This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano-oil with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano-particles in the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors. Frictional loss in the thrust slide-bearing occupies a large part of total mechanical loss in scroll compressors. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear using nano-oil are evaluated using the thrust bearing tester for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction at the thrust slide-bearing as a function of normal loads up to 4,000 N and orbiting speed up to 3,200 rpm. It is found that the coefficient of friction increases with decreasing orbiting speed and normal force. The friction coefficient of carbon nano-oil is 0.015, while that of pure oil is 0.023 under the conditions of refrigerant gas R-22 at the pressure of 5 bars. It is believed that carbon nano-particles can be coated on the friction surfaces and the interaction of nano-particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Carbon nano-oil enhances the characteristics of the anti-wear and friction at the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors.

[ $Si_3N_4$ ] composites have been extensively studied for engineering ceramics, because it has excellent room and high temperature strength, wear resistance properties, good resistance to oxidation, and good thermal and chemical stability. In the present work, carbon short fiber reinforced $Si_3N_4$ ceramics were fabricated by hot press method in $N_2$ atmosphere at $1800^{\circ}C$ using $Al_2O_3\;and\;Y_2O_3$ as sintering additives. Content of carbon short fiber was $0\%,\;0.1\%\;and\;0.3\%$. The composites were evaluated in terms of density, flexural strength and elastic modulus through the 3-point bending test at room temperature. Also, The wear behavior was determined by the pin on disk wear tester using silicon nitride ball. Experimental density and flexural strength decreased with increasing content of carbon fiber. But specific modulus increased with increasing content of carbon fiber. In addition, friction coefficient and specific wear loss decreased with increasing content of carbon short fiber by reason of interfacial defects between matrix and fiber.

In this paper, we present an experimental investigation of the friction coefficient and wear area change of carbon/epoxy and E-glass/epoxy composites depending on the fiber direction (0°/90°). We compared the results of the case where the sliding direction is parallel to the fiber direction (0°) with that of the case where it is perpendicular to the fiber direction (90°). The ball-on-plate wear test equipment was used to cause wear in both directions. Two types of specimens were prepared with thicknesses of 3 mm-one made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic composite (CFRP) and the other of glass fiber reinforced plastic composite (GFRP). A normal force of 20 N was applied to the specimen and the sliding speed was 10 mm/s and the sliding distance was set to 20 m to perform the wear test. The CFRP demonstrates superior tribological characteristics compared to the GFRP. This outcome is attributed to graphitization of carbon, which serves as solid lubricating particles. In addition, both CFRP and GFRP are worn more in the 90° direction than in the 0° direction. This is due to the greater occurrence of fiber breakage and separation in the 90° direction than in the 0° direction. This study is expected to be utilized as basic data for understanding the friction and wear characteristics of CFRP and GFRP composites along the fiber direction and to apply the appropriate material.
Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) is a promising material for use in many potential applications because of its outstanding physical properties such as high thermal stability, high abrasive wear resistance, and super hardness. Even though 316L austenitic stainless steel (STS) has poor wear resistance causing it to be toxic in the body due to wear and material chips, 316L STS has been used for implant biomaterials in orthopedics due to its good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Therefore, in the present study, c-BN films with a $B_4C$ layer were applied to a 316L STS specimen in order to improve its wear resistance. The deposition of the c-BN films was performed using an r.f. (13.56 MHz) magnetron sputtering system with a $B_4C$ target. The coating layers were characterized using XPS and SEM, and the mechanical properties were investigated using a nanoindenter. The friction coefficient of the c-BN coated 316L STS steel was obtained using a pin-on-disk according to the ASTM G163-99. The thickness of the obtained c-BN and $B_4C$ were about 220 nm and 630 nm, respectively. The high resolution XPS spectra analysis of B1s and N1s revealed that the c-BN film was mainly composed of $sp^3$ BN bonds. The hardness and elastic modulus of the c-BN measured by the nanoindenter were 46.8 GPa and 345.7 GPa, respectively. The friction coefficient of the c-BN coated 316L STS was decreased from 3.5 to 1.6. The wear property of the c-BN coated 316L STS was enhanced by a factor of two.
This research was designed to figure out the perception and attitude of university students toward urban outdoor wear and to provide the guidelines for product quality improvement using Kano model. A total of 270 responses were analyzed by SPSS 20.0 through frequency and factor analysis. Respondents' levels for outdoor activity & outdoor products possession being still low, steady growth in urban outdoor wear market is expected. A total of eight quality factors were identified through factor analysis; suitability, production quality, functionality, ease of care, fabric performance, portability, fashionability, and symbolism. Based on Kano model, quality factors of urban outdoor wear were categorized into three groups: one-dimensional; indifferent; and must-be quality factor. It was found that consumers were satisfied with urban outdoor wear only when it meets the needs for suitability for body types and ease of care, meaning that manufactures should be cautious not to lose these features. Being must-be quality factor, production quality(form stability, quality of subsidiary materials), and fabric performance such as colorfastness should be basically satisfied. The relative importance of each quality feature on satisfaction/dissatisfaction was investigated using CSC(customer satisfaction coefficient). Based on the CSC, every item was classified again. Attractive quality features with large CSC were shown in suitability factor. Must-be quality features with small CSC were mainly shown in functionality and fabric performance factors. These findings imply that manufactures of urban outdoor wear should not only maintain the production quality but also focus on suitability features to differentiate their product with previous products.

Hemispherical dimples with diameter, ø=$60{\mu}m$ and depth, d= $30{\mu}m$ were created on the metal and ceramics surfaces using INYA 10 watt Laser of 1064 nm wavelength. This study reports the influence of dimple pitch on friction and wear behavior rather than dimple size, depth and density. LST was performed on the specimens with dimple pitch and density in the range of 80 to-$200{\mu}m$ and 44 to 7 %, respectively. Surface topography was analyzed by using roughness measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and optical microscopy. Friction and wear characteristics were analyzed on textured surfaces at lubricating environment to observe the effect of surface texturing on reduction of friction and wear. Reduction on coefficient of friction was achieved by more than 70% due to the dual behavior of dimples as wear (debris) traps and lubricant reservoirs. Wear reduced significantly for the textured surface as compared to the polished surface. Moreover, the friction coefficient of the textured specimens reduced with increasing load and speed which may be attributed to the transition of lubrication regime.
Superlubricity refers to the lubrication phenomenon that occurs when the friction coefficient is lower than 0.01. In recent years, this phenomenon has received a significant amount of attention because it can greatly contribute to the reduction of economic and environmental losses caused by friction and wear. In the case of acid lubricants, only ceramic materials can be used for superlubricity, and it takes a long running-in period to enter the superlubricity regime. In this work, we investigated the superlubricity effect of vitreous enamel coating on SUS304. We also examined the running-in period of vitreous enamel coating under phosphoric acid lubricant condition with respect to surface treatments. Drying and polishing methods were used to treat the vitreous enamel coating on the specimen. The friction experimental results revealed that superlubricity could be achieved with vitreous enamel coating. It was also found that the drying and polishing methods can significantly reduce the running-in period and improve the wear properties of vitreous enamel coating. In particular, the polishing method shortened the running-in period by approximately 99% and reduced the wear rate by approximately 99%, compared to nontreated vitreous enamel coating.
In this paper, the effects of material properties on the friction and wear behavior of pure metals are investigated. The sliding material pairs are selected based on their relative compatibility and relative hardness ratio of the specimen. The initial and steady-state friction coefficients are obtained in the experiments and the wear rates are quantitatively investigated. It is shown that the initial friction coefficient is affected by the hardness ratio of sliding materials. Furthermore, in steady state condition, neither hardness ratio nor compatibility has significant influence on the frictional behavior. As for wear, the ductility of the metal affects the wear particle generation process which in turn affects the frictional behavior. The findings of this research suggest that frictional interaction cannot be simply characterized by either compatibility or hardness ratio of the materials undergoing sliding contact.

The objective of this study is to evaluate corrosive wear resistance of metals used for bearings and gears in seawater. Sliding wear test of ferrous and copper materials against $Al_2O_3$ were carried out in artificial seawater using an electrochemical potentiostat. As the results, the wear rate and the coefficient of friction of the copper materials are lower than those of the ferrous materials. The corrosive wear of stainless steel is remarkably affected by normal load and sliding speed in view of tribological characteristics including adhesion and corrosion products.

This paper presents a wear diagnosis method for centrifugal impellers by using an accelerometer. The features are calculated from raw and wavelet transformed signals with several statistical methods applied in time or frequency domains. From the effectiveness coefficient test, it is shown that 7th level of wavelet transformed signal is suitable for wear classification problems. A neural network with 5 feature sets is applied to diagnose the wear magnitude of pump impellers. The verification result reveals that high accuracy for the wear diagnosis of impellers can be obtained by using wavelet features transformed from acceleration signals.
