To understand the thermoresponsive volume phase transition of an N-isopropyl acrylamide(NIPA) gel on water, the solubility parameter of neutral NIPA gel was determined by swelling the gel with various solvents. Water was found not to be a good solvent for NIPA gel. Equilibrium swelling curves of NIPA gel were respectively obtained by immersing in pure water, ethanol, n-propanol and some mixed solvents. On adding a small amount of alcohols to water, volume phase transition of NIPA gel in water was changed. Phase transition temperature of this gel was decreased with the increase of the carbon number of alcohol.
PP hollow fiber membrane was hydrophilized by EVOH dip coating followed by low temperature plasma treatment and UV irradiation. EVOH coating attained high water flux without any prewetting but its stability did not guaranteed at high water permeation rate. At high water permeation rate, water flux declined gradually due to swelling and delamination of the EVOH coating layer causing pore blocking effect. However, plasma treatment reduces the swelling, which suppress delamination of the EVOH coating layer from PP support result in relieving the flux decline. Also, UV irradiation helped the crosslinking of the EVOH coating layer to enhance the performance at low water permeation rate. FT-IR and ESCA analyses reveal that EVOH dip coating performed homogeneously through not only membrane surface but also matrix. Thermogram of EVOH film modified plasma treatment and W irradiation show that crosslinking density of EVOH layer increased. Chemical modification by plasma treatment and UV irradiation stabilized the hydrophilic coating layer to increase the critical flux of the submerged membrane.
The removal of trace chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons from water by a pervaporation technique has been carried out through poly (dimethylsiloxane) membrane which had been fabricated by the addition crosslinking reaction. This study dealt with the swelling and permeation behaviors of the PDMS membranes with dichloroethane trichloroethane and toluene aqueous solutions. The swelling ratio in the toluene aqueous solution was much higher than those in the chloroethane solutions at all of the operating temperatures and concentrations. The solubility parameter theory was introduced to interpret the affinity between permeates and a membrane material and in all cases this approach seemed to be proper. It was suggested that the existence of water clusters in the membrane due to the hydrophobic characteristics of the membrane made the size of the permeating water larger resulting in suppressing water permeation and increasing enrichment of the organic components. The permeation behaviors at different membrane thicknesses were indirectly interpreted in terms of the effect of concentration polarization.
In this study, free swell index of betonite was examined in several regeants; distilled water, leachate, seawater and 3% NaCl solution. Free swell index values of bontonite to be added Poly(acrlylic acid), PYA(Polyvinyl Alcohol) or SCMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose) were evaluated and compared. From this, it was confirmed that hydraulic conductivities of GCL in seawater were examined and the hydraulic conductivities of GCL in seawater were compared to those in distilled water. The average values of free swell indices of bentonite were decreased in order of distilled water>leachate>seawater. It was shown that no significant differences were occurred for free swell index between seawater and 3% NaCl solution. For bentonite to be added PVA, the other reagents except distilled water didn't affect increase of swelling. Swelling properties of bentonite to be added SCMC were improved except 3% NaCl solution.

We polymerized material of AA(Acrylic acid) and BMA(butyl methacrylate) to make up for the weak points of hydrogel contact lens. The synthesis process of silicone synthesis is as follows. Acrylate-PDMS(Polydimethylsiloxane)-Urethane prepolymer was composed after Diisocynate reacted with HEMA(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) under the catalyst and it reacted again with bis(hydroxyalkyl) terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) with high oxygen transmissibility characteristics. HEMA(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) was used to make prepolymer that can be polymerized and the urethane was used to improve elasticity and oxygen transmissibility, copolymerization was performed with conventional hydrogel contact lens materials to make silicone hydrogel contact lens with higher oxygen transmissibility. For manufacturing of contact lens, We added BMA(Butyl methacrylate) with better elasticity and flexibility, and AA(Acrylic acid) with higher moisturizing to used contact lens materials. AIBN (Azobis2-methylpropionitrile) as initiator and EGDMA(Ethylene Glycol Dimethacrylat) as crosslinking agent were used and the lens with higher oxygen transmissibility and better moisturizing were manufactured complying with basic contact lens properties, which have several combination trial of each monomer characteristics. Compounding SN which included SILICONE, HEMA, NVP and EGDMA etc was showed by swelling ratio of 9.38% and water content of 23.7%. SN was showed by swelling ratio of 9.38%, water content of 23.7% and a visible ray transmissibility of 89%. SB which added BMA in the SN was showed by swelling ratio of 12.50%, water content of 18.56% and a visible ray transmissibility of 88%. SAB which added both AA and BMA in the SN was showed by swelling ratio of 8.33%, water content of 12.93% and a visible ray transmissibility of 88%.
A self-oscillating interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) poly(acrylic acid)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PAA/PEG) hydrogel was prepared by using radical polymerization with a two-step method. The IPN hydrogel was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and morphological analysis. The results indicated that the chains of PEG and PAA twined to form porous structure which is beneficial to water molecules entering inside of the hydrogel. In addition, the pH-responsive behavior, salt sensitivity, swelling/de-swelling oscillatory behaviors and self-oscillation in a closed pH oscillator were also studied. The results showed that the prepared hydrogel exhibited pH-sensitivity, good swelling/de-swelling reversibility and excellent salt sensitivity. The self-oscillating behavior of swelling/de-swelling for the prepared hydrogel was caused by pH alteration coupled with the external media. This study may create a new possibility as biomaterial including new self-walking actuators and other related devices.
A novel, polysaccharide-based, superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized through crosslinking graft copolymerization of methacrylic acid (MAA) onto kappa-carrageenan ($_{k}C$), using ammonium persulfate (APS) as a free radical initiator in the presence of methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. A proposed mechanism for $_{k}C$g-polymethacrylic acid ($_{k}C$-g-PMAA) formation was suggested and the hydrogel structure was confirmed using FTIR spectroscopy. The effect of grafting variables, including MBA, MAA, and APS concentration, was systematically optimized to achieve a hydrogel with the maximum possible swelling capacity. The swelling kinetics in distilled water and various salt solutions were preliminarily investigated. Absorbency in aqueous salt solutions of lithium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and aluminum chloride indicated that the swelling capacity decreased with increased ionic strength of the swelling medium. This behavior can be attributed to the charge screening effect for monovalent cations, as well as ionic crosslinking for multivalent cations. The swelling of super absorbing hydrogels was measured in solutions with pH ranging from 1 to 13. In addition, the pH reversibility and on-off switching behavior, at pH levels of 3.0 and 8.0, give the synthesized hydrogels great potential as an excellent candidate for the controlled delivery of bioactive agents.
In this work, carboxymethylcellulose-based composite superabsorbent hydrogels were prepared by electron beam radiation. The composition of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) varied from 4 wt%, 5 wt%, and 6 wt% to 7 wt% based on the amount of distilled water in the syntheses of hydrogels. Graphite oxide, reduced graphene oxide, activated carbon, and bentonite were used as additives for the synthesis of composite superabsorbent. The effect of CMC composition and the type of additives on the gel properties of the prepared hydrogels was investigated. In order to verify the functional groups in the prepared materials, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used. In addition, mechanical strength, gel fraction, swelling kinetics, and equilibrium swelling ratios were measured for the prepared hydrogels. Swelling experiments were carried out in distilled water, urea solution, and physiological saline water. Prepared hydrogels were reused for 5 times, and gel fraction and swelling ratio were measured at every 24 hours. Among the prepared hydrogels, $C_{5%}GO$ and $C_{5%}rGO$ exhibited excellent mechanical property and relatively high swelling ratios for urea solution and physiological saline water with promising applicability as slow-release fertilizers.
In this study, sawdust boards with a density 0.6g/$cm^2$, powder phenol resin containing 10% were made from thinned logs of Pinus densiflora, Larix leptolepis and Pinus koraiensis. Four levels of the pressure and press time were designed to investigate the effect on the properties of sawdust boards. Thickness swelling and water absorption were increased as press time was decreased. The condition of 3-stage pressure for lower thickness swelling and water absorption of board was 40$\rightarrow$30$\rightarrow$20kgf/$cm^2$. Bending strength and brinell hardness were decreased as press time was decreased. But there have no change with pressing pressure. These results indicated that properties of sawdust board were affected by press time.
This study was carried out to discuss the feasibility of wood and plastic wastes as the raw materials for wood particle-plastic composites. For this purpose, composites were manufactured from coarse and fine wood particles and polypropylene fibers by nonwoven web process. And the effect of wood particle size on the performance of the composites were analyzed according to ASTM D 1037-93. In the physical properties of composites, water absorption decreased with the increase of target density and polypropylene fiber content. And the composites with fine wood particles appeared to have slightly lower water absorption than those with coarse wood particles. Thickness swelling did not vary significantly with the increase of target density but increased with the increase of wood particle content. And the composites with fine wood particles were significantly lower in thickness swelling than those with coarse wood particles. In the mechanical properties of composites, dry and wet MOR showed the increasing tendency with the increase of polypropylene fiber content and target density. Dry and wet MOE showed the increasing tendency with the increase of target density but only wet MOE exhibited the increasing tendency with the increase of polypropylene fiber content. Composites with fine wood particles appeared to be generally higher in wet MOR and MOE than those with coarse wood particles. In conclusion, composites with fine wood particles showed generally higher performance than those with coarse ones. Also, composites were significantly superior to control particleboards in the performance, especially in water absorption and thickness swelling.
