Fundamental investigations were conducted far the recovery process of waste organic solvent by fractional distillation in the aspects of equilibrium and kinetics. Mixture of toluene and xylene, which were both being used in the largest amount as industrial organic solvent, was taken as the artificial waste organic solvent and their distillation behaviors were studied. The purity of recovered solvent was investigated by Cir Chromatography and shown to be in the range of 94~98%. Based upon equilibrium calculations, the changes in the Gibbs free energy, standard enthalpy, and standard entropy for distillation reaction have been estimated. The standard enthalpy changes for toluene and xylene were shown to be 44.833 and 47.044 kJ $mol^{-1}$ respectively, which were similar to their molar heats of evaporation. The activation energies of distillation fur toluene and xylene obtained from kinetic studies were 3.281 and 2.699 kJ $mol^{-1}$ and they were about one tenths of the standard enthalpy changes of distillation reaction. The highness of the purity of recovered organic solvents suggested the possibility that the recovered waste organic sol-vent could partly replace the original solvent.
Many organic solvent-tolerant bacteria have been isolated from all environments such as soil, waste-water, even deep sea after first isolation report of organic solvent-tolerant bacterium. Most organic solvent- tolerant isolates have been determined to be Gram-negative bacteria, because Gram-negative bacteria have inherent tolerance property toward hostile organic solvents more than Gram-positive bacteria. The mechanisms of organic solvent tolerance have been elucidated extensively using mainly organic solvent-tolerant Gram-negative bacteria. The solvent-tolerance mechanisms in Gram-positive bacteria can be found in comparatively recent research. Organic solvents exhibited different toxicity depending on the solvent, and the tolerance levels of organic solvent-tolerant bacteria toward organic solvents were also highly changeable among species and strains. Therefore, organic solvent-tolerant bacteria could coped with solvent toxicity and adapted to solvent stress through the multifactorial and multigenic adaptative strategies. They could be survived even in the hyper concentrations of organic solvents by mechanisms which include: changes in cell morphology and cell behaviour, cell surface modifications, cell membrane adaptations, solvent excretion pumps, chaperones and anti-oxidative response. The aim of this work is to review the representative solvent tolerant bacteria and the adaptative and tolerance strategies toward organic solvents in organic solvent-tolerant bacteria, and their potential industrial and environmental impact.
Basic investigations have been carried out for the solvent extraction of silver contained in the waste photographic fixing solution using D2EHPA as an extractant. Extraction experiments were conducted using artificial waste solution which was made by dissolving $AgNO_3$ in distilled water along with actual waste fixing solution. For artificial waste solution, the extraction of silver was found to occur very rapidly at the initial stage of extraction. In addition, more silver was extracted as the volumetric ratio between aqueous phase and organic phase was decreased. The volumetric ratio of organic extractant to diluent was also taken as an influential variable and the extracted amount of silver was observed to decrease with temperature. The characteristics of silver extraction for actual fixing solution was generally similar to that for artificial waste solution. Regarding the kinetic analysis, the extraction of silver contained in the actual solution was observed to follow a first order reaction.
Radioactive organic wastes containing acetone, alcohol, and particularly tributyl phosphate (TBP)/dodecane contaminated with uranium are extracted from the PUREX process and the decontamination of related equipment. An evaporation method that utilizes existing DU oxidation apparatuses and ventilation systems and a typical muffle furnace installed with an aspirating system are adopted. A separation method using phosphoric acid especially for the TBP/dodecane waste is also studied and evaluated. The results show that a simple evaporation process is utilizable for wastes containing acetone or alcohol with a lower boiling point. A modified muffle furnace is more appropriate to dispose directly of organic wastes having a higher boiling point, such as TBP/dodecane, without generating a condensed waste solution. It is recommended that, when the uranium concentration of TBP/dodecane waste is much higher than stipulated levels, separation technology should be applied to remove uranium from the mixture. Each type of solvent after separation can then be considered disposable below the regulatory limit in the modified furnace discussed in this study.

A solvent sublation has been studied for the determination of trace Au(III), Pt(IV) and Pd(II) in waste water with their complexes of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT). Experimental conditions such as the concentration of HCl, the amount of MBT as a ligand, the type and amount of surfactants, bubbling rate and time, and the type of organic solvent were optimized for the solvent sublation, i.e., 25.0 mL of 2.0 M HCl solution and 30mL of 0.4%(w/v) MBT ethanolic solution were added to a 1.0 L sample to form stable complexes. The addition of 4.0 mL of 1 ${\times}$$10^{-3}$ M CTAB (cetyltrimehtylammonium bromide) solution was needed for the effective flotation accomplished by bubbling nitrogen gas at the rate of 40.0 mL/min for 35 minutes. As a solvent, 20.0 mL of MIBK (methylisobuthylketone) was used to extract the floated complexes. The procedure was applied to three kinds of waste waters. Au(III) was determined as 0.68 ng/mL and 0.98 ng/mL respectively for final washed water of two plating industries in Banwol. Pd(II) and Pt(IV) were not detected in any of the three samples. The recovery, which was obtained with analyte-spiked samples, were 95-120%.
Using enrichment procedures, we isolated organic solvent-tolerant Bacillus sp. BCNU 5005 from waste water and soil in the Ulsan industrial plant region. BCNU 5005 had a maximum similarity of 98% with B. subtilis and was designated as B. subtilis based on phylogenetic analyses using 16S rDNA sequences. Generally, most bacteria and their enzymes are destroyed or inactivated in the presence of high concentrations of organic solvents. However, the lipase activity of B. subtilis BCNU 5005 was very stable in the presence of various kinds of solvents (25%, v/v) except chloroform, ethylbenzene and decane. Furthermore, BCNU 5005 was determined to have a degradative ability towards organic solvents. This organic solvent tolerant Bacillus sp. BCNU 5005 could be used as a new potential resource for biotransformation and bioremediation.
This study was performed to recycle Propylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether Acetate (PGMEA) from Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) industry emission as a waste organic solvent by using a multistage distillation column and tried to decide optimum reflux ratio. From the final experiment result, it was confirmed ; in case the sample A, the PGMEA purity is more than 98% and the moisture is less than 0.05%, on the other hand, in case the sample B, the PGMEA purity is more than 95% when the reflux ratio is 6 and the moisture is less than 0.01% (Refer to Table 1 for the contents of sample A and B). These values means fine level which can be adapted in the LCD manufacture, requiring more than 90% common purity of recycling level.
Classical membrane processes like microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) are being applied in the last years more frequently in environmental and effluent process problems. Newer technologies and developments like pervaporation (PV) and gas sepaxation (GS) recently found commercial applications in the treatment of waste waters and gas streams. The incentive here is either the clean-up from organic components to comply with federal emission regulations or the recovery of the organics for economical reasons. Processes still in their development stage are combinations of chemical reactions with membrane processes to separate and treat $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ laden waste gas streams in the clean-up of stack-gases. In this paper we will first give a short overview of the more recent developments in MF, UF and RO. This is followed by a closer look on newer technologies applied in environmental problems. The applications looked at are the recovery of organic components from solvent laden gas streams and the separation of organic volatiles from aqueous waste waters via pervaporation. Technical solutions, the advantages and disadvantages of the processes and. where possible, cost estimations will be presented.

In this study, waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was recycled to produce a support and then polyetherimide (PEI) was used for environmentally friendly organic solvent nanofiltration. The prepared composite membrane was first prepared by electrospinning a PET support, then casted on the support using PEI having excellent solvent resistance, and organic solvent nanoparticles using a Non-solvent Induced Phase Separation (NIPS) method. A filtration membrane was prepared. First, the fiber diameter and tensile strength of the PET scaffold prepared prior to membrane fabrication were identified through morphology analysis, and the optimal scaffold for the organic solvent nanofiltration membrane was identified. Afterward, the PET/PEI composite membrane prepared was checked for the DEA removal rate of Congo red having a molecular weight of 697 g/mol in ethanol to understand the performance as an organic solvent nanofiltration membrane according to the concentration of PEI. Finally, the removal rate of Congo red was 90% or more.
Fundamental studies were carried out for an effective removal and recovery of silver from waste photo-developing solution by solvent extraction. The organic solvents examined for silver-extraction were ALIQUAT 336, D2EHPA, KELEX 100, and TBP. ALIQUAT 336, which is an anionic exchanger, was found to be efficient for the extraction of silver and the reason for this was considered to be due to the chloride ion contained in its structure. The extent of silver extraction was examined to increase with the concentration of ALIQUAT 336 until it reached 0.6 M and no more extraction was observed above this concentration. The extraction of silver by ALIQUAT 336 was found to reach its pseudo-equilibrium within a few minutes after the reaction started and additional slight increase in silver extraction was observed until 30 minutes of reaction time. The observed differences in silver extraction for artificial and actual waste solutions were considered to be based upon the different ionic form of silver-containing species in these solutions.
