FGB(Flexible Glasswool Backing) Submerged Arc Welding has been one of the main welding processes for one side butt welding in shipbuilding industries, which can efficiently improve the welding productivity by the addition of a supplementary filler metal into the molten weld pool. As recent ships have become larger in size, the application of high tensile and higher grade of steels has been continuously increased. Single pass FGB SA welding process accompanies such a high heat input when welding thick plates that the mechanical properties of weld metal can be dramatically degraded. This study has been performed in order to obtain high toughness and tensile properties of high heat input FGB SA welds, and to evaluate the effect of alloy elements on their mechanical properties. To complete welding 25mm-thick EH36 grade steel plate by single pass, 1.2mm diameter and 1.0mm long cut wires has been distributed in the groove before welding, and three different test coupons have been made using C-1.5%Mn, C-1.8%Mn-0.5%Mo, and C-1.4%Mn-1.7%Ni cut wires to investigate the influence of nickel(Ni) and molybdenum(Mo) on the mechanical properties of welds. Test results showed that the addition of Ni and Mo effectively promotes the formation of Acicular Ferrite(AF), while significantly reducing the amount of Grain Boundary Ferrite(GBF) in weld metal microstructures, which resulted in a beneficial effect on low temperature impact toughness and strength.

In this study, to investigate the shape of the back bead as a weld quality parameter and to select the optimal condition of the root-pass TIG welding of a horizontal butt-joint, an experimental design and the response surface method (RSM) have been employed. Three parameters are used as input variables, which include the base current, peak current, and welding speed. The back bead width is selected as an output variable representing the weld quality, the target value of the width is 5.4 mm. Conducting the experiments according to the Box-Behnken experimental design, a $2^{nd}$ regression model for the back bead width was made, and the validation of the model was confirmed by using the F-test. The desirability function was designed through the nominal-the-best formula for the appropriate back bead width. Finally, the following optimal condition for welding was selected using the RSM: base current of 0.9204, peak current of 0.8676, and welding speed of 0.3776 in coded values. For verification, a test welding process under the optimal condition was executed and the result showed the back bead width of 5.38 mm that matched the target value well.

Titanium and titanium alloy can be reproduced immediately even if oxide films($TiO_2$) break apart in sea water. Therefore, since titanium demonstrates large specific strength and outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting and microbiologically influenced corrosion in sea water environment, it has been widely applied to heat exchanger for ships. In particular, with excellent elongation, pure titanium may be deemed as optimal material for production of heat exchanger plate which is used with wrinkles formed for efficient heat exchange. Conventional plate type heat exchanger prevented leakage of liquid through insertion of gasket between plates and mechanical tightening by bolts and nuts, but in high temperature and high pressure environment, gasket deterioration and leakage occur, so heat exchanger for LPG re-liquefaction device etc do not use gasket but weld heat exchanger plate for use. On the other hand, since welded plate cannot be separated, it is important to obtain high quality reliable welds. In addition, for better workability and production performance, lasers that can obtain weldment with large aspect ratio and demonstrate fast welding speed even in atmospheric condition not in vacuum condition are used in producing products. So far, 1st report and 2nd report compared and analyzed embrittlement degrees by bead colors of weldment through quantitative analysis of oxygen and nitrogen and measurement of hardness as fundamental experiment for the evaluation of titanium laser welding, and evaluated the welding performance and mechanical properties of butt welding. This study welded specimens in various conditions by using laser and GTA welding machine to apply edge welding to heat exchanger, and evaluated the mechanical strength through tensile stress test. As a result of tensile test, laser weldment demonstrated tensile strength 4 times higher than GTA welds, and porosity could be controlled by increasing and decreasing slope of laser power at overlap area.
In order to propose the optimum welding condition for field application, the effects of welding heat input and cooling rate at PWHT on the mechanical properties were investigated. Submerged arc welding of 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steel for pressure vessel was conducted at welding heat inputs of 15.2kJ/cm, 30.9kJ/cm, and 44.8kJ/cm, and cooling rates of 184$^{\circ}C$/hr, 55$^{\circ}C$/hr, and 2$0^{\circ}C$/hr at PWHT. From the test results, as the welding heat input increase up to 30.9kJ/cm, the changes of microstructure and impact toughness were small. At the heat input of 44.8kJ/cm, however, toughness decreased obviously due to the coarsening of coarse-grained HAZ and formation of ferrite at bainite grainboundary of weld metal. On the other hand, cooling rates at PWHT did not effect on the changes in microstructure and mechanical properties. Even though tensile strength and impact toughness at all welding conditions of this study were above the minimum specification requirement, it was confirmed that heat input of 30.9kJ/cm was the optimum welding condition to improve welding performance by higher heat input.

Purpose: This study aims to determine the optimal conditions for the spot welding process that mechanically connects the case of a cylindrical secondary battery and the negative tab. Methods: We use 33 factorial design to derive the optimal conditions for the spot welding process. The pulling strength, the cross-sectional area of nugget, and the shock test life are selected as response variables, which can represent the resistance welding quality. The input variables are selected as the welding time, welding voltage, and pressure, which are the controllable factors in the spot welding process. Results: The main effects of welding time and welding voltage and the interaction effect of welding time and welding voltage are significant. Conclusion: The optimal conditions for the spot welding process to mechanically join the negative electrode tab of the cylindrical secondary battery and the battery case are developed. The result shows that the pulling strength is increased by 44% compared to before improvement under optimal conditions.
Butt-joints of A6061-T6 and AZ31 plates were successfully manufactured by using a friction stir welding method. Off-set free joints and off-set joints were fabricated to investigate the effect of the tool plunge position on the mechanical properties of the joints. Hardness test, tensile test and charpy impact test was performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the joints. Off-set condition resulted in increase of mechanical properties of the joints. The variation of the hardness distribution in the SZ was also stabilized in the off-set condition. Tensile strength of the off-set joint was about 85% against to that of the AZ31 base metal. Impact absorption energy by Charpy-Impact-Test of the off-set joint also increased by almost 2 times against to that of the AZ31 base metal.

Thick-shell welding for super-sized oil storage tanks is currently done manually, which causes deterioration in quality and a lack of uniformity due to frequent rewelding. The limitations of the external environment must also be considered for manual welding. This paper describes the development of a carriage system for automatic vertical welding to increase reliability, reduce cost, and enhance productivity. The system consists of a welding platform, carriage device, and control unit, which were conceptually designed according to design specifications and manufactured with modular parts. In addition, the structure was analyzed for safety and to predict design problems in advance, and the results are reflected in reviewing the design. To evaluate the performance of the system, a tensile test, bending test, and weld time test were carried out, and the results were satisfactory. The time required for automatic weld was greatly improved by more than 87%, compared to the manual welding time.

Laboratory and meta-analyses were done for 9% NI Steel for use in a liquefied natural gas carrier. The meta-analysis is based on a previous study. The laboratory analysis examines the effects of a single pass and multiple passes on the tensile strength through an impulse-response test. The tensile strength increased from pass one to pass three and decreased from pass four to pass ten. The pass and multi-pass welding had a positive effect on the tensile strength. Lastly, the welding and tensile time had a positive effect on the tensile strength.

The pre-heat free consumables for GMAW, SAW and FCAW processes that matche with the Cu-bearing PFS-700 steel which has yield strength over 700MPa were developed and evaluated to see the suitability in military such as submarine and battle ship. Explosion Bulge Test underwater was developed and applied to see the reliability of welded structure. All welding was conducted without pre-heat before welding, the interpass temperature was below $150^{\circ}C$ for all welding conditions. Tensile strength for the weld metal in GMAW, SAW and FCAW process is 887MPa, 875MPa and 813MPa, respectively, these values are similar to the base metal of PFS-700 steel of 838MPa. EBT results in GMAW, SAW and FCAW show 14.0%, 14.02% and 15.9% reduction of thickness without generation of crack, respectively and stand-off distance was set up properly to have over 14.0% reduction of thickness. Through EBT results, the developed new consumables are applicable to the weapon systems such as submarine and battle ship.

The laser welding and its analysis were carried out using high power 6kW $CO_2$ laser for high strength steels such as DP, TRIP and conventional high strength steels. Bead on plate welding of thin sheet was examined to investigate the effect of weld variables of laser welding, and to obtain optimum welding condition. In order to investigate the formability of welded high strength steels, LDH test was added on this work. At high welding speed, the partial penetration was obtained by low heat input. Meanwhile, porosity was formed in the bead at low weld speed because of extremely higher heat input. The optimum welding condition of welding was derived from bead width, penetration and hardness property. It was shown that the DP steels had lower porosity level and smooth bead shape, therefore better laser weldability than TRIP steels and conventional high strength steels. In addition, LDH test shows that the welded DP steels have about $90\%$ formability value of base metal, although TRIP steel and conventional high strength steels have about $80\%$ formability value of its base metal.
