호도 내과피 추출액을 이용한 견직물의 염색성 (A Study on the Properties of Silk Fabrics Dyed with Walnut Shell Extract)

  • A natural dye aqueous walnut shell extract was obtained by extraction of walnut shell using water at various conditions in this study. Silk fabrics were dyed at various dyeing and mordanting conditions using walnut shell extract and various mordants (Al, Cu, Fe ions). Studies have been made on the effects of dyeing and mordanting conditions on the dyeing properties and fastness (light, water and dry cleaning fastness) of dyed silk Fabric. The results obtained in this study were as follows;. The dye content in the walnut shell extract increased with increasing extraction temperature to 90℃ and extraction time to 120min, and thereafter the dye content decreased a little. The dry cleaning and water fastness of non-mordanted silk fabrics were better than those of mordanted silk fabrics.

Validation of Adsorption Efficiency of Activated Carbons through Surface Morphological Characterization Using Scanning Electron Microscopy Technique

  • The studies on activated carbon prepared from walnut shell and groundnut shell were undertaken to ascertain the effect of initial state of precursor and activation process on the development of porosity in the resulting activated carbon. Walnut shell based carbon shows the presence of cellular pores while Groundnut shell based carbon shows fibrillar pore structure. The adsorption parameters, characterization of product and scanning electron microscopic studies carried out showed the presence of mainly Micro, Meso and Macro porosity in carbon prepared from Walnut shell while mainly micro porosity was observed in Groundnut shell based activated carbon. An interrelationship between the adsorption efficiency and porosity in terms of quality control parameters, for before and after activation, was validated through the scanning electron microscopic data.

미분탄화력발전에서의 바이오매스 혼소 시 플랜트 성능특성 평가 (Evaluation of Plant Performance during Biomass Co-firing in Pulverized Coal Power Plant)

  • The aims of this research were to evaluate effects of biomass co-firing to pulverized coal power plants and the variation of co-firing ratios on the plant efficiency related to power consumption of auxiliary system and flue gas characteristics such as production and component by process simulation based on the existing pulverized coal power plant. In this study, four kinds of biomass are selected as renewable fuel candidates for co-firing: wood pellet(WP), palm kernel shell(PKS), empty fruit bunch(EFB) and walnut shell(WS). Process simulation for various biomass fuels and co-firing ratios was performed using a commercial software. Gas side including combustion system and flue gas treatment system was considering with combination of water and steam side which contains turbines, condenser, feed water heaters and pumps. As a result, walnut shell might be the most suitable as co-firing fuel among four biomass since when 10% of walnut shell was co-fired with 90% of coal on thermal basis, flue gas production and power consumption of auxiliary systems were the smallest than those of other biomass co-firing while net plant efficiency was relatively higher than those of other biomass co-firing. However, with increasing walnut shell co-firing ratios, boiler efficiency and net plant efficiency were expected to decrease rather than coal combustion without biomass co-firing.

Capacity of Activated Carbon Derived from Agricultural Waste in the Removal of Reactive Dyes from Aqueous Solutions

  • The study describes the results of batch experiments on the removal of Reactive Yellow 15 (RY15) and Reactive Black 5 (RB5) from synthetic textile wastewater onto Activated Carbon from Walnut shell (ACW). The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlish, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models of adsorption. The experiments were carried out as function of initial concentrations, pH, temperature (303-333), adsorbent dose and kinetics. The surface area and pore volumes of adsorbent were measured by BET and BJH methods. The findings confirm the surface area (BET) is 248.99 $m^2/g$. The data fitted well with the Temkin and D-R isotherms for RY15 and RB5, respectively. The most favorable adsorption occurred in acidic pH. Pseudo-second order kinetic model were best in agreement with adsorption of RY15 and RB5 on ACW. The results indicate that walnut shell could be an alternative to more costly adsorbent currently being used for dyes removal.

코스메슈티컬 적용을 위한 흑호두 과피의 생리학적 연구 (Physiological Study of the Extract of Junglans nigra Shells for the Cosmeceutical Application)

  • 천연물 중 시판되지 않고 대부분 버려지는 흑호두(Juglans nigra) 과피를 추출하여 화장품 적용 가능성과 생리 활성 및 효능을 조사하였다. 흑호두 과피 열수 추출물의 DPPH 라디칼 소거능은 300㎍/mL에서 76.06%였으며 ABTS 라디칼 소거 활성은 1000 ㎍/mL에서 61%로 우수한 항산화 활성을 나타냈다. 흑호두 과피 추출물을 피부 각질 세포인 HaCaT 세포에 적용했을 때 250 ㎍/mL에서 92.6%로 세포 생존율에 미치는 영향이 현저히 낮았고 500 ㎍/mL 농도에서 67.35%의 nitric oxide(NO) 생성이 억제되었으며 100 ㎍/mL 농도에서 비타민 C보다 31배 더 높은 Hyaluronidase 억제 효과를 나타냈다. 결론적으로 흑호두 과피 추출물은 코스메슈티컬 응용 및 식품, 향료, 헬스 케어, 제약 등 다양한 산업에서 고부가 가치 천연 소재로 활용 가능성을 시사하고 있다.

Performance evaluation of membrane bioreactor (MBR) coupled with activated carbon on tannery wastewater treatment

  • This study evaluates the performance of membrane bioreactor (MBR) coupled with a modified walnut shell granular activated carbon (WSGAC) for tannery wastewater treatment. For this purpose, a pilot with overall volume of 80L and 12 hours hydraulic retention time (HRT) is operated in three scenarios. Here, the chemical oxidation demand (COD) of wastewater is reduced more than 98% in both C:N ratios of 13 (S1) and 6.5 (S2). This performance also remains intact when alkalinity depletes and pH reduces below 6 (S3). The ammonium removal ranges between 99% (S2) and 70% (S3). The reliability of system in different operating conditions is due to high solids retention time and larger flocs formation in MBR. The average breakthrough periods of WSGAC are determined between 15 minutes (S2) and 25 minutes (S1). In this period, the overall nitrate removal of MBR-WSGAC exceeds 95%. It is also realized that adding no chemicals for alkalinity stabilization and consequently pH reduction of MBR effluent (S3) can slightly lengthen the breakthrough from 15 to 20 minutes. Consequently, MBR can successfully remove the organic content of tannery wastewater even in adverse operational conditions and provide proper influent for WSGAC.

Role of modified activated carbon by H3PO4 or K2CO3 from natural adsorbent for removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions

  • Most heavy metals are well-known toxic and carcinogenic agents and when discharged into wastewater represent a serious threat to the human population and the fauna and flora of the receiving water bodies. The present study aims to develop a procedure for Pb(II) removal. The study was based on using powdered activated carbon, which was prepared from walnut shells generated as plant wastes and modified with potassium carbonate or phosphoric acid as chemical agents. The main parameters, such as effect of pH, effect of sorbent dosage, Pb(II) concentrations, and various contact times influence the sorption process. The experimental results were analyzed by using Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption models. The kinetic study of Pb(II) on activated carbon from walnut shells was performed based on pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order equations. The data indicate that the adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo-second order rate. The procedure was successfully applied for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions.

김천지역 실생묘 유래 호두나무의 수령별 수확량 및 과실 품질 (Yields and Fruit Quality of Different Aged Walnut Trees (Juglans sinensis Dode) Derived from Seedlings in Gimcheon)

  • 본 연구는 실생묘 유래 호두나무의 수령별 수확량 산정과 과실 품질을 비교, 분석하기 위해 호두 주산지인 김천지역의 재배임가를 대상으로 실시되었다. 공시목은 10년생부터 60년생까지 9등급으로 구분하였으며, 각 등급별 15본을 선정하여 총 135본이다. 수령별 생육특성을 조사한 결과, 평균 수고는 10.3 m, 평균 수관면적은 63.7 ㎡으로 나타났다. 수령별 결실특성을 조사한 결과, 본당 착과수는 평균 573.1개이며, 35년생 호두나무가 974.0개로 가장 많은 반면 10년생 호두나무가 124.7개로 가장 적은 것으로 조사되었다. 또한 결과모지당 착과수는 35년생 호두나무가 3.1개로 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다. 수령별 과실특성을 조사한 결과, 과실 유형별 평균 무게는 각각 청피호두 58.7±4.0 g, 알호두 10.5±0.5 g, 인 4.9±0.2 g인 것으로 조사되었다. 과실 유형별 평균 수확량은 청피호두 32.5±13.8 kg, 알호두 5.9±2.5 kg, 인 2.8±1.2 kg이었으며, 수관면적, 결과모지당 착과수, 1 ㎥당 착과수 등과 정의상관관계를 보였다. 실생묘 유래 호두나무의 수령에 따른 본당 수확량 추정식은 청피호두의 경우 y=8993.9·ln(수령-9)+8230.3, R2=0.8531와 알호두 y=1647.1·ln(수령-9)+1442.1, R2=0.8527로 산출하였다.

바이오매스(호두껍질) 혼소에 대한 연소 특성에 관한 연구 (Combustion Characteristics for Co-firing of Biomass (Walnut Shell))

  • 본 연구에서는 발전소의 혼합연료로서 바이오매스인 호두껍질(Walnut Shell)에 대한 연소특성을 조사하기 위하여 열중량 분석기(TGA)와 분류층 반응기(DTR)를 이용하여 실험을 수행하였다. 바이오매스 WS는 기존 석탄과 비교하여 낮은 온도 영역에서 활발한 연소반응을 보였고, 활성화 에너지 또한 낮은 값을 가짐으로써 연소반응속도가 더욱 증가함을 확인할 수 있었다. 바이오매스 WS와 역청탄의 혼소에 있어서 고정층 분석에서는 혼소 영향이 선형적으로 나타나는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 그렇지만 분류층 반응기에서는 바이오매스 혼소율을 5%증가 시에는 UBC가 감소하다가 이후에 다시 UBC가 증가하는 Non-additive 현상을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 바이오매스의 급격한 연소로 주위에 산소 부족현상이 생겨 석탄의 연소가 지연되는 것을 보여준다. 이 현상을 해결하기 위하여 산소를 증가시켜주었을 때 더 높은 혼소율을 성취할 수 있음을 보여주었다.
