Samples were collected from five stations in February, May, July, and September 2004 to investigate seasonal variations in the phytoplankton community and the relationship between dominant genera and environmental factors in Asan Bay. In February, microphytoplankton contributed 80% to the total chlorophyll a. Diatom dominated the phytoplankton community, accounting for 85.9% of the total cell number, followed by dinoflagellates (6%). Dominant species were Skeletonema costatum and Thalassiosira spp. Abundant diatom, including S. costatum and Thalassiosira spp., may be affected by water temperature and silicate at Station 1 and 2 in February 2004. In May, the nanophytoplankton contribution to total phytoplankton was higher than in other seasons. However, abundance of S. costatum and Thalassiosira spp. decreased, since the growth of S. costatum and Thalassiosira spp. might be limited by phosphates (P) resulting from low P concentration and a high DIN:DIP ratio in the outer region. In July, dominant phytoplankton groups were diatom (39%), cryptophyceae (28%), and cyanophyceae (20%). Dominant genera were Oscillatoria spp. and phytoflagellate of a monad type in the inner region (Station 1 and 2), whereas S. costatum was dominant in the outer region (Station 4 and 5). In September, dominant phytoplankton were diatom (69%) and cryptophyceae (28%). Dominant genera were phytoflagellate of the monad type, S. costatum in the inner region, while Chaetoceros spp. was dominant in the outer region.
To investigate the contribution of macroalgae to biogeochemical nutrients and carbon cycles, we measured the uptake rates of nutrients and $CO_2$ by Undaria pinnatifida using an incubation method in an acrylic chamber. From January to March 2010, U. pinnatifida was sampled at Ilkwang, a well-known area of macroalgae culture in Korea. The initial and final concentrations of nutrients, dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity, and pH of the chamber water were measured, and production/uptake rates were calculated using concentration changes, chamber volume, and incubation time. The production rate of dissolved oxygen by U. pinnatifida (n = 32) was about $5.4{\pm}4.0\;{\mu}mol\;g_{fw}^{-1\;}h^{-1}$. The uptake rate of total dissolved inorganic carbon (TDIC), calculated by total alkalinity and pH, was $7.9{\pm}6.5\;{\mu}mol\;g_{fw}^{-1}\;h^{-1}$. Nutrients uptake averaged $141.7{\pm}119.2$ nmol N $g_{fw}^{-1}\;h^{-1}$ and $15.0{\pm}9.1$ nmol P $g_{fw}^{-1}\;h^{-1}$. A positive linear correlation ($r^2$ = 9.6) existed between the production rate of dissolved oxygen and the uptake rate of total dissolved inorganic carbon, suggesting that these two factors serve as good indicators of U. pinnatifida photosynthesis. The relationships between fresh weight and uptake rates of nutrients and $CO_2$ suggested that younger specimens (<~50 g fresh weight) are much more efficient at nutrients and $CO_2$ uptake than are specimens >50 g. The amount of carbon uptake by the total biomass of U. pinnatifida in Korea during the year of 2008 was about 0.001-0.002% of global ocean carbon uptake. Thus, more research should be focused on macroalgae-based biogeochemical cycles to evaluate the roles and contributions of macroalgae to the global carbon cycle.

The objective of the study was to estimate the measurement uncertainty associated with determination of creatinine (Cr) in urine samples by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Centrifuged urine samples (10 ${\mu}L$) were diluted with 390 ${\mu}L$ of distilled water. To 20 ${\mu}L$ aliquots of diluted urine samples, 30 ${\mu}L$ of internal standard solution (Cr-$d_3$, 5 ${\mu}g/mL$) and 10 ${\mu}L$ of acetonitrile were added and filtered. The samples (1 ${\mu}L$) were introduced into LC-MS/MS with no further pretreatment. Cr was separated on a multi-mode ODS column (Scherzo SM-C18, 75 ${\times}$ 2.0 mm I.D., 3 ${\mu}m$) and quantified by LC-MS/MS operating in MRM mode (Cr, m/z 114.0${\rightarrow}$ 86.0; Cr-$d_3$, m/z 117.0${\rightarrow}$ 89.1). The four factors that contribute uncertainty to the final result were extracted and evaluated. The principal factors of contribution to combined standard uncertainty were sample dilution, calibration curve and repeatability, while the preparation of standard solution was only a minor factor. Relative extended uncertainty of the measured concentration was 14.2% in a real urine sample.
Object : This study was designed to research whether the protection and inhibitory effects of cardiovascular diseases in L-NAME induced rat or ECV 304 cell lines through the Cell morphological pattern, Tunel assay, LDH activity, heart rate, blood pressure and immunohistochemistric analysis by Boonsimgieum water extract Methods : Nitric oxide(NO) play an important role in normal and pathophysiological cells including as a messenger molecule, neurotransmitter, microbiocidal agent, or dilator of blood vessels and artheriosclerosis, hypertension, myocardial infarction, respectively. Endothelial cell products can modulate the magnitude of a response to a vasoconstrictor, as evinced by the greater constriction after endothelium removal or NO synthesis blockade. To investigate that Boonsimgieum in the potential contribution of the levels of nitric oxide generated by endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and the mechanisms of protection against NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), human ECV 304 cells, which normally do not express eNOS, were expressed by L-NAME. L-NAME stimulated rat or cells were found to be resistant to injury and delayed death following the Boonsimgieum. Inhibition of nitric oxide synthesis abolished the protective effect against L-NAME, thrombin and collagen exposure. Interestingly, such effects have been observed during stimulation with agents such as phenylephrine and KCl on L-NAME mediate rats, were damaged by the NOS inhibitor L-NAME. Result : As the result of this study, In group, the anti-apoptosis and necrosis in the cardiovascular system have a potential capacity for prevented, protected and treating the diseases of cardiovascular system, against the necrosis of rat and ECV 304 cells with Caspase 3 and calpain expression by L-NAME is promoted. Conclusion : these results demonstrate neuroprotective and memory enhancing effects of ZIBU, suggesting its beneficial actions for the treatment of AD.
Samples were collected from five stations monthly from October 2003 to September 2004 to investigate seasonal variation of size structure of phytoplankton and relationship between size-fractionated phytoplankton and environmental factors in the Asan Bay. The contribution of large cells (microphytoplankton, $>20\;{\mu}m$) to total concentrations of chlorophyll $\alpha$ was higher than small cells (nanophytoplankton, $3\sim20\;{\mu}m$; picophytoplankton, $<3\;{\mu}m$) during the sampling period. Especially, large cells contributed 80% to the total chlorophyll a from February, 2004 to April 2004 when chlorophyll $\alpha$ concentrations were high. The size structure of phytoplankton shifted from micro-size class to nano-size class and picophytoplankton rapidly increased when phytoplankton biomass decreased in May 2004. Microphytoplankton exhibited a high biomass in the upper region during winter-spring season whereas nano- and picophytoplankton showed two peaks in the middle-lower regions (Station 3,5) during spring and summer. Microphytoplankton are most likely controlled by water temperature and nutrient supply during the cold season whereas nano- and picophytoplankton may be affected by stratification, light exposure during the warm season.
Four in situ incubation experiments were conducted in May, August and November 2009, as well as February 2010 to determine the seasonal primary productivity and the community structure of phytoplankton at the Seomjin estuary. The primary production of phytoplankton ranged from 9 to 3560 mgC $m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$. Primary productivity was the highest in the summer season (August), which was influenced by improved optical and temperature conditions of the water, as well as the supply of nutrients derived from its surrounding watershed. Particularly, the upper station (SJ-1, SJ-2) of Seom-jin estuary showed a higher productivity, as a result of inflow of input nutrients originated from the terrestrial source. The fucoxanthin, as an index pigment of diatoms showed the highest concentration (0.74~9.51 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) at all stations, occupying 30~80% to total Chl a concentrations. The phytoplankton species composition determination, using a microscope showed similar results to the pigment analysis, which indicated diatom Skeletonema costatum, as the dominant species. The primary productivity in Seom-jin estuary indicates temporally and spatially large variation, according to different environmental conditions. Also, Skeletonema costatum has euryhaline features with relatively higher contribution.
We describe characteristics of diversity and distribution of oak forests on the Daegok-cheon gorge of the Southeastern Korean Peninsula, the oldest prehistoric site, in view of a sort of food resources of acorns. The $Z{\ddot{u}}rich$-Montpellier School's method was adopted for field investigation on the oak dominant stands. A total of 20 phytosociological $relev\acute{e}s$ composed of 193 taxa were analyzed by syntaxonomy and ecological flora. The Daegok-cheon's oak forests occupied 36.9% ($513,374m^2$) of the surveyed area, and its 99% ($507,677m^2$) was Quercus variabilis and Q. serrata stands. Oak forests of the Daegok-cheon gorge are a kind of regional vegetation type characterizing by the high relative net contribution degree (r-NCD) of Platycarya strobilacea and Sapium japonicum, which are an edaphic type of the xerophilous and thermophilic oak forests. The region of the Daegok-cheon petroglyphs is defined as an ecoregion with rich acorn supply and abundant water resources, and the warmer environment, which attracts prehistoric man.
The aim of this work to determine the formation of lactulose during heat treatment process as a contribution to the estabilishment of limits of chemical indicators for different types of heat processed milk and analyze of lactulose for the reconstituted milk added samples. The HTST(75$\^{C}$/15s) and UHT(130$\^{C}$/2∼3s) treatment realized with a pilot plant and heat-treated samples were stroed at 4, 10, 30$\^{C}$ for 4 weeks. Changes in lactulose was evaluated at 7 days intervals. The other heat treatment was sealed in glass tube and heated at 75$\^{C}$ for 10 to 120s and heated at 130$\^{C}$ for 2 to 60s in a thermostatically controlled constant temperature bath of glycerol. The reconstituted milk was made with full fat dry milk that reconstituted with deionized water to 10% total solid, and was added to milk at 10, 20, 30% respectively. The samples processed with a HTST pilot plant showed that lactulose was contained at 1.47∼1.52mg/10()ml and 8.19 ∼8.32mg/100ml for UHT-treated samples. Changes in the lactulose content of heat-treated samples during storage at 4 and 10$\^{C}$ for 4 weeks caused a slight increase, however a noticeable increase was observed at 30$\^{C}$ for 4 week. The glass tube samples showed that high correlations between relative increase in content of lactulose and increasing processing times(75$\^{C}$ : r = 0.986, 130$\^{C}$ : r = 0.987, respectively). Added with reconstituted milk would cause a increase of the lactulose content linear with increasing addition amount(r = 0.982). This results observed for lactulose in commercial milk samples would applied to the detection of chemical changes during heat treatment and illegal use of reconstituted milk.

Soil moisture is critical for understanding the spatial-temporal variability of hydrologic processes. The distributions of soil moisture have been explored along transect line in hillslope hydrology. In this study, we measured several soil moistures along transect lines during ten-month period at a hillslope located the Cheong-mi catchment. The soil moisture properties were expressed by simple statistical methods (average, standard deviation, and recession slope) and analyzed in terms of soil depths and transects from the seasonal context. Supplementary studies were also performed about the effect of location, topography and soil texture to the soil moisture responses. The spatial distributions of average soil moisture at deep soil layer were distinguished from those at near surface due to the possibility of expected factors such as subsurface lateral flow from upslope, preferential flow and existence of bedrock. The soil moistures in combined line affected from significant contribution of upper transect line were relatively higher(wetter), low variability compared to those in other transect lines and seemed to be under stabilization process. There are confirmed heterogeneity of soil moisture variation related with preferential flow and significant influence of soil texture for soil moisture properties in upslope.
This study was carried out to investigate the cause of acidification of rainwater and to evaluate the possibility of alternative water resource in Saemangeum. The rainwater were collected in the kwangwhal-myun, Saemangeum from March to September, 2009. The collected 7 samples were analyzed with pH meter, IC (ion chromatography) and ICP (inductively coupled plasma) about the pH and the major ions ($SO{_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$, $Cl^-$, $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$, $NH^{4+}$, $Na^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$) of rainwater. The order of the major anion concentration and the acidification contribution in the rainwater was $SO{_4}^{2-}$>$NO_3{^-}$>$Cl^-$, and that of the major cation was $Ca^{2+}$>$K^+$>$NH_4{^+}$>$Na^+$>$Mg^{2+}$. In the initial rainwater, the major ions concentration were higher than the middle period. pH of the rainwater was the lowest at May, but similar to the results of the others. And pH of the rainwater were significant correlation with $SO{_4}^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$ in Saemangeum. From this results, the rainwater was slight acidic, and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ was the main factor contributed to the rainwater acidification in Saemangeum.
