The effects of the processing mixture of pig manure and various organic wastes on the growth, cast production of earthworm, and conversion of organic matter to earthworm tissues by vermicomposting. The substances used in this experiments were sawdust, rice hull, coffee waste, brewery waste, litters, turfgrass cutting residues, rice bran, vegetable wastes and rice straw and were mixed with pig manure at a ratios of 50:50 (v/v), and pig manure 100% (control), respectively. The highest values of growth parameters, cast production and conversion efficiency of organic matter to earthworm tissues were obtained at the mixtures of pig manure with coffee waste, it may due to the favourable diet conditions to process with pig manure by vermicomposting. But, all of the earthworm died in the pig manure 100% (control) and pig manure with vegetable wastes treatments by vermicomposting was impossible in this experiment. The vermicast contained a higher values of total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable cations and cation exchange capacity than their parent materials with increased availability of nutrients and improved physicochemical properties.

Objectives of this research were to reclaim the coal mine overburdens using the lime waste cake from the soda ash production by stabilizing the overburden slopes, introducing neutralizing the AMD from runoff and leachate in an attempt find the sink to dispose the lime wastes and alleviate the environmental problems caused by the closed coal mines. The pH changes of the runoff and leachate collected in the tanks at the end of the experimental plots, averaged over measurements from April to August, indicated that the runoff pH of the coal overburden was 4.3 but increased significantly to the ranges of 6.7 to 7.1 with treatments of tile calcites and lime wastes. This might be related with the decreases in Fe concentrations in the runoff and leachate from the coal overburdens. The Fe concentrations in tile runoff seemed to increase with the amounts of precipitation. Results demonstrated that the amounts of lime wastes at 25% of the lime requirement were sufficient for neutralizing the acidic coal overburden. Either layering between the coal waste and topsoil or mixing with coal overburdens could be adopted as the lime waste treatment method. The lime wastes from the soda ash production might have a potential to be recycled for the reclamation of the abandoned coal mines to alleviate the environmental problems associated with coal mine waste.
This study focuses on the feasibility of bio-gas production using anaerobic digestion by measuring methane generation and biodegradability through the BMP test of industrial organic wastes. Organic wastes consist of entrails of pigs and organic residues of rumen generated from slaughter houses, wastewater sludge from slaughter waste water, fish offal and residues of vegetables from public wholesale markets, and wastewater sludge from the process of wastewater treatment in paper mill. The cumulative methane production by BMP test ranges from 149.3 ml/g-VS to 406.6 ml/g-VS and this is similar to methane generation of the normal wastewater sludge and food waste. As a result of measurement of biodegradability, wastewater sludge (S1 ~ S4) is low, ranging from 27.1% to 58.9 % and organic residues of rumen (G1) is low at 49.6 %. In conclusion, it turned out that raising the hydrolysis by various pre-treatments is necessary in order to produce bio-gas by using industrial organic wastes.

There is an increasing interest in the use of electrochemical methods for the food waste treatment. The technologies using the electrochemical method provide ideal tools for approaching industrial and food wastes problems. Unlike other chemical treatments, the electrochemical systems do not make the volume of the secondary waste increase. The electrochemical methods can be operated with electrochemical apparatus and inorganic agent allow selective separation and recovery and even quieter than others. This study concerns design factors, electrode construction and wastewater treatment process of the electrochemical apparatus. The experiment of color, COD and BOD removal is much effective in using electrochemical method with ultrasonication and ozonation.
To achieve demineralization of crab shell waste by chemical and biological treatments, lactic acid and lactic acid bacterium were applied. In 5.0 and $10\%$ lactic acid, pH rapidly decreased from 6.8 to 4.2 and from 4.5 to 2.4 at day 3, respectively, and thereafter the pH remained at an almost constant level. In a $10\%$ lactic acid bacterium inoculum, pH lowered to 4.6 at day 5. Relative residual ash content rapidly decreased to 49.1 and $16.4\%$ in 5 and $10\%$ lactic acid treatments, respectively, for the initial 12 h. In 2.5, 5 and $10\%$ lactic acid bacterium inoculums, relative residual ash content rapidly decreased to 55.2, 40.9 and $44.7\%$, respectively, on the first day. Residual dry masses were 76.4, 67.8 and $46.6\%$ in 2.5, 5 and $10\%$ lactic acid treatments, respectively, for the initial 12 h. After a one-time exchange of the lactic acid solution, in the $5.0\%$ lactic acid treatment, residual dry mass rapidly decreased from 66.0 to $41.4\%$. In 2.5, 5 and $10\%$ lactic acid bacterium inoculums, residual dry masses decreased to 67.6, 57.4 and $59.6\%$ respectively, on the first day. Protein contents after demineralization ranged from $51.3{\sim}54.7\%$ in the chemical treatments and decreased to $32.3\%$ in the lactic acid fermentation process. A negative relationship was shown between pH and demineralization rate in lactic acid and lactic acid bacterium treatments. These results suggest that lactic acid fermentation can be an alternative for demineralization of crab shells, even though the rate and efficiency of the demineralization is lower than the chemical treatment.
Animal manure is produced annually 43.7 million tonnes in Korea. Among them, about 85.6 % are used as compost or liquid fertilizer to the agricultural land. The animal manure can be effectively utilized by mixing with organic byproducts that result in generation of biogas from anaerobic co-digestion process. This study aimed to optimize the content of total solid materials (TS) and determine the effect of organic byproduct on the co-digestion process. Prior to the byproduct treatments, determination of proper content of TS was conducted by controlling at 5 or 10 %. For the byproduct treatments, swine manure without adding the byproduct was used for control treatment, and swine manure mixed with either corn silage or kitchen waste was used for other treatments. Volume of biomethane ($CH_4$) generated from digested materials was quantified before and after byproduct treatments. In result, a 1.4-fold higher biomethane, about 0.556 L/$L{\cdot}d$, was produced when the content of TS was controlled at 10 %, compared at 5 %, about 0.389 L/$L{\cdot}d$. When the swine manure was mixed with the corn silage or kitchen waste, a two-fold higher biomethane was produced, about 1.theand 1.0heL/$L{\cdot}d$, respectively, compared to the control treatment. Biogas production from organic dry matter (odm) was a3, 362eand 2h6 L/kg odm${\cdot}$d for control, corn silage, and kitchen waste treatment, respectively. The lower biogas production in the treatment of kitchen waste than that of corn silage is associated with its relatively high odm contents. The methane concentration during the whole process ranged from 40 at the beginning to 70 % at the end of process for both the control and kitchen waste treatments, and ranged from 52 to 70 % for the corn silage treatment. Hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) concentration ranged between 350 and 500 ppm. All the integrated results indicate that addition of organic byproduct into animal manure can double the generation of biogas from anaerobic fermentation process.
An experiment was conducted to evaluate feeding values of food and other organic wastes, and to determine their dietary effects on performance and carcass yield in ducks. A total of 156 meat type ducklings at the age of 25 days were housed in 12 pens and assigned to 4 treatments, in which the birds were fed for 21 days. One of 4 diets, commercial duck feed, raw food waste (RFW), fermented food waste(FFW) and mixture of 50% RFW and 50% FFW (R+FFW). Feed consumption was significantly higher (p<0.05) in the RFW groups. Body weight gain showed no significant differences between the control and other treatments. The feed consumption ratio was significantly higher in the RFW groups (p<0.05) than that of the other groups. Carcass yield was significantly higher in the R+FFW groups (p<0.05) than the other groups. The weight of liver per live body weight showed significant differences among the treatment groups (p<0.05). The length of intestine was significantly different from those of the treated groups(p<0.05).
A total of thirty-six gilts $(24.78{\pm}1.39kg)$ were employed for 38 days (Exp. 1), and twenty-four gilts $(46.50{\pm}1.90kg)$ for 43 days (Exp. 2) to determine growth performance and carcass characteristics in pigs fed dried food waste (DFW). Pigs were allocated by dietary treatments: 0%, 20% and 40% DFW. For nutrient digestibility, twelve female pigs $(50.20{\pm}0.52kg)$ were used in individual pens to collect feces. Food wastes were collected from restaurants and apartment complex areas and dried in a drum-type dryer at $115{\pm}2{^{\circ}C}$. Experimental diets for feeding trials were formulated to contain 3,400 kcal DE/kg and 17% crude protein. The tested DFW contained 2,858 kcal DE/kg, 25.0% crude protein, 17.3% crude fat, 1.37% Ca, 1.28% P, and 3.28% NaCl. As compared to crude protein content, the limiting amino acids (i.e., 0.90% lysine and 0.52% methionine) were low. The digestibilities of energy, ash, calcium and phosphorus in the DFW were generally lower than those in the grower diets, but the digestibilities of crude protein and crude fat were higher in DFW than the grower diet. Feeding DFW in pigs had a linear (p<0.01) effect on ADG and feed/gain as the inclusion levels of DFW were increased (Exp. 1). The ADG of pigs fed 40% DFW was also poorer (p<0.05) than that fed the control diet (Exp. 2). Carcass characteristics in terms of backfat and dressing percentage were not affected by dietary treatments. In conclusion, it seems that the optimal dietary inclusion level of the DFW is about 20% in the diet for growing-finishing pigs.
The growth of leaves in field-grown head lettuce(cv. Urake) was compared after conventional application of N-P-K fertilizer or after application of various dilutions of livestock waste solution. Plants treated with livestock waste solution diluted 25 times (Ef. 25) or 50 times (Ef. 50) had greater growth than that for any other treatment. The number of leaves was greater with Ef. 25 than that with other treatments, although the increase was not statistically significant. Total head yield increased by fertigation with livestock waste solution compared to yield resulting from conventional fertilization. Plant tissue weight was increased according to the increase in concentration of applied livestock waste solution. The soil chemical properties, pH, electrical conductivity, $NH_4^+-N$, NO$_3$-N, available P exchangeable Ca and Mg, all increased with the increased application of livestock waste solution. In conclusion, fertigation of the dilute livestock waste solution on the range of Ef. 25 to Ef. 50 could improve yield and quality in head lettuce.
Waste aluminum dross is a major waste in the aluminum scrap smelters and its components are mostly alumina and remained metallic aluminum. In the process to extract the remained aluminum from the waste dross by leaching with sodium hydroxide solution, residue is generated and its main component is alumina. This residue could be recycled into ceramic materials such as alumina castable refractories by going through a series of treatments such as washing, drying and roasting. In this study, a pilot plant was constructed and tested to demonstrate the developed technology. One thousand tons of waste aluminum dross could be processed, and about seven hundred tons of ceramic materials produced in the demonstration line. From the test run of the pilot plant, although it was confirmed that the developed technology could be applied to commercialization, several technical improvements were found to be necessary for reducing impurities such as Na, Fe and for reforming drying equipment.
