  • Recent advances in the internet infrastructure have resulted in a large number of huge Web sites and portals worldwide. These Web sites are being visited by various types of users in many different ways. Among all the web page access sequences from different users, some of them occur so frequently that may need an attention from those who are interested. We call them frequent access patterns and access sequences that can be frequent the candidate patterns. Since these candidate patterns play an important role in the incremental Web mining, it is important to efficiently generate, add, delete, and search for them. This thesis presents a novel tree structure that can efficiently store the candidate patterns and a related set of algorithms for generating the tree structure adding new patterns, deleting unnecessary patterns, and searching for the needed ones. The proposed tree structure has a kind of the 3 dimensional link structure and its nodes are layered.

  • This study identified consumer perceptions of biotechnology crops, provided the types and sources of information on agricultural biotech that consumers demand, and derived effective methods of providing agricultural biotech information by analyzing problems and improving the information available online regarding agricultural biotech. The analysis of sources of information on agricultural biotech showed that there were differences between preference and reliability. Respondents preferred the Internet (47.6%) and TV (36.3%), while they relied on TV (36.3%) the most, followed by the Internet (26.6%), and academic papers and technical books (23.1%). Only 27.1% of the respondents answered that they collect information on agricultural biotech proactively. The higher frequency of information collection indicated a higher satisfaction rate with the information that was being collected. Survey results for the websites that respondents preferred and relied on to collect information were that the most preferred websites were web portals (53.4%), while reliability rates across the various types of websites were relatively even: web portals (28.4%), academic institution websites (19.1%), and websites that provide professional information (18.2%). Surveys that examined factors that were important in choosing the websites for collecting information on biotech indicated that factors such as "Providing verified data and citation" and "Providing objectivity" were the most important. Examining the preferences and factors of preference by content type showed that the demand for visual aids, such as photos, tables, graphs, and videos, was high, and there were statistically significant differences between the factors of preference by content type.

  • Transaction logs capture the interactions between online information retrieval systems and the users. Given the nature of the Web and Web users, transaction logs appear to be a reasonable and relevant method to collect and investigate information searching behaviors from a large number of Web users. Based on a series of research studies that analyzed Naver transaction logs, this study examines how transaction log analysis can be applied and contributed to the field of web searching and suggests future implications for the web searching field. It is expected that this study could contribute to the development and implementation of more effective Web search systems and services.

  • Semantic web portal is expected to overcome the shortcomings of the current web portals through advanced semantic web technologies and to be an effective and efficient method of knowledge sharing. In order to contribute to the knowledge sharing, semantic web portal needs to construct and integrate ontologies of each organization. Also, it needs to support search and navigation of inter-related knowledge. In this paper, we will design a semantic web portal that satisfies such requirements in the domain of display industry, and construct an ontology which links various knowledge of different fields. Moreover, we want to suggest an effective and automatic search/navigation method that supports customers who do not know the details of an ontology to easily get the desired results.

  • This study is to investigate the characteristics of the Invisible Web and many search services designed to serve as gateways to the Invisible Web and to evaluate searching the Invisible Web in the Services. The four services for searching the Invisible Web were selected to search the Invisible Web with 11 queries, that are Google as portals, ProFusion and Search.com as Invisible Web meta search engines, and IncyWincy as Invisible Web search engines. It was found that the effectiveness of Google's Invisible Web searching was better compared with the three Invisible Web search tools but the difference between the four systems was not significant((${\alpha}$=.055) The Invisible Web meta searching was better than the Web meta searching in the three search tools at the statistically significant level. The effectiveness measurement based on the ranks and relevance degree(quality) of relevant documents retrieved seemed appropriate to the ranked search results.

  • Most web portals provide a web directory service which selects and classifies web sites according to their subject matter. In order to investigate the directory access behavior of general Korean web users, this study analyzes directory access logs of NAVER, a major Korean web search engine. This study suggests a methodology to classify the total sessions into six different session types. This study also discusses directory access behaviors of the NAVER users by examining the distribution of sessions according to session types, the lengths of navigation within a session, and the most frequently visited categories. It is expected that this study could contribute to the development of more effective web directory services.

  • We compared nanotechnology web portal requirements using a Kano method, to identify similarities and dissimilarities in Kano-categorizations of features and functions required of nanotechnology among users in universities, government research institutes, and industry. Based upon data obtained from 130 user members of the National Nanotechnology Policy Centre, this study analyzed assessed asymmetries in web users' feelings based on hypothesized provision and non-provision of web portal requirements. In doing this, this study utilized measures and procedures suggested in the literature such as the most frequent-response categorization, customer satisfaction (dissatisfaction) coefficient, category strength and total strength, and Fong test. This study found that overall, sectors were an important factor in explaining the relationships between web portal requirements and user satisfaction/expectations. When these requirements were classified, users' perceptions of information contents requirements were consistent across the sectors, but the other functional requirements including communication and collaborations considerably varied.

  • This study aims to analyze and evaluate term suggestion services of major search portals, Naver and Google Korea. In particular, this study evaluated relevance and currency of related search terms provided, and analyzed characteristics such as number and distribution of terms, and queries that did not produce terms. This study also analyzed types of terms in terms of the relationship between queries and terms, and investigated types and characteristics of harmful terms and terms with grammatical errors. Finally, Korean queries and English queries, and popular queries and academic queries were compared in terms of the amount and relevance of search terms provided. The results of this study show that the relevance and currency of Naver's related search terms are somewhat higher than those of Google. Both Naver and Google tend to add terms to or delete terms from original queries, and provide identical search terms or synonym terms rather than providing entirely new search terms. The results of this study can be implemented to the portal's effective development of term suggestion services.
