Soil temperature was higher in clear or blue polyethylene film and bare soil than in black or green polyethylene film and straw mulching. Light transmission was low in black, blue or green colored polyethylene film and straw mulching. Germination of weeds was generally high under clear polyethylene film but black polyethylene film inhibited the germination. Germination of Portulaca oleracea, Setaria viridis and Amaranthus retroflexus increased under blue polyethylene film but inhibition of germination was observed in Erigeron canadensis, Avena fatua, Chenopodium ablum, Digitaria sanguinalis and Echinochloa crusgalli. Green polyethylene film mostly inhibited germination of weeds except A, fatua, C. album and E. canadensis. The greatest number of weeds emerged was obtained in clear polyethylene film, next in bare soil but green or blue polyethylene film inhibited the emergence of weeds. However, no emergence of weeds was observed under black polyethylene film. The highest dry weight of weeds was obtained in clear polyethylene film, next in bare soil, but green or blue polyethylene film and straw mulching caused suppression of weed growth. No weeds were grown under black polyethylene film.
This experiment was conducted to investigate seedling emergence of Humulus japonicus in Seoul and Suwon and to predict its seedling emergence in various locations in Korea. Non-linear regression analysis to fit Gompertz model to accumulated seedling emergence of H. japonicus was performed to describe its seedling emergence. Parameter estimates from the non-linear regression and estimated effective accumulated temperature required for its seedling emergence were further used to predict seedling emergence of H. japonicus in 8 major geographical regions of Korea. Seedling emergence of H. japonicus versus effective accumulated temperature was well described by Gompertz model in both Seoul and Suwon. Effective accumulated temperatures required for the first seedling emergence and 50% of the maximum seedling emergence were estimated to be $56.7^{\circ}C$ and $76.3^{\circ}C$, respectively. Therefore, the dates for the first seedling emergence of H. japonicus were predicted to be 21 and 30 March in Daegu and Daejeon, while 4 and 6 April in Suwon and Chuncheon, respectively. The dates reaching 50% of maximum seedling emergence were also predicted to be 25 March in Daegu, while 3, 8 and 9 April in Daejeon, Suwon and Chuncheon, respectively.
Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to investigate allelopathic potential of some weed species on alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) germination and seedling growth. In the comparison between top(leaves+stems) and root extracts, top extract exhibited greater allelopathic effects on alfalfa germination than that of root. The various weed species extract differently responded to alfalfa test species, WL-320, in terms of allelopathic effect. Top and root aqueous extracts of lambsquarter(Chenopodium album L.), giant foxtail(Setaria faberii Herrm.), redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), velvetleaf(Abutilon theophrasti Medic.), crabgrass(Digitaria sanguinalis L.), canada thistle(Cirsium arvense L.) and prostrate knotweed(Polygonium aviculare L.) significantly inhibited germination, seedling length, weight, vigor, and rate of germination of alfalfa. The regression slopes of various top extracts showed that velvetleaf(b=3.69) extracts were the most inhibitory, while large crabgrass(b=2.39) extracts had the least allelopathic effect on alfalfa germination. Germination, seedling length and weight of alfalfa were inversely proportional to the concentration of dried velvetleaf extracts. Also, more of the toxic effects were observed from the dried extracts compared to the fresh extracts. Residue of velvetleaf inhibited significantly alfalfa emergence and survival percentage compared to the control. The emergence and survival percentage of alfalfa were 44%, 57% at 1.0% residue treatment, respectively. When weed residues were mixed with silica sand with incubation time, velvetleaf residue most inhibited alfalfa growth. The degree of inhibition increased as incubation time increased. An incubation for 72h caused the greatest inhibition of alfalfa growth. These results demonstrate the different allelopathic activity of weed species extracts on alfalfa and suggest that weed may affect alfalfa growth and development through the inhibitory effects of allelochemicals present in weed tissue.

The present study elucidates of the effect of less water stress in different temperature condition on the emergence of forage grasses. Water condition was controlled to 30% and 60% by water content by wet soil. The mean temperature is conducted by $10^{\circ}C$ (out side) and $20^{\circ}C$ (glass house). The results are as follows: 1. Mean emergence time and emergence day after sowing of grasses were greatly influenced by water content of soil and temperature. It was suggested that temperature was very important for the light competition with weed in the early growth of grass. 2. Accumulatied emergence of grasses was nat afected by temperature, but it was sensitively affected by water content of soil.
Petri dish and pot experiments were conducted to investigate germination and seedling emergence of Ammannia coccinea as influenced by environmental factors. The best germination of A. coccinea was obtained at $35/30^{\circ}C$ of temperature and 0 bar of osmotic potential, while no germination at temperatures of ${\leq}$$15^{\circ}C$ and ${\geq}$$40^{\circ}C$, osmotic potentials of ${\leq}$ -2.0 bar, or dark condition. The best seedling emergence was observed at $35/30^{\circ}C$, at which the first emergence of A. coccinea was observed at 7 days after sowing (DAS) with its maximum emergence reached at 10 DAS. No seedling emergence was observed at $15/10^{\circ}C$ with significant reduction at $40/35^{\circ}C$. Seedling emergence decreased with increasing soil depth, resulting in no seedling emergence at ${\geq}$ 3 cm. The Gompertz model well described the cumulative germination and seedling emergence of A. coccinea with time. Germination influenced by osmotic potential and seedling emergence influenced by soil burial depth were well described by the logistic model. Overall results indicate that A. coccinea is photoblastic and requires temperatures greater than $15^{\circ}C$, osmotic potential greater than -2.0 bar, and soil burial depth shallower than 3 cm for its germination and seedling emergence, which were faster than M. vaginalis but slower than E. crus-galli.
Azolla is a genus of small aquatic ferns native to Asia, Africa, and America. Azolla is potentially significant as a nitrogen source in agriculture, particularly in conjunction with rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation. In addition, Azolla may either control weeds or act as a weed depending on management; therefore, we aimed to determine the effect of Azolla incorporation on weed (e.g., Monochoria vaginalis, Rotala indica, Aeschynomene indica, and Cyperus amuricus) control and its other benefits during rice cultivation. The effects of Azolla on weed emergence were evaluated based on plot area coverage by the Azolla mat, which appears as a green sheet over water, and the rate of weed emergence in paddy field. Weed occurrence was investigated 40 days after Azolla inoculation. Soil samples from the experimental plots were collected following harvest in 2014-2015, and analyzed. Moreover, rice growth, yield, and grain quality were measured. Azolla suppressed weed growth by 72%. Azolla mat incorporation in rice fields suppressed weed growth by over 60%. In addition, Azolla promoted nitrogen fixation. Compared with nitrogen management using chemical fertilizers, Azolla incorporation showed the potential for various positive effects, including the improvement of soil fertility by increasing total nitrogen, and organic matter content. Rice grown with Azolla maintained its yield without additional herbicide treatment. Moreover, the palatability of cooked rice was better when grown with Azolla.
The study was conducted to investigate the effect of weed interference and starter fertilizer on subsequent soybean seed quality at the Agricultural Research Farm and Laboratory of Razi University, Kermanshah, Iran. Two factorial experiment was laid-outon a randomized complete block design with four replications. First factor was starter fertilizer levels (0 and 25 kg $ha^{-1}$) applied in the forms of monoammonium phosphate, the second factor was different weed interference periods consisted of five initial weed-free periods (in which, plots were kept free of weeds for 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days after crop emergence (DAE) and then weeds were allowed to grow until harvest) and five initial weed-infested periods (in which, weeds were allowed to grow for 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60DAE, after which the plots were kept free of weeds until harvest). Full season weedy condition reduced 100-seed weight, seed germination percentage and seedling dry weight by 25.9, 13.3 and 22.5%, respectively and increased mean germination time and seed electrical conductivity by 55.8 and 24.3%, respectively as compared with full season weed-free control. However, the traits under study were not significantly influenced when field was kept free of weeds for at least 45 DAE (R1) or weedy condition was continued for less than 30 DAE (V8). There was a significant and negative correlation between weed biomass and seed weight (r = -0.93), so that when weed free condition was less than 45 DAE or weed infested period was continued for at least 30 DAE, soybean plants produced wrinkled and underdeveloped seeds with lower weights and qualities. Moreover, soybean seed quality reduction due to weed interference was more evident when starter fertilizer was applied and weeds interfered with soybean from the beginning of the growing season. Information from the present study is beneficial in soybean seed production systems and where farmers use the harvested seeds for the following planting.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of environmental factors affecting emergence and control of Sagittaria pygmaea Miquel in greenhouse. Emergence of S. pygmaea delayed as the amount of rice straw increased. When the tuber was sowned at 5 to 7㎝ soil depth the emergence of S. pygmaea delayed more in the hard condition of soil than that of the soft condition the large size tuber of S. pygmaea showed less control rate than the small size one at the rate of 2 to 3㎏ prod/10a of butachlor-naproanilide mixtures. The tubers of S. pygmaea seeded at the deeper soil depth decreased weeding efficicy of this mixture. Butachlor-naproanilide mikture showed higher weeding effects at the high temperature and at 2 to 4cm depths of water management than those of the low temperature and at 0cm and 6cm water depths. Weed control rate increased as the rate of butachlor-naproanilide mixture increased. The rate of 4㎏ (prod.)/10a showed good weed effect regardless of application times till 7.5 leaf stage of S. pygmaea. Tuber production of S. pygmea increased as the application time of mixture delayed.
The effects of standing water and cultivation frequency on emergence of Echinochloa glabrescens Munro ex. Hook were determined at varied seeding methods under simulated field conditions for 4 months. In soil-incorporated seeding method total emergence for 4 months was highest in saturated condition followed by 4, 2, and 8cm standing water, whereas total emergence of seeds sown at the soil surface was highest at 2cm standing water followed by 4cm, saturated soil, and 8cm standing water. Within 2 weeks the emergence was highest at 4cm and lowest at 2cm standing water with the soil-incorporated seeding, but the seeds sown at the soil surface with 2cm standing water resulted in the highest emergence. Ratio of emergence within 2 weeks over total emergence during 4 months was lowest at 2cm standing water in the soil incorporation, indication that 2cm standing water would be the critical water level for E. glabrescens. Since most of the seedling was emerged within 2 weeks just before cultivation, the emergence pattern was little affected by cultivation at each standing water level.
This study was conducted to compare soybean growth and yield and the degree of weed emergence according to no-tillage and conventional tillage system in two different drained paddy fields, loam of Chilgok series and silty clay loam of Deokpyeong series. In both soil conditions, the maturing time of the soybeans by the no-tillage system was two days earlier than that by the conventional tillage system. In the loam of Chilgok series, the stem length of the soybeans in the no-tillage system was 5.7 cm longer than that in the conventional tillage system. The miss-planted rate and diseased plants of black root rot (Calonectria iliacola) in the no-tillage system were 9.2% and 2.8% lower, respectively than those in the conventional tillage system. Also, the nodulation and seed yield in the no-tillage system were 32% and 13% more, respectively, than those in the conventional tillage system. In the silty clay loam of Deokpyeong series, the stem length of the soybeans in the no-tillage system was 4.6cm shorter than in the conventional tillage system. The diseased plants of black root rot (Calonectria iliacola) in the no-tillage system were 4.2% lower than those in the conventional tillage system. Also, no significant difference in the seed yield between the no-tillage and conventional tillage systems was observed. On the other hand, there was a lower occurrence of weed in the no-tillage system than in the conventional tillage system, and the income increased by 19% owing to yield increase and reduced management costs.
