  • An experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of concrete mixtures in which coarse aggregate was partially (30, 50 or 70 %) replaced with pre-washed municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. Results indicated that bottom ash reduced the compressive strength, elastic modulus, and levels of heavy metals in leachate when used as a replacement for gravel, and that the maximum amount of MSWI bottom ash in concrete should not exceed 50 %. To analyze the effect mechanism of bottom ash in concrete, the degree of hydration and the following pozzolanic reaction characterized by the pozzolanic activity index, and the porosity distribution in cement mortar. The study indicates that improved properties of concrete are not solely later strength gain and reduced levels of heavy metals in leachate but also the progression of pozzolanic reactions, where a dense structure contains a higher proportion of fine pores that are related to durability.

  • This study is on the increasement of strength about soft ground improvement material using waste residual(paper fly ash, coke ash, slag) by fire. Through this study the authors have analyzed the strength improvement of mixed soft silty sand with improvement materials. The strength of mixed soils with high mixture ratio and more curing days increased. But CA-30(cokes 60%) make more low strength improvement than others. Therefore the authors find out that paper fly ash+cokes, paper fly ash+slag or cokes+slag improvement material is more effect in improvement of soft silty sand than cokes+cenlent. And Ettringite reaction is free mixed soils with more than two materials.

  • In Japan, the municipal solid waste, which amounts to 50 million tons, is generated every year and most of it is incinerated. The bottom and fly ashes are disposed to the registered disposal areas under the provisions of The Waste Disposal and Public Cleaning Law. Especially, as the fly ash from the municipal waste incineration (the primary fly ash) contains heavy metals (lead, zinc, etc) and dioxins, it cannot be disposed directly without decontamination, such as moiling, cementation, chelating and dissolving processes provided in the law. However, these procedures for decontamination, except melting, are not enough for dioxins. Even in case of melting, the fly ash from the process (the secondary fly ash) contains high concentration of heavy metals (e.g., Zn; 1-20%, Pb; 1-10%). For these reasons, Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ), a governmental organization, started a four-year project to develop the treatment technologies of these fly ashes in 1999. The purpose of the project is to establish the integrated technologies to recover the valuable metals from, and to decontaminate, the primary and secondary fly-ashes in the practical scale by utilizing the existing metallurgical processes and facilities, along with the energy saving and the reduction of the environmental impact.

  • This study investigated the shear and CBR characteristics of dredge soil-bottom ash-waste tire powder-mixed lightweight soil, which was developed to recycle dredged soil, bottom ash, and waste tire powder. Test specimens were prepared with various contents of waste tire powder ranging from 0 to 100% at 50% intervals by the weight of the dry dredged soil. Several series of triaxial compression tests and CBR tests were conducted. The shear strength characteristics of the lightweight soil were compared using two different shear tests (triaxial compression test and direct shear test). The experimental results indicated that the internal friction angle of the lightweight soil obtained by the direct shear tests was greater than that by the triaxial shear tests. However, the cohesion value obtained by the triaxial shear tests was greater than that by the direct shear tests. The CBR value of the lightweight soil decreased from 35% to 15% as waste tire powder content increased.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical characteristics of fiber-reinforced lightweight soil using waste fishing net or monofilament for recycling both dredged soils and bottom ash. Reinforced lightweight soil consists of dredged soil, cement, air foam, and bottom ash. Waste fishing net or monoiament was added the mixture in order to increase the shear strength of the lightweight soil. Test specimens were fabricated with various mixing conditions, including waste fishing net content and monofilament content. Several series of unconfined compression tests and direct shear tests were carried out. From the experimental results, it was found that the unconfined compressive strength, as well as the stress-strain behavior of reinforced lightweight soil was strongly influenced by mixing conditions. In this study, the maximum increase in shear strength was obtained with either a 0.5% content of monofilament or 0.25% waste fishing net. The unconfined compressive strength of reinforced lightweight soil with monofilament was greater than that of reinforced lightweight soil with waste fishing net.

  • The main consistent materials and main elements of the bottom ash in municipal solid waste incineration ash according to particle size were investigated and the environmental hazards were considered by investigating the content of dioxin and heavy metals in bottom ash and the concentration of heavy metals in its leachate. The main materials of bottom ash are glasses, ceramics, scraps of iron. As the particle size increases, their percentage weight also increases and their percentage weight was over 70% in 4 mesh~25 mm particle size fraction. The main elements of bottom ash are CaO, $SiO_2$, $Fe_2$$O_3$,$ A1_2$$O_3$and the content of CaO decreases and the content of $SiO_2$increases as particle size increases. The heavy metals accumulate in small particle size fraction. The concentration of heavy metals in each leachate by domestic leaching test is almost similar. As the aging period is prolonged, pH of bottom ash lowers gradually and the leached concentration of Cu and Pb diminishes.
