  • An overhead catenary system is the one of the main subjects for increasing speed in electric railway. When a vehicle increases the speed over 350km/h, vibrations and wave propagation reflections occur severely. Therefore, the system suitable for the speed are needed. A wave propagation speed of contact wire is the main criteria to determine the tension for the system. Therefore, a train speed is restricted below 70% of wave propagation speed of it in European railway code. In this study, we measured a strain and uplift of contact wire while HEMU-430X tain is operated for the speed-up trial test in Kyungbu high-speed railway. The measured strain and uplift are analyzed with wave propagation speed according to the speed-up. The more a train speed reaches to a propagation speed, the more measured strain is high. Through the study, an experimental approach is performed about the code which a train speed is restricted below 70% of wave propagation speed of it.

  • Recently, as the high speed railway becomes more common, new environmental problems such as noise around tunnels are appearing. When a high speed train enters a tunnel, a compression wave in the tunnel is generated and propagated toward the tunnel exit at a sonic speed. When it reaches the tunnel exit, a part of compression wave radiates as a pulse typed impulse wave to the outside of tunnel. The impulse wave has an explosive noise. When the impulse wave is propagated around a village, it induces a serious noise or other problems to the resident. In order to solve these engineering problems, it is important to investigate the radiation characteristics of the impulse wave radiated from the tunnel exit. In this study, the effect of the length and angle of the baffle plate at the tunnel exit on the impulse wave radiated from the tunnel exit was investigated by numerical analysis. As a results, the baffle plate greatly affected the propagation of impulse wave.

  • With increasingly wide needs for a new energy source, many operation types of a wave-forced generation have been studied. To obtain an economically avaliable energy, it is imperative that the speed of the in put wave should be increased by a proper mechanism. In this study, we propose a new speed-increaser mechanism for the wave-force generation using a well-known Stephenson mechanism. In this paper, we have analysed kinematically the proposed speed-increasing mechanism. then a computer program based on the C++ language is developed to prove the validity of our mechanism and to simulate a wave-forced generation.

  • Mechanical properties of cancellous bone with a high porosity and cortical bone with a high fraction of solid are estimated by the measurement of ultrasonic wave propagation. The speed of sound (SOS) in ultrasonic waves is usually measured by two equations, bulk wave equation and bar wave equation. Bulk wave speed has almost same as the fast wave of Biot's theory. In this study, we examine whether the bulk wave speed is influenced by the anisotropy of bone matrix. The SOS when the bone matrix is isotropy is 0.69% faster than that when the bone matrix is transversely isotropy. We also examine if the use of bar equation is adequate for a cortical bone. In the previous paper, the bar wave speed is a function of Young's modulus or elastic coefficient tensor. In the same manner, the effect of bar wave speed to isotropic and anisotropic bone is estimated.

  • In order to investigate the compression wave propagating in a high-speed railway tunnel, a numerical calculation was applied to the wave phenomenon occurring in a model tunnel. Unsteady, one-dimensional inviscid or viscous flows were solved by an explicit TVD scheme, and the calculated flows were compared with the results of measurement in real tunnels. Tunnel noises caused by emission of the compression wave were characterized in terms of excess pressure of compression wave, pressure gradient in the wave front and width of the compression wave. Calculated attenuation, pressure gradient and width of compression wave with the propagating distance agreed with the results of measurement in the real tunnels. The results also show that tunnel noises are proportional to the train velocity entering the tunnel.

  • High-speed harmonic optical modulation-demodulation schemes are presented and a possibility of the schemes for applying to high-speed light wave transmission system is tested at microwave frequency range. An example of this concept is as follows : Light wave is modulated succeedingly through cascaded optical modulators by a sub-carrier to produce a modulated light wave at harmonic frequency which is higher than the feasible frequency of the individual modulators. For demodulation of the base-band signal, the high frequency optical sub-carrier is down-converted by the same kind of optical modulator with the same concept of harmonic modulation.

  • With the increasing concerns on noise and vibration in hydraulic fluid power systems, it is important to find better way to reduce noise and vibration. In this study, the authors survey former researches on hose(viscoelastic tube) modeling in advance. And a summary of several existing methods for measuring the speed of sound in the fluid in pipes is presented. Their basic principles, advantages and limitations are compared. And The authors suggest a far simple identification procedure to obtain wave speed in hose by just using an experimental pressure data for the object tube with hose. In the new procedure, flow in hose is basically modeled by transfer matrix method, and wave speed in hose is obtained as data in frequency series. The wave speed in hose as data in frequency series will be used to compute the pressure pulsation attenuation in hydraulic pipe systems. The computed results are compared with the experimental ones, and the validity of the new procedure to obtain wave speed in hose is confirmed

  • Flow phenomena such as the pressure transients Inside a high-speed railway tunnel and the Impulsive waves at the exit of the tunnel are closely associated with the characteristics of the entry compression wave, which is generated by a train entering the tunnel. Tunnel entrance hood may be an effective means for alleviating the Impulsive waves and pressure transients. The objective of the current work is to explore the effects of the train nose shape and the entrance hood on the characteristics of the entry compression wave. Numerical calculations using the method of characteristics were applied to one-dimensional, unsteady, compressible flow field with respect to high-speed railway/tunnel systems. Two types of the entrance hoods and various train nose shapes were employed to reveal their influences on the entry compression wave for a wide range of train speeds. The results showed that the entry compression wave length increases as the train nose becomes longer and the train speed becomes lower. The entry compression wave length in the tunnel with hood becomes longer than that of no hood. Maximum pressure gradient in the compression wavefront reduces by the entrance hood. The results of the current work provide useful data for the design of tunnel entrance hood.

  • A bar with periodically nonuniform material properties is selected as a one-dimensional model of a flat-panel speaker. This paper describes a theoretical approach to the bending waves propagating i n the nonuniform bar. The phase speed of the wave is obtained using perturbation techniques for small amplitude, sinusoidal modulation of the flexural rigidity and mass density. It is shown that the wave speed is decreased due to the nonuniformity of the material properties by the amount proportional to the square of the modulation amplitude. The resonance occurring when the wavelength is half of the period of the material properties is analyzed by the method of multiple scales. It is also shown that the wave speed at the resonance mode is decreased by the amount proportional to the modulation amplitude but the wave of this mode does not propagate far enough due to attenuation.

  • When a railway train enters a tunnel at high speed, a compression wave is formed in front of the train and propagates along the tunnel. The compression wave subsequently emerges from the exit of the tunnel, which causes an impulsive noise. In order to estimate the magnitudes of the noises and to effectively minimize them, the characteristics of the compression wave propagating in a tunnel must be understood. In the present paper, the experimental and analytical investigations on the attenuation and distortion of the propagating compression waves were carried out using a model tunnel. This facility is a kind of open-ended shock tube with a fast-opening gate valve instead of a general diaphragm. One-dimensional flow model employed in the present study could appropriately predict the strength of the compression wave, Mach number and flow velocity induced by the compression wave. The experimental results show that the strength of a compression wave decreases with the distance from the tunnel entrance. The decreasing rate of the wave strength and pressure gradient in the wave is strongly dependent on the strength of the initial compression wave at the tunnel entrance.
