  • A modeling was performed to predict the groundwater recovery in the vicinity of the waterway tunnel area using a groundwater flow model MODFLOW. The model was calibrated to reproduce measured groundwater levels and observed flow rates into the tunnel prior to lining, and then used for flow simulation under transient condition. Model predictions under steady-state condition revealed that if tunnel conductance had been reduced by 25% to 90%, groundwater levels would recover between 8% and 72.4% of their initial levels and flow into the tunnel will decrease between 5.5% and 82.7%. In case of 75% tunnel condutance ruduction in transient simulation. most of wells were predicted to recover within 20 years or so. The complete recovery for the wells with the groundwater level over 70 m was found to be impossible. For the 90% tunnel conductance reduction, all wells were found to be recovered within 15 years.

  • This study investigates the seismic performance of the surge tank which is of the atmospheric type and constructed above the ground. For that purpose, three different numerical models of the surge tank have been taken into account. Two models are constructed to describe the surge tank with different support conditions: one is to model all supports as fixed, and the other is to use spring element for the rock conditions. The third model is constructed to describe not only the surge tank with spring element of the rocks but also the vertical waterway tunnel. Through the time-history analysis of the surge tank subjected to three artificially excited ground motions, it is demonstrated that there can be much difference between the three models of our interest according to the support conditions and inclusion of the vertical waterway tunnel. However, their seismic performances still remain below the safety criteria, i.e., dynamic allowable stress. Also, the numerical results let us know where the critical sections occur. These results could be used to develop the efficient seismic enhancement method for the surge tank.

  • Estimation of inflow rates into subsection of a tunnel is establishing the proposed grouting part, measuring the degree of grouting, and settling the dispute over deplrtion of groundwater which may be resulted from tunneling. A current meter was used to calculate inflow rates of groundwater to each subsection of the tunnel. The study area is composed of section 1 and 2 of Imha-Youngchun waterway trnnel which has 32.976km length, with each section having 3,745m and 4,079m, respectively. The depth from groung surface to tunnel ranges from 122.45m to 358.3m. Total inflow rates of groundwater into each section measured three times by the current meter, together with bottle and eye measurement, were compared with groundwater inflow rates of each section measured by datalogger. The calcuated inflow rates of the sections by bottle and eye measurement were 8.8%∼54.7% of inflow rate (averaging 27,4%), whwewas those by the current meter were 76.9%∼110.6%(averaging 92.9%). Therfore, the current meter is regarded as useful method to calculate groundwater inflow rates into subsections of a tunnel.

  • Recently, Busan-Geoje fixed Link Immersed Tunnel and the Tokyo Port Waterway 2 Submarine Tunnel have been constructing. Furthermore it was mentioned to construct an immersed tunnel from Korea to Japan. As a result, it is expected that the demand to use the immersed tunnel will be increased. However, if a fire occurs in the immersed tunnels, it will damage tunnel elements and not save human lives more seriously than normal tunnels on the ground because of the absence of exits as well as closing structure of the immersed tunnels. In fact, the fire accident in the Eurotunnel which connects between France and the Unite Kingdom through the immersed tunnel had occurred twice in 1996 and 2008, and the inner surface of the tunnel got damaged such as concrete popout and structural damage. As a result, not only economic injury but enormous expense to repair and reinforce the tunnel were derived because of the suspension of traffic after the fire happened. Now, from the examining and analyzing study on the fire resistance of immersed tunnels in developed countries and Busan-Geoje fixed Link Immersed Tunnel, we suggest the establishment method of fire resistance to insure the fire safety of immersed tunnel.

  • The main objective of this paper is finding the influence factors and their degree of importance to steel liner's safety by investigating and evaluating the buckling incidents of steel tunnel liner under external water pressure. The study was based on the detailed investigation to the design conditions and incident shapes at 2m diameter waterway tunnel with a partially buckled internal steel liner and concrete backfilled lining as the raw water transmission pipe line of regional water supply project. Appropriate buckling theory capable of applying this incident points was selected by referring the existing literature and compared with the results of investigation. Also, hydrogeological characteristics of this site on buckling pressure was evaluated. The result of this study was shown that both the hydrogeological characteristics of upper geologic layers and proper tunnel construction are important factors on buckling at steel liner, and hydraulic gradient level should be decided according to the hydrogeological characteristics. This incident case analysis on steel liner of pressurized waterway tunnel was expected to provide more information for realizing the problems and improvements at each design, construction and maintenance stages.

  • The tunnel excavations are used for construction of common utility tunnel, electric tunnel, communication line tunnel, water supply and public sewerage pile line in urban area. The trench cut methods were mainly used in the past, but now, tunneling method is more being used. The tunnel excavation method like as NATM, Messer-Shield, Semi-Shield Methods are being applied to small section tunnel in Korea. The actual construction results of seme-shield method are increasing due to simplified construction process and reduced noise and vibration. And also this method is being used frequently in waterway tunnel and construction of prevention flooding recently. The seme-shield method design guideline is absence except for electric line tunnel construction in Korea, because of the semi-shield method was developed in Europe and Japan. In the prescriptive design, engineer's subjects are tending to intervene, because of absence of standard and specification for details. Therefore, Design and Construction Problems of Semi-Shield Method were described and construction trouble was introduced for exam. These problem and construction troubles have to be examined thoroughly in advance.

  • To clarify the relationship between groundwater flow tate and statistical distribution of fractures in Youngchun waterway tunnel, the fracture characteristics and fractal dimensions of groundwater flow section were evaluated. The flow rate of 84,465m$^3$/day was identified in fault, accounting for about 70 percent of the total How rate. The flow rate of 36,525m$^3$/day was identified in joint, accounting for about 30 percent of the total flow rate. The flow late in the NATM section of sedimentary rocks increased with the fractal dimensions. The fractal dimensions determined in fault or fracture zones show more positive relation with the flow rate than those in joint developed zones.

  • In this study, a tunnel information database system was developed to optimize the process of assessing and analyzing geological information from the life cycle of tunnel construction. All data from every stage in tunnel construction can be put into the system and be utilized for the decision making. In the system, tunnel face mapping information can be managed by digital format which can be easily transformed into 3D visualization module and thus help analyzing geological discontinuities. The system was applied to waterway and road tunnel in domestic area to verify its effectiveness.
