  • A natural mixed stand of Phragmites australis and Phacelurus latifolius was studied to clarify the distribution properties in a microsite in a tidal flat of Suncheon Bay. The height, density, and biomass of the shoots, as well as the biomass of the root system, were monitored for both species along with the altitude on a mound from June 2010 to October 2013. Firstly, the mean height and dry weight of both species were similar during the growth season. However, individual variations of the sizes of plants in the same species were noticeable. Secondly, the density and dry weight per unit area of P. latifolius increased, but that of P. australis decreased with the altitude on the mound. Thirdly, the root system (rhizomes and roots) of P. latifolius was mostly located in the upper layer (up to 20 cm depth), while that of P. australis was in the lower layer (over 70 cm depth) of the sediment. The roots of P. australis penetrated to the lower parts of the water table, while the roots of P. latifolius did not make contact with free water of the sediment. Fourthly, the removal of the shoot in the early growth season led to a visible reduction of biomass in the late growth season. The reduction rate was larger in P. latifolius than in P. australis. Lastly, in the area where the mound was removed, the density of P. australis increased in the first two years (2010-2011) and was highly sustained inthe last two years (2012-2013). However, the density of P. latifolius was low, and this plant was distributed at the edge of the mound only.

  • Purpose : This study aimed to examine the relationships among five clinical measures for functional alignment of the lower extremity. Methods : Thirty healthy subjects (15 males and 15 females) were recruited for the study. The five clinical measures of functional alignment of the lower extremity included navicular drop, quadriceps angle, internal rotation of hip, and anterior and lateral pelvic tilt angles. The level of navicular drop was calculated by the difference between the height of the navicular bone in the sitting (non-weight bearing) and standing (weight bearing) positions. The quadriceps angle and internal rotation of hip were measured using a standard goniometer with photographic markers while the subjects were lying in a prone position on a table with their knee at $90^{\circ}$ flexion. Anterior and lateral pelvic tilt angles were determined using a inclinometer. Results : Correlation and a simple linear regression analysis were used to assess relationships between the clinical measures. There were significant correlations between navicular drop and quadriceps angle (p<.05), between navicular drop and internal rotation of hip (p<.05), and between quadriceps angle and internal rotation of hip (p<.01). In simple linear regression analysis, the navicular drop appeared to be a factor affecting the quadriceps angle and internal rotation of hip (p<.05). The findings suggest that navicular drop has a great impact on lower extremity alignment. Conclusion : This study might help us to examine lower extremity function and clarify its role as a potential injury risk factor.

  • Functional bread was manufactured with single cell detritus (SCD) of sea tangle. The optimum ingredient formula for SCD bread was determined based on mixture model. Flour and water reduced max weight, strength, hardness and specific loaf volume, whereas the increased SCD reversed the volume change of dough. Flour increased $L^*$ and $b^*$ values of SCD bread, while SCD decreased. Flour and water decreased $a^*$ value, while SCD increased. Max weight, strength, hardness, specific loaf volume, $b^*$ value and water holding capacity (WHC) were linear model on ANOVA table, whereas distance, volume change of dough, $L^*$ and $a^*$ values were nonlinear model. The response constraint coefficient showed that SCD influenced texture of SCD bread more than flour and water did, whereas water influenced the volume change of dough, specific loaf volume and WHC more than flour and SCD did. Moreover, flour influenced color value more than did water and SCD. Distance and $a^*$ value fitted nonlinear model with interaction terms for flour-SCD and water-SCD. Optimum ingredient formula for SCD bread was: flour, 48.25%; water, 30.89%; SCD, 3.86%. Sensory evaluation of SCD bread was a little lower than industrial bread and electrolyzed SCD bread.

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the relation between obesity and dietary life of children aged 4-7 divided into two groups based on height for age, weight for age and weight for height. Controls were selected based on sex and age similar with those of cases. Cases and controls were selected using the combination of weight for height, weight for age and height for age by the World Health Organization standard. Cases were 23 children judged as obese. Controls were 37 judged as normal. Whether their mother had a job or not, showed relative risk 1.35(95% C1 0.32-5.64). In obese group, employmental statue of mother was 17.4% compared with 13.5% in control group. In mother's concern for cooking pattern, the relative risk was 5.64 and 95% CI was 1.70-18.66 in the item of "We consider the color arrangement when we serve foods" which was the highest rate. The item having the lowest relative risk was "We cook the meal by ourselves with spending time" which of the relative risk was 0.52 and 95% CI was 0.16-1.65. The item having a great significance in the dietary habit of subjects were "They beat the tablewear with the chopstick"(RR:1.64, 95% CI:0.22-12.73) and "I talk with food in my mouth"(RR :1.11, 95% CI:0.39-3.15), and the other items didn't show significancy. Number of food eating per day for male was 30.0$\pm$10.93 in obese group where as 23.2$\pm$9.80 in control group. 22.3$\pm$4.56, 21.8$\pm$10.91 were taken obese group and control group respectively in female. In the survey for general habit in life, the item of "We has a time for conversation with our family regularly" was high correlation to obesity and item of "We made our children change clothes and go to toilet themselvesj has slight relation to obesity. From above, we observed normal and obese children had different factors such as mother's attitude for preparing meals, table manners and habit of living. So we should take a continuous interest in children's dietary life in order to correct the wrong dietary habit and to protect from future problems.

  • Objective: This study examines the genetic factors influencing the phenotypes (four economic traits:oleic acid [C18:1], monounsaturated fatty acids, carcass weight, and marbling score) of Hanwoo. Methods: To enhance the accuracy of the genetic analysis, the study proposes a new statistical model that excludes environmental factors. A statistically adjusted, analysis of covariance model of environmental and genetic factors was developed, and estimated environmental effects (covariate effects of age and effects of calving farms) were excluded from the model. Results: The accuracy was compared before and after adjustment. The accuracy of the best single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in C18:1 increased from 60.16% to 74.26%, and that of the two-factor interaction increased from 58.69% to 87.19%. Also, superior SNPs and SNP interactions were identified using the multifactor dimensionality reduction method in Table 1 to 4. Finally, high- and low-risk genotypes were compared based on their mean scores for each trait. Conclusion: The proposed method significantly improved the analysis accuracy and identified superior gene-gene interactions and genotypes for each of the four economic traits of Hanwoo.

  • This study was conducted to obtain accurate data on intake, apparent digestibility and nitrogen balance of dietary protein which the korean take in habitually. Subjects were 8 male college students, aged from 20 to 26, and maintained their menu and life pattern as usual during a 4-week study. The same amount of diet that the subjects had consumped, and feces and urine were collected and measured to extract their nitrogen content data by Kjeldahl method. From above data, the apparent digestibility and the body nitrogen balance were estimated by determining daily protein intake and excretion. The daily protein intake measured by Jjeldahil method was 88.3$\pm$ 0.9g(1.45/kg of body weight /day) which marked 8.3% higher than that estimatd by food analysis table. The proportional of animal protein against total protein intake was 50.4$\pm$ 2.3%. Daily fecal protein loss was 14.3$\pm$0.6g and the apparent digestibility was 83.8$\pm$ 0.7%. The urinary nitrogen excretion was 10.30$\pm$0.19g. The nitrogen balance considering nitrogen excretion from feces indicated positive balance of 1.06$\pm$0.20g.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide a brassiere size chart for making the well-fitted brassiere. The subjects are 2811 women whose range of age is 12 to 59. These woman were classified into 5 age groups by seniority ; age group 1(12~19), age group 2(20~29), age group 3(30~39), age group 4(40~49), age group 5(50~59). statistical differences of measurements were analyzed among 5 age groups through ANOVA. Correlation between measurements were analyzed by correlation analysis. In addition, new brassiere size chart and production rate tables were proposed in this study. The results of the study were as follows. 1) Most of the body measurements were significantly different among 5 age groups. The height was decreasing by getting older while weight was increasing significantly. The 3 girth measurements(top bust, bust, under bust girth) in breast, bust width, bust depth were apt to increase definitely. The 3 girth measurements had high Correlation coefficients among 3 girth mesurements. Therefore, it is valid to pick out cup size and under bust girth for representative items of size chart. 2) Under bust girth and cup size were chosen as 2 axes of brassiere size chart. From the dual distribution table whose intervals had been determined by KS size chart, 17 sizes, which had more than 2% of appearance, were suggested for brassiere size chart. Through these new size charts, the suggested brassiere sizes covered 82.5% of all subjects. The suggested brassiere size chart would be more helpful than KS size chart in making the well-fitted brassiere.

  • The 4.3-kb gene coding for L-lactate dehydrogenase of Bacillus stearothermophilus has been subcloned and expressed in E. coli cells. The enzyme was purified 200-fold with 25% yield by heat treatment , DEAE-Sephadex, and NAD++ -Sepharose CL-4B affinity chromatography followed by gel filtration through Sephadex G-200 . The molecular weight of the purfied enzyme was estimated to be about 35, 000 and 140, 000 on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and gel filtration, respectively. indicating that the enzyme is composed of four identical subunits. THe enzyme for pyruvate reduction and lactate oxdiation was stable at 60 and 75$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, and the optimal temperatures for both reactions were 60 and 7$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The enzyme had an optimal pH at 5.5 and 8.5 in pyruvate reduction and lactate oxidation, respectively. The pH stability of enzyme of pyruvate reduction was table between pH 5 and 7. more than 90% of enzyme activity was lost at 1mM FeSO4 and p-chloromercuribonzoate. The maximal activation of the enzyme was obtained with 0.8mM fructose 1, 6-bisphosphate.
