  • For the analysis of water supply network, demand-driven and pressure-driven analysis methods have been proposed. Of the two methods, demand-driven analysis (DDA) can only be used in a normal operation condition to evaluate hydraulic status of a pipe network. Under abnormal conditions, i.e., unexpected pipe destruction, or abnormal low pressure conditions, pressure-driven analysis (PDA) method should be used to estimate the suppliable flowrate at each node in a network. In order to carry out the pressure-driven analysis, head-outflow relationship (HOR), which estimates flowrate at a certain pressure at each node, should be first determined. Most previous studies empirically suggested that each node possesses its own characteristic head-outflow relationship, which, therefore, requires verification by using actual field data for proper application in PDA modeling. In this study, a model pipe network was constructed, and various operation scenarios of normal and abnormal conditions, which cannot be realized in real pipe networks, were established. Using the model network, data on pressure and flowrate at each node were obtained at each operation condition. Using the data obtained, previously proposed HOR equations were evaluated. In addition, head-outflow relationship at each node was analyzed especially under multiple pipe destruction events. By analyzing the experimental data obtained from the model network, it was found that flowrate reduction corresponding to a certain pressure drop (by pipe destruction at one or multiple points on the network) followed intrinsic head-outflow relationship of each node. By comparing the experimentally obtained head-outflow relationship with various HOR equations proposed by previous studies, the one proposed by Wagner et al. showed the best agreement with the exponential parameter, m of 3.0.

  • According to the last 5 year statistics of KGS, there occurred 22 under ground gas pipe accidents per year in Korea. And about 5 accidents per year were caused from the third party digging. IT recognition technique could reduce such underground gas accidents. Among IT recognition technique, RFID is most poplar. In the air, RFID were applied to various fields including the distribution industry, but underground condition, the research and application cases of RFID were little This research was undertaken to see the applicability of RFID to underground gas pipe safety. By use of 900 MHz RFID reader and commercial metal tag, the stable recognition distance was measured in the similar underground condition of LNG pipe. Stable recognition depth of RFID tag were measured to be 50, 45, 25 cm in the medium of soil, 5 cm-thick-concrete+soil, and water respectively. The measured distances were considered to be the meaningful distance to prevent the gas pipe accidents Also the efficient ways to input the required gas pipe data to the 24 byte metal tag were proposed. Application of RFID to underground LNG supply system will not only reduce the gas accidents due to third party digging but also improve the gas line maintenance efficiency.

  • Hydraulic analysis of water distribution system can be divided into demand-driven analysis and pressure-driven analysis. Demanddriven analysis can give unrealistic results to simulate hydraulic conditions under abnormal operating conditions such as sudden demand increase and pipe failure. In Korea, demand-driven analysis has been used to establish emergency water supply plan in many water projects, but it is necessary to use pressure-driven analysis for establishment of emergency water supply plan. In this study, WaterGEMS model that was developed for pressure-driven analysis is used to evaluation of emergency water supply plan of J city. As the results, it was able to draw up more efficient plan for water supply in small block, and established emergency water supply plan of J city was determined to be appropriate.

  • In this study, we developed the CCPP calculating program, which is a kind of index and can determine whether calcium carbonate would precipitate or not in pipe line of water distribution system. Through 9 complicated procedures, CCPP can be calculated. Assuming pH of equilibrium as a first trial, compare the right-hand-side result with left-hand-side result. If the percentage difference between the two results is less than a prescribed tolerance, the initial assumption for the assumed equilibrium pH is adequate. If the difference is too large, make a different assumption and repeat until a result within the prescribed tolerance is achieved. Plugging the intermediate results into the final equation, we could compute the CCPP. Using Fortran and Visual Basic languages, we developed the program. As a result of application of the program, the water quality of intaking water of Han River is highly corrosive by the index of CCPP.

  • Optimal design of the water supply pipe network aims to minimize construction cost while satisfying the required hydraulic constraints such as the minimum and maximum pressures, and velocity. Since considering one single design factor (i.e., cost) is very vulnerable for including future conditions and cannot satisfy operator's needs, various design factors should be considered. Hence, this study presents three kinds of design factors (i.e., minimizing construction cost, maximizing reliability, and surplus head) to perform multi-objective optimization design. Harmony Search (HS) Algorithm is used as an optimization technique. As well-known benchmark networks, Hanoi network and Gyeonggi-do P city real world network are used to verify the applicability of the proposed model. In addition, the proposed multi-objective model is also applied to a real water distribution networks and the optimization results were statistically analyzed. The results of the optimal design for the benchmark and real networks indicated much better performance compared to those of existing designs and the other approach (i.e., Genetic Algorithm) in terms of cost and reliability, cost, and surplus head. As a result, this study is expected to contribute for the efficient design of water distribution networks.

  • The failure of water pipelines is progressed by several compound factors and the collection and analysis of data about pipeline failure are inevitable for effective pipeline rehabilitation. Data analysis of pipeline failure was already performed in USA and Europe. Based on such phenomena, failure characteristics about metropolitan pipelines in Korea were analyzed: The conclusions of this study are as followings. 1. The failure cause of pipelines can be classified into natural cause and artificial cause. Artificial cause is 32% of total causes, so artificial failure as several constructions happens frequently in Korea. Although the failure by old pipe is greatest of any other causes m classtfied cause, failure cause is not classified in detail now. 2. The damaged part of pipelines is affected by cities, distribution system inventory, bedding conditions, and so on. In this study, the failure of pipeline body(67%) is greater than the failure of pipeline joint(33%) in natural failure. 3. In regard to pipe materials, failure rate of DCIP(0.8456), PEP(0.7288), and GSP(0.6643) is greater than that of CIP(0.3985) and CWSP(0.2348). 4. Usually, faIlure rate is increased in proportion to diameter of pipeline. In this study, CIP, DCIP, and CWSP have clear trends. But the trends of PEP is reverse, the case of GSP, HP is obscure due to data shortage. 5. There are no direct relationships between burial age and failure rate of pipelines. 6. Annual breaks and winter(Nov.~Feb.) breaks of pipelines are investigated. As a result, WInter breaks to annual breaks of CIP is 51.3%(Seoul), 51.1%(Taegu),38.7%(Pusan). This phenomena have direct correlation with average winter temp. of cities.

  • The optimal design for water distribution system (WDS) is not only satisfying the minimum required water pressure of the nodes, but also minimizing pipe cost, etc. The number of designs of WDS increases exponentially due to the arrangement of various pipes. Various optimization algorithms were applied to propose an optimized design of WDS. In this study, Modified Hybrid Vision Correction Algorithm (MHVCA) with improved self-adapting parameter was applied to optimal design of WDS. The performance was improved by changing the Hybrid Rate (HR) of the existing Hybrid Vision Correction Algorithm (HVCA) to nonlinear HR. To verify the performance of the proposed MHVCA, it applied to mathematical problems consisting of 2 and 30 decision variables and constrained mathematical problems. In order to review the application results of MHVCA, it was compared with Harmony Search (HS), Improved Harmony Search (IHS), Vision Correction Algorithm (VCA) and HVCA. Finally, MHVCA was applied to the optimal design problem of WDS and the results were compared with other algorithms. MHVCA showed better results than other algorithms in mathematical problems and WDS problem. MHVCA will be able to show good results by applying to various water resource engineering problems as well as problems applied in this study.

  • The advancement of electronics and telecommunication technologies has forced the risk management system for underground metallic structures to evolve into the remote monitoring and control system. Especially, facilities such as gas pipelines, oil pipelines and water distribution lines might make hazardous effect on human safety without continuous monitoring and control. As a result, pipeline engineers have applied cathodic protection system to prevent the degradation of their facilities by corrosion and carried out a periodic monitoring of the pipe-to-soil (P/S) potentials at numberous test boxes along their pipelines. The latter action on a road in downtowns, however, is so much dangerous that the inspectors should be ready to suffer the threatening of their lives and maintenance. In order to minimize these social costs and hazards, a stand-alone type corrosion monitoring equipment which can be installed in test box, store the P/S data for given Belied and send the data by wired/wireless telecommunications is under development. In order to obtain the exact P/S data, however, a reference electrode should be located as close to the pipeline as possible. Actually, the measured potential by a conventional portable reference electrode contain inevitably an IR drop portion caused by the current flow from the cathodic protection rectifier or the subway railroad. To minimize this error, it is recommended that the reference electrode should be buried within 10 cm from the pipeline. In this paper, we describe the design parameters for fabricating the permanent type reference electrode and the characteristics of the developed reference electrode.

  • In this study, a long-term unsteady simulation model has been developed using rigid water column theory which is more accurate than Extended-period model and more efficient comparing with water-hammer simulation model. The developed model is applied to 24-hours unsteady simulation considering daily water-demand and water-hammer analysis caused by closing a valve. For the case of 24-hours daily simulation, the pressure of each node decreases as the water demand increase, and when the water demand decrease, the pressure increases. During the simulation, the amplitudes of flow and pressure variation are different in each node and the pattern of flow variation as well as water demand is quite different than that of KYPIPE2. Such discrepancy necessitates the development of unsteady flow analysis model in water distribution network system. When the model is applied to water-hammer analysis, the pressure and flow variation occurred simultaneously through the entire network system by neglecting the compressibility of water. Although water-hammer model shows the lag of travel time due to fluid elasticity, in the aspect of pressure and flow fluctuation, the trend of overall variation and quantity of the result are similar to that of water-hammer model. This model is expected for the analysis of gradual long-term unsteady flow variations providing computational accuracy and efficiency as well as identifying pollutant dispersion, pressure control, leakage reduction corresponding to flow-demand pattern, and management of long-term pipeline net work systems related with flowrate and pressure variation in pipeline network systems
