  • The fault can be defined, in a geological context, as a rupture plane showing a significant displacement generated in the case that the local tectonic stress exceeds a threshold of rupture along a particular plane in a rock mass. The hydrogeological properties of this fault can be varied with the spatial distribution and the connectivity of void spaces in a fault. When the formation of fault includes the process of the creation and the destruction of void spaces, a complex relation between the displacement along the fault and the variation of void spaces. In this study, the variation of flow with the geometrical characteristics of the fault is simulated and analyzed by using the three-dimensional discrete fracture network model. Three different geometrical characteristics of the faults are considered in this study: 1) simple hydraulic conductive plane, 2) damaged zone, and 3) relay structure of faults.

  • This study was conducted out to evaluate the efficacy of insecticides, furadan (3%G), disyston(5%G), ortran (50%WP), pirimor (50%EC) and metasystox (25%EC) to the mulberry thrips(Pseudodendrothrips mori NIWA.) The comparisons between damaged by thrips and controlled leaves with the cocoon producion and the chemical contents in leaves were carried. The results were as follows; 1. Ortran, furadan and matasystox showed the good efficacy to control the thrips, especially the period of efficacy was the longest in ortran and furadan. 2. The cocoon yield increased in the controlled plot by 3.68kg/box and 5.15kg/10a more than in the damaged plot in autumn rearing season. 3. The content of total carbohydrate and water in mulberry leaves was clearly higher in the controlled plot than in the damaged plot. This may cause the earlier leave harding by damage in autumn.

  • The yeongok stream originates at the natural park, Mt. O-dae and flows to the East Sea of korea, normally maintaining I or II grade of water quality and its average water flux is 352,100 ㎥/d. However, the typhoon 'Rusa', which occured on 31 August 2002, changed its watercourse and configuration, and the ecosystem was deeply damaged. Moreover, the hydrological characteristics were once more transformed, and the ecosystem was secondarily damaged during repair-work of destroyed bridges and elevations. After the flood disaster, the species diversity diminished 17% for attached diatom and 44% for aquatic animals. However, the earth and sand, dug from river bed during intensive repair-work throughout the entire stream, made diversity drop to 32% for the diatom and the aquatic animals were wiped out. Especially, fishes were totally destroyed except for some species such as Moroco oxycephalus in the upper stream. The yeongok stream has little contamination source and short water residence time due to the short length and rapid slope, and consequently a temporary deterioration of water quality caused by repair-work may be rapidly recovered, but it needs a long time to restore the damaged ecosystem.

  • A high-yield Korean rice cultivar cv. Boramchan and Hanmaeum, and rice cultivar for use in staple cv. Hopum were prepared and investigated for their physiological characteristics. Water content, water holding capacity, amylose content, damaged starch content, particle size, and pasting properties of the rice flours were measured. Moisture content of the Boramchan and Hanmaeum, made under wet and dry milling conditions, were as follows: wet conditions (14.79% and 13.56% respectively) and dry conditions (7.98% and 7.14% respectively). Water holding capacity of the Boramchan and Hanmaeum made by wet milling condition was 236.67% and 231.35%, respectively. Water holding capacity of the samples made by dry milling condition showed a higher score compared with other samples. The amylose content of Hopum, Boramchan, and Hanmaeum made by dry milling condition were 19.12%, 19.55% and 19.59%, respectively. Damaged starch contents of the samples made by wet milling showed a lower score. Final viscosity of Hopum, Boramchan, and Hanmaeum made by wet milling condition was 2,604, 3,052, and 2,917 cp, respectively. In this study, the results indicated that the super-yield Korean rice flour made by wet milling condition tends to show a lower water holding capacity, damaged starch contents and particle size, as compared to controls. However, a setback of the super-yield Korean rice flour was a higher score as compared to the controls, regardless of the milling conditions.

  • pasting characteristics. Their water contents, water holding capacities, solubilities, swelling power, amylose contents, damaged starches, particle sizes and pasting characteristics were measured. The water content and water holding capacities of various types of rice flours collected in the market were 7.64-14.97% and 95.22-232.94%, respectively. Their solubilities and swelling power were 1.97-37.40% and 1.33-5.76, respectively. Various types of rice flour had 32.11-305.67 ${\mu}m$ particle sizes. Among the various types of rice flour collected in the market, the lowest starch damaged content was 3.17%. The peak viscosities of the samples were 17.74-295.95 RVA. Among the rice flours that were collected in the market, the lowest pasting temperature was $69.72^{\circ}C$. As a result, it was shown that rice flour types with high starch damage contents tend to have higher expressed water holding capacities. Moreover, the samples with lower particle sizes tended to have final viscosities, and pasting temperatures.

  • The purpose of this study was to elucidate protective effect of Fructus Schsandrae(FS) water extract against xanthine oxidase/hypoxanthine(XO/HX)-induced cardiotoxicity in myocardial cells this experiment was performed. Cardiotoxicity of XO/HX was examined by MTT(MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2.5,-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay. XO/HX induced the decrease of cell viability. Also XO/HX induced the increase of LDH activity and the decrease of beating rate on cultured myocardial cells in a dose-dependent manner. To investigate cardioprotective effect of FS water extract cultures were preincubated with FS water extract for 3 hours. Cultures were then exposed to XO/HX for 72 hours. FS water extract have an efficacy in decreaasing LDH activity and increasing heart beating rate on cultured myocardial cells damaged by XO/HX. From the results it is suggested that XO/HX may show toxic effect in cultured myocardial cells derived from neonatal mouse and FS water extract is effective in the prevention of XO/HX-induced cardiotoxicity.

  • The mechanical integrity of generator stator windings is one of the critical point because the electric power is generated and conducted to power system through these windings. To cool down the heat emitted from generator winding during its operation, a majority of generators use de-mineralized water characterized by high cooling efficiency. Contrary to such the excellent cooling efficiency, however, the damaged bar insulations attributed to the absorption of cooling water in the generator stator winding lead to highly time- and cost consuming efforts as well as to service deterioration due to unexpected forced outage of generator. It is described that the new design of water absorption sensor using cross capacitance for generator in power plant in order to increase the reliability of water absorption diagnostics for generator stator bar insulation.

  • Due to the fast industrial growth and unplanned urban underground development in Korea, systematic management for water lines could not be accomplished. Unsystematic water line management has resulted in difficulty in finding the exact location and the age of the lines, which has the potential of leading to a disastrous situation. The objective of this study is a development of safety management system for water lines using GIS. This system is constructed to easily estimate water line deterioration by the geographic output system on it, search for damaged objectives near the surrounding area in a situation of destruction, and offer the emergency information by which one can quickly take action. Also, it is constructed to prevent accidents from occurring during work by presenting underground utilities and states of work.
