Water swelling behaviors of SBR vulcanizates with different reinforcing systems of carbon black, silica without a coupling agent, and silica containing a coupling agent were studied. Distilled water and 3.5% NaCl solution were used as swelling media. The water swelling ratios in the distilled water were higher than those in the salt solution. The water swelling ratios of the carbon black-filled samples were lower than those of the silica-filled ones. For the silica-filled SBR vulcanizates, the specimens without the silane coupling agent had higher water swelling ratios than those containing it. Water swelling behaviors of SBR composites with different 1,2-unit contents were also compared. The water swelling ratios tended to decrease by increasing the 1,2-unit content.
Research in this paper focuses on the kinetic evaluation of swelling of the liquid crystalline phases of glyceryl monooleate (GMO). Swelling of the lamellar and cubic liquid crystalline phases of GMO was studied using two in vitro methods, a total immersion method and a Franz cell method. The swelling of the lamellar phase and GMO having 0 %w/w initial water content was temperature dependent. The swelling ratio was greater at $20^{\circ}^C than 37^{\circ}^C$ . The water uptake increased dramatically with decreasing initial water content of the liquid crystalline phases. The swelling rates obtained using the Franz cell method with a moist nylon membrane to mimic buccal drug delivery situation were slower than the total immersion method. The swelling was studied by employing first-order and second-order swelling kinetics. The swelling of the liquid crystalline phases of GMO could be described by second-order swelling kinetics. The initial stage of the swelling (t < 4 h) followed the square root of time relationship, indicating that this model is also suitable for describing the water uptake by the liquid crystalline matrices. These results obtained from the current study demonstrate that the swelling strongly depends on temperature, the initial water content of the liquid crystalline phases and the methodology employed for measuring the swelling of GMO.
The swelling pressure of a potential buffer material was measured and the effect of dry density, bentonite content and initial water content on the swelling pressure was investigated to provide the information for the selection of buffer material in a high-level waste repository. Swelling tests were carried out according to Box-Behnken's experimental design. Measured swelling pressures were in the wide range of 0.7 Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 190.2 Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ under given experimental conditions. Based upon the experimental data, a 3-factor polynomial swelling model was suggested to analyze the effect of dry density, bentonite content and initial water content on the swelling pressure The swelling pressure increased with an increase in the dry density and bentonite content, while it decreased with increasing the initial water content and, beyond about 12 wt.% of the initial water content, levelled off to nearly constant value.

Effects of beating and water immersion time on fiber swelling and paper properties were elucidated for the fundamental study of producing high bulk paper. Chemical pulps were beaten for various freeness and the beaten pulp was immersed in water up to 24 hours. Fiber swelling was evaluated by measuring water retention value (WRV). It was found that fiber swelling, bulk and paper strength were quickly changed at the initial stage of beating. Immersion in water did not significantly increase WRV, paper density and strength, implying that soaking in water alone could not effectively swell fiber wall. In order to swell further, hydrogen bonds between fibrils in fiber wall and hence fiber wall structure shall be broken by mechanical force during beating.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the water absorption and thickness swelling of biocomposites at room temperature. These properties of bio-composites mainly depend on the ability of the agro-flour to absorb water through hydrogen bonding between water and the hydroxyl groups of the holocellulose and lignin in the cell wall. As the content of agro-flour increased, the water absorption and thickness swelling of the bio-composites increased. The effects of agro-flour content and rice husk flour (RHF) particle size on the water absorption and thickness swelling of the bio-composites were evaluated. In general, wood-based materials showed significantly higher water absorption and thickness swelling than the bio-composites. This might be attributed to the ability of the polybutylene succinate (PBS) hydrophobic polymer to prohibit the water absorption and thickness swelling of the bio-composites, Therefore, the use of agro-flour filled PBS bio-composites, which exhibit improved dimensional stability in comparison with wood-based materials, is recommended.
This paper describes the results of study on major factors influencing time-dependent deformation behaviour of swelling shales. The study was carried out by analyzing all the swell test results available for shales from southern Ontario. Major factors studied are (1) the presence of ambient water, (2) calcite content and (3) the applied stress. The results of the study on seven shales show that the swelling of shale is associated with the formation of cracks and the absorption of water in these cracks. The magnitude of swelling potential is related linearly to the amount of absorbed water. The presence of calcite inhibits the swelling of shales studied, reducing the swelling to zero at about 30% of calcite content. All the shales studied exhibit the stress-dependent swelling behaviour, though there Is a difference in the degree of dependency.
The changes of water absorption and surface area of polydimethylsiloxane-5-fluorouracil devices containing different water soluble additives such as sodium chloride, glycerine, poly-propylene glycol(PPG 400), and polyethylene oxide(PEO 400, 400 and 2000) were investigated. It was confirmed that carriers controlled water absorption and swelling of the devices in the aqueous solutions. The water absorption and the swelling were affected by the osmotic pressure and ionic strength of the aqueous solutions.
There have been many efforts to use anionic hydrogels as oral protein delivery carriers due to their pH-responsive swelling behavior. The dynamic swelling behavior of poly(methacrylic acid-co-methacryloxyethyl glucoside) [P(MAA-co-MEG)] hydrogels was investigated to determine the mechanism of water transport through these anionic hydrogels. The exponential relation $M_t/M_{\infty}=kt^n$ was used to calculate the exponent, n, describing the Fickian or non-Fickian behavior of swelling polymer networks. The mechanism of water transport through these gels was significantly affected by the pH of the swelling medium. The mechanism of water transport became more relaxation-controlled in the swelling medium of pH 7.0 that was higher than the $pK_a$ of the gels. Experimental results of time-dependent swelling behavior of the gels were analyzed with several mathematical models. Using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, the effect of ionization of the carboxylic acid groups in the polymer networks on the water transport mechanism was investigated.

Recently Bentonite mat is applied various structure : External waterproofing for underground structure, A reclaimed land, Artificial lake, Large-scaled civil structure, etc. With these various structure environment, water quality for application of Bentonite Mat affects watertightness. Specially spot with a large quantity of Chloride ion like salt water, degree of watertightness revelation is evaluated and applied. In this study, it is a main goal to investigate watertightness of Bentonite Mat with distilled water and salt water dissolved chloride ion Contents 0.88%. The result of this paper is as follows. 1) Water permeability coefficient of Bentonite Mat : distilled water(1.21$\times$10$^{-9}$cm/sec), salt water(3.12$\times$10$^{-7}$cm/sec). 2) Variation of thickness : distilled water(187%), salt water(108%). 3) Swelling ratio : distilled water(1500%), salt water(350%).
