  • A passive Optical Network (PON) is famous for the most cost-efficient solution among the optical networks. This is because there is no active device between a central office and subscribers. A wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) offers each subscriber to feel unlimited bandwidth. A WDM-PON, however, has a cost problem that WDM-PON is used commercially. To solve this trouble, it is surveyed that a Sub-Carrier Multiplexing (SCM) used in a WDM-PON increases the number of subscribers. The performance of WDM/SCM-PON varies with various noises. The several FEC Codes can reduce the effects of noise and improve the performance of the system. Thus, Choosing a suitable FEC code is important work. This paper describes that a Reed-Solomon (RS) code is the most suitable code for WDM/SCM-PON at the object of 100 Mbps and $10^{-9}$ BER

  • In wavelength-division-multiplexing(WDM) networks a link failure may cause the failure of several high-bit-rate optical channels, thereby leading to large data loss. Recently, various protection and restoration mechanisms have been proposed to efficiently deal with this problem in mesh networks. Among them, dedicated path protection(DPP) is a promising candidate because of its ultra-fast restoration time and robustness. In this work we investigate the issue of planning and optimization of WDM networks with DPP. Integer linear programming(ILP), in particular, is one of the most common exact method to solve the design optimization problem for protected WDM networks. Traditional ILP formalizations to solve this problem rely on the classical flow or route formulation approaches, but both these approaches suffer from a excessively high computational burden. In this paper, we present a variable-aggregation method that has the ability of significantly reducing the complexity of the traditional flow formulation. We compare also the computational burden of flow formulation with variable aggregation both with the classical flow and route formulations. The comparison is carried out by applying the three alternative methods to the optimization of two case-study networks.

  • A simple water level measurement method based on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is proposed and demonstrated. The measurement principle is based on the change of Fresnel reflection occurring at the end facet of the optical fiber tip (OFT). To increase the spatial resolution of water level sensing, a broadband light source (BLS) and an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) are employed. The OFTs are multiplexed with the dedicated wavelength channels of AWG. By measuring all of the reflection powers reflected at the OFTs with a proposed on-site reflectometer, the water level can be monitored continuously for a fast emergency response. Moreover, it can be implemented easily with the commercially available optical components and devices with the simple configuration.

  • With the current advances in optical WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) networking technologies and the increasing demand for network bandwidth the Next Generation Internet is expected to be a network that runs IP(Internet Protocol) directly over WDM-based optical networks. The network control architecture for the IP over WDM networks is different from that of traditional Internet since the underlying WDM devices have more constraints than electronic IP routers such as the lack of optical buffers and wavelength continuity property etc. In this paper we introduce several architectural models for implementing IP over WDM networks and propose an integrated network control framework for the IP over WDM networks. This framework leverages the traffic engineering control architecture for the MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) networks and is mainly developed for the IP over packet-switched WDM networks. We also report several preliminary simulation results of contention resolution schemes in the packet-switched WDM networks.

  • Packet-switched wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) ring networks have been extensively studied as solutions to the increasing amount of traffic in metropolitan area networks, which is widely expected to be a mix of unicast and multicast traffic. In this paper we study the fairness between unicasting and multicasting in slotted packet-switched WDM ring networks that employ a tunable transmitter and fixed tuned receiver at each node and a posteriori buffer selection. We find that single-step longest queue selection algorithm generally results in unfairness between unicasting and multicasting or a lilted relative priority for multicast vs. unicast traffic. We present the various virtual output queue structures and their performance.

  • We demonstrate a cost effective broadcast signal transmission at 1.25-Gb/s with 100 GHz channel spacing based on a broadband light source (BLS) for a wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical network (WDM-PON). The BLS is implemented by using mutually injected Fabry-Perot laser diodes (MI F-P LDs). The error-free transmission without a forward error correction (FEC) is achieved by its low relative intensity noise (RIN). The number of usable modes is determined by RIN and/or extinction ratio (ER) in the spectrum sliced light output.

  • Because of internet's growth, today's network has a serious bandwidth problem. WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is a solution of this problem. In the WDM networks, QoS(Quality of Service) is as important as bandwidth. And today's voice over IP technology makes a lot of delay-sensitive internet traffic. De]ay-sensitive internet traffic is growing up, so more QoS is needed. We proposed effective solution to assign QoS.

  • In this paper, we investigate survivability in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks and propose a new algorithm called improved shared-path protection (ISPP) to completely tolerate the double-link failures. Compared with previous algorithms for protecting double-link failures, i.e., shared-path protection (SPP) and shared-link protection (SLP), the advantage of ISPP is to allow primary paths and backup paths to share the mixed wavelength-links based on the proposed new rules in which some primary wavelength-links can be changed to mixed wavelength-links, which can be shared by primary paths and backup paths. In addition, some mixed wavelength-links also can be shared by different backup paths for saving resources. Simulation results show that ISPP algorithm performs better in resource utilization ratio and blocking probability than conventional SPP and SLP algorithms.

  • We demonstrated the feasibility of an amplified wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) architecture based on broadband light source (BLS) seeded optical sources and a novel bidirectional reach extender. Our bidirectional reach extender could provide an amplification of both downstream and upstream signals as well as a BLS output for the upstream WDM signal generation. An error-free 1.25 Gb/s signal transmission over a 100-km long single-mode fiber was achieved in a bidirectional WDM-PON using BLS seeded reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) sources.
