  • Recent deepwater offshore structures in the Gulf of Mexico utilize butt welded tubular joints. Application of a welded tubular joint includes tendons, production risers, and steel catenary risers. Fatigue life assessment of these joints becomes more critical, as the structures to which they are attached are allowed to undergo cyclic and sometimes large displacements around an anchored position. Estimation of the fatigue behavior of these tubular members in the design stage is generally conducted by using S-N curves, as specified in the codes and standards. Applying the stress concentration factor of the welded structure to the S-N approach often results in a very conservative assessment, because the stress field acting on the tubular has a non-uniform distribution through the thickness. Fatigue life analysis using fracture mechanics has been applied in the design of the catenary risers. This technology enables the engineer to establish proper requirements on weld quality and inspection acceptance criteria to assure satisfactory structural integrity during its design life. It also provides guidance on proper design curves and a methodology for accounting for the effects of non-uniform stress distribution through the wall thickness. Still, there is inconsistency when designing tubular joints using a conventional S-N approach and when specifying weld flaw acceptance criteria using fracture mechanics approach. This study developed fatigue curves that are consistent with both the S-N approach and the fracture mechanics approach. Accounting for non-uniform stress distribution and threshold stress intensity factor were key parameters in relating both approaches. A series of S-N curves, generated from the fracture mechanics approach, were compared to the existing S-N curves. For flat plate butt joint, the S-N curve generated from fracture mechanics matches with the IIW class 100 curve when initial crack depth was 0.5 mm (0.02). The new curves for tubular joint agree very well with the experimental results. The comparison also indicated the degree of conservatism built into the API X design curve.

  • The fatigue crack propagation properties and fatigue life of two kinds of Al body panel for automobile were examined experimentally by using the plate specimen and the single spot welding specimen. The fatigue limit of spot welding specimens was lower than that of a plate specimen. The fatigue limit was similar in two kinds of spot welding specimen. The shape and size of crack propagation were observed and measured on beach mark of fracture surface. The crack propagation of surface crack specimen showed almost same tendency to that of a thick plate as almost semi-elliptical. In spot welding specimen, the fatigue crack occurred in inside surface of nugget area was almost semi-elliptical. The crack growth rate can be explained using equation of stress intensity factors.

  • Waste water is disposed to sewage disposal plant by underground PE double wall pipes. Various processes have been introduced to join PE pipes, but most of these methods have many disadvantages such as costs, lack of reliability and difficulties in joining, etc. Recently butt welding has been paid much attention to joint PE pipes as this process has many advantages such as cost, safety and reliability. In this study, newly developed heat plate, a patent-pending heat plate with a groove, was used to butt-weld PE double wall pipes with different misalignment gaps to simulate real underground conditions, and the butt welding temperature of PE pipe was determined by thermal analysis (Thermal Gravimetric Analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis). The resulting joining characteristics of double wall pipes were compared with those from a conventional heat plate, in terms of stiffness, flattening and leakage tests. The results from the stiffness and flattening test showed that there were no big differences between the butt-welded joints made from these two plates. From the leakage test, although PE pipes welded with a conventional heat plate did leak below the required test conditions (10 min. at 0.75kgf/cm2), the pipes welded with a patent-pending grooved heat plate did not show any leakage even at a pressure 1.5 times higher than the required conditions. It was noted that by utilizing a grooved heat plate more complete fusion at the pipe joints could be obtained, which in turn induced a high quality joints.

  • This paper deals with experimental investigation and modeling of the static behavior of a novel RCS beam-column exterior joint. The studied joint detail is a through-column type in which an H steel profile totally embedded inside RC column is directly welded to the steel beam. The H steel profile was covered by two supplementary plates in the joint area in order to avoid the stirrups resisting shear in the joint area. Two full-scale through-column-type RCS joints were tested under static loading. The objectives of the tests were to examine the connection performance and to highlight the contribution of two supplementary plates on the shear resistance of the joint. A reliable nonlinear 3D finite element model was developed using ABAQUS software to predict the response and behavior of the studied RCS joint. An extensive parametric study was performed to investigate the influences of the stirrups, the encased profile length and supplementary plate length on the behavior of the studied RCS joint.

  • Spot welding has been used in the sheet metal joining processes because of its high productivity and convenience. In this study, predicting methods of fatigue life of spot welded joint have been investigated and fatigue and static tests were conducted with the peel-tension specimens using cold rolled steel plate(SPCC). Fatigue life of peel-tension spot welded joint was influenced by tail effect. Fatigue life evaluation using modified stress index parameter, considering the effective eccentric length, can predict the life more exactly than conventional stress index parameter.

  • Authors had developed the model for the fatigue life assessment of welded details considering residual stress and its relaxation. The model consists of three ingredients; a hot-spot stress approach, a residual stress relaxation, and an equivalent stress. The equivalent stress is induced by stress ranges and the ratios between the applied mean stresses and the ultimate stress of material. Once being tuned with two specific fatigue tests by using load carrying cruciform joint, this model can be applied to many kinds of welded details which structural stress concentration factors are different from each other. This paper reports the application of the proposed model for various welded details including cover plate, longitudinal stiffener, gusset and side attachment. From the investigation of predicted results by using the proposed model it was shown that the ambiguous fatigue characteristics of the various details influenced widely by the welding residual stress are clarified, and also the model could be applied to assess fatigue life of general welded structures.

  • Fillet welded joints, specially in ship structure, are well known the critical part where stress concentrate or crack initiates and grows. This paper is concerned with the study of the behavior of fatigue crack growth t the root and toe of load carrying cruciform fillet welded joints under three points bending by the determination of stress intensity factor from the J-Integral, using the Finite Element Method. The stress intensity factor was investigated in accordance to the variation of the weld size (H/Tp). weld penetration (a/W) and plate thickness (2a'/Tp). As mixed mode is occurred on account of shearing force under the three points bending, Stern's reciprocal theory is applied to confirm which mode is the major one. The main results may be summarized as follows 1) The calculation formula of the stress intensity factor at the both of root and toe of the joint was obtained to estimate the stress intensity factor in the arbitrary case. 2) The change of stress field around crack tip gives much influence on each other at the roof and toe as H/Tp decreases. 3) Mode I is a major mode under the three points bending.

  • Ships, structures on the ocean, bridges, and other structures tend to be large by the development of industry. These ultra thick plate were welded with large heat input, which causes welding stresses, deformation and buckling, so it has to be considered the weld design, safety, reliability. The welded residual stresses were produced and redistributed due to the effect of large heat input. The mechanical phenomenon has not been surely identified yet. In spite of the lack of the study on the box column, there are various types of steel frame such as I type, H type, + type and $\bigcirc$ type, used in high story building. In this study, we performed computer simulation with two dimensional heat conduction and plane deformation thermal elasto-plastic finite element computer program as changing the plate thickness to 100mm, 150mm and groove angle to $60^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ of corner joint in box column. And then, to identify mechanical phenomenon such as the phenomenon of thermal distribution, welding residual stresses and deformation and to decide optimum groove angle and welding condition. The main conclusion can be summarized as follows: 1) Since the groove angle has became cooling down rapidly due to its smaller value, the temperature slope was steeped somewhat. 2) The tensile stress within the welding direction stresses was somewhat decreased at the weld metal and HAZ, increasing of the groove angle. 3) The local stress concentration of the groove angle $60^{\circ}C$ was appeared smaller than groove angle $30^{\circ}$.
