  • The effect of esterified starch as surface sizing agent for inkjet printing paper has been evaluated and compared with oxidized starch. Also the influence of various additives including cationic poly-DADMAC, stearic acrylic copolymer, calcium chloride, and GCC was examined. Results showed that starch ester gave higher ink density than oxidized starch. Addition of poly-DADMAC improved water fastness. In general, low molecular weight poly-DADMAC performed better than high molecular weight one, and it was attributed to the fact that it gave more uniform film forming characteristics in surface sizing. Use of styrene acrylic acid copolymer increased hydrophobicity of the paper surface, but it did not increase the ink density. Use of GCC and calcium chloride had only marginal effect on printing quality.

  • The theophylline imprinted membrane was prepared by a wet phase inversion method. Theophylline was implanted during copolymerization of acrylonitrile with acrylic acid or implanted in the dimethyl sulfoxide solution containing10 wt% copolymer, p(AN-co-AA). Rolling the glass plate, on which the copolymer solution was cast, in water removed the sponge layer and thus made the membrane symmetric. The adsorption selectivity of the membrane toward template molecule was increased with the coagulation temperature of the membrane and the initial concentration of the theophylline and caffeine mixture.

  • Molecularly imprinting technology is an effective method to prepare a synthetic material with a high selectivity to a target molecule. In this study, a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized via UV-polymerization using theophylline and UV-curable polyester-acrylate resin as a template molecule and a crosslinker, respectively. To elucidate the effects of functional monomer type on the performance of the MIP, each MIP was synthesized using mathacrylic acid, acrylic acid, and acryl amide as functional monomers. Each MIP showed higher rebinding capacity to theophylline than its corresponding non-imprinted polymer (NIP). The MIP synthesized using mathacrylic acid as a functional monomer showed the highest rebinding capacity to theophylline. The selectivity of the MIP was investigated using a solution with caffeine having a very similar structure to theophylline. The binding performance of the MIP to theophylline decreased when distilled water was used as a solvent, which has more polarity than chloroform.

  • Blending films having enhanced water-resistance and barrier properties were prepared using the mixtures of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solution and poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) dispersed in water. Thermal-mechanical properties, contact angles, water-vapor transmission rates (WVTR) and oxygen transmission rates $(O_2TR)$ were measured with the content of EAA of blending films, and their water-resistance was evaluated. The tensile strength of the films was found to be $9.16{\sim}11.75\;kg/mm^2$ which showed no significant difference compared with that of PVA, and the hardness increased with the content of EAA. The glass transition temperature and melting temperature of the blending films were slightly improved. The film prepared with PVA/EAA (= 90/10), of which the swelling and solubility were measured to be 109 and 0%, respectively, showed improved water-resistance. The WVTR and $O_2TR$ for the PET film (thickness $50\;{\mu}m$) coated with PVA/EAA (= 90/10) film (thickness $2.5\;{\mu}m$) were measured to be $9.1\;g/m^2/day$ and $2.0\;cc/m^2/day$, respectively.

  • poly(acrylic acid)(PAA)-poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) membranes have been prepared by crosslinking reaction between the carboxylic acid groups of PAA and the hydroxylic groups of PVA. In the measurements of the swelling and preferential sorption of the membranes, sorption behaviors of the membranes in pure water, pure acetic acid and a mixture of them have been investigated, respectively. From the measurements of the preferential sorption in 90wt% acetic acid of aqueous mixture, the sorption of water component was found to be more enhanced at high PAA content in the membrane than that of acetic acid component due to the interaction of water with acetic acid. The sorption behavior and the degree of crosslinking influenced competitively the permeation behavior of permeants. Permeation behavior of perrecants through the membranes was analyzed by using permeation activation energies which had been obtained from the Arrhenius plots of fluxes.

  • Crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes were prepared at various crosslinking temperatures using poly(acrylic acid-co-maleic acid) (PAM) containing different PAM contents. The thermal properties of these PVA/PAM membranes prepared at various reaction temperatures were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The proton conductivity and methanol permeability of PVA/PAM membranes were then investigated as PAM content was varied from 3 to 13 wt%. It was found that the proton and methanol transport were dependent on PAM content in their function both as crosslinking agent and as donor of hydrophilic -COOH groups. Both these properties decreased monotonously with increasing PAM concentration. The proton conductivities of these PVA/PAM membranes were in the range from $10^{-3}\;to\;10^{-2}S/cm$ and the methanol permeabilities from $10^{-7}\;to\;10^{-6}cm^{2}/sec$. In addition, the effect of operating temperature up to $80^{\circ}C$ on ion conductivity was examined for three selected membranes: 7, 9 and 11 wt% PAM membranes. Ion conductivity increased with increasing operating temperature and showed and S/cm at $80^{\circ}C$, respectively. The effects of crosslinking and ionomer group concentration were also examined in terms of water content, ion exchange capacity (IEC), and fixed ion concentration. In addition, the number of water molecules per ionomer site was calculated using both water contents and IEC values. With overall consideration for all the properties measured in this study, $7{\sim}9\;wt%$ PAM membrane prepared at $140^{\circ}C$ exhibited the best performance. These characteristics of PVA/PAM membranes are desirable in applications related to the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC).

  • A novel superabsorbent composite was prepared by intercalation polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) in the presence of montmorillonite (MMT), using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and $N,N'$-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross linker. The superabsorbent composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Maximum absorbency of the composite in distilled water and 0.9% sodium chloride solution was 722 and 108 g/g, respectively. The composite was used for removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Maximum amount of adsorption for $Ni^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ was 211.0, 159.6 and 1646.0 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption was in accordance with both Langmuir and Freundlich model. The composite could be regenerated and reused in wastewater treatment.

  • The acrylic coating emulsions were prepared by the emulsion polymerization to protect the surface of steel plate from the corrosion chemicals like acid, base and salt water. MMA(methyl methacrylate), styrene, BA(butyl acrylate), and 2-HEMA(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) were used as monomer. KPS(potassium persulfate) and SBS(sodium bisulfite) as redox initiator and SDBS(sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate) as emulsifier were used on the emulsion polymerization reaction. The most stable in-situ coating was obtained when 10% of MMA was added. Both particle size and quantity in emulsion were decreased as increasing the mount of SDBS. the most stable prepared coating emulsion with polyisocyanate crosslinker showed very high anticorrosion properties on the coated steel layer to salt water, whereas no significant improvement of anticorrosion property to acdic and basic condition it showed.

  • In this study, free swell index of betonite was examined in several regeants; distilled water, leachate, seawater and 3% NaCl solution. Free swell index values of bontonite to be added Poly(acrlylic acid), PYA(Polyvinyl Alcohol) or SCMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose) were evaluated and compared. From this, it was confirmed that hydraulic conductivities of GCL in seawater were examined and the hydraulic conductivities of GCL in seawater were compared to those in distilled water. The average values of free swell indices of bentonite were decreased in order of distilled water>leachate>seawater. It was shown that no significant differences were occurred for free swell index between seawater and 3% NaCl solution. For bentonite to be added PVA, the other reagents except distilled water didn't affect increase of swelling. Swelling properties of bentonite to be added SCMC were improved except 3% NaCl solution.
