  • High-strength plastic water supply pipe evaluation method was evaluated in this study. Up to date, high strength water supply pipes that we install are mostly ductile cast iron pipes. Sometimes, a few PVC pipes are installed. Metal pipes have rust problem on the surface, causing serious damage to metal pipes and reducing the expected life span of water piping system. Nowadays, depending on technology development, some companies have improved properties of general PVC pipe performance with remarkable properties that exceed KS and ASTM standard. Here, we suggest a new method of performance evaluation for high-strength water plastic pipes.

  • Plastic pipes Wrapped with synthetic filter are recently used for drainage or Collecting of Underground water. But it's use is possible only for small size of diameter less than 300mm, because large size plastic pipes are not readily availabe. For large diameter infiltration gallery, porous concrete pipes are now used, but it's heavy weight brings difficulties in making, moving and setting of the pipes. With it's conventional method of filter setting, fine sands are brought into the pipes to make trouble to lifting pumps and channels Therefore, initial construction cost and maintenance cost become high. To solve-this problem, new method is developed and tested. Small PVC pipes(diameter 14mm) are assembled at the site of construction to newly devised I beam type circls. The size of circular inpiltration gallery is optionally determined by I beam type circle which support small PVC pipes and is made of PVC amterial. This gallery are wrappd with syntheitc filter to prevent sand instruction. In this test, the diameter of 300, 400, 500mm were used. I beam type circles were made with PVC plated with thickness. t=6, 9, 12mm. Water quantity collected through the PVC circulor gallery are measured and the strengths of the gallery. 1. Allowable setting depth of gallery pipe below graund for the case of t=6mm, D=500mm is 2.72m. 2. Collected water quantity depends on soil texture, depth of water grandient of water surface, filter material angle of setting etc. 3. About 126% of water quantity collected from the one gallery pipe measured in two gallery pipes of two parallel installation.

  • Large steel water pipes in Korea are joined prevalently by bell end method and welded at inside as well as outside of the pipes with the length of leg which is same as or larger than the thickness of pipes. This results in an excessive consumption of material and labor compared with foreign counturies such as USA, so that in our recent situation of requiring a number of water pipes such consumption is very ineffective and an improvement in weld design of water pipes is urgently necessary. In this experimental study, the possibility of reducing the length of leg to 85% of the pipe thickness was investigated through observations of microstructure and cross section of weldments, the tensile test, and the impact test of the field and laboratory specimens. As the results of this study, it was revealed that water pipes which have the leg of fillet about 0.8xthickness show a good weldability, have a greater strength than the base metal and absorb the enough energy to be safe in the working condition of the pipes.

  • Large steel water pipes are joined prevalently by the bell end method, and are welded both at inside and outside of lapped parts. In practice, welded joints of water pipes are very critical, because in most cases failure of pipes causing leakage occurs at the welded joint. Therefore some methods have been developed to ensure the soundness of welded joints of water pipes, like leakage tests and nondestructive tests (NDTs). But one of the major characteristics that affects the soundness of welded Joints is the stress distribution caused by welding and external forces. Some studies have been carried out on the residual stress of steel water popes, but complex stress distributions by welding and external forces are rarely studied. In this study, temperature and stress distributions in steel water pipes produced by welding are predicted by a three-dimensional finite element method(FEM). Also, stress values are measured from real steel water pipes by the hole-drilling methods, and compared with predicted ones. The influence of some typical post weld treatments on residual stress distribution was also investigated by residual stress measurements.

  • This study investigated the construction and operation status of sewer pipes and water-purifier tanks near densely populated areas like large apartment complexes, in order to find out cause for offensive orders. The study results revealed that the main cause arose from the water-purifier tank and public sewer pipes near ordinary residential areas. First, in case of independent water-purifier tanks, the air is forced into the rotten part of large tanks nearby which should be operated in an anaerobic state, so that the tank changes into an aerobic state, or dirty water, which is returned during the sludge return process, falls on the top of the rotten tank, preventing scum from forming within the tank. Such problems cause incompletely purified water in the purifier tank to be discharged, which in turn results in filthy water. Second, in case of public sewer pipes, deteriorated or aging pipes, or the mixture of rain water and dirty water by mixing up combined and separated sewers system can cause foul odors in residential areas. Therefore, offensive odors in residential areas can be radically reduced through the appropriate construction and management of facilities including water-purifier tanks. As well, if more separate sewers are installed as part of an improvement project for public sewer pipes, complaints about foul smell can be minimized.

  • This study suggested a model that can predict a degradation condition over time of two plastic pipes, PE and PVC, which are currently used in the country. This study was analyzed physical characteristics change of plastic pipes by comparison with initial physical characteristics (on the case of new pipes). Since this is dependent on accidents that already occurred, there are limitations that it only decides a priority on improvement based on relative corrosion status rather than precautionary aspects. The comparison results between physical degradation by the deducted performance rating and a conventional numerical scoring method showed that correlation coefficient was 0.67 for PE pipes and 0.86 for PVC pipes, indicating a high correlation. According to this result, it has been decided that the performance rating suggested herein can be applied naturally to the criterion of an improvement decision, which was based on Scoring System. From results of the research, it is expected that a reliable result can be provided to an improvement decision process related to degradation of plastic pipes by comprehensively comparing and evaluating a condition of pipe materials(direct factors) and an environmental impact(indirect factors).

  • This study was conducted to optimize a unidirectional flushing program in distribution pipes by analysis of water pressure, velocity, quality, and other parameters during flushing. As a result, correlation coefficient between flushed pipe length and the flushing duration was obtained $R^2=0.83$ and the equation $Y_{Time}=0.0571{\cdot}X_{Pipe\;length}+4.7648$ for 10 pipes. The averaged flushing velocity in the pipes, 1.1 m/s, was enough to remove loose deposits on the inner wall of the pipes. 3 of 92 water samples taken during flushing met the National Drinking Water Quality Standard for Fe and Mn, but not for Al. Turbidity less than 1 NTU is suggested for the appropriate criteria to finish flushing in pipes. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) between turbidity and TSS was 0.95 and the equation was induced as $Y_{TSS}=1.2068{\cdot}X_{Turbidity}$. The amount of removed deposits could be estimated from the turbidity data of discharged water in field because turbidity and TSS in the discharged water is highly correlated.

  • One of the major characteristics that affects the life of welded steel water pipes is the stress distribution caused by welding and external forces. Some studios have bean carried out on the residual stress of steel water pipes. But the results on the stress distributions by welding and complex external forces are rare, because real water pipes operate under the ground and many kinds of external forces act simultaneously on the joints. To understand the complex stress distributions of welded joints, therefore predictions by numerical or analytic methods are required. In this study, temperature and stress distributions in steel water pipes produced by welding are predicted by a three-dimensional finite element method(FEM). Based on these results, stress distributions by welding and complex external forces are evaluated by adopting the same numerical method. The influence of some post weld heat treatments on residual stress distributions is also investigated.

  • The pipes used in buildings are generally categorized into metallic or plastic materials. Metal pipes, such as copper and stainless steel pipes, are mainly used for water and hot water supply, and for the heating system. However, plastic pipes made of polyethylene and cross-linked polyethylene are used for floor heating, water drainage, and air vent systems. Usually, plastic pipes have thermal demerits, such as high linear expansion coefficients and bending phenomenon by hot water, although the pipes have several merits of light weight, low price, low thermal conductivity, and the comparatively high workability of metal pipes. Therefore, if those kind of demerits are overcome, plastic pipes can be easily accepted for hot water systems. This research is aimed to evaluate the applicability for vertical heating pipes of a plastic pipe system consisting of electric fusion fitting of a conductive carbon compound and propylene random glass fiber pipe, through measurement of the expansion rate and leakage in summer and winter seasons, in the apartment construction field.

  • The purpose of this experiment is to determine the relations between numbers, arrangements and pumping rates of wells. In this experiment, well pipes were vertically set up in an artificial water-bearing sand layer of homogeneous quality. Wells were arranged in different ways and their number was varied in order to observe the variation of pumping rates. Sands were filled in a square tank, $183cm{\times}91.5cm{\times}91.5cm$ so as to secure a water-bearing layer. Water was constantly supplied from a supply tank located at an end of the tank. The number of well pipes was varied from one to four. Well pipes were connected by a horizontal header pipes were connected by a horizontal header pipe located above them and one pump was used. Pumping rates were measured, when they were arranged in longitudinal and lateral directions, They were also arranged in a square and triangle. The main results thus obtained are presented as follows: (1) When well pipes are laid out in a longitudinal line, i. e., in a flow direction, the ratios of pumping rates of one-pipe well and wells 2-, 3- and 4- pipe t, are 1.903, 2.506 and 2.66, respectively. (2) When well pipes are laid out in a lateral line, i.e., in a perpendicular direction to flow, the same ratios as (1) are 1.912, 2.527 and 2.88. (3) When four pipes are laid out in a square and three pipes are laid out in a triangle, pumping rates are deereased, Comparing with the cases when pipes are laid out in a straight line.
