  • It has been confirmed that some Trihalomethanes (THMs) suspected as carcinogens, can be formed during chlorination for water supply through the reaction of chlorine and humic substances in water. The electrochemical characteristics on activated carbon fiber filter (ACF) electrode were investigated to remove the THMs in the chlorination process of drinking water. The electrochemical removal efficiency depended on the applied voltage and flow rate. In this study, the best result showed that the removal efficiency of THMs was higher than 99%.

  • Chemical analysis, statistical analysis and geochemical study were carried out to investigate the influence of the geology on the chemical characferistics of the mineral water in Taegu area. A simple comparision between the chemical components of the mineral water and their bedrocks indicates that the bedrock types in the catchmerit area control the chemical characteristics of the surface water. However more objective evidences for the mineral water-bedrock relationship come from the statistical analyses(cluster analysis and factor analysis). The results of the statistical analyses suggest that the bedrock type factor explains the data variation seven times as much as pollution does, which evidently indicates that the bedrock in the study area mainly control the mineral water chemistries. The results of comparision of the statistical analyses results with the mineral weathering reactions and mineral stability diagrams can be summarized as follows: 1. Plagioclase weathering to kaolinite provides SiO$_2$ , Ca$^{2+}$ and Na$^+$, and muscovite weathering to kaolinite provides K$^+$, and amphibole and mica minerals weathering to kaolinite provides F to the mineral water. Most of Ca$^{2+}$ and Mg$^{2+}$ in the mineral water are the products of carbonate mineral dissolution. SO$_4^{2-}$ may be the byproduct of sulfide oxidation. 2. The weatering of silicate mineral produces Ca-rich smectite and kaolinite, but Ca-rich smectite is unstable and will be transformed to more stable kaolinite because of the continuous dilution of the mineral water by precipitation. By Hashimoto's Mineral Balance Index, S-10 and S-12 mineral spring water were evaluated tasty and healthy water, S-9 and S-11 mineral spring water were evaluated tasty water and S-7, S-8 and S-13 mineral spring water were evaluated healthy water.

  • Electrocoagulation has been suggested as a promising alternative to conventional coagulation. The process is characterized by reduced sludge production, no requirement for chemical use, and ease of operation. However, this coagulation has scarcely been studied in water purifying process. This study was performed several batch experiments to compare turbidity removal between electrocoagulation and chemical coagulation. In addition, characteristics of floe were evaluated with zeta potential and particle size distributions. Electrocoagulation showed a relatively higher removal of turbidity (approximately 5%) with the same aluminum amount than conventional chemical coagulation. In addition, turbidity removal by electrocoagulation was less sensitive to pH and was greater for more extensive pH range than chemical coagulation. The results of zeta potential and floc size distributions illustrated that electrocoagulation provided the preferable conditions for coagulation such as zeta potential close to zero millivolt and increased portions of particles in the range of 40 and $100{\mu}m$.

  • To assess downward positions of water spray for the small-scale release of chlorine gas, dispersion coefficients for the Gaussian dispersion model were validated at the small-scale release experiment. And the downwind distances of water spray were assessed with the simulated results. As results, the Gaussian plume model using the Briggs' dispersion coefficient well estimated the dispersed characteristics for small-scale release of chlorine gas. The best adequate downwind position of water spray is the position of the maximum concentration of chlorine at the ground level. And the adequate vertical and horizontal dimensions of water spray consider the maximum width and height of cloud.

  • In this study, water quality characteristics of lakes in the Seosan area are analyzed. Components water quality were analysed at 10 sampled points in each lakes, and the results were evaluated for seasonal variation. It was found that water quality was over II~III class. Most of lakes in the Seosan area which implies that are suitable as the maintenance water. The concenturation of T-N, T-P was observed IV~V class during all seasons. Particularly, T-N concenturation peaks in spring, while was lowered in other seasons. In the lake, high concenturation of T-N, T-P bring about Eutrophication when algae was growth causing various physico-chemical changes in the water. It is suggested that the water quality management strategies need to be applied for each lake.

  • An analysis of groundwater quality is significant for monitoring and managing water contamination and groundwater system. For the purpose of those, the geochemical characteristics of groundwater were studied over the concern for water quality, water type and origin of nitrate nitrogen. Total colony counts were detected in 11 out of 20 samples, and the average value was 31.73 CFU/ml. Range and average of NO3-N concentrations were 0.9~24.0 mg/L and 8.3 mg/L. All groundwater types were found to be Ca2+-HCO3-. The range and average of NO3-N were 0.2~17.4 mg/L and 8.7 mg/L, and those of δ15N were 1.7~8.9‰, and 5.0‰. Careful consideration is required for evaluating the origin of nitrogen when NO3-N concentration is low. In general, noticeable difference between rockbed and alluvial water was not found. The ranges of nitrate origins by chemical fertilizer, livestock manure and domestic sewage, and natural soil were 29.6~76.4%, 14.2~58.9% and 2.6~7.0%, and the average values of those were 57.4%, 37.4%, and 5.3%, respectively. Origin of nitrate was affected by more chemical fertilizer than the other parameters. Rockbed water was more affected by chemical fertilizer than alluvial water.

  • A total of 52 sampling sites were selected in the stream network of the upper Paldang watershed (e.g. Kyonan, Gapyeong, Jojong, Chengmi, Bockha, Yanghwa and Heuk streams). Over the time period of April 2007-February 2008, 1820 samples were collected and analyzed for physico-chemical variables of the upper watershed in order to investigate spatio-temporal water quality variation in particular the relationship with land use. Although temporal variations of water quality in each stream were similar and were significantly influenced by flow, spatial variations in each stream varied as physico-chemical characteristics of upper watershed. As a result of regression analysis, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (T-N), and Total phosphorus (T-P) concentration were the most significantly and positively associated with people population density. It is necessary to manage not only water quality but also land use of upper watershed and flow flux.

  • This study investigates weekday/weekend characteristics of $PM_{10}$ concentration and chemical composition of water-soluble ions in Busan in the spring of 2013. Contribution rate of water-soluble ions to PM10 concentration in weekday/weekend were 41.5% and 38.5%, respectively. Contribution rate of SO_4{^{2-}}$ to total ion mass in weekday/weekend were 30.4% and 33.8%, respectively. Contribution rate of total inorganic water-soluble ions in PM10 in weekday/weekend were 42.2% and 39.1% (mean 41.4%), respectively. $[NO_3{^-}/SO_4{^{2-}}]$ ratio in weekday/weekend were 1.01 and 0.97(mean 0.99), respectively, which indicated that weekday ratio was higher. Contribution rate of sea salts and $Cl^-/Na^+$ ratio in PM10 in weekday/weekend were 8.1% and 7.6%, 0.37% and 0.41%, respectively. This research will help understand chemical composition of water-soluble ions during the weekday/weekend and will be able to measure the contribution level of artificial anthropogenic source on urban air.

  • The wetting dynamics of water droplets dispensed on the surface of dry and wet hydrophilic membranes were investigated experimentally from a microscale point of view. By using a high-speed, white-beam x-ray microimaging (WXMI) synchrotron, consecutive images displaying the dynamic motions of the droplets were acquired. Through analyzing the characteristics observed, it was found that the dry hydrophilic membrane showed local hydrophobicity at a certain point during the absorption process with apparent contact angles greater than 90. While on the other hand, the apparent contact angles of a water droplet absorbing into the wet membrane remained less than 90 and showed total hydrophilicity. The observations and interpretation of characteristics that affect the contact, wetting, recoiling, and dynamic behaviors of droplets are significant for controlling liquid droplet impingement in a desired manner.
