This paper deals with the procedure and the results on the dynamic loading tests of two large diameter - long drilled shafts (diameter=2.0m, length=75m) which were embedded into weathered rocks through thick soft marine clays and sandy gravels. Prior to the real dynamic loading test, the numerical simulation for the test procedure was performed to check the structural stability of the main pile body using equivalent static elastic analysis and the application of the hammer system using WEAP (Wave Equation Analysis of Pile Driving). Through these preliminary analyses the dynamic loading tests on large diameter - long drilled shafts have been successfully achieved.

For quantitative evaluation of geotechnical engineering properties such as rippability and diggability, clear interpretation on the subsurface velocity structures should be preceded by figuring out top soil, weathered and soft rock layers, shape of basement, fracture zones, geologic boundary and etc. from the seismic refraction data. It is very important to set up suitable field parameters, which are the configuration of profile and its length, spacings of geophones and sources and topographic conditions, for increasing field data quality Geophone spacing of 3 to 5m is recommended in the land slope area for house land development and 5 to 10m in the tunnel site. In refraction tomography technique, the number of source points should be more than a half of available channel number of instrument, which can make topographic effect ignorable. Compared with core logging data, it is shown that the velocity range of the soil is less than 700m/s, weathered rock 700${\~}$1,200m/s, soft rock 1,200${\~}$1,800m/s. And the upper limit of P-wave velocity for rippability is estimated 1,200 to 1,800m/s in land slope area of gneiss. In case of tunnel site, it is recommended in tunnel design and construction to consider that tunnel is in contact with soft rock layer where three lineaments intersecting each other are recognized from the results of the other survey.
Bearing capacity of a drilled shaft can be separated into side resistance and base resistance. But in domestic design procedure side resistance is usually underestimated compared with base resistance. Results of bi-directional test showed that measured side resistances in each different layers are larger than those evaluated from several suggested methods. In this study, measured side resistances in each different layer of drilled shafts installed in domestic sites are analyzed and compared with evaluated side resistances from the method using revised SPT N value. For weathered rock and soft rock layer, from which rock core can hardly be obtained, we suggested new evaluated methods using revised SPT N value instead of the method using uniaxial compressive strength of rock. Resuts showed that the ranges of side resistance of cohesive and non-cohesive layer are $f_s{\leq}5tf/m^2$ and $f_s{\leq}15tf/m^2$ respectively. Range of side resistance in weathered rock is $15tf/m^2$ < $f_s{\leq}50tf/m^2$ and that in soft rock $f_s{\geq}35tf/m^2$.
Success or failure of the bi-directional pile load test for drilled shaft depends on point selection for loading cells, that is balanced location both uplift force and downward force. Methods to evaluate the ultimate unit side resistance in rockmass layer in both domestic and foreign are based on the uniaxial compression strength of rock core, which can hardly be obtained in domestic rockmass layers which are weathered rockmass layer and soft rockmass layer with very low RQD. Therefore, this study suggested the relation charts between the revised SPT N values and developed unit side resistance of each different layers, which were obtained from bi-directional pile load tests in various domestic sites. To evaluate the appropriateness of the relation charts, the developed unit side resistances from the relation charts were used to select the loading cell position and compared with the measured unit side resistances from field pile load test. Results showed that the developed side resistance from relation charts and the measured side resistance of weathered soil layer and weathered rock layer were very close. Average developed side resistance($1,325kN/m^2$), which are average of upper soft rock layer of loading device($1,151kN/m^2$) and lower($1,500kN/m^2$), was similar with the estimated value ($1,250kN/m^2$).
Transient/time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) soundings were carried out on reclaimed land, since the TEM sounding has good resolution of a conductive and thin overburden. The reclamation material is marine clay dredged from the seafloor, which is currently undergoing consolidation in the upper part of the dredged layer. The conductivity of the marine-origin clay is generally more than 0.3 S/m. The aim of the TEM sounding was to determine the depths of weathered and soft rocks overlain by thick and conductive overburden. The TEM responses were measured at delay times of 0.050-20.575 ms with a $30{\times}30$ m coincident loop array. Data from the TEM inversion and core logging indicate that the resistivities of the conductive overburden are less than 2 ${\Omega}$-m, while those of the weathered and soft rocks are 10-20 and 70 ${\Omega}$-m, respectively. The depth to weathered rock is 26-58 m and the depth to soft rock is 46-75 m.

We have analyzed the stability for cut-slopes at main street 3-2 line section in Pa-ju local industrial complex. After studying an additional boring test, laboratory test and face mapping etc., we have determined the extent of reinforcement, slope inclinations and soil strength parameter from the analysis of test results. After changing the inclination of slopes for ground limit and carrying out the analysis of slope stability, we applied the Mass Nailing Method to the site because of need for reinforcement to soil and weathered rock slopes. In slope for soft and hard rock sections, we also reinforced the sections that are difficult to obtain the safety without reinforcement in alteration zone.
To evaluate methods of determining near-surface shear-wave velocities (${\nu}_s$), we derived dispersion curves of Rayleigh waves generated by both passive and active sources in Chuncheon, Korea. Microtremors were recorded for 5 minutes in each of four triangular arrays with radii of 5 ~ 40 m. Those data were analyzed using the Spatial Autocorrelation method. Rayleigh waves were also generated by a hammer source and recorded in the same area for 2 s using 24 4.5-Hz geophones. Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves was applied to those data. Velocity spectra were derived with relatively high signal-to-noise ratios in the frequency ranges of 7 ~ 19 and 11 ~ 50 Hz for the microtremors and synthetically generated Rayleigh waves, respectively. The resultant dispersion curves were combined as one and then input to inversion to derive shear wave velocities that were compared with a lithology log from a nearby well. Shearwave velocities in the top soil and soft-rock layers are almost constant with values of 221 and 846 m/s, respectively; while the inverse-modeled ${\nu}_s$ increases linearly in the gravelly sand, cobbles, and weathered-rock layers. If rock type is classified based on shear-wave velocity, the inversion-derived boundary between weathered-rock and soft rock may be about 5 m deeper than in the well log.

The purpose of this research work is to propose an analytical method of tunnel design based on reasonable site data. Therefore the proposed design method consists of monitoring data and Modified In Situ Rock Model. Also the Rock Mass Rating for very poor quality rock is very difficult to estimate, the balances between the ratings may no longer gives a reliable basis for the rock mass strength. But in reality Rock Mass Rating is only the property which can be obtained from face mapping records of the exposed tunnel face during construction stage. Evaluation of rock parameters for the actual design prior to tunnel construction should be corrected during tunnelling process in particularly complex ground conditions. This study intends to investigate application of in-situ rock model to soft rock tunnelling (weathered rock) by face mapping results and site measurement data that are obtained at the costraction site of Seoul Subway Tunnel. For the preparation of more reliable ground parameters, the Rock Mass Rating values for the weathered rocks were modified and readjusted in accordance with the measurement data. The modified input parameters obtained by the proposed method are used for the prediction of the tunnel behavior at subsequent construction stages. The results of this study revealed that more reasonable feed back tunnel analysis can be possible as suggested. Ample measurement data would be able to confirm the new proposed technique in this research work.

Several remedial works were attempted to stabilize the collapsed area of the inlet slopes of diversion tunnel, but prevention of any further movement was being only carried out at beginning stage by filling the area with aggregates and rock debris, after several cracks had been initiated and developed around the area. The extra specialty developed folding zone is consisted with highly weathered Greywacke and Black shale. The suggested solution is to improve the properties of the rock mass of failed area by choosing the optimum level of reinforcement through the increment of slope rock support design so as to control the movement of slopes during the re-excavation. The Bakun hydroelectric project includes the construction of a hydroelectric power plant with an installed capacity of 2,520MW and a power transmission system connecting to the existing transmission networks in Sarawak and Western Malaysia. The power station will consist of a 210m height Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam. During the construction of the dam and the power facilities the Balui River has to be diverted of the tunnels is 12m and the tunnel width is 16m at the portal area. This paper describes the stability analysis and design methods for the open cut rock slopes in the inlet area of the diversion tunnels. The geotechnical parameters employed in stability calculations were given as a function of four defined Rock Mass Type (RMT) which were based on RMR system from Bieniawski. The stability calculations procedure of the rock slopes are divided into two stages. In the first stage, it is calculated for the stability of each "global" slope without any rock support and shotcrete system. In the second stage, it is calculated for each "local" slope stability with berms and supported with rock bolts and shotcrete. The monitoring instrumentation was performed continuously and some of the design modification was carried out in order to increase the safety of failed area based on the unforeseen geological risks during the open cut excavation.
A comparison study is made between the dynamic properties of an argillaceous siltstone and its grouting-reinforced body. The purpose is to investigate how grout injection can help repair broken soft rocks. A slightly weathered argillaceous siltstone is selected, and part of the siltstone is mechanically crushed and cemented with Portland cement to simulate the grouting-reinforced body. Core specimens with the size of $50mm{\times}38mm$ are prepared from the original rock and the grouting-reinforced body. Impact tests on these samples are then carried out using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus. Failure patterns are analyzed and geotechnical parameters of the specimens are estimated. Based on the experimental results, for the grouting-reinforced body, its shock resistance is poorer than that of the original rock, and most cracks happen in the cementation boundaries between the cement mortar and the original rock particles. It was observed that the grouting-reinforced body ends up with more fragmented residues, most of them have larger fractal dimensions, and its dynamic strength is generally lower. The mass ratio of broken rocks to cement has a significant effect on its dynamic properties and there is an optimal ratio that the maximum dynamic peak strength can be achieved. The dynamic strain-softening behavior of the grouting-reinforced body is more significant compared with that of the original rock. Both the time dependent damage model and the modified overstress damage model are equally applicable to the original rock, but the former performs much better compared with the latter for the grouting-reinforced body. In addition, it was also shown that water content and impact velocity both have significant effect on dynamic properties of the original rock and its grouting-reinforced body. Higher water content leads to more small broken rock pieces, larger fractal dimensions, lower dynamic peak strength and smaller elastic modulus. However, the water content plays a minor role in fractal dimensions when the impact velocity is beyond a certain value. Higher impact loading rate leads to higher degree of fragmentation and larger fractal dimensions both in argillaceous siltstone and its grouting-reinforced body. These results provide a sound basis for the quantitative evaluation on how cement grouting can contribute to the repair of broken soft rocks.
