  • Since large-scale commercial wind turbine generator systems such as MW-class wind turbines are becoming widely operated, the vibration and distortion of the blade are becoming larger and larger. Therefore the soft structure design instead of the solid-design is one of the important concepts to reduce the structural load and the cost of the wind turbine rotors. The objectives of the study are development of the fluid-structure coupled analysis code and evaluation of soft rotor-blade design to reduce the unsteady structural blade load. In this paper, fluid-structure coupled analysis for the HAWT rotor blade is performed by free wake panel method coupled with hinge-spring blade model for the flapwise blade motion. In the model, the continuous deflection of the rotor blade is represented by flapping angle of the hinge with one degree of freedom. The calculation results are evaluated by comparison with the database of the NREL unsteady aerodynamic experiment. In the analysis the unsteady flapwise moments in yawed inflow conditions are compared for the blades with different flapwise eigen frequencies.

  • The sensitivity of the extratropical jet to the stratospheric mean state is investigated by conducting a series of idealized numerical experiments using a dynamic-core general circulation model. When the polar stratosphere is forced to be cold, the extratropical jet, defined by the 850-hPa zonal wind, tends to shift poleward without much change in its intensity. The opposite is also true when the polar stratosphere becomes warm. This jet response, however, is not exactly linear. A poleward jet shift under a cold vortex is much weaker than an equatorward jet shift under a warm vortex. The jet intensity change is also larger under a warm vortex. This result indicates that the stratosphere-troposphere downward coupling is more efficient for the warm and weak polar vortex. This finding is consistent with a stronger downward coupling during stratospheric sudden warming than vortex intensification events in the Northern Hemisphere winter, possibly providing a clue to better understand the observed stratosphere-troposphere downward coupling.

  • Two-dimensional MT (Magneto-Telluric) modeling is performed to verify the validity of difference arrow for GDS(Geomagnetic Depth Sounding) survey. The electromagnetic mutual coupling between the sea and in-land conductor is used as a criterion that judges the validity of difference arrow. In this study, the mutual coupling between them is examined according to the spatial distance between them and the period of magnetic variations. The difference arrow is valid for conductors located at surface which are far from the sea or when the long period is used, but the mutual coupling is weak for buried conductor in all the periods. However, when a conductor extends vertically down to the deep part, the validity of difference arrow is in doubt, since the strong mutual coupling influences up to the long period. Therefore, to remove the known conductor effect such as sea effect from the observed induction arrow, the mutual coupling between them must be examined and the caution must be exercised in interpreting the resultant difference arrow if mutual coupling between them is strong.

  • Analyses with various Sea Surface Temperature (SST) products indicate that the interannual variability of the area-averaged SST in the East/Japan Sea (EJS) is well correlated to that of Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) during 1979-2018, especially in the autumn. The regression analysis with the wind vectors at 200 hPa, where the strongest jet stream flows, suggests that the long-term variability of the intensity as well as the meridional movement of the jet stream are related to the coupling of the autumn EJS SST and PDO. When the axis of the jet stream moves poleward (equatorward) with its weakening (strengthening), both the EJS SST and North Pacific SST increase (decrease). This suggests that both the intensity and meridional movement of the jet stream are possibly related to the coupling of the autumn EJS SST and PDO. However, effects of a weak jet stream during the summer and the strong East Asian winter monsoon make weak coupling between the EJS SST and PDO.

  • When the crankshaft of diesel engine has more than 3 throws, which are arranged in a different plane, its vibration induces coupled motions, especially the coupled torsional and axial vibration. Nowadays, the torsional vibration which is influenced rather weak than axial one, can be theoretically calculated fairly accurately, but theoretical calculation results of the axial vibration which is influenced strongly from torsional vibration is not so good. To get accurate calculation results of axial vibration, coupled axial-torsional vibration must be treated. In this investigation, coupled effects of vibration of diesel engine propulsion shafting are analyzed theoretically and some simple calculation methods are also studied. On this first report, effects of coupling on natural frequencies and their modes are mainly studied, setting the each mass in 4 degrees of freedom.

  • The frequency characteristics of sound radiated by a line array of bubbles in water was investigated theoretically and experimentally. In the theory we proposed an effective coupled harmonic oscillator model for a line array of bubbles treating the interaction of only adjacent bubbles as the coupling of classical harmonic oscillators. For weak coupling of bubbles that the distance between adjacent bubbles is larger than the diameter of a bubble, the pressented theoretical model shows very good agreement with the experimental results.

  • We report experiemtnal results demonstrating the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in trapped Cs atoms. EIT occurs at the Λ-type configuration where the re0-pumping laser simultaneously plays a role as the coupling laser in the presence of a magneto-optical trapping and weak magnetic fields. Dependences of EIT signal on both the intensity and the detuning of the coupling laser were investigated. Linear absorption spectra for cold cesium atoms in the magneto-optical trap have been observed and shown the pronounced dispersion-like structure with sub-natural linewidth of 1 MHz due to the cooling laser.

  • Recent improvement in semiconductor technology make efficient switching possible at higher frequencies, which benefits the application of wireless inductive energy transfer. However, a higher frequency does not alter the magnetic coupling between energy transmitter and receiver. Due to the still weak magnetic coupling between transmitting and receiving sides that are separated by a substantial air gap, energy circulates in the primary transmitting side without being transferred to the secondary receiving side. This paper proposes an analysis on the system efficiency to determine the optimal impedance requirement for coils, rectifier and DC-DC Converter. A novel Boost DC-DC Converter is designed to provide the optimal impedance matching in WPT(Wireless Power Transfer) system for various loads.

  • The relationship between ferromagnet anisotropic magnetization and the antiferromagnet atomic spin configuration was investigated for various angles of the uniaxial deposition magnetic field of the FeMn layer in the Corning glass/Ta(5nm)/NiFe(7nm)/FeMn(25nm)/Ta(5nm) multilayer that was prepared by the ion beam sputter deposition. The exchange bias field ($H_{ex}$) obtained from the measurement of the easy-axis MR loop decreased to 40 Oe at the deposition field angle of $45^{\circ}$, and to 0 Oe at the angle of $90^{\circ}$. When the difference between the uniaxial axis between the ferromagnet NiFe and the antiferromagnet FeMn was $90^{\circ}$, the strong antiferromagnetic dipole moment of FeMn caused the weak ferromagnetic dipole moment of NiFe to rotate in the interface.

  • The growth and characterization of $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As/In_{0.5}Al_{0.5}As$ narrow-gap inverted high electron mobility transistor structures, developed as a candidate material for spin-injection devices, are presented in this study. We have grown samples possessing surface $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As$ channels of different thicknesses (30 nm and 60 nm) both with and without a thin 3 nm $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As$ cap layer by using molecular beam epitaxy. We then investigated the in-plane transport properties as well as the Rashba spin-orbit coupling constant of the two-dimensional electron gas confined at the heterojunction interface.
