The amount of the heating and cooling energy of water source heat pump using the raw water from the Paldang water intake station is investigated in the study. The Han river water is conveyed in the large-size shallowly buried pipe. Averaged water temperature at the position, 27 km from the Paldang water intake station, is increased by $1.11^{\circ}C$ due to the geothermal energy transfer under the ground, therefore the raw water has more thermal energy than the river water. To estimate of the thermal energy for the raw water, it is assumed that the water source heat pump is used for the heating and cooling ventilation. When $5.0^{\circ}C$ temperature difference energy of the raw water is used in the heat pump system all the year except for the January and February in which $3.0^{\circ}C$ temperature difference energy is used. It is predicted that total 5,766.3 Tcal could be used in the metropolitan area a year, which is about 3.0% of the river water unutilized energy resources.
In this paper, an experiment was carried out to investigate the thermal behavior and performance on a solar space heating & hot water system in an apartment. Measurement was continued for 6 months between January 1st 2004 and June 31th 2004. The results show that there is no problem in control and operation in case of connection this system with conventional space heating and hot water system, and that the thermal performance of this system and indoor thermal environment is good.
The concept of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is simple and various types of OTEC have been proposed and tried. However the location of OTEC is limited because OTEC requires $20^{\circ}C$ of temperature difference as a minimum, so most of OTEC plants were constructed and experimented in tropical oceans. To solve this we proposed the modified OTEC which uses condenser discharged thermal energy of existing fossil or nuclear power plants. We call this system CTEC (Condenser Thermal Energy Conversion) as this system directly uses $32^{\circ}C$ partially saturated steam in condenser instead of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ surface sea water as heat source. Increased temperature difference can improve thermal efficiency of Rankine cycle, but CTEC should be located near existing plant condenser and the length of cold water pipe between CTEC and deep cold sea water also increase. So friction loss also increases. Calculated result shows the change of efficiency, pumping power, net power and other parameters of modeled 7.9 MW CTEC at given condition. The calculated efficiency of CTEC is little larger than that of typical OTEC as expected. By proper location and optimization, CTEC could be considered another competitive renewable energy system.
Cooling seawater of thermal power plant which amounts about 5 cms per 100 MWe has hydro energy of about 3,000 kW at the thermal power plant complex, but this useful hydro energy has not been developed. Therefore, the feasibility study on hydro energy development of three power plants located in the southern and western coast of Korea was performed. Three target power plants are Samcheonpo, Boryeong and Hadong thermal power plant. The design head to discharge cooling water by gravity and the head caused by tidal level in the southwestern coastal area, could be used for the production of electric power. The various alternatives were studied and technical feasibility and economical efficiency were clearly proved.
As an early stage in the development of a water calorimeter, this study established a computer simulation methodology for analyzing the thermal behavior of a water calorimeter based on radiation transport and energy deposition. As a result, this study developed a method wherein the energy deposition distribution, which is obtained by applying Monte Carlo methods in water calorimeters, is directly used as a heat source for the thermal analysis model. Based on the proposed method, heat transfer in a water vessel and the effect of thermistor self-heating were analyzed. Through an analysis of the water velocities with and without a water vessel, it was found that a water vessel can serve as a convection barrier. Furthermore, it was confirmed that when considering thermistor self-heating, the water temperature change at the thermistor location is 0.219 mK higher compared to that when the thermistor was not considered. Therefore, thermistor self-heating must be considered to analyze the thermal behavior of a water calorimeter more accurately.
Nanofluids are advanced concept fluid that solid particles of nanometer size are stably dispersed in fluid likes water, ethylene glycol and others. They have higher thermal conductivities than base fluids. If using this characteristic, efficiencies of heat exchangers can be increased. Therefore in this study, we measured thermal conductivity and viscosity of carbon nanofluids. They were made to ultra sonic dispersed oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes(OMWCNTs) in distilled water and ethanol, respectively. The mixture ratios of OMWCNTs were from 0.0005 vol% ~ 0.1 vol%. Thermal conductivity and viscosity was measured by transient hot-wire method and rotational viscometer. The results of an experiment are as in the following: thermal conductivity of the 0.1 vol% pure-water nanofluid improved 7.98% ($10^{\circ}C$), 8.34% ($25^{\circ}C$), and 9.14% ($70^{\circ}C$), and its viscosity increased by 37.08% ($10^{\circ}C$), 33.96% ($25^{\circ}C$) and 21.64% ($70^{\circ}C$) than the base fluids. Thermal conductivity of the 0.1 vol% ethanol nanofluids improved 33.72% ($10^{\circ}C$), 33.14% ($25^{\circ}C$), and 32.25% ($70^{\circ}C$), and its viscosity increased by 35.12% ($10^{\circ}C$), 32.01% ($25^{\circ}C$) and 19.12% ($70^{\circ}C$) than the base fluids.
This study is conducted to improve the efficiency of a thermal storage tank. The thermal storage tank was designed to store heat energy that obtained from the solar or the others heat sources. However, it has difficulties in storing heat with nonuniform temperature through the entire tank with respect to the vertical direction, This study is focused on the thermal stratification to improve thermal comfort for the resident in house. To enhance temperature stratification of the tank, a distributor was designed and installed in the middle of the storage tank vertically. The vertically designed distributor could supply the return water with stratified temperature in the storage tank with respect to the height. The water velocity from the distributor hole is the same with the other outlet in the distributor. However, gravity effect on the flow in the storage tank is much higher than that of the velocity effect due to that Froude Number is less than 1. During the heat charging process in the storage tank, temperature maintained with little difference with respect to the height. However the charging process takes long time to get a effective temperature for the heating or hot water supply because of all of water in the storage tank needs to be heated.

The most numerical investigations of the thermal-hydraulic phenomena following the loss of the residual heat removal capability during the mid-loop operation of the pressurized water reactor were performed according to simplifications and are not sufficiently accurate. To perform more accurate and more reliable predictions of thermal-hydraulic accidents in a nuclear power plant using computational fluid dynamics codes, a more detailed methodology is needed. Modelling results identified that thermal stratification and natural convection are observed. Temperatures of lower monitoring points remain low, while temperatures of upper monitoring points increase over time. The water in the heated region, in the upper unheated region and the pipe region was well mixed due to natural convection, meanwhile, there is no natural convection in the lower unheated region. Water temperature in the pipe region increased after a certain time delay due to circulation of flow induced by natural convection in the heated and upper unheated regions. The modelling results correspond to the experimental data. The developed computational fluid dynamics methodology could be applied for modelling of two-component single/two-phase natural convection and thermal stratification phenomena during the mid-loop operation of the pressurized water reactor or other nuclear and non-nuclear installations at similar conditions.
This paper proposes the design and implementation of fluid flow generation system by using polypropylene(PP) water capture, which harvests electric energy from the kinetic energy of tidal current or water flow and drives the desired load, and applies it to the discharge drain of Hadong thermal power plant. This experimental system is composed of water captures, driving wheel, gear trains, 10[kW] synchronous generator, and three phase rectifying circuit which drives lamp load for test. The proposed water capturing system which is composed of water captures, rope and driving wheel, rotates as caterpillar according to water flow. This system is very easy to manufacture and more economical than another type of tidal current turbines such as conventional propeller and helical type. Also, we estimated the available fluid flow energy that can be extracted from the cooling water in discharge drain based on drain's cross-sectional area. Therefore, this paper confirms the validity of proposed fluid flow generation system with water captures and the possibility of its application for renewable energy generation in discharge drain of thermal power plant, from the obtained performance characteristic of this energy conversion system.
With increment on interesting about improving renewable energy efficiency, many research have been conducted and the research about hybrid air-water heater using solar energy that can make heating air and hot water has been conducted also. In this experiment, the temperature difference and thermal efficiency were investigated when two heating medium(air and liquid) was working simultaneously. As a result, thermal efficiency showed 44% to 88% when these heating medium was working simultaneously depending on operation condition and it is better than traditional solar collector. Also possibility of application into building equipment also was confirmed based on temperature and thermal efficiency. But necessity of additional studies about proper operation condition according to purpose of use and heat load was confirmed because change of thermal efficiency by air velocity and flux of liquid was shown a huge difference.
