This study monitored changes in the level of heterotrophic bacteria in the filtrate and investigated the effect of stagnant water on it, using a batch-operated, gravity-driven membrane system for household water treatment. The filtration test was carried out in the presence and absence of stagnant water in the filtrate line. The results showed that stagnant water accelerated the heterotrophic bacteria levels, measured by heterotrophic plate count, even though the heterotrophic plate count of the filtrate finally increased up to $10^5CFU/mL$ regardless of the presence of stagnant water. When the change in heterotrophic plate count of a batch was monitored over filtration time, heterotrophic plate count of the filtrate rapidly decreased within 5 min for each batch filtration. Biofilm formation on the filtrate line was observed in the presence of stagnant water. The biofilm fully covered the filtrate line and contained numerous microorganisms. During storage after filtration, heterotrophic plate count increased exponentially. To improve the filtrate quality of a filtration-based household water treatment system, therefore, the stagnant water in the filtrate line should be minimized, the filtrate produced at the first 5 min is recommended not to be used as potable water, and the storage of filtrate should be avoided.
In order to investigate the microbiological contamination of spring water, we performed the standard plate count, coliform and psychrotrophilic bacteria in 109 spring waters in Seoul. Of 109 spring waters, geometirc mean standard plate count was 0.19 CFU/ml, and the highest in Mt. Boolam, 4..43 CFU/ml and Mt. Dobong, 3.86 CFU/ml, but not detected in Mt. Woomyun and Mt. Cheonggye. Four spring waters have shown over 100 CFU/ml in standard plate count. The geometric mean psychrotrophilic bacteria was 49.2 CFU/ml, the most prevalent spring water was Mt. Nam, 125 CFU/ml, the lowest Mt. Woomyeun. Among a total of 109, coliform was detected from 21 spring waters(19.3%) and the geometric mean of coliform was 0.005 MPN/100ml. The isolated genera of coliform were 7 isolates of E. coli(33%), 5 Klebsiella(24%), 4 Enterobacter(19%), 3 Citrobacter(14%) and 2 Serratia(10%), respectively. The 22 spring waters(20.2%) failed to meet the standard limits of drinking water based on regulation in Korea. The inappropriate rate of standard plate count in spring water was 4.5%, that of coliform was 81.1% and both of them was 13.6%. There was the significant correlation between standard plate count and psychrotrophilic bacteria in spring water(r=0.95, p<0.01).

Purpose : This study was designed to provide basic data of effective sanitization method of sprout vegetable for microbiological safety. Methods : Sanitization treatments were performed by dipping the sprout into chlorine and vinegar water. Microbial analysis were composed of the total plate count(TPC) and coliform group count(CGC). Result : Among chlorine water sanitization, the microbial reduction was largest in 100ppm chlorine water, and its TPC and coliform group count decreased to 6.01 log CFU/g and 5.06 log CFU/g. The effective dipping time in 100ppm chlorine water treatment was 5.97 log CFU/g and 5.91 log CFU/g for 30min and 60min, in which TPC were below the microbiological safety limits of 6.00 log CFU/g. Coliform group counts were decreased to 5.44, 5.46, 5.42 log CFU/g in the dipping the spouts for 30min, 60min and 90min. As a result of sanitizing alfalfa spout by vinegar water, a microbial counts tended to decrease with increasing concentration and the dipping time. The effective concentration of vinegar water was 2% for TPC(6.00 log CFU/g) and 1% for coliform group count(5.20 log CFU/g). With 1% vinegar water treatment, TPC became below the microbiological safety limits in all samples and in particular, the sample treated for 60min and 90min(4.93, 4.54 log CFU/g). While coliform group counts were decreased to 3.91 log CFU/g in the dipping the sprouts for 90min, those were still beyond the permitted limit. Conclusion : To secure the food safety of food service facilities including kindergarten feeding, it is considered that along with the systematic study of effective disinfection method for microbiological control at the preconditioning level of spout vegetable within the range of secured maleficence to human body, and the study regarding the measures to lower the initial microbiological pollution of spout vegetable.

For this study, an online particle counter was installed before and after the activated carbon filtration process of D water treatment plant where has advanced water treatment processes, produces average 900,000ton/day of drinking water and supply the produced drinking water to Busan citizens. We collected and analyzed particle count data for about 1 year. We inspected particle breakthrough in three out of sixteen filter processes operated at same conditions, i.e. 5th filter, 6th filter and 7th filter. According to the monitoring results, 6th and 7th filters showed similar results while 5th filter showed different results. When compared seasonal effect, the particle count for dry season was below 10 particles/ml while the particle count for August when monthly average rainfall is over 200mm was much higher than for dry season. In January and August, there was a difference in breakthrough particle size. In January, small particles in 2~3um were mainly detected while in August 10um particles were mainly detected and the size distribution was 40% of total count.
The important society facility to maintain daily lives and the various activity is the water service. In this paper, we propose a design and implementation method of water count management system for the measurement, distribution and control of water quantity. The proposed system for systematic facility management and effective water service administration is a design methodology for foundation facility of water service to provide good quality water and to prevent a leak of water, estimating the water capacity.
Jeju Eoseungsaeng lake which is a main water resource of Eoseungsaeng water treatment plant($Q=15,000m^3/d$) experienced high chromaticity(40 CU) and pH(9.46) in 2013. This could decline customer's confidence on drinking water quality unless proper identification and removal of chromaticity were implemented. To find cause of chromaticity, water monitoring on various water parameters including TOC, algal cell count, Chl-a, turbidity, SS, conductivity, etc. were implemented. Iron and manganese were excluded from the cause of chromaticity due to its low concentration (i.e., < 0.02 mg/L). Correlation among water parameters showed that relationship between algal cell count and chromaticity was the highest(R=0.43), which suggested that presumably the main reason of chromaticity occurrence in Jeju Eoseungsaeng lake was algae.
This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between the water resistance and the air permeability. The results are as follows; 1. In case of the water proofing fabrics, We cannot find that there is any relationship between the water resistance and the air permeability according to the kinds of finishing, while in case of the water repellent finished fabries, we can find that there is a correlationship between them, especially the hydrostatic pressure and the air permeability are found to have negative correlation. 2. In case of the water proofing fabrics, the relationship between the water resistance and the air permeability is not affected by the thickness of the fabrics. On the other hand, in case of the water repellent finished fabrics, the relationship between them is affected by the thickness of the fabrics. Especially, the relationship between the hydrostatic pressure and the air permeability as well as the relationship between the water repellency and the air permeability is effect much by the thickness of the fabrics, too. 3. In case of the water proofing fabrics, the relationship between the water resistance and the air permeability is not affected by fabric count. On the otherhand, in case of the water repellent finished fabrics, the relationship between them is affected by the fabric count. Especially, the relationship between hydrostatic pressure and the air permeability, and the relationship between the water proof and the air permeability are affected much by fabric count.
To elucidate the influence of pipe materials on the VBNC (viable but nonculturable) state and bacterial numbers in drinking water, biofilm and effluent from stainless steel, galvanized iron, and polyvinyl chloride pipe wafers were analyzed. Although no HPC (heterotrophic plate count) was detected in the chlorinated influent of the model system, a DVC (direct viable count) still existed in the range between 3- and 4-log cells/ml. Significantly high numbers of HPC and DVC were found both in biofilm and in the effluent of the model system. The pipe material, exposure time, and the season were all relevant to the concentrations of VBNC and HPC bacteria detected. These findings indicate the importance of determining the number of VBNC cells and the type of pipe materials to estimate the HPC concentration in water distribution systems and thus the need of determining a DVC in evaluating disinfection efficiency.
A study was carried out to find out the biological contamination of beaches in Korea from May 16, to June 2, 1972. Turbidity was measured and coliform groups were examined by membrane filter method as well as general sanitary condition of beaches. Main findings were as follows: 1. The average coliform group count was 5.0 per 100 ml of tested water, and the range of coliform. group count was 0~120 out of 8 beaches, Chungmun beach was found to be the least contaminated while Daechun was the most contaminated (23. 3/100 ml), however, those beaches surveyed. were satisfactory as far as bacteriological contaminations were concerned. 2. The average coliform group count of water samples from rising tides was 2.8/100 ml. The range of coliform count from rising tide was 0~26/100 ml, and those from receding were 1~120/100 ml. 3. The average turbidity of the water in Korean western beaches was 5.0 ppm, while that of Chejudo was 2.0 ppm. of 8 beaches surveyed, the turbidity of Daechon beach was the highest (7.0 ppm). 4. Out of 8 beaches surveyed shower facilities existed at only 4 beaches (50%), however the drainages of showers and bath rooms were not sanitarily adequate.
One hundred and eighty-seven water samples were collected from 23 of spring water, 2 of ground water, 1 of tap water in Pusan area and 3 of natural mineral waters. Total coliform group, fecal coliform, viable cell count and microflora were investigated to evaluate water quality of drinking water. The results were as follows: range and geometric mean value of total coliform and fecal coliform MPN's of spring water were 0~1,500/100 ml, 85/100 ml and 0~460/100 ml, 24/100 ml but coliform group was not detected in the samples of tap water and natural mineral water. Viable cell count of spring water, ground water and tap water were lower as 100 cell than the criteria for drinking water but that of natural mineral water was higher as 6.5X 10$^2$~7.4X 10$^3$ /ml. Predominant speces among the 219 strains isolated from the samples were 19.6% Aeromonas spp., 19.2% Enterobacteriaceae, 16% Acinetobacter spp. Especially, spring water and vessels were contaminated by Hafnia spp. and Providencia Spp, inhabitant of the oral cavity.
