As the meaning of dictionary terminology, scum refers to a layer of impurities that accumulates at the surface of a liquid. In papermaking process, scum indicates the floated solid waste generated by a flotation process during the primary wastewater treatment. In this study, different kinds of stocks and scums collected from newspaper, liner, tissue and fine paper were analysed in details. The purpose of this study was firstly to demonstrate the composition characteristics of different sources of scum, secondly the analysis of environmental hazardous materials, and thirdly the evaluation of reutilization ability of fibrous materials from collected scum. As mentioned the meaning of solid waste, scum was actually differ from the waste sludge in sources, compositions and recycling abilities. In the same manner of waste paper, the sludge which is generated within onsite of papermaking processes would be reused as a raw material. The general compositions of scum from waste water were mainly inorganic ash materials, fine fibre fractions, recycled fibre debries, and ink particles. If the scum is able to reuse as fibrous additives in papermaking process, it could contribute to the savings of running costs in both the subsidiaries of fibrous material and the solid waste treatment with even small quantity.
Indonesian Ministry of Environment estimates that each year 170 cities and regencies in Indonesia produce 45,764,354.30 $m^3$ or approximately 11,441,091.08 ton of solid waste. Unfortunately, unsustainable management system has created a severe waste problem, hazardous to health and environment. This paper deals with the problem and offers some solutions. They are 3R (Reduce Reuse and Recycle), waste-to-energy concept and landfill gas (LFG) utilization. While 3R policy has been adopted by the government, the remaining two technologies are still dormant. Thus the paper provides a complete yet compact analysis of technology, economics, and environment aspect of waste-to-energy and LFG. Given the facts of waste production and management in Indonesia, the purpose is to encourage Government of Indonesia and other stake holders (including international community) to explore and exploit this potential. Potential of reducing waste negative externality while receiving extra revenue. Two bird with a stone.

The chemical composition and thermal, crystal characterization of oak mushroom waste were investigated in comparison with those normal oak wood for utilization of cellulose from oak mushroom waste. The oak mushroom waste contained a higher percentage of ash, and hot water extractives than oak wood. This results indicated that the materials inside the body are easily decomposed during the oak mushroom cultivation. The lower percentage of holocellulose and a-cellulose of oak mushroom waste caused by fungal decomposition too. Whereas, the thermal decomposition behavior and crystallinity of oak mushroom waste was similar to that of normal oak wood, which indicated that the cellulose characterization of oak mushroom waste is resistant to fungal decomposition. In additionally, a degree of polymerization of oak mushroom waste must be investigate for examination of cellulose crystalline characterization, especially.

To evaluate the quality of waste paper used for the manufacture of linerboard, the types of papers and foreign materials in compressed waste paper currently used were investigated. The recycled fibers were obtained from printing paper, newspaper, wrapping paper, white coated paperboard and corrugated container. Their fibers were observed by using a microscope, and the mechanical properties of the recycled papers manufactured from the recycled fibers were investigated. The compressed wastepaper was composed of 54% paperboard, 20% printing paper, and 20% newsprint. The content of foreign materials was about 4%, showing higher contents compared to 1% of foreign substances provided by Korea paper manufacturers' association. The types of foreign materials were various, which include vinyls, plastics, metals, woods, styrofoams, and cloths. Sound fibers were generally observed in the recycled fibers of printing papers and wrapping paper. The recycled fibers of white coated board, corrugated container and newsprint showed to be generally damaged. The whiteness of each recycled fiber were highly affected by pulp bleaching and ink-particle mixing conditions. The values of breaking length and burst index were lower than those for corrugating medium and liner board specified in KS. Although the anatomical characteristics of recycled fibers varied, their strengths appeared to be similar. This result may be explained by the use of non-deinked fiber.
In 1987, The Brundtland Report defined a sustainable development as the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This is the concept that we should cling to, to preserve natural resources of the present for the future generation. With this concept in mind, this paper criticized that the current waste management policy has been neglecting resource preservation aspect of waste management policy while giving too much emphasis on reducing waste generation. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to analyze how waste management policy can affect preservation of natural resources, and to investigate policy alternatives that can reduce both the volume of waste generated and the amount of natural resources that need to be consumed in the production process. The study was conducted based on the literature survey and system dynamics simulation. Borrowing Randers and Meadows's solid waste model with some modification of parameter and variables, this paper simulate several policy alternatives to figure out the most effective waste management policy set that can meet the need of the present without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs. Main concern was how to link waste management policy with resource management policy that can lead to minimization of waste generation and resource consumption.

The objective of this research paper is to discuss the waste coffee residue disposal and its environmental effects on the environment. As we know, coffee is one of the most demand and swallowed beverages in the world, which leads to large quantities of solid waste. Which can be toxic and a lot of environmental problems occur. In developing countries, there is a lack of proper coffee waste residue management. The coffee beans and residues contain several organic compounds. The wastewater from coffee industry emitted several pollutants (highly concentrated) and it contaminates the soil, ground waters, aquatic life, and also human health. Hence it is essential to treat the coffee waste residues. Mean while, oyster shell waste and its disposal also a big environmental challenge in the coastal regions of southeast Korea. In this paper, we focused the treatment of coffee waste residue with oyster shell waste powder. Primarily, oyster shells are calcinated at higher temperatures and investigated the calcined CaO powder as an anti microbic agent to the bacteria presented in coffee waste residues. We successfully applied calcium oxide from oyster shell waste, as an antimicrobic agent.

The waste bunker usually consists of waste entrance zone and waste pit. In this paper, the distributions of air flow, $NH_3$ concentration and $H_2S$ concentration in a waste bunker were investigated to prevent an odor generated in a waste pit from dispersing to the waste entrance zone by numerical method. Four cases were considered such that 1) the waste incinerators is operated, 2) the waste incinerators is stopped, 3) the waste incinerator is operated and the direction of a supply diffuser is $45^{\circ}$ upward, 4) the waste incinerator is stopped and the direction of a supply diffuser is $45^{\circ}$ upward. In case of 1), the fresh air from the waste entrance zone is exhausted smoothly to the main exhaust grill of the waste pit. It means that an odor dispersion to the waste entrance zone will not occur. However in case of 2), the induction of fresh air is so small and the supply air with an odor in waste pit can flow to the waste entrance zone. Therefore, an odor will be dispersed to the waste entrance zone. This paper shows the solution that the supply diffuser with the direction of $45^{\circ}$ upward is chosen. As a result in case of 3) and 4), an odor dispersion to the waste entrance zone does not occurred and on odor is exhausted smoothly to the auxiliary exhaust grill.
The purpose of this study was to survey the trends of waste products in schools, its gathering and disposal, identification of problems and to analyze its disposal. Moreover, this study was aimed at basic suggestions about the establishment and plans of waste environmental education. 98 public primary and secondary schools were surveyed in Seoul during the month of March and April, 1991. Information was collected from each educational association by random sampling. Questionaries were used for this survey. To understand the disposal status of school waste and its reforms, this study surveyed the amount of waste by products, their origin and analyzed the disposal by type, one number of schools and teachers involved. The dump sited and disposal methods of school waste, its problems, and the status of school waste educations were researched, and ideal disposal methods and plans for waste education were suggested. The results were as follows. 1. The School's trash was produced by followings: paper, vinyle plastics, food, woods, metals, ceramics, glass, bottles, and ash from the heating system. The biggest cause of the school's waste as shown by the survey was a lack of environmental awareness(39.8%). The second biggest was the use of a one time use of disposable paper products(27.6%). 2. Waste collection by different grade levels were proven to be important but as you move from elementary to high school, the waste collecting operation decreased, in this connection between the students and waste collection itself it was significant on the other hand the teachers were not working as significant variables. 3. Of the school that collected waste 69.5 percent of the schools separately grouped common waste and recyclable waste. 25 schools(42.4%) received improvement on their environmental awareness of trash collection through this method. 4. From the number of disposal sites in surveyed schools, it was determined that the education of the necessity for separation of waste was performed in vain and accordingly the should require a real education in the future. 5. Regarding the method of disposal of waste the survey indicated that the #1 method of disposal was partial burning and the remains carried to a dump site by others(35,7%). In elementary schools the entire waste was taken by individuals to a dump site (33.3%). In high schools partial burning and then transported by individuals #1 in our survey(50%). 6. Relative to the problem of the treatment to waste, the emission of smoke from the burning was considered to be the #1 priority in our survey (62.3%) the problem of trash collection being delayed was 52.1%(1in our survey). 7. The present situation of environmental education of waste us lacking. Under present circumstances, the practice of public announcements for improvement and waste-paper collection has been going on vigorously but lacking in education as to the preparation of compositions for students the themes of public exhibitions, the organizing of voluntary associations should be part of the education system to reinforce student's awareness of proper waste disposal. 8. The most economical alternative for disposal was recycling usable waste or combustible material through a variety of education we can therefore educate students bring this education to their homes public servants will also be able to benefit in the waste disposal process with proper education. In conclusion we should intensify the systemical organization and the education of our waste disposal for a better environment.

For 2 years $(1993{\sim}1994)$, study on development of cheap medium for Pleurotus ostreatus revealed that paper sludge contain more CaO and similar T-C, T-N, $P_2O_5$, MgO but less $K_2O$ than any other medium material in chemical property. Mixed treatment (rice straw + paper sludge 10, 30, 50%, cotton waste + paper sludge 10, 30, 50%, cotton waste + rice hull 20 + paper sludge 10, 30, 50, 70%) is similar or fast a little in mycelial growth and is similar or fast $1{\sim}2$ day in period of primordia formation than cotton waste medium, and in the yield to each medium type also increased but excepted in rice hull 20% + paper sludge 70%, especially mixed medium at 7:3 ratio of cotton waste and paper sludge is best treatment because it is increased to 21%. In economical analysis, mixed medium at 7:3 ratio of cotton waste and paper sludge is increased to 50% compared to cotton waste medium in relative income.
