The objective of this paper is to investigate into the influence of the injection conditions on the insert deformation and the wall thickness of the injection part using the three-dimensional injection molding analysis. Full three-dimensional insert model was added to the injection molding analysis model to consider the effects of insert deformation during the injection molding process. In order to obtain the optimum injection molding condition with a minimum insert deformation, degree of experiments were utilized. From the results of the analyses, it was shown that the optimum injection condition is injection time of 1.6 sec, injection pressure of 30 MPa and packing time of 15 sec. In addition it was shown that the wall thickness is approached to target thickness when the core deformation is considered in the injection molding analysis.
Deformation surrounding the hole in the tube during the hydropiercing process has been investigated in this study. The tube is expanded and internally pressurized between upper and lower dies, and a piercing punch is driven forcefully through a cross passage in the die and through the wall of the tube. The pressurized fluid within the tube provides support to the wall of the tube during a piercing step to form a hole in the tube having less deformation surrounding the hole in the tube. The deformation area may be fully retracted to a substantially flat form or partially retracted to a countersunk form. In this study, a mathematical model that can predict deformation surrounding the hole has been proposed and experimentally verified by actual hydropiercing test.

Current torsional provisions focus n restricting torsional effect of asymmetric wall structures by proportioning strength of wall based on the traditional assumption that stiffness and strength are independent. Recent studies have pointed out that stiffness of structural wall is dependent on the strength. This implies that actual stiffness of walls can be determined only after torsional design is finished and current torsional provisions may result in significant errors. To overcome this shortcoming, this paper proposes deformation based torsional design for asymmetric wall structures. Contrary to the current torsional provisions, deformation-based torsional design uses displacement and rotation angle as design parameters and calculates base shear for inelastic torsional response directly. Main purpose of deformation based torsional design is not to restrict torsional response but to ensure intended torsional mechanism according to the capacity design concept. Because displacement and rotation angle can be used as performance criteria indicating performance level of asymmetric structures, this method can be applied to the performance based seismic design effectively.
Recently, it is a trend of the underground excavation to become larger and deeper for more effective use of available space and with the advent of new excavation technologies. The ground typically has a complex stratigraphy. The excavation can lead to large deformation in the nearby structures and large earth pressure on the wall. This can lead to serious problem in the stability of the wall. For the retaining wall to be safely constructed, it is important that the stratigraphy and engineering properties of the ground be accurately estimated, based on the excavation plan and appropriate excavation method. This study uses the measured field data and numerical results to characterize the characteristics of the lateral deformation of the retaining wall. A touredof six field data were analysed. SUNEX, a numerical program which uses the elasto-plastic model to represent the soil, was used. It was shown that the measured deformations exceeded the proposed values for shallow excavations. Overall, the maximum lateral deformation was within the proposed value and hence, the walls were analyzed as safe.

In order to evaluate a failure behavior of pipe with notch-type wall thinning, the present study performed full-scale pipe tests using the 102mm, Schedule 80 pipe specimen simulated notch- and circular-type thinning defects. The pipe tests were conducted under the conditions of both monotonic and cyclic bending moment at a constant internal pressure of 10 MPa. From the results. of experiment the failure mode, load carrying capacity, deformation ability, and fatigue life of a notch-type wall thinned pipe were investigated, and they were compared with those of a circular-type wall thinned pipe. The failure mode of notched pipe was similar to that of circular-type thinned pipe under the monotonic bending load. Under the cyclic bending load, however, the mode was clearly distinguished with variation in the shape of wall thinning. The load carrying capacity of a pipe containing notch-type wall thinning was about the same or slightly lower than that of a pipe containing circular-type wall thinning when the thinning area was subjected to tensile stress, whereas it was higher than that of a pipe containing circular-type thinning defect when the thinning area was subjected to compressive stress. On the other hand, the deformation ability and fatigue life of a notch-type wall thinned pipe was lower than those of a circular-type wall thinned pipe.

The effects of various supporting arrangements have been investigated on an excavation support system using a numerical tool. The purpose of providing different supporting arrangements was to limit the pile wall deflection in the range of 0.5% to 1% of the excavation depth. Firstly, a deep excavation supported by sheet pile wall was modeled and the effects of sheet pile wall thickness, excavation depth and distance to adjacent footings from sheet pile wall face were explored on the soil deformation and wall deflection. Further analysis was performed considering six different arrangements of tieback anchors and struts in order to limit the wall deflections. Case-01 represents the basic excavation geometry supported by sheet pile wall only. In Case-02, sheet pile wall was supported by struts. Case-03 is a sheet pile wall supported by tieback anchors. Likewise, for the Cases 04, 05 and 06, different arrangements of struts and tieback anchors were used. Finally, the effects of different supporting arrangements on soil deformation, sheet pile wall deflection, bending moments and anchor forces have been presented.

This paper develops an optimized torsional design method of asymmetric wall structures considering deformation capacities of walls. Contrary to the current torsional provisions, a deformation based torsional design is based on the assumption that stiffness and strength are dependent. Current torsional provisions specify two design eccentricity of stiffness to calculate the design forces of members. But such a methodology leads to an excessive over-strength of some members and an optimal torsional behavior is not ensured. Deformation-based torsional design uses displacement and rotation angle as design parameters and calculates base shear for inelastic torsional response directly. Because optimal torsional behavior can be defined based on the deformation of members, deformation based torsional design procedure can be applied to the optimal and performance-based torsional design. To consider the effect of accidental eccentricity, an over-strength factor is defined. The over-strength factor is determined from performance level, torsional resistance and arrangement of walls.

To enhance the application of the reinforced retaining walls in the railway industry, this paper suggested a type of reinforcement subgrade with short reinforcement and rigid facing. To become popular the reinforced retaining walls in the industry, the deformation of retaining walls should be controlled below some limited level. In this paper, small scale and full scale tests of the proposed retaining walls were performed and their deformation characteristics were evaluated. Even though it has short reinforcement, the rigid type retaining wall had small deformation to the external train loading than the segmental type retaining wall had.
This study is conducted to clarify the effect of internal pressure on the deformation and collapse behaviors of wall thinned elbow under in-plane bending moment. Thus the nonlinear three-dmensional finite element analyses were performed to obtain the moment-rotation curve of elbow contatining various wall thinning defects located at intrados and extrados under in-plane bending (closing and opening modes) with internal pressure of $0{\sim}15MPa.$ From the results of analysis, the effect of internal of collapse moment of elbow on the global deformation behavior of wall thinned elbow was discussed, and the dependence of collapse moment of elbow on the magnitude of internal pressure was investigated under different loading mode, defect location, and defect shape.

In this study, the modification of turbulent boundary layer flow by local wall vibration is investigated. The wall is locally vibrated using a wall deformation actuator, which moves up and down at the frequencies of 100Hz and 50Hz. Simultaneous measurements of the streamwise velocities in the spanwise direction are performed at several wall-normal and streamwise locations using an in-house multi-channel hot wire anemometer and a spanwise hot-wire-probe rake. The mean velocity is reduced in most places due to the wall vibration and its reduced amount becomes small as flow goes downstream. Interestingly, the mean velocity is found to increase very near the wall and near the actuator. This is due to the motion induced by the streamwise vortices which are generated by the downward motion of the actuator. In case of the streamwise velocity fluctuations, their magnitude increases as compared to the unperturbed turbulent boundary layer, and the increased amount becomes small as the flow moves downstream. The modified flow field at the forcing frequency of 50Hz is not much different from that of 100Hz, except the reduced amount of modification.
