  • Zooplankton biomass is essential for understanding the quantitative structure of lake food webs and for the functional assessment of biotic interactions. In this study, we aimed to propose a biomass (dry weight) estimation method using the body length of cyclopoid copepods. These copepods play an important role as omnivores in lake zooplankton communities and contribute significantly to biomass. We validated several previously proposed estimation equations against direct measurements and compared the suitability of prosomal length versus total length of copepods to suggest a more appropriate estimation equation. After comparing the regression analysis results of various candidate equations with the actual values measured on a microbalance-using the coefficient of variation, mean absolute error, and coefficient of determination-it was determined that the Total Length-DW exponential regression equation [W=0.7775×e2.0183L; W (㎍), L (mm)] could be used to calculate biomass with higher accuracy. However, considering practical issues such as the morphological similarity between species and genera of copepods and the limitations of classifying copepodid stages, we derived a general regression equation for the pooled copepod community rather than a species-specific regression equation.

  • This study was conducted to derive the fresh weight and dry weight estimation formulas of Pinus densiflora and prepare a weight table using them. Aone-variable formula using only the diameter at breast height (DBH) and a two-variable formula using DBH and height were used to calculate the fresh and dry weight. Each equation was verified using statistics, such as fit index, standard error, and residuals. Theoptimal equation was evaluated for applicability by calculating the weight as a coefficient derived from a statistical verification. W = bD+cD2 was selected for the one-variable equation, while W = aDbHc was selected for the two-variable equation. The fit index of the former was 0.87-0.92, while that of the latter was 0.94-0.98, both of which showed a good fit. A new weight table was prepared using the optimal estimation formula, and it was compared and analyzed with a previous weight table. Analysis results showed that Gangwon pine had higher values in the previous weight table, while pines in the central region had higher values in the newly created weight table.

  • Browse from oriental white oak(Quercus aliena Blume) was analysed for nutritive value and biomass estimation. The content of cmde protein was high on August and September. NDF, ADF and lignin contents were increased with progressing the seasons but IVDMD, TDN, DE and ME levels were not different from the variation of seasons. Tannin content was high on May and June. Basal stem diameter $\times$ height of tress was highly correlated with browse dry weights(r=0.80**) and the linear regression equation are the follows; Y = 8.23 + O.57X(Y = browse dry weight(g), X= basal stem diameter $\times$ height(cm)). Using the traditional cutting method, the amounts of browse was determined as 823 g dry weight per tree, while the new method by the above equation gave a similar results, i. e., 793 g dry weight per tree. The possibility of browse biomass estimation of oriental white oak by the basal stem diameter $\times$ height index was found.

  • In container crane system, the variation of cargo weight have effect on the travelling and sway control of load. For precise travelling and/or anti-sway control of crane system, the cargo weight should be measured and considered with control algorithm. But, and added attachment for measuring the cargo weight put restraint upon the control freedom for travelling and anti-sway. In this paper, we propose an estimation method for cargo weight in container crane system by using observation technique. First of all, we model the container crane system as a bilinear system and transform this model into linear system with external disturbance model. Second, we propose a generalized type - disturbance estimation observer and set a disturbance model, where, the cargo weight is related with the sway of load, and the sway is represented as a periodic external disturbance. Lastly, by using simulation we verify that the proposed algorithm of disturbance estimation observer is effective to estimate the cargo weight, and it will be used with anti-sway control algorithm.

  • In the construction industry, Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is considered to be the most suitable approach and determining the attribute weights is an important CBR problem. In this paper, a method is proposed for determining attribute weights that are calculated with attribute relation. The basic items of consideration were qualitative and quantitative influence factors. These quantitative factors were related to the qualitative factors to develop a Cost Drivers-structural equation model which can be used to estimate construction cost by considering attribute weight. The process of determining the attribute weight-structural equation model consists o 4 phases: selecting the predominant Cost Drivers for the SEM, applying the Cost Driers in the SEM, determining and verifying the attribute weights and deriving the Cost Estimation Equation. This study develops a cost estimating technique that complements the CBR method with a Cost Drivers-structural equation model which can be actively used during the schematic estimating phases of construction.

  • In this research, a method of deriving statistical weight prediction formula which is used during the conceptual design phase was studied and it was programmed using Microsoft Excel and verified by applying to jet transport aircraft. The database was built while referencing the variables of conventional wing weight estimation formulas and it was used for modeling the jet transport wing weight regression equation. The model was evaluated using the K-fold cross validation method to solve the overfitting problem of the model.

  • This study was conducted to derive the optimal estimation equations for deriving the green and dry weights of Larix kaempferi (Japanese larch) and Pinus rigida (Rigida pine), which are major coniferous tree species in South Korea. The equations were then used to develop weight tables. Table development began with the sampling of 150 L. kaempferi and 90 P. rigida trees distributed throughout the national scale, after which green weights were measured on-site. Samples from each stand were then collected, and their dry weights were measured in a laboratory. The equation used to calculate green and dry weights was divided into a one-variable formula that uses only the diameter at breast height (DBH) and a two-variable equation that employs DBH and height. The equations used to estimate the green and dry weights of logs were divided into one- and two-variable equations using DBH. Statistical data, such as the fitness index (FI), root mean square error, standard error of estimation, and residual diagram, were used to verify the suitability of the estimation equations. Applicability was examined by calculating weights using the derived optimal equations. The equation W = bD+cD2 was used in measurements involving only DBH, whereas the equation W = aDbHc was employed in cases involving both diameter and height at breast height. The FI of W = bD+cD2 was 0.91, while that of W = aDbHc was 0.95, both of which are high values. With these estimation formulas, weight tables for the green and dry weights of L. kaempferi and P. rigida were prepared and compared with weight tables created 20 years ago. The green and dry weight tables of both species were larger.

  • Empirical equation has been developed by employing the new non-dimensional physical number 'wave action slope' for the estimation of breakwater armor weight. Van der Meer(1987) introduced Iribarren number for the same purpose, but his equation shows very different trend of distribution with the condition of Iribarren number. On the other hand the equation related with wave action slope keeps the same trend of distribution over the whole region. When the parameter is related to the Iribarren number, the equation of wave action slope has a very high accuracy.

  • The optimal estimation of a bearing only target tracking problem be achieved through the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation and the Bayesian update. Recently, a nonlinear filtering algorithm using a direct quadrature method of moments in which the associated Fokker-Planck equation can be propagated efficiently and accurately was proposed. Although this approach has demonstrated its promising in the field of nonlinear filtering in several examples, the "degeneracy" phenomenon, similar to that which exists in a typical particle filter, occasionally appears because only the weights are updated in the modified Bayesian rule in this algorithm. Therefore, in this paper to enhance the performance, a more stable measurement update process based upon the update equation in the Extended Kalman filters and a more accurate initialization and re-sampling strategy for weight and abscissas are proposed. Simulations are used to show the effectiveness of the proposed filter and the obtained results are promising.
