Measurement of Fracture Toughness of WC-Co Composites by Micro-Vickers Indentation Cracks (미소 비커스 압입균열에 의한 초경합금의 파괴 인성치 측정)

  • Various techniques to measure fracture toughness which is an important parameter to predict fracture behavious of structural materials have been reported. Among these mathods, this paper describes the micro-Vickers indentation crack method to estimate the fracture toughness of some WC-Co composites. Two indentation crack patterns (such as radial-median cracks (orhalf-penny cracks) and Palmqvist cracks generated during indentation) are referred precisely. The fracture toughness of WC-4.7wt%Co, WC-6wr%Co and WE-9wr%Co composites were estimated by using some equations given by Shetty et al., Nihara et al. in this study. We show the reliability of indentation method by comparing the results with those from literatures. The appropriate equation to estimate the fracture toughness in the case of WC-Co composite is given. In addition, some technical informations in terms of the crack length by indentation in estimating the existence of the surface residual stress that prevents to obtain an accurate fracture toughness are presented.

방전 플라즈마 소결 공법을 이용한 FSW-Tool 용 $WC-5Mo_2C-5Co$ 소결체 제조와 기계적 특성 평가

  • 초경합금은 경도가 높은 재료를 말하며 일반적으로는 탄화텅스텐(WC)계 재료를 말한다. 국내 현재 초경합금 동향은 반도체 산업, 내마모성 공구, 절삭공구, 금형 등 많은 분야에 사용되어지고 있다. 또한 최근 들어 FSW (Friction Stir Welding, FSW)기술이 발전함에 따라 접합기술개발이 다양화되면서 FSW Tool의 고성능의 초경 재료가 요구되어지며 장수명의 Tool개발이 되어야 한다. 국내에서는 초경 합금 재료로 사용되어지고 있는 텅스텐 카바이드(WC)와 코발트(Co)를 이용하여 많은 연구가 진행되었다. 본 실험에서는 텅스텐 카바이드와 코발트 및 몰르브덴 카바이드를 혼합하여 소결체를 제조하였다. 실험에 사용된 텅스텐 카바이드는 높은 경도를 가지고 강한 취성을 나타내며, 소결에 어려운 단점이 있다. 이러한 단점을 코발트와 몰리브덴 카바이드를 첨가하여 소결온도를 낮춰주는 역할과 액상 소결시 텅스텐카바이드 입자사이에 침투하여 액상소결에 의한 치밀화가 가능하게 해주며 인성이 향상되어 고인성 재료를 만들 수 있었다. 본 실험에서는 합성과 치밀화가 동시에 진행되는 SPS (Spark Plasma Sintering:SPS) 장비를 이용하여 실험을 진행하였다. 이 방법은 방전플라즈마 소결 공법으로, 기존의 연소법과 열간 가압기술(Hot-press, HIP)을 결합한 방식으로 단 시간, 단일공정으로 치밀한 소결체를 얻을 수 있는 장점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 $WC-5Mo_2C$-5wt%Co 소결체 제조를 위해 원소 분말을 Horizontal ball milling 혼합하였다. 균일하게 혼합된 분말을 흑연다이에 충진하여 펄스전류와 기계적 압력을 동시에 가하여 $WC-5Mo_2C-5Co$ 복합재료를 제조하고 소결체의 밀도, 순도, 상변태, 미세조직 등을 분석 및 평가하였다. SPS공정 조건은 고진공하에서 $1,200^{\circ}C$-60MPa, 펄스비 12:1 조건으로 수행하였으며, 얻어진 $WC-5Mo_2C-5Co$ 소결체의 상대 밀도는 98%이상 이였다. 또한, 결정립 크기는 약 400 nm였으며, 경도는 $2,453kg/mm^2$를 나타내었다.

Synthesis of LiCoO2 Powders using Recycled Cobalt Precursors from Waste WC-Co Hard Metal (폐 WC-Co계 초경합금에서 추출된 코발트 재생 원료를 이용한 LiCoO2 입자 합성 연구)

  • [ $LiCoO_2$ ] a cathode material for lithium rechargeable batteries, was prepared using recycled $Co_3O_4$. First, the cobalt hydroxide powders were separated from waste WC-Co hard metal with acid-base chemical treatment, and then the impurities were eliminated by centrifuge method. Subsequently, $Co_3O_4$ powders were prepared by thermal treatment of resulting $Co(OH)_2$. By adding a certain amount of $Li_2CO_3$ and $LiOH{\cdot}H_2O$, the $LiCoO_2$ was obtained by sintering for 10 h in air at $800^{\circ}C$. The synthesized $LiCoO_2$ particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis.

  • Nano-structured tungsten carbide compacts with cobalt matrices (WC-Co) offer new opportunities for achieving superior hardness and toughness combinations. A unified modeling and simulation tool has been developed to produce maps of sintering pathways from nanocrystalline WC powder to sintered nano-structured WC-Co compacts. This tool includes (1) die compaction, (2) grain growth, (3) densification, (4) sensitivity analysis, and (5) optimization. All material parameters were obtained by curve fitting based on results with two WC-Co powders. Critical processing parameters are determined based on sensitivity analysis and are optimized to minimize grain size with high density.

A Study on Durability Characteristics for Plungers of Conventional Ceramic and Surface Modification by Powder Coating Using High Velocity Oxygen Fuel Thermal Spray (기존 세라믹 및 초고속 용사 분말피막 표면개질 플런저의 내구성 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The high velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) thermal spray is a kind of surface modification techniques to produce the sprayed coating layer. This process is to form the coating layer after spraying the powder to molten or semi-molten state by the ultra-high speed at the high-temperature heat source and conflicting with a substrate. The efficiency of thermal spraying is dropped, however, because the semi-molten powder in a spray process become a factor that degrades the mechanical property by the formed pore within the coating layer. Therefore, it is necessary to melt completely the thermal spray powder in order to produce the coating layer with an optimal adhesive force. In this study, to improve the wear resistance, corrosion resistance and heat resistance, the plungers of high-speed and ultra-high pressure reciprocating hydraulic pumps used in ironworks are manufactured with STS $420J_2$ and are coated by the powders of WC-Co-Cr and WC-Cr-Ni including the WC of high hardness using a HVOF thermal sprayer developed in this laboratory. These are called by the surface-modified plungers. The surface roughness, hardness, and surface and cross-sectional microstructure of these two surface-modified and conventional ceramic plungers are measured and compared before operation with after operation for 100 days. It is found that the values of centerline average surface roughness and maximum height for conventional ceramic plunger are 9.5 to 10.8 and 5.2 to 5.7 times higher than those of surface-modified ones coated by WC-Co-Cr and WC-Cr-Ni because the fine tops and bottoms on surface roughness curve of conventional ceramic plunger are approximately 100 times higher than those of surface-modified ones. In addition, the pores and scratches in the surface microstructure are considerably formed in the order of conventional ceramic, WC-Cr-Ni and WC-Co-Cr surface-modified plungers. The greater the WC content of high hardness powder is less the change in the plunger surface.

  • Recently, WC-Co have some excellent properities as the material for the mechanical component such as metallic moulding parts, ball dies parts, and punch parts. This paper describes the surface roughness and grinding force caused by experimental study on the surface grinding of WC-Co with ultra-precision like a mirror shape using diamond wheel. Also, some investigations are carried out using WA grinding wheel to increase improved ground surface roughness such as polishing, lapping effect. Some important results obtained here are summarized as follow. 1) Within this experimental grinding condition, we can be obtained $R_{max}.\;2\mu\textrm{m}\;R_a\;0.3\mu\textrm{m}$ whichare the most favourable ground surface roughness using #140 diamond wheel, and improved surface roughness values about 20 .approx. 25% throughout 5 times sparkout grinding 2) The value of surface roughness is Rmax. $0.49\mu\textrm{m},\;R_a\;0.06\mu\textrm{m}$ using #600 diamond wheel. 3) The area of no rack zone is less than $F_{n}$ 0.27N/mm, Ft 0.009N/mm

  • Diamond thin films were synthesized on WC-Co substrate at various experimental parameters using 13.56MHz RF PACVD)radio frequency plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition). In order to increased the nucleation density, the WC-Co substrate was polished with 3${\mu}m$ diamond paste. And the WC-Co substrate was preatreated in $HNO_3\;:\;H_2O$ = 1:1 and $O_2$ plasma. In $H_2-CH_4$ gas mixture, the crystallinity of thin film increased with decreasing $CH_4$ concentration at 800W discharge power and 20torr reaction pressure. In $H_2-CH_4-O_2$ gas mixture, the crystallinity of thin film increased with increasing $O_2$ concentration at 800W discharge power, 200torr reaction pressure and 4% $CH_4$ concentration.

  • This paper describes the experimental results on direct selective laser sintering of WC-Co mixture. The experiments were carried out within an air, argon and nitrogen atmosphere. The main problem occurred during sintering within an air atmosphere was oxidation of WC-Co mixture. As the power of laser is increased and scanning speed is decreased, more severe oxidation takes place. Within an argon and nitrogen atmosphere the oxidation is reduced significantly. As the energy density is increased the thickness of the sintered layer is increased.
