This study was carried out to elucidate the effects of organic mulching materials on the weed inhibition and the growth of young jujube (Zizyphus jujuba Miller) trees from 2012 to 2013. Four organic mulching materials (rice straw, rice hull, sawdust and wood chip) were treated on jujube tree field in 2012. The range of weed control values was 96~98% in 2012. In 2013, the weed control values of rice straw, rice hull, sawdust and wood chip mulching were 7%, 60%, 27%, and 79%, respectively. The growth of young jujube trees was highest in wood chip mulching, whereas that in rice hull mulching was lowest. These results suggest that wood chip can be useful as a mulching material for weed control in jujube orchards.
This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of recycled paper mulch on weed occurrence and the growth and yield of rice in dry-seeded paddy field. Mulch papers with basis weight of 105, 110, 115g/$m^2$ were fabricated from recycled corrugate container. It took about 80 days after mulching for the mulch papers to reach 50% decomposition, showing no significant differences among types of mulch paper. Paper mulching was very effective in controlling the paddy weeds at early stage of rice growth, but the efficacy of weeds control decreased a little at late season. However the efficacy was still higher than the plot using herbicide. The paper mulch plot showed rice yield similar to the weed control plot using herbicide. It could be concluded that paper mulch can be used as an alternative for non-herbicidal weed control and ensure as high yield as the conventional weed control method using herbicide in dry-seeded rice field.
In spite water direct seeding cultivation of rice has advantages in terms of laborsaving and cost-down, it demonstrates uneven seedling establishment and difficult weed management. To select an applicable mat for mulching system of water seeded rice, weed occurrence, growth and yield performances of rice, and soil temperature were evaluated in several kinds of biodegradable mulching material. Field studies were conducted at the experimental farm of National Crop Experiment Station in 1999 and 2000. Among the mats tested in 1999, Safer-mat had the greatest effect on inhibiting weed occurrence and Lawn-mat demonstrated the least efficacy of weed control (EWC) value. In Safer-mat treatment, Ludwigia prostrata was the dominant weed species but Echinochloa crus-galli was not observed. Different kinds of mulching material from the mats studied in 1999 were tested in 2000. Biodegradable polyester (PES) coated on the recycled paper for newspaper press (RP) treatments showed similar or higher EWC values than non-mulched broadcast seed rice with 2 times of herbicide application (BC-herbicide) and Safer-mat that was the most effective mat on preventing weed appearance in 1999. Immediately after mat mulching on the surface of paddy soil, five pregerminated rice seeds were manually sown in each 3cm-hole formerly punctured at 30${\times}$14 cm spacing in 2000. All the 3 kinds of mulching material tested in 2000 had better seedling stand than BC-herbicide treatment. Rice yield in PES coated with 10 thickness on RP (PES10 $\mu\textrm{m}$+RP) was a little higher than in BC-herbicide treatment but the former produced less panicles in unit land area than the latter. PES10 $\mu\textrm{m}$+RP demonstrated a great effect on raising soil surface temperature than non-mulching treatment throughout the period of seedling establishment.
This study was carried out of investigate the effect of weed control methods on the growth of 'campbell early' grape at the vineyards which was divided into the 18 zone ($3.5m{\times}5.5m/zone$) in the grape research institute. It's investigated control effects, growth and quantity of grape and dominant weed of July~August by sprayed glufosinate ammonium and paraquat dichloride each 3 times, fabric covering, grass planting (Festuca myuros), mechanical weeding (3 times). The weed showed total of 16 species at the vineyards. Late-May to early growth stage of grape was dominated Chenopodium album and Trifolium repens, but to late growth stage of grape from mid-July was dominated Erigeron canadensis, Echinochloa crus-galli and Chenopodium album. Weed control effect of 10 day after treatment showed fabric covering 100%, grass planting (Festuca myuros L.) 95.3%, mechanical weeding 81.9%, glufosinate ammonium (3 times) 98.1% and paraquat dichloride (3 times) 90.4%, respectively. Growth of grape was higher herbicides treatment and mechanical weeding than others. Yield tended to be higher glufosinate ammonium (3 times) and paraquat dichloride (3 times) each 12.6 kg/tree, 12.3 kg/tree than others.
This experiment was carried out to clarify the effect of herbicide chlormethoxynil 7G, CNP 9G and butachlor 3.5/pyrazolate 6G on weed control and seedling growth in rice seedbed. Different quantities of the herbicides were applied as soil incorporation or surface broadcasting. At earlier sowing annual grasses such as Echinochlva spp. and Alopecurus spp. were dominated, but Cyperus spp. were dominated at later sowing. Weed suppression by herbicides was greater in soil incorporation than in broadcasting and chlormethoxynil 7G and CNP 9G application (30kg/ha) showed about 70% weed control, while butachlor 3.5/pyrazolate 6G (10-20kg/ha) showed 90 to 100% weed control. At lower rate of butachlor 3.5/pyrazolate 6G (10kg/ha) emergence ratio, healthy seedling ratio and relative growth rate of rice were higher, and phytotoxicity was lower than in the others.
This study was conducted to evaluate the weed suppressing effects of different cropping system including hairy vetch (Vicia villosa) and rye (Secale cereale) cover crops, polyethylene plastic film, and transplanting film mulching in direct sowing and transplanted sorghum field in 2011. Crop growth and development and weed occurrences in the fields were examined to know the efficiency of proposed cropping system. In polyethylene film mulching treatment, heading date of sorghum was earlier by 3 days than control, on the other hands, rye cover crop mulching delayed heading date by 11 days. Besides the effect of cover crop on the heading of sorghum, the residues changed growth characteristics. Plant height of sorghum was increased by 27.3% at hairy vetch treatment although it was reduced by 47.5% in the rye cover crop treatment. Hairy vetch treatment showed beneficial effects on sorghum growth reduced the occurrences of grasses and broadleaf weeds to 84% and 96%, respectively, as compared to control in sorghum fields. While rye cover crop treatment showed poor sorghum growth reduced less strongly grasses and broadleaf weeds by 35% and 71%, respectively. At harvest, yield of sorghum was greater in order of hairy vetch cover crop > polyethylene film mulching > rye cover crop ${\fallingdotseq}$ control in both transplanted and direct sown fields.

Establishment of mechanized soybean production system without herbicide is required for organic soybean production in recent. Effects of mechanized soybean planting with partial tillage between growing rye living mulch, which was sown in April or early May, on weed suppression, soybean early growth and yield were investigated with different rye sowing dates and locations in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Effect of rye living mulch on weed suppression at 40~50 days after soybean planting was high as much as 70~90% regardless of rye sowing dates. In particular, a strong suppression effect on the occurrence and growth of Echinochloa crus-galli which occupied 60~80% of total weed biomass was observed. Rye living mulch sown on April 9, of which biomass was more than that sown on April 27, inhibited soybean early growth severely and reduced soybean grain yield in 2007. However, soybean grain yield was no t reduced despite suppression of early growth of soybean plant by living mulch sown during from late April to early May compared with conventional planting. Rye sowing before late April was not proper considering tendency of weed occurrence in spring because of unfavorable changes in weed suppression, early growth and grain yield of soybean according to amount of living mulch.
The allelopathic effects of Lantana camara L. (Family:Verbenaceae) on germination and seedling establishment of some agricultural crops and weed species have been identified. Aqueous extracts of dry leaves and contaminated soil where L. camara is grown were used to verify allelopathic effect on seed germination of five bioassay species; Raphanus sativas, Capsicum annum, Lycopersicum esculantem, Crotalaria juncia and Chromoleana odorata. Fifty seeds from each bioassay species were placed in a petri dish containing leaf extracts or contaminated soil, and seed germination were examined after 3 days. The plant house experiments were carried out to evaluate the impact of L. camara contaminated soil and leaf debris using L. esculantem as the indicator plant. Seed germination of L. esculentem, C. junica and Capsicum annum was significantly inhibited by L. camara contaminated soil. However, the degree of inhibition varied among the bioassay species. The aqueous extract of dry leaves of L. camara was highly phytotoxic and it significantly reduced seed germination of all bioassay species. There was a decline in plant height, leaf area and shoot dry weight of tomato only in early growth stages when grown in L. camara contaminated soils. However, incorporation of leaf debris into soil affected the vegetative growth of tomato in early stages when the leaf debris concentration was increased. Growth recovered at the latter part of the life cycle. On the basis of these results it can be concluded that the allelochemicals in L. camara contaminated soils are harmful to the seed germination of crop species. The adverse effect was present only during the early growth stages and it did not suppress the latter part of the plant growth. These responses are attributed to allelopathic effects which need confirmation under field conditions.
This research was carried out to study the effect of mulching materials and weed control methods on weed occurrence and growth of kale on upland and paddy soil of field culture at spring and autumn season. Paddy soil temperature of mulching treatments was high by $0.9{\sim}2.0^{\circ}C$ in comparison of non-mulching at autumn season. The control value of weed was over 91% at mulch paper and time required for weed control was reduced by 70% at mulch paper + machine weeding in comparison of non-mulching + hand weeding. The yield of kale was similar to that of conventional culture. Paddy soil temperature of mulch paper was higher on April, but lower on May and June than non-mulching at spring season. Dominant weed was Chenopodium album var. centrorubrum Makino, The control value of weed was over 91% at mulch paper, time required for weed control was reduced by 75% at mulch paper + machine weeding in comparison of non-mulching + hand weeding and the yield of kale increased by 34% than conventional culture. Dominant weed was Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis Ohwi. on paddy soil at autumn season. The control value of weed was 43% at mulch paper. Time required for weed control was reduced by 80% at mulch paper + machine weeding in comparison of non-mulching + hand weeding. The yield of kale increased by 26% compared with than of conventional culture.
The effects of cover crops on weed suppression were evaluated in this study. Weed suppressing effects of hairy vetch cover crops were evaluated in summer grain fields. Cover crops were sown at the sowing rate of $60kg\;ha^{-1}$ on Oct. 2012 and Feb. 2013 without basal fertilization. Three weeks old sorghum seedlings were transplanted after minimum tillage on June 2013. Hairy vetch cover crop treatment significantly reduced weed biomass in the transplanted sorghum. By smothering, the cover crops reduced weed biomass to economic level in sorghum. Besides the weed suppression, hairy vetch cover crop resulted in green manure effect on crop growth. Hairy vetch treatment showed beneficial effects on sorghum growth. Reduction of weeds caused by use of strip-tillage machine and polyethylene film mulching was 71% and 88%, respectively. At harvest, yield of sorghum was greater in order of polyethylene film mulching > hairy vetch cover crop > control in transplanted fields.
