Due to their slow degradation properties, hydrophobic organic contaminants in estuarine sediment have been a concern for risks to human health and aquatic organisms. Studies of fate and transport of these contaminants in estuaries are further complicated by the fact that hydrodynamics and sediment transport processes in these regions are complex, involving processes with various temporal and spatial scales. In order to simulate and quantify long-term attenuation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) in the Elizabeth River, VA, we develop a modeling approach, which employs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's water quality model, WASP, and encompasses key physical and chemical processes that govern long-term fate and transport of PAHs in the river. In this box-model configuration, freshwater inflows mix with ocean saline water and tidally averaged dispersion coefficients are obtained by calibration using measured salinity data. Sediment core field data is used to estimate the net deposition/erosion rate, treating only either the gross resuspension or deposition rate as the calibration parameter. Once calibrated, the model simulates fate and transport PAHs following the loading input to the river in 1967, nearly 4 decades ago. Sediment PAH concentrations are simulated over 1967-2022 and model results for Year 2002 are compared with field data measured at various locations of the river during that year. Sediment concentrations for Year 2012 and 2022 are also projected for various remedial actions. Since all the model parameters are based on empirical field data, model predictions should reflect responses based on the assumptions that have been governing the fate and sediment transport for the past decades.
In drying process, to minimize the quality degradation by improved drying process and pretreatment methods, carrots, cabbages and radishes were dried and rehydrated. Physico-chemical properties of product were analyzed to determine the optimum pretreatment method and drying models were applied to explain drying mechanisms. Microwave, steam and water were used prior to drying as blanching method. In consideration of physical properties, optimum treatment time was decided that microwave was 1 min, steam and water were each 10 min. Control, steam, water, microwave and osmotic dehydration were treated prior to drying as pretreatment individually, osmotic dehydration was lower than the other treatmemt in drying efficiency, but carotene content was higher than the others. The effect continued after rehydration. Ten panelists tested dried and rehydrated carrots. After rehydration, the quality of air dried product with osmotic dehydration was superior to freeze dried without treatment. The fittness of drying models were conducted in order to explain the mechanism of drying each process. Quadratic model was most fittable to explain during drying. However, in rehydration process, no fittable model was found.

In this study, the various performance of dry cement mortar for Korean floor heating system depending on water-to-dry mortar ratios (W/DM) applied in project site was evaluated. According to the experiment conducted, the importance of mixing water for dry cement mortar was revealed by resultant performance or quality of the dry cement mortar for floor finishing by changing W/DM controlled in project site by workers. As the general trend, the flow was increased, and the unit volume weight was decreased with increasing W/DM. Additionally, compressive strength and drying shrinkage were significantly influenced by W/DM. Hence, it can be stated that the adding water for dry cement mortar should be managed precisely since excessively increased W/DM for workability improvement can cause performance degradation of floor mortar with the failures such as excessive bleeding, and severe segregation during the fresh state. As a summary of the study, to achieve a desirable performance of dry cement mortar, approximately 20 % of W/DM can be suggested to be managed in project site.

This study has performed comparative analysis on characteristics of contaminated 35 tributaries on seasonal variation/point discharge load/pollutant distribution of water quality factors(8) in order to understand the effect of the watershed in Nakdong River Basin. As a results, the water quality of $BOD_5$(Biochemical Oxygen Demand), Chl-a(Chlorophyll a) and Fecal E. Coli shows II grade at tributaries of more than 50% without COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand), TP(Total Phosphate), TOC(Total Oxygen Carbon) and TN(Total Nitrogen) factors. The specific discharge(Q) were occupied about 54.4% (19 sites) as $0.05m^3/sec/km^2$ value. Among these results, the contaminant level of Dalseocheon, Hyeonjicheon, Seokkyocheon 1, Uriyeongcheon and Dasancheon was also high, which has to consider a discharged pollutant load(kg/day). The 35 major tributaries of Nakdong River were included in 7 mid-watershed, such as Nakdong Waegwan, Geumho River, Nakdong Goryung, Nakdong Changnyung, Nam River, Nakdong Milyang, Nakdong River Hagueon. Especially, the discharged pollutant load of Nam River and Geumho River also was high according to the amount of discharge such as Kachang dam, Gongsan dam and Nam river dam. Seasonal difference of the water quality factors such as $BOD_5$, TN, SS and Q was observed largely, on the other hand the TP and Chl-a was not. This is guessed due to the precipitation effect of site, biological and physicochemical degradation properties of pollutant and etc. The co-relationship between the seasonal difference and water quality factors was observed using a Pearson correlation coefficients. Besides, the Multiple Regression analysis using a Stepwise Regression method was conducted to understand the effect between seasonal difference and water quality factors/regression equations. As a result, the Multiple Regression analysis was adapted in the spring, summer and autumn without the winter, which was observed high at spring, summer and autumn in the order COD/TP, Chl-a/TOC, TOC/COD/$BOD_5$ water quality factors, respectively.
Neoagaro-oligosaccharides are produced only by enzymatic degradation of agarose by ${\beta}-agarase.^{1)}$ Neoagaro-oligosaccharides inhibit the growth of bacteria, slow the rate of degradation of starch, are used as low-calorie additives to improve food quality, and have macrophage-stimulating activity. Furthermore, neoagarobiose is a rare reagent that has both moisturizing effect on skin and whitening effect on melanoma $cells.^{2)}$ An agar-degrading marine bacterium was isolated from the sea water at the northeast coast in Cheju island, Korea. The strain was gram negative, aerobic, and motile rod. The 16S rRNA of the strain had the closest match of 98% homology, with that from Agarivorans albus. On the basis of several phenotypic characters and a phylogenetic analysis, this strain was designated Agarivorans sp. JA-1. In solid agar plate, Agarivorans sp. JA-1 produced a diffusible agarase that caused agar softening around the colonies. Agarivorans sp. JA-1 was cultured for 36 hr in marine broth 2216 (Difco, USA) and the supernatant that containing an extracellular ${\beta}-agarase$ was prepared by centrifugation of culture media. The enzyme exhibited relatively strong activity at $40^{\circ}C$ and was stable up to $60^{\circ}C$. Using PCR primers derived from the ${\beta}-agarase$ gene of Vibrio sp., the gene encoding ${\beta}-agarase$ from Agarivorans sp. JA-1 was cloned and sequenced. The structural gene consists of 2931 bp encoding 976 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 107,360 Da. The deduced amino acid sequence showed 99% and 34% homology to $agaA^{2)}$ and $agaB^{2)}$ genes for ${\beta}-agarase$ from Vibrio sp., respectively. The expression plasmid for ${\beta}-agarase$ gene of Agarivorans sp. JA-1 is being constructed and the recombinant enzyme will be biochemically characterized.
Unlike water applications, the photocatalytic technique utilizing light-emitting-diodes as an alternative light source to conventional lamp has rarely been applied for low-level indoor air purification. Accordingly, this study investigated the applicability of UV-LED to annular-type photocatalytic reactor for removal of indoor-level benzene and toluene at a low concentration range associated with indoor air quality issues. The characteristics of photocatalyst was determined using an X-ray diffraction meter and a scanning electron microscope. The photocatalyst baked at $350^{\circ}C$ exhibited the highest photocatalytic degradation efficiencies(PDEs) for both benzene and toluene, and the photocatalysts baked at three higher temperatures(450, 550, and $650^{\circ}C$) did similar PDEs for these compounds. The average PDEs over a 3-h period were 81% for benzene and close to 100% for toluene regarding the photocatalyst baked at $350^{\circ}C$, whereas they were 61 and 74% for benzene and toluene, respectively, regarding the photocatalyst baked at $650^{\circ}C$. As the light intensity increased from 2.4 to 3.5 MW $cm^{-1}$, the average PDE increased from 36 to 81% and from 44% to close to 100% for benzene and toluene, respectively. In addition, as the flow rate increased from 0.1 to 0.5 L $min^{-1}$, the average PDE decreased from 81% to close to zero and from close to 100% to 7% for benzene and toluene, respectively. It was found that the annular-type photocatalytic reactor inner-inserted with UV-LEDs can effectively be applied for the decomposition of low-level benzene and toluene under the operational conditions used in this study.

Polypropylene (PP), a thermoplastic resin with excellent mechanical, thermal, chemical, and water resistance properties, has been attracting attention due to its economic efficiency and recyclability. However, repeated processing of thermoplastic resins can lead to property degradation, and the point at which quality degradation occurs varies depending on the processing conditions. In this study, we evaluated the performance changes of composite materials with repeated processing by blending PP resin with various additives and conducting extrusion and injection processes repeatedly. In addition, we evaluated the mechanical properties of composite materials to evaluate the effect of MFI value change during repeated processing on fiber impregnation in composite material processing.

This study was performed to explore the deterioration of physicochemical quality of beef hind limb during frozen storage at −20℃, affected by repeated freeze-thaw cycles. The effects of three successive freeze-thaw cycles on beef hind limb were investigated comparing with unfrozen beef muscle for 80 d by keeping at −20±1℃. The freeze-thaw cycles were subjected to three thawing methods and carried out to select the best one on the basis of deterioration of physicochemical properties of beef. As the number of repeated freeze-thaw cycles increased, drip loss decreased and water holding capacity (WHC) increased (p<0.05) till two cycles and then decreased. Cooking loss increased in cycle one and three but decreased in cycle two. Moreover, drip loss, WHC and cooking loss affected (p<0.05) by thawing methods within the cycles. However, pH value decreased (p<0.05), but peroxide value (p<0.05), free fatty acids value (p<0.05) and TBARS value increased (p<0.05) significantly as the number of repeated freeze-thaw cycles increased. Moreover, significant (p<0.05) interactive effects were found among the thawing methods and repeated cycles. As a result, freeze-thaw cycles affected the physicochemical quality of beef muscle, causing the degradation of its quality.

3.5KHz subbottom profiling systems are useful for delineating of shallow (up to 10~100m below the sea bottom) geological structure. These systems are generally used to image geological structures with less than 1m of vertical resolution. However swell in the sea is quite often higher than 1m, causing degradation in the quality of the 3.5KHz subbottom profiles. In this paper, we show the quality of digitally recorded data can be enhanced by the suppression of swell effect. Prior to suppression of swell effect, sea bottom detection procedure was applied using the characteristics that the amplitude of sea bottom reflection is high. To suppress the swell effect, we applied moving average method and high-cut filtering method using the extracted water depth of adjacent traces. Acceptable results were obtained from both methods. In the case of bad quality data or shallow data interfered with direct wave, the suppression of swell effect is difficult due to incorrect sea bottom detection.
We studied the residual patterns of two fungicides, dichlofluanid and iprodione, in cherry tomato greenhouse after applying with the recommended and double dose. Also, the degradation patterns during storage periods of up to ten days were compared between at room temperature (20$^{\circ}C$) and at cold temperature (4$^{\circ}C$). Removal rates of fungicides by washing with tap-water and detergent solution (0.1%, 0.2%) were measured. Half-lives of dichlofluanid and iprodione in greenhouse cherrytomato were 2.2$\sim$3.5 and 3.3$\sim$5.4 days, respectively. During the storage period, the residues were dissipated more slow. Removal rates were 62.8$\sim$80.3% by tap-water, 60.4$\sim$83.1% by 0.1% detergent solution, and 65.3$\sim$77.6% by 0.2% detergent solution. So, we can predict of terminal residues from cultivation period to marketing, storage and consuming.
