An experimental work was conducted by using a laboratory-made model dryer to investigate the effect of the rate of natural forced-air on the drying rate of rough rice which was deposited in the deep-bed. The dryer consisted of 8 cylinderical containers with grain holding screen at their bottoms, each of which having 30cm in diameter and 15cm in height. The containers were sacked vertically with keeping them air-tight by using paper tape during dryer operation. Two separate layers of containers were operated in the same time to have two replications. The moisture contents of grains within each bins after predetermined period of dryer operation were determined indirectly by measuring the weight of the individual containers. The air-rates were maintained at 6 levels, or 5, 8, 10, 15, 18 and 20 millimenters of static head of water. The roomair conditions during dryer operation were maintained in the range of 10-l5$^{\circ}C$ in temperature and 40-60% in relative humidity. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. Drying characteristics of the grains in the bottom layers were approximately the same regardless of airdelivery rates, giving the average drying rate as about 0.35 percent per hour after 40-hour drying period, during which moisture content (w. b.) reduced from 24 percent to about 10 percent. 2. After about 40-hour drying period, the mean drying rates increased from 0.163 percent per hour to 0.263 percent per hour as air-flow rates increased from 5mm to 87.16mm of static head of water. In the same time, the moisture differences of grains between lower and upper layers varied from 12.7 percent at the air rate of 5mm of water head to 7.5 percent at the air-flow rate of 20mn of water head. Thus, the greater the air-flow rate was, the more overall improvement in drying performance was. Additionally, from the result of ineffectiveness of drying grain positioned at 70cm depth or above by the air rate of 5mm of static head of water it may be suggested in practical application that the height of grain deposit would be maintained adequately within the limits of air-rates that may be actually delivered. 3. Drying after layer-turning operation was continued for about 30 hours to test the effectiveness of reducing moisture differences in the thick layers. As a result of this layer-turning operation, moisture distribution through layers approached to narrow ranges, giving the moisture range as about 7 percent at air-flow rate of 5mm head of water, about 3 percent at 10mm head about 2 percent at 15mm head, and less than 1 percent at 20mm head. In addition, from the desirable results that drying rate was rapid in the lower layers and dully in the upper layers, layer-turning operation may be very effective in natural air drying with deep-layer grain deposit, especially when the forced air was kept in low rate. 4. Even though the high rate of air delivery is very desirable for deep-layer natural-air drying of rough rice, it can be happened that the required air delivery rate could not be attained because of limitation of power source available on farms. To give a guide line for the practical application, the power required to perform the drying with the specified air rate was analyzed for different sizes of drying bin and is given in Table (5). If a farmer selects a motor of which size is 1 or {{{{1 { 1} over {2 } }}}} H.P. and air-delivery rate which ranges from 8~10mm of head, the diameter of grain bin may be suggested to choose about 2.4m, also power tiller or other moderate size of prime motor may be recommended when the diameter of grain bin is about 5.0m or more for about 120cm grain deposit.
The study was performed to investigate the effects of gaseous emission of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on the growth of rice plant under stressed field conditions. This study is specifically dealt with multiple effects of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on various plant growth indicators such as leaf damage, weight of grain, panicles per hill, spikelets per panicle and percent fertility. It appears that there is a good correlation between ambient concentrations of sulfur oxides and sulfur contents found in leaves with an average correlation coefficient of 0.868 within a 1% significance level. A better multiple correlation was found between percent leaf damage and sulfur and fluorine contents found in leaf with a significance of 1% level. The correlation coefficient ranges from 0.807 to 0.978 with an average being 0.922. An evaluation of data observed has demonstrated that both panicles per hill and percent fertility are significantly affected by air pollutants. As expected, hydrogen fluorides have more effects than sulfur oxides. It is, however, interesting to note that spikelets per panicle has slightly been affected while no indication of effects on l000-grain weight has been observed. This may lead to a conclusion that a reduction in yield of rice under polluted field conditions may have more been caused by the diminution panicles per hill and percent fertility rather than by the diminution of spikelets per panicle and grain weight.
This experiment was carried out at Chuncheon substation, Crop Experiment Station to investigate the effect of cold water irrigation on the growth and grain yield of rice in 1990. Irrigation of cold water (17$^{\circ}C$) delayed 10 to 19 days of heading, and reduced about 17 to 31% of plant height in terms of culm and panicle length. Number of panicle per plant was decreased and / or increased by cold water irrigation. Cold water irrigation reduced spikelet number per panicle and percent of filled grain. Grain yield was increased but, straw weight was decreased according to water temperature gradient from inlet to outlet. There was varietal differences in head rice recovery by cold water treatment. In general the dark brown and / or black colored kernel increased at cold water inlet but decreased percent of green kernel. Alkali digestible value increased and amylose content decreased at cold water inlet.
Strong wind of 6.5m/s from electric fan was applied to rice at heading stage to find out the nature of wind damage to panicle. Damaged panicles caused by typhoon were sampled out of field to measure the yield and milling components. Wind-treated glumes were developed into two forms, fertile and sterile, and each of them showed all degree of glume discoloration. The number of fertile grains were higher than sterile grains in a damaged panicle. Averagesdegree of glume discoloration was higher in not flowered glume than in flowered glume. The more recently flowered glumes resulted the higher degree of discoloration among flowered glume. The percent of sterile grain to total number of grains was the highest at stage of just flowering. The glume discoloration representing wind damage at heading state advanced in degree in ten days after treatment compared to that just after treatment. Grain length and grain width were decreased with the increased degree of glume discoloration, while grain thickness was not changed greatly. Chalkiness was a little higher in damaged grain than in normal grain without definite trends by degree of discoloration. Ripening ratio, 1000 grain weight and yield decreased with increased degree of glume discoloration in damaged panicle by typhoon. Decreasing order in yield was white rice, rough rice and brown rice. Ratio of brown rice to rough rice increased, white rice to brown rice decreased, and milling recovery was not changed greatly with increased degree of 히ume discoloration.

Farm population was rapidly decreasing due to shift of the people from farm sector to the non-farm sector caused by the economic growth of the country. Especially, a great shortage of farm labor in busy farming period in June and October is becoming a serious problem in maintaining or promoting land productivity. The peak of labor requirement in summer is caused by rice transplanting and barley harvesting. In order to reduce the restrictions imposed on farm management by the concurrence of labor requirement and the lack of labor, the experimental study for mechanization of barley harvesting has been carried out in the fields. 1. The machines for barley harvesting were knap-sack type reapers, windrow reaper (power tiller attachment), binder and combine. The order of higher efficiency of machine for barley harvesting was combine, binder, windrow reaper (WR), knapsack type reaper 1(KSTR1), and knap sack type reaper 2(KSTR2; mist and duster attachment). 2. The ratio of grain loss for the manual, binder, and combine plot was about four percent of total field yield. 3. The total yield of barley in 35 days and 40 days harvesting after heading were 514 kg and 507kg per 10 ares respectively. The yield of 35 days-plot was higher than other experimental plots. 4. The lowest yield was recorded in 30 days-plot due to the large quantity of immatured grains and having lighter 1000-grain weight. The ratio of immatured grains was 2.66 percent and 1000-grain weight was 29.4 grams. 5. The total harvesting cost of the windrow reaper was 10,178 won per 10 ares. It was the lowest value compared to other machines. The next were combine, binder, KSTR1, KSTR2, and manual in sequence. As a result, the optimum time of barley harvesting for mechanization was 35-40 days after heading. Combine, binder, and windrow reaper were recommended as the suitable machines for barley harvesting in the work efficiency. However, in total harvesting cost, the windrow reaper was the most promising machine for barley harvesting.
Six commerical rice varieties were cultivated and harvested at different locations in 1987 and 1988 to clarify the degree of locational variations. of several characteristics related to rice grain quality using the rice samples harvested from 8 to 20 locations for a variety each year. Locational variations of percent brown rice, percent milled rice, 1000-grain weight and amylose content were small, but whole grain rate, alkali digestibility, gel consistency, percent white-center and white-belly grain, degree of chalkiness and degree of translucency showed larger variations between locations. The degree of locational variation of sensory evaluation score for eating quality of cooked rice were varied from small to large along with rice variety used and year cultivated. Texture palatability index and stickiness of cooked rice among rheogram characteristics showed larger locational variations, but cohesiveness and springiness showed smaller variations between locations. Set back, break down and maximum viscosity showed larger locational variations among amylogram characteristics of rice flour. Special attention was given to a cultivated location, Anseong, because rice samples harvested at Anseong showed lower percent white-center and white-belly grain, and low set back and high break down in Chucheongbyeo, lower percent white-center and white-belly grain, higher texture palatability index and viscousness/hardness ratio, and low set back and high break down in Dongjinbyeo, higher texture palatability index, and low set back and high break down in Yongmunbyeo, lower percent white-center and white-belly grain in Sangpungbyeo, and low set back and high break down in Samkangbyeo. No other locations in this study produced rice samples showing wide acceptable quality-related characteristics except Anseong.
Yield response of 30 rice varieties widely grown during the past 70 years in Korea was examined at the six transplanting dates from May 10 to June 29 at the 10 day intervals in 1982. Early japonica varieties grown before 1960s showed the highest yield at the June 9 and 19 transplantings and yields decreased with earlier or later transplantings except the earliest transplanting of May 10. However, yield of recent japonica varieties grown after 1960s was similar among the transplanting dates from May 10 to June 19, but yield was lower at the June 29 transplanting. In the indica/japonica varieties grown after mid- 1970s, yield was highest at the May 10, 20, and 30 transplantings and it decreased with further delay of transplantings largely due to the decreased panicle number, percent ripened grains, and 1,000 grain weight. This may indicate that recently developed varieties may be more adaptable toearly transplanting than older varieties. The number of panicles per hill was variable among the transplanting dates in all varieties, but it decreased as transplanting dates delayed after June 9. In japonica varieties the number of spikelets per panicle, percent ripened grains, and 1,000 grain weight increased as transplanting was delayed. However, in indica/japonica varieties the number of spikelets per panicle was similar among the transplanting dates and percent ripened grains and 1,000 grain weight decreased as transplanting date was delayed after June 9. The percent ripened grains of japonica varieties decreased with increase in the number of spikelets per hill but increased as heading date delayed. However, in indica/japonica varieties the percent ripened grains was not affected by both the number of spikelets per hill and heading date except that of June 29 transplanting of which percent ripened grains was extremely low because of delayed heading although the number of spikelets per hill was low. Grain/Straw ratio was not affected by heading date in japonica varieties, but it decreased significantly as heading date was delayed in indica/japonica varieties.

The reports on the chemical composition of developing job's tears seeds is very insufficient by this time. The purpose of this study was to obtain the fundamental information on chemical component of the developing job's tears seed, including starch, sugar, oil, protein, fatty acid, Alkali Digestibility Value(ADV), 100-grain weight. Two job's tears varieties in different by maturity types were analyzed for those components from 10 days after heading to maturity, with 5-day intervals. Total sugar content in seeds followed a pattern of linear increase after heading, but it started to decreased around 15 days after heading. On the other hand, starch content continued to increased until maturity and the highest increasing occurred between 15 and 20 days after heading. The protein content of seeds was decreased, while oil content was increased through the ripening process. Starch content showed a positive correlation with 100-grain weight, ADV, oil and germination percent, but it had negative correlation between total sugar and protein contents in ripening process. Maximum starch content, 100 grain weight, and germination percent obtained by quadratic equation were attained 38 to 43 days after heading. So that the physiological maturity of job's tears seeds was considered to be 40 days after heading.

Soil moisture condition is an important limiting factor in growth and yield in rice culture. The purpose of this study was to compare the influence on the growth, yield and Quality of rice subjected to soil moisture stress (SMS) at different growth stages. Ajaponica rice cultivar, Dongjinbyeo, was cultured under flooded conditions in a plastic container filled with silty loam soil. The container was subjected to SMS until the initial wilting point (IWP) coincided with about 10% in soil moisture content and about-200 kPa in soil matric potential, and was then irrigated again, at 6 and 5 of main growth stage in 1996 and 1997, respectively. At maturity, the plant height, tiller number, leaf area and top dry weight were decreased more in SMS treatments at the early stage than the late stage. The averaged yield index of SMS to control in both years was lowest at meiosis (62.5%), which primarily resulted from lower percent ripened grain and 1,000 grain weight, and second' reduced the spikelet number per panicle and panicle number per hill, and followed at tillering stage (68.5%) which resulted from the lower production in tiller number and top dry matter during and after SMS treatment. The percent-age of read rice in SMS plants varied with the treatment stage as order of lower at meiosis (44.0%), heading (53.9%), panicle initiation (70.1%), tillering (72.1%), ripening (75.8%) and 5 days after transplanting (DAT) (79.0%). Protein content in brown rice was slightly larger in SMS at late growth stage than the control, while the contents of fat and ash differed very little between SMS and control. Contents of Mg and K and Mg/K in brown rice with SMS were lower at some treatment stages such as at ripening or panicle initiation.
Defoliation effect of two soybean cultivars on the grain yield was studied under different planting densities planted at two different planting date. Leaf removal caused a linear decrease of grain yield with increased amounts of defoliation in the case of lower population densities, while in the case of higher population densities over 40 plants per sqare meter, the slight removal of lower leaves indicated increased grain yields by 13% to 35% compared with control depending on the cultivar and planting time. The pod number per plant was the most effective factor influencing grain yield. The grain weight and the percent of matured grain become more important components for higher yield with decreased population densities depending on cultivar.
