparation for aging, care of the elderly, and welfare services for the elderly. The ultimate objectives of the lessons were, through critical reasoning, to inquire into the causes of current problems the elderly face so that teenagers can understand aging societies and the elderly and to seek reasonable alternatives for teenagers as they prepare for successful and independent aging, increasing their problem-solving abilities in choosing the best course of action by considering the ripple effect of consequences of each of those alternatives. Suggestions on what direction elderly-related education should take in the future, and what roles teachers should take are also provided.
