  • Offshore oscillating water columns (OWC) represent one of the most promising forms of wave energy converters. The hydrodynamic performance of such converters heavily depends on their interactions with ocean waves; therefore, understanding these interactions is essential. In this paper, a fully nonlinear 2D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on RANS equations and VOF surface capturing scheme is implemented to carry out wave energy balance analyses for an offshore OWC. The numerical model is well validated against published physical measurements including; chamber differential air pressure, chamber water level oscillation and vertical velocity, overall wave energy extraction efficiency, reflected and transmitted waves, velocity and vorticity fields (PIV measurements). Following the successful validation work, an extensive campaign of numerical tests is performed to quantify the relevance of three design parameters, namely incoming wavelength, wave height and turbine damping to the device hydrodynamic performance and wave energy conversion process. All of the three investigated parameters show important effects on the wave-pneumatic energy conversion chain. In addition, the flow field around the chamber's front wall indicates areas of energy losses by stronger vortices generation than the rear wall.

  • The paper involves the study on the elastic and elasto-plastic stress wave propagation in the 1-D and 2-D solid media. The Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics equations governing the elastic and elasto-plastic large deformation dynamic response of solid structures are presented. The proposed additional stress points are introduced in the formulation to mitigate the tensile instability inherent in the SPH approach. Both incremental rate approach and leap-frog algorithm for time integration are introduced and the new solution algorithm is developed and implemented. Two examples on stress wave propagation in aluminium bar and 2-D elasto-plastic steel plate are included. Results from the proposed SPH approach are compared with available analytical values and finite element solutions. The comparison illustrates that the stress wave propagation problems can be effectively solved by the proposed SPH method. The study shows that the SPH simulation is a reliable and robust tool and can be used with confidence to treat transient dynamics such as linear and non-linear transient stress wave propagation problems.

  • Wave breaking and breaking wave-induced hydrodynamics are very important subjects in the field of coastal and ocean hydrodynamics and engineering. In the coastal zone, a submerged breakwater has been increasingly popular, since it is one of nature-matching structures with multi- functions such as (1) wave energy dissipation by wave breaking and friction, (2) oxygen supply to sea by wave breaking and breaking wave, (3) water purification by entrained air bubbles, (4) keeping. good seascape. and (5) good habitat for sea livings. Recently, the breaking wave-induced high frequency pressure over a submerged breakwater is said to have a function of gathering sea livings around the structure, which has encouraged the construction of the submerged breakwater in coastal zone. • In this paper, wave breakers which occur in two dimensional coasts are simulated using a SPH(Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) method which represents the movement of fluidic physical volume with particles. As continuative fluid is approximated to the particles, the simulations are performed using fully Lagrangian method without any grid system. Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation are used for the numerical simulations. To generate incident waves, a piston type wavemaker is employed. The accuracy of the wave which is numerically generated by the wavemaker is verified by comparing with analytical results. The computations are carried out with various wave heights and slopes. The wave patterns generated through the numerical simulations are compared with several existing experimental and computational results. Agreement between the experimental data and the computation results is comparatively good. Also, the breaker depth index and the breaker height index from the present calculations are compared with the existing experimental results, and the tendency is very similar.

  • An attempt to improve the speed performance through the minimizing in wave resistance has been done by an application of gooseneck and no bulb type to bulbous bow for the DSME 78,500 Class LPG Carrier on the basis of the CFD calculation and comparatives model tests. The hydrodynamic characteristics according to the variation of the shape of Cp-curve, design load water line, frame line and bulbous bow that have an important effect on the wave resistance has been evaluated/calculated by ship-flow code. A wide variety in hull variation have been tried to have a good hull form with three types of fore-body hull forms mainly classified by the shape of bulbous bow. The speed performances for the three final hull forms with different bulbous bows have been evaluated through the model tests.

  • OWEC(Overtopping Wave Energy Converter)는 월파된 파도를 이용한 파력발전시스템이라한다.

  • The ship hydrodynamics in static and dynamic states were investigated using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. The static case simulated a fixed ship, while the dynamic case considered a ship with free sinkage and trim using the mesh morphing technique. High speed was found to increase the wave elevation around the ship. Compared with the static case, the dynamic case seemed to generate higher waves near the bow and after the stern. The frictional resistance was found be to more dominant. However, the pressure resistance became gradually important with the increase of the ship speed. The trim and sinkage were also analyzed to characterize the ship hydrodynamics in the dynamic state.

  • This study presents a new method to computes analytical fragility curves of a structure subject to tsunami waves. The method uses dynamic analysis at each stage of the computation. First, the smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model simulates the propagation of the tsunami waves from shallow water to their impact on the target structure. The advantage of SPH over mesh based methods is its capability to model wave surface interaction when large deformations are involved, such as the impact of water on a structure. Although SPH is computationally more expensive than mesh based method, nowadays the advent of parallel computing on general purpose graphic processing unit overcome this limitation. Then, the impact force is applied to a finite element model of the structure and its dynamic non-linear response is computed. When a data-set of tsunami waves is used analytical fragility curves can be computed. This study proves it is possible to obtain the response of a structure to a tsunami wave using state of the art dynamic models in every stage of the computation at an affordable cost.
