Ship Motion and Propulsive Performance of a Container Ship in Regular Head Waves (콘테이너선의 피랑중 운동성능 저항증가 및 추진성능에 관한 연구)

  • A series of model tests on a container ship in waves was executed at the Experimental Towing Tank of Ship Research Station, KIMM. This paper presents the results of resistance, self-propulsion, propeller open-water and ship motion tests in regular head waves. Firstly, the experimental results of ship motion measured on a towed model and a self-propelled model were compared with those of Japanese results showing fairly good agreements. Secondly, the results of resistance and propulsion tests were analyzed and the data of added resistance, thrust increase, torque increase, revolution increase and self-propulsion factors in waves were presented. Also the diffraction force measured on a fixed model in waves was analyzed. Finally, this report shows the propeller characteristics in calm water based on propeller immersion and in regular waves based on wave length.

  • We have developed a laser ultrasonic system for visualization of elastic waves propagating on a solid surface, in order to visualize ultrasonic waves propagating on opaque media. This system can produce a series of successive images as an animation of wave propagation, because of scanning an optical heterodyne probe to measure surface transient displacements. Using this visualization technique, we observed the scattering and diffraction of ultrasonic waves around various shapes of artificial defects, and examined its application to nondestructive inspection. This imaging system provides various kinds of visualization images such as propagation image, amplitude image, arrival time image and velocity image. 3-Dimensionally Integrated Planar Optics for 100 Gb/s Optical Packet Address Detection

  • We propose a novel planar optical interconnection scheme for 100 Gb/s optical packet address detection, which consists of waveguide grating couplers and a diffractive microlens integrated on a glass substrate 3-dimensionally. Length and duty cycle of the grating couplers have been determined on the bases of the ray-optic propagation-mode analysis in a slab waveguide and of the rigorous coupled-wave diffraction analysis for out-coupled radiation-modes. The 3-dimensionally integrated planar optics makes it possible to connect each address bit-signals of $TE_ 0-waveguide$ mode to the detector with a power uniformity of 6.4 % and a total coupling efficiency of 72.3 %.

  • As a shock impinges into a vortex of variable strength, complex shock diffraction can occur. Since a vortex has a fixed rotating direction, the shock wave travelling in one direction creates strong asymmetry in the vortex flow field. The process is that first the shock is divided into two parts by the vortex. One part is moving in the adverse direction opposite to the vortex flow which is captured by the vortex center. The other part is moving in the favorable direction, namely, in the direction same as the vortex flow; it is swung around the vortex, accelerating the vortex flow. In this paper we have investigated numerically using ENO scheme how and why the shock-vortex interaction patterns appear so different for different parametric values. Conclusion is that there are three different types of shock-vortex interaction depending on two related parameters: shock Mach number and vortex Mach number. We present a parameter map by which we can discern what type of interaction pattern appears as a shock impinges into a vortex.

  • In optical storage device system, there are several research topics to increase its recording density. The main idea is reducing wave length of laser diode and magnifying the number of numerical aperture (NA). In conventional optical system NA cannot be over the unity in the air because of its diffraction limit. But it is possible to overcome its limitation of unity in near field using Solid Immersion Lens. In this work, the mathematical Solid Immersion Lens (SIL) design process was illustrated by using near field theory. Also, numerical SIL design parameters were calculated by means of CODE V. Through the work, we propose the new type of SIL for high density optical recording systems.

  • Hydrodynamic analyses of classic and truss spar platforms for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) were performed in the frequency domain, by considering coupling effects of the structure and its mooring system. Based on the Morison equation and Diffraction theory, different wave loads over various frequency ranges and underlying hydrodynamic equations were calculated. Then, Response Amplitude Operators (RAOs) of 6 DOF motions were obtained through the coupled hydrodynamic frequency domain analysis of classic and truss spar-type FOWTs. Truss spar platform had better heave motion performance and less weight than classic spar, while the hydrostatic stability did not show much difference between the two spar platforms.

  • A rigorous formulation is suggested〔l,2,3〕 in solving the scattering of plane waves by a dielectric wedge. Correcting surface currents are expanded in a Neumann series of fractional orders to meet the edge condition of static limit〔4〕. For the better converging series, the modified Neumann series satisfying the static limit edge condition and the radiation condition are suggested here for the surface currents having two different wave numbers of air and dielectric〔4〕. This representation gives accurate solutions over the whole region including the grazing incidence of the plane waves upon the dielectric wedge of large permittivities.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present the potential of photovoltaic systems using holographic solar concentrators. A hologram used here focuses light, spectrally splits it and diverts unwanted infrared heat away from the solar cell. The output of the hologram appears as a perpendicular thin spectral line and is displaced to solar cells on both sides. To obtain optimum design conditions we used the coupled wave theory and the vector ray tracing method. The measured data showed that the diffraction efficiency was 75 % and the spectral bandwidth was 350 nm.

  • Geological events which are undetected by the surface geophysical or geological survey phase can cause many problems, especially when the tunnel is excavated by TBM. To detect the geological events ahead of tunnel face, a seismic method applied from VSP method is used. Generally uniaxial geophone has been used in surface seismic survey. But this time, triaxial geophone is used to reduce the noise of tunnel wave. DME(Dip moveout Enhancement) filter and diffraction stack method are used. Applying these techniques to the road tunnel in construction, it is proved that the geological events ahead of tunnel face is fairly well predicted. From the seismic trace, Vp and Vs which are related to the rock property can be also obtained. Rock property and proper support design can be dedced from these parameters.
