For the application in HI decomposition reaction of thermochemical water-splitting IS process, the carbonized membranes using the polymer material (polyimide) were prepared, and SiC membrane was also prepared by SiO treatment on those carbonized membranes. The weight change by the carbonation of polyimide was about 50%, and the weight decreased with an increase of carbonation temperature. The gas permeance ($H_2$ or $N_2$) of carbonized membrane decreased with an increase of carbonation temperature led to the pore closing. The gas permeance ($H_2$ or $N_2$) of SiC membrane increased with an increase of SiO treatment concentration, and the gas permeation mechanism was changed from the activiation energy flow to Knudsen flow.
Recently, solvent-resistant nanofiltration membranes have been studied for the separation of solvents or solutes using a molecular weight cut-off system of the polymer which is resistant to a specific solvent. Required conditions for these membranes must have are excellent physical properties and solvent resistance. Polybenzimidazole, which is known to be one of the most heat-resistant commercially available polymers, has an excellent inherent solvent resistance and it is even insoluble in stronger organic solvents when cross-linked. Therefore, in this study, the applicability of polybenzimidazole as a solvent resistant nanofiltration membrane was discussed. The membrane was fabricated using the non-solvent induced phase separation method and showed a suitable morphology as a nanofiltration membrane confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the permeance of the solvent in the presence or absence of cross-linking was investigated and the stability was also confirmed through long operation. The permeance test was carried out with five different solvents: water, ethanol, benzene, N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP); each of the initial flux was $6500L/m^2h$ (water, 2 bar), $720L/m^2h$ (DMAc, 5 bar), $185L/m^2h$ (benzene, 5 bar), $132L/m^2h$ (NMP, 5 bar), $65L/m^2h$ (ethanol, 5 bar) and the pressure between 2 and 5 bar was applied depending on the type of membrane.
Surface modification is very efficient and scalable approach to achieve improved membrane performance. We treated Reverse Osmosis Thin Film Composite (TFC RO) membrane with various concentrations of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG), a hydrophilic polymer after activation with sodium hypochlorite. This treatment resulted in an increment of the water flux by 43% and the salt rejection by 2.36% for the 3000 mg/l PEG-treated membrane. Further, these PEG-treated membranes were exposed to a mixture of 3000 mg/l PEG and 1000 mg/l sodium hypochlorite for 1 hour. Further modification of this membrane by PEG and sodium hypochlorite mixture increased the water permeance up to 133% when compared with the virgin TFC RO membrane. We characterized the treated membranes to understand the changes in wettability by contact angle analysis, changes in surface morphology and roughness by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) analysis.
To maintain the indoor air quality, many ventilation systems and technologies have been developed in the highly insulated and air tight buildings. In this study, a porous construction material, which is applicable to passive ventilation system, is developed and measured the performances of the permeability and the resistance of water vapor, and the dust collection efficiency. The average coefficient of water vapor permeability shows $3.6\;g/m^2{\cdot}h{\cdot}mmHg$, which is slightly higher than Hanji ($2.4{\sim}3.2\;g/m^2{\cdot}h{\cdot}mmHg$) and the average water vapor resistance factor shows $0.303\;g/m^2{\cdot}h{\cdot}mmHg/g$, which is slightly smaller than Hanji($0.309{\sim}0.315\;g/m^2{\cdot}h{\cdot}mmHg/g$). The pressure drop of the porous construction material is smaller than the HEPA filter and the minimum dust collection efficiency shows 82.8% in the range of $2{\sim}9\;cm/s$.
Generally, closed slots are adopted to reduce the water friction loss in both the stator and the rotor of water filling submersible motor due to the special environment of operation. One of the obvious differences between the traditional induction motors and water filling submersible motors is that the submersible motors only need relatively smaller starting torque. This paper aims to analyze the slot leakage reactance of water filling submersible motor during starting transient operation. An improved analytical method which considered the magnetic saturation of the slot bridge and the skin effect of rotor bars is proposed. The slot permeance factor which has a direct impact on the slot leakage reactance is calculated. Then finite element models with different stator slot types are constructed and search coils are introduced to measure the slot flux linkage. Moreover, the starting performances of the models with two typical stator slots are compared and the flux leakage characteristics are obtained. Finally, the results obtained by finite element method are very close to the results obtained by analytical method.

The organic solvent robust polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes were prepared as organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane for the recycling of alcoholic solvents using non-solvent induced phase separation with different dope solution concentration and coagulant composition of water/ethanol mixtures to control the membrane morphology and permeation performance. Investigation on crosslinking of polybenzimidazole indicated that the membrane crosslinked with dibromoxylene (DBX) had enough mechanical strength and solvent resistance to be applied as a OSN membranes. The crosslinked PBI membrane prepared by more than 20wt% dope concentration coagulated in water showed a rejection of > 90% to Congo Red (MW of 696.66 g/mol) while pure ethanol permeances was more than 22.5 LMH/bar at 5 bar. Investigation on coagulant composition indicated that ethanol permeance through crosslinked PBI OSN membrane increased with increasing of ethanol concentration in water/ethanol mixture coagulants.
We developed a water-selective ceramic composite membrane for use as a dehydration membrane reactor for dimethylether (DME) synthesis from methanol. The membranes were modified on the porous stainless steel support by the sol-gel method accompanied by a suction process. The improved membrane modification process was effective in increasing the vapour permselectivity by removal of defects and pinholes. The optimized alumina/silica composite membrane exhibited a water permeance of 1.14${\times}$10$^{-7}$ mol/$m^2$.sec.Pa and a water/methanol selectivity of 8.4 at permeation temperature of 25$0^{\circ}C$. The catalytic reaction for DME synthesis from methanol using the membrane was performed at 23$0^{\circ}C$, and the reaction conversion was compared with that of the conventional fixed-bed reactor. The reaction conversion of the membrane reactor was much higher than that of the conventional fixed-bed reactor. The reaction conversion of the membrane reactor and the conventional fixed-bed reactor was 82.5 and 68.0%, respectively. This improvement of reaction efficiency can last if the water vapour produced in the reaction zone is removed continuously.

It is well-known that polyethersulfone (PES) has high $CO_2$ selectivity over $N_2\;(or\;CH_4)$ and excellent pressure resistance of $CO_2$ plasticization among muy commercialized engineering plastics[1-4]. Asymmetric PES hollow fiber membranes for flue gas separation were developed by dry-wet spinning technique. The dope solution consists of PES, NMP and acetone. Water and water/NMP mixtures are used in outer and inner coagulants, respectively. Gas permeation rate (i.e., permeance) and $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity were measured with pure gas, respectively and the micro-structure of hollow fiber membranes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The effects of polymer concentration, ratio of NMP to acetone, length of air gap, evaporation condition and silicone coating were investigated on the $CO_2/N_2$ separation properties of the hollow fibers. Optimized PES hollow fiber membranes exhibited high permeance of $25\~50$ GPU and $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of $30\~40$ at room temperature and have the apparent skin layer thickness of about $0.1\;{\mu}m$. The developed PES hollow fiber membranes, would be a good candidate suitable for the flue gas separation process.
This work presents inexpensive inorganic precursor formulations to yield submicron range symmetric ceramic microfiltration (MF) membranes whose average pore sizes were between 0.1 and $0.4{\mu}m$. Incidentally, the sintering temperature used in this work was about 800 to $950^{\circ}C$ instead of higher sintering temperatures ($1100^{\circ}C$) that are usually deployed for membrane fabrication. Thermogravimetric (TGA) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were carried out to evaluate the effect of temperature on various phase transformations during sintering process. The effect of sintering temperature on structural integrity of the membrane as well as pore size distribution and average pore size were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The average pore sizes of the membranes were increased from 0.185 to $0.332{\mu}m$ with an increase in sintering temperature from 800 to $950^{\circ}C$. However, a subsequent reduction in membrane porosity (from 34.4 to 19.6%) was observed for these membranes. Permeation experiments with both water and air were carried out to evaluate various membrane morphological parameters such as hydraulic pore diameter, hydraulic permeability, air permeance and effective porosity. Later, the membrane prepared with a sintering temperature of $950^{\circ}C$ was tested for the treatment of synthetic oily waste water to verify its real time applicability. The membrane exhibited 98.8% oil rejection efficiency and $5.36{\times}10^{-6}\;m^3/m^2.s$ permeate flux after 60 minutes of experimental run at 68.95 kPa trans-membrane pressure and 250 mg/L oil concentration. Based on retail and bulk prices of the inorganic precursors, the membrane cost was estimated to be $220 /$m^2$ and $1.53 /$m^2$, respectively.
On purpose to reduce accumulated moisture and to prevent moisture condensation in a light-frame wall, thermal characteristics and moisture behaviors were investigated for four different wall assemblies; a) typical wall, b) addition of vapor retarder between the insulation and the gypsum board, c) addition of air gap for natural ventilation behind the siding, d) composition with b) and c). Each wall was tested under two climate conditions; 1) $20^{\circ}C$, 50% RH (indoor) and $30^{\circ}C$, 85% RH (outdoor), 2) $30^{\circ}C$, 85% RH (indoor) and $20^{\circ}C$, 50% RH (outdoor). The results showed that the typical wall assembly had poor resistance against moisture intrusion from the inside of building. Outdoor and indoor humidity caused the moisture condensations on the inside of the siding and the back surface of the sheathing respectively. The addition of a vapor retarder did not give significant improvement in preventing the moisture intrusion.
