Accurate estimation of irregular wave transformation when the waves propagate from deep water to shallow water region is very important for the design of coastal structures and establishing beach erosion control. In this study. the transformation of directional spectrum is tested numerically using a conservation equation for energy flux and. based upon the joint distribution of wave height. period and wave direction. shoaling effects are predicted in the shallow water region. The applicability of the proposed procedure is verified through comparison with field observation data.

Based on the linear potential theory with the side wall reflection. the directional spectrum waves are numerically simulated by a source distribution method and these together with long-crested irregular waves are also generated at the towing tank of Pusan National University by considering the transfer function of the wave maker obtained from the regular waves. In the numerical simulation, the characteristics of the directional spreading function are investigated by changing the breadth of the wave-maker unit. the width of the towing tank and the wave period. In the experimental generation, the statistical properties and the power spectrums of the long-crested irregular and directional waves are compared along the towing tank length. The directional spreading functions are also investigated at various positions in the tank.
This study aims to examine the distribution of heat waves and to understand its cause for 33 years$(1973\sim2005)$ from 60 weather stations in Korea. Heat wave is defined as a period of 3 or more days with a daily maximum temperature exceeds the 95th percentile. In the inland of Chungcheong region, the Chungcheong western costal region, the inland of Jeolla region, the inland of Gyeongsang region and the southern region of Jeju island, heat wave days appeared more than 160 days. In the middle region of eastern costal and the northern region of Jeju island, heat wave days were less than 110 days. In regions that were heavily influenced by southwesterly winds during the occurrence of heat waves, such as the inland of Chungcheong region, the Chungcheong western costal region, the inland of Jeolla region and the inland of Gyeongsang region, heat waves continued for the longer term.

Damage to high-rise buildings caused by earthquakes is less frequency due to small distribution of high-rise buildings and low transmissibility of seismic motion to high-rise buildings. However, demand for high-rise buildings is increasing for development of construction technology and efficient land use. In addition, if high-rise buildings are constructed on soft ground such as landfill, transmissibility of seismic motion due to long-periodization of seismic waves is likely to increase. Thus, with development of technology, buildings are required to expand range of seismic design such as safety for long-period seismic waves. Therefore, in this study, dynamic experiments were performed to evaluate response characteristics of high-rise buildings according to period characteristics of seismicwaves and time history analysis was performed to verify them.

In the present study, the wave hindcasting has been performed, and then the characteristics of storm waves at Gangnueng port was investigated, in which the high waves are observed. Comparing the numerical results with the wave measurements at Gangneung port, Niigata, and Hamada, there were good agreements between them. In particular, the Pearson correlation coefficients of significant wave heights and peak periods at Gangneung port were 0.92 and 0.72, respectively. Then the extreme wave analysis on the significant wave heights was carried out for the estimation of the frequency of storm waves. In this analysis, the storm waves over the threshold were fitted to GPD(Generalized Pareto Distribution). According to this analysis, the return period of the storm wave on February, 24, 2008, one of the large storm waves at Gangneung port, was 8.2 months. Among the computed significant wave heights larger than one-year wave, 58.3% of them were resulted from the storm, while the others were from the typhoon. Additionally, the regression analysis on the waves larger than one-month wave has been conducted, and then the relationship between the computed significant wave heights and the significant wave period, $T_{1/3}=7H_s^{0.25}$ was obtained.

In this study, the peak wave period Tp and mean wave period T02 and Tm-1, 0, which are major parameters for classifying ocean characteristics, were calculated using water surface elevation data observed from the second west coast oceanographic and meteorological observation tower. In addition, the ratio of abnormal data, correlation analysis, and optimal probability density function were estimated. In the case of Tp among the calculated representative periods, the proportion of abnormal data was 5.73% and 0.67% at each point, and T02 was 4.35% and 0.01%. Tm-1, 0 was found to be 2.82% and 0.03%. Meanwhile, as a result of analyzing the relationship between T02 and Tp, the relationship was calculated to be 0.53 and 0.63 for each point. The relationship between Tm-1, 0 and Tp was 1.15 and 1.32, respectively, and T02, Tm-1, 0 was 1.18 and 1.22. As a result of estimating the optimal probability density function of the calculated representative period, Tp followed the 'Log-normal' and 'Normal' distributions at each point, and T02 was 'Gamma', 'Normal' distribution and Tm-1, 0 showed that 'Log-normal' and 'Normal' distribution were dominant, respectively. It is decided that these results can be used as basic data for wave analysis conducted on the west coast.

In this study, we proposed a new-type of circular perforated caisson breakwater consisting of a bundle of latticed blocks that can be applied to a small port such as a fishing port, and numerically investigated the hydraulic characteristics of the breakwater. The numerical method used in this study is OLAFOAM which newly added wave generation module, porous media analysis module and reflected wave control module based on OpenFOAM that is open source CFD software published under the GPL license. To investigate the applicability of OLAFOAM, the variations of wave pressure acting on the three-dimensional slit caisson were compared to the previous experimental results under the regular wave conditions, and then the performance for irregular waves was examined from the reproducibility of the target irregular waves and frequency spectrum analysis. As a result, a series of numerical simulations for the new-type of circular perforated caisson breakwaters, which is similar to slit caisson breakwater, was carried out under the irregular wave actions. The hydraulic characteristics of the breakwater such as wave overtopping, reflection, and wave pressure distribution were carefully investigated respect to the significant wave height and period, the wave chamber width, and the interconnectivity between them. The numerical results revealed that the wave pressure acting on the new-type of circular perforated caisson breakwaters was considerably smaller than the result of the impermeable vertical wall computed by the Goda equation. Also, the reflection of the new-type caisson breakwater was similar to the variation range of the reflection coefficient of the existing slit caisson breakwater.
Probability distribution of the sea surface slope is estimated using sun glitter images derived from visible radiometer on Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS) and surface vector winds observed by spaceborne scatterometers. The brightness of the visible images is converted to the probability of wave surfaces which reflect the sunlight toward GMS in grids of 0.25 deg $\times$ 0.25 deg. Slope and azimuth angle required for the reflection of the sun's ray toward GMS are calculated for each grid from the geometry of GMS observation and location of the sun. The GMS images are then collocated with surface wind data observed by three scatterometers. Using the collocated data set of about 30 million points obtained in a period of 4 years from 1995 to 1999, probability distribution function of the surface slope is estimated as a function of wind speed and azimuth angle relative to the wind direction. Results are compared with those of Cox and Munk (1954a, b). Surface slope estimated by the present method shows narrower distribution and much less directivity relative to the wind direction than that reported by Cox and Munk. It is expected that their data were obtained under conditions of growing wind waves. In general, wind waves are not always developing, and slope distribution might differ from the results of Cox and Munk. Most of our data are obtained in the subtropical seas under clear-sky conditions. This difference of the conditions may be the reason for the difference of slope distribution.

Wave measurements using X-band radar have many advantages compared to other wave gauges including wave-rider buoy, P-u-v gauge and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), etc.. For example, radar system has no risk of loss/damage in bad weather conditions, low maintenance cost, and provides spatial distribution of waves from deep to shallow water. This paper presents new methods for estimating significant wave heights of X-band marine radar images using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). We compared the time series of estimated significant wave heights (Hs) using various estimation methods, such as signal-to-noise ratio (${\sqrt{SNR}}$), both and ${\sqrt{SNR}}$ the peak period (TP), and ANN with 3 parameters (${\sqrt{SNR}}$, TP, and Rval > k). The estimated significant wave heights of the X-band images were compared with wave measurement using ADCP(AWC: Acoustic Wave and Current Profiler) at Hujeong Beach, Uljin, Korea. Estimation of Hs using ANN with 3 parameters (${\sqrt{SNR}}$, TP, and Rval > k) yields best result.
