The performance of the evaporation facility of low radioactive liquid waste is studied experimentally. The evaporation facility comprises storage pools, feeding pumps, evaporation units with 1,040 sheets of cloth and air handling units. As the results of this study, it is found that the evaporation rate increases as the waste feed rate increases, the relative humidity of induced air decreases, and the air velocity increases. The modified Dalton's evaporation equation derived from experimental data is $E_h=(0.0168+0.0141V){\Delta}H$. The optimum operating conditions of the evaporation facility are waste feed rate of $4.5./hr.m^2$ and air velocity of 1.47m/sec.

In order to confirm European packaging waste statistics, this study was investigated annual variability of packaging waste generated, target of recovery and recycling rate for packaging waste and recycling rate of European countries based on Eurostat database. Eurostat is regional society statistics organization designated by European community to distribute development, production and European statistics. From 2005 to 2013, paper and paperboard packaging were generated the largest amount among the total amount of packaging waste generated during the period and the share of main packaging materials were generally constant among the packaging materials. In addition, European Union member countries have established target for the recycling rate and recycling rate for packaging waste which has been well maintained by most EU countries since the 2008 directive was enacted. The recycling rate for whole packaging waste such as glass, paper and paperboard, metal, plastic, wood continues to increase in Europe. In this study, Europe packaging waste statistics were organized and analyzed as yearly transformation of Europe packaging waste occurrence and disposal, recycling rate and recovery rate target value of Europe countries and recycling rate of each country in Europe base on centralized Eurostat database. Moreover GDP reduction were also confirmed due to trend changes and indirect impacts such as economic slump by packaging waste and recycling.

For recycling of waste foundry sands, researchers recently try to recycle them rather than depend on reclamation, and are studying on how to combine waste foundry sands with cement and use them for various kinds of construction material as the effective recycling method of waste foundry sand. In this research, The ways to find the proper replacement rate of waste foundry sands and to make use of them were suggested through the experiments on the range to apply waste foundry sands with two levels of 1:3 mixture rate of W/C 43% and 50%. The research result showed that in terms of liquidity as the characteristic of unhardened mortar, as the replacement rate of waste foundry sands increased, its flow tended to decrease. The amount of air also displayed a similar tendency to that of liquidity in that the higher the replacement rate of waste foundry sands became, the lower it became. With regard to the solidity trait of hardened mortar, it increased when the waste foundry sands were replaced more, and the replacement of waste foundry sands caused increased initial solidity. As for the amount of water permeated and that of water absorbed as the water tight proofing properties, the amount of permeated water was proved to decrease because of the gap recharge effect by the fine powder of waste foundry sands, and the replacement of waste foundry sands in the structures requiring watertightness is concluded to be very effective.
Radioactive waste should be solidified before being disposed of in the repository to eliminate liquidity or dispersibility. Cement is a widely used solidifying media for radioactive waste, and cement solidified waste should satisfy the minimum compressive strength of the waste acceptance criteria of a radioactive repository. Although the compressive strength of waste should be measured by the test method provided by the waste acceptance criteria, the method differs depending on the operating repository of different countries. Considering the measured compressive strength changes depending on test conditions, the effect of test conditions should be analyzed to avoid overestimation or underestimation of the compressive strength during disposal. We selected test conditions such as the height-to-diameter ratio, loading rate, and porosity as the main factors affecting the compressive strength of cement solidified radioactive waste. Owing to the large variance in measured compressive strength, the effects of the test conditions were analyzed via statistical analyses using parametric and nonparametric methods. The results showed that the test condition of the lower loading rate, with a height-to-diameter ratio of two, reflected the actual cement content well, while the porosity showed no correlation. The compressive strength assessment method that reflects the large variance of strengths was suggested.

Food waste causes various economic losses and environmental pollution problems such as soil pollution and groundwater pollution. Food waste has been used as a resource in various forms and has been used mostly for feed and composting. This study compared microalgal nutrient medium (BG-11) with food waste compost to determine the possibility of using it as a culture medium. Scenedesmus quadricauda was isolated and cultured in an eutrophic reservoir and incubated for 3 days in distilled water before laboratory use. Food waste compost was produced in two food waste processing facilities, and hot water was extracted in the laboratory to be used for microalgae cultivation. The growth curve of the microalgae was analyzed based on the Chl-a concentration measured during the experiment, and the growth rate of the microalgae grown in the food waste compost was compared with the growth rate of those grown in the nutrient medium. Food waste compost showed a similar growth rate to that of the nutrient medium, and there was a difference depending on the manufacturing facility. The growth of microalgae in such food waste was further amplified when trace elements were added and showed better growth than that of the nutrient media. Particularly, when trace elements were added, the growth rate increased, and the growth period was further extended. Therefore, food waste compost can be sufficiently utilized as a microalgal culture medium, and if trace elements are added, it is considered that microalgae can be more effectively cultured compared to the existing nutrient medium.
The municipal solid waste (MSW) management system in one of the Class II Indian cities i.e. Rishikesh was studied and analysed to identify the key issues in solid waste management in the city. A total of 329 solid waste samples from 47 households were collected to characterize the household solid waste (HSW). The average (HSW) generation rate was 0.26 kg/c/d and it was composed of organic waste (57.3%), plastics (14%), paper (10.9%), and glass and ceramic (1.3%) and other materials (16.5%). There was an inverse relationship between household waste generation rate and family size (p < 0.05). The MSW management system practiced in Rishikesh is unsound. There is no waste segregation at source, no provisions of composting and no recycling by formal sector. The collection and transportation of waste is inadequate and inappropriate. Collected waste is dumped in open dumping site without scientific management. Following are some recommendations for developing a sustainable solid waste management system in Rishikesh city: (1) sensitize people for segregation at source; (2) promote reduction, reuse and recycling of wastes; (3) promote community based composting; (4) provision for 100% door to door collection and; (5) formalize the informal sectors such as rag pickers and recycling industries.
This research was conducted to estimate waste rates of 69 food items after pre-preparation and amounts of food wastes disposed and it's reduction effect by education in some institutional foodservices for reduction of the food wastes. The result are as follows: 1. The waste rates were 55.40% for sweet corn, 5.73% for potatoes, 19.14% for sweet potatoes, and 33.47% for chestnuts. 2. The waste rates of fruits were 0.21-49.36%. Food items with over 40% waste rate were banana, watermelon, and pineapple. 3. The waste rates of vegetables were 1.14-52.90%. The number of foods with under 10% waste rate were 14 items(red pepper, green pepper, chard, and so on), 10-20% was 9 items(perilla leaf, chinese cabbage, ginger root, and so on), 20-30% was 5 items(root of chinese bellflower, garlic, radish-leaves, burdock, welsh onion-large type), 30-40% was 3 items(shepherd's purse, head lettuce, kale) and over 40% was 3 items(water dropwort, crown daisy, mallow). 4. The waste rates were 24.30% in chicken, 9.53-13.79% in eggs, and 9.30-55.32% in fishes. The waste rates of vegetables and fishes were higher than those of other food groups. 5. There were significantly different in amount of food wastes disposed (g/person/day) to institutional foodservices (hospital>industrial institution> Korean restaurant>elementary school). The amount of food wastes disposed, especially amount in pre-preparation phase, after education for reduction of food wastes was significantly reduced. Since these study results show significant deviations in food waste rates and education effect, there should be more studies for standard waste rates of each food and systematic education method for reduction of food wastes.

Decommissioning of nuclear power plants generates a large amount of radioactive waste in a short period. Moreover, Radioactive waste has various forms including a large volumes of metal, concrete, and solid waste. The disposal of decommissioning waste using 200 L drums is inefficient in terms of economics, work efficiency, and radiation safety. Therefore, The Korea Radioactive Waste Agency is developing large containers for the packaging, transportation, and disposal of decommissioning waste. Assessing disposability considering the characteristics of the radioactive waste and facility, convenience of operation, and safety of workers is necessary. In this study, the exposure dose rate of workers during the disposal of new containers was evaluated using Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport code. Six normal and four abnormal scenarios were derived for the assessment of the dose rate in a near surface disposal facility operation. The results showed that the calculated dose rates in all normal scenarios were lower than the direct exposure dose limitation of workers in the safety analysis report. In abnormal scenarios, the work hours with dose rates below 20 mSv·y-1 were calculated. The results of this study will be useful in establishing the optimal radiation work conditions.

An electric steam boiler equipped with a condensate recovery system, which stores the condensate generated after using steam in steam washers, steam cookers, steam irons, and steam cleaners in a condensate tank and supplies compressed air to the condensate tank so that the condensate is recovered to the boiler by the pressure of the compressed air, was studied. In the results of this study, the heat energy balance between the quantity of the heat generated by the non-metallic surface heating element and the quantity of the heat absorbed by the water was good in a range of ${\pm}5%$. In addition, the heat transfer rate increased in proportion to the electric power of the surface heating element heater, the waste heat energy was normally recovered by the recovery of the condensate of the steam boiler equipped with the high compression waste heat recovery system, and the recovery rate of the waste heat exhibited 23%.
The experiment has investigated the effects of blending rate of waste rockwool in nursery media on growth of Marygold 'Yellow boy' plug seedlings. A commercial plug medium containing 10% zeolite, 10% vermiculite, 5% perlite, 10% peatmoss and 65% cocopeat was used as the control, and the other media compounded with 10% of zeolite, vermiculite, perlite and peatmoss and 10, 30, and 50% of waste rock-wool. There was not significant difference in germination rate ot Marygold between treatments. Plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter and leaf area were higher in commercial plug medium and compound nursery media containing 50% of waste rockwool than 30 or 10% of waste rockwool. Fresh weight and dry weight of shoot and root increased in the treatment of commercial plug medium and the medium of 50% waste rockwool than 10 and 30% of waste rockwool. These results suggested the possibility of utilization of waste rockwool for medium components of plug seedlings.
