  • General physical properties and radiation durabilities of some domestic woods and imported lauans were measured and discussed as a preliminary study on the preparation of W. P. C. The data obtained indicate that 1) the hardness of wood is generally proportional to the specific gravity and to the bending strength, 2) the hardness of wood measured in tangential direction to the annual ring increases along with the distance from the center of the annual ring to the peel, 3) the changes of specific gravity under 100 Mrad gamma irradiation are not remarkable, 4) the hardnesses of the soft woods are decreased more -readily than those of the hard woods, but the decreases of hardnesses are not extreme upto 10 Mrad sugges ting that the woods are sufficiently durable to gamma irradiation of below 10 Mard in the preparation of W. P. C.

  • Near-Earth asteroid-comet transition object 4015 Wilson-Harrington is a possible target of the joint European Space Agency (ESA) and Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Marco Polo sample return mission. 4015 W-H was discovered showing cometary activity by Albert G. Wilson and Robert G. Harrington at Palomar Observatory in 1949. After recovered in 1979, 4015 W-H has been observed at every apparition, it always was seen as a point source. We made time series observations for 4015 W-H using the 1.8m telescope with 2K CCD at Bohyunsan Observatory, on the nights of 2009 November 17-19. The geocentric distance of 4015 H-W was about 0.38 AU at that time. No trace of cometary activity is seen from our images. From the light curve analysis, we find a double-peaked rotational period of 2.2 hours with amplitude of 0.4 magnitude. Our result is much shorter than previous measurements of 3.6 hours (Harris & Young 1983) and 6.1 hours (Osip et al 1995). We will discuss possible origin of the period variations.

  • The thermal management of high-power LED components in an assembly structure is crucial for the stable operation and proper luminous function. This study employs numerical tools to determine the optimum thermal design in LEDs with a heat sink consisting of a crevice-type vapor-chamber heat pipe. The effects of the MCPCB are investigated in terms of the substrate thicknesses on which the LEDs are mounted. Further, different placement configurations in a system module are considered. This study found that for a confined area, a power of 40 W/LED is applicable to a high-power package. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of dielectric layer materials should ideally be greater than 0.9 W/m.K. The temperature conditions of the vapor chamber in a heat pipe greatly affect the thermal performance of the system. At an offset distance of 9.0 mm and a $2^{\circ}C$ increase in the temperature of the heat pipe, the resulting maximum temperature increase is approximately $1.9^{\circ}C$ for each heat dissipation temperature. Finally, at a thermal conductivity of 0.3 W/m.K, it was found that the total thermal resistance changes dramatically. Above 1.2 W/m.K, the resistance change reduces exponentially.

  • The aim of this study is to rectify the misclassified image features and enhance the performance of image classification tasks by incorporating a channel- coding technique, widely used in telecommunication. Specifically, the proposed algorithm employs the error - correcting mechanism of convolutional coding combined with the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that are the state - of- the- arts image classifier s. We develop an encoder and a decoder to employ the error - correcting capability of the convolutional coding. In the encoder, the label values of the image data are converted to convolutional codes that are used as target outputs of the CNN, and the network is trained to minimize the Euclidean distance between the target output codes and the actual output codes. In order to correct misclassified features, the outputs of the network are decoded through the trellis structure with Viterbi algorithm before determining the final prediction. This paper demonstrates that the proposed architecture advances the performance of the neural networks compared to the traditional one- hot encoding method.

  • In urban areas, GPS(Global Positioning System)/GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) signals are blocked or distorted by structures such as buildings, which limits positioning. To compensate for this problem, in this paper, fingerprinting-based positioning using RSRP(: Reference Signal Received Power) information of LTE signals is performed. The W-KNN(Weighted - K Nearest Neighbors) technique, which is widely used in the positioning step of fingerprinting, yields different positioning performance results depending on the similarity distance calculation method and weighting method used in correlation. In this paper, the performance of the fingerprinting positioning according to the techniques used in correlation is comparatively analyzed experimentally.

  • Gait initiation is a transitional process from the balanced upright standing to the beginning of steady-state walking. Dysbalanced gait initiation often causes stroke patients to fall. The net center of pressure, measured by two triaxial force plates from twenty healthy subjects and two stroke patients, was investigated to assess asymmetry of gait initiation in hemiparetic subjects. The time interval and distance of the net center of pressure(CoP) moved from the initiation point to the toe off(S1) and from the toe off to the initial contact(S2) were calculated during gait initiation of normal and stroke patients. When the patient with right hemiplegia(A) initiated his gait with right foot, the time interval and the distance of the net CoP in S1 and S2 were smaller than that of normal subjects' values. However, he initiated the gait with left foot(unaffected side) the time interval and the distance of net CoP in S1 were larger than normative values. Differently, the patient with left hemiplegia(B) has shown that larger time interval and distance in S1 and smaller time interval and distance in S2 in both sides. His asymmetry(with which side the gait initiated) was not significant. It is too early to conclude that these results could be general characteristics of the stroke patients because the variations were large and moreover, the level of motor recovery of the patients was different. However, it is expected that these trials could help to set up the strategy of the therapy for the rehabilitation or prevention of fall in stroke patients.

  • With the advance in mobile communication systems, the need for distributed applications running on multiple mobile devices also grows gradually. As such applications are subject to H/W failures of the mobile device or communication disruptions, compared to the traditional applications in fixed networks, it is crucial to develop any recovery mechanism suitable for them. For this, checkpointing is widely used to restart interrupted applications. In this paper, we devise an efficient checkpointing method that adopts the software agent executed at the mobile support station. The agent, called the checkpointing agent, is aimed at supporting the concept of rollback-distance (R-distance) that bounds the maximum number of roll-backed local checkpoints. By means of the R-distance, our method can prevent undesirable domino effects and heavy checkpoint overhead, while providing high flexibility in checkpoint creation.

  • This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of the use of distance-evaluation tools and methods among students with learning difficulties from the teachers' point of view, to achieve this goal. A scale was built, and the psychometric characteristics were validated. It consisted, in its final form, of 17 items distributed on four axes, in addition to three open questions. It was applied to a random sample of (149) teachers of students with learning difficulties in Makkah Region. The results showed that teachers' keenness to encourage students with learning difficulties, so that they would not feel frustrated with the distance learning process. It was also evident that teachers did not use achievement portfolios in the evaluation process. In connection with the appropriate evaluation methods, the majority indicated the use of work sheets and visual evaluation methods that rely on audio and visual skills, such as presenting videos, pictures, audio and games, and applying short objective tests. Among the proposals to improve evaluation methods and tools: Individual evaluation, attention to individual treatment, obligating personal attendance of students to school, splitting the required tasks, and not increasing the skills required to be mastered. As for the obstacles that teachers face: Lack of time, difficulty in communicating with students with distance learning difficulties and problems related to the Internet such as interruption, weakness, or lack of availability.

  • Purpose: Preoperative identification of the intraosseous posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) is critical when planning sinus surgery. This study was conducted to determine the distance between the cementoenamel junction and the PSAA, as well as to identify factors influencing the detection of the PSAA on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: In total, 254 CBCT scans of maxillary sinuses, acquired with 2 different scanners, were examined to identify the PSAA. The distance from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) to the PSAA was recorded at each maxillary posterior tooth position. Binomial logistic regression and multiple linear regression were employed to evaluate the effects of scanner type, CBCT parameters, sex, and age on PSAA detection and CEJ-PSAA distance, respectively. P-values less than 0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: The mean CEJ-PSAA distances at the second molar, first molar, second premolar, and first premolar positions were 17.0±4.0 mm, 21.8±4.1 mm, 19.5±4.7 mm, and 19.9±4.9 mm for scanner 1, respectively, and 17.3±3.5 mm, 16.9±4.3 mm, 18.5±4.1 mm, and 18.4±4.3 mm for scanner 2. No independent variable significantly influenced PSAA detection. However, tooth position (b=-0.67, P<0.05) and scanner type (b=-1.3, P<0.05) were significant predictors of CEJ-PSAA distance. Conclusion: CBCT-based estimates of CEJ-PSAA distance were comparable to those obtained in previous studies involving cadavers, CT, and CBCT. The type of CBCT scanner may slightly influence this measurement. No independent variable significantly impacted PSAA detection.

  • The effects of temperature and initial crack length on the impact fracture behavior for the side plate material of FRP ship were investigated. And the effects of the counterpart roughness and sliding distance on the volumetric wear of same material were investigated as well. Impact fracture toughness of GF/PE composites displayed maximum value when the temperature of specimen is room temperature and $50^{\circ}C$, and with decreasing the temperature of specimen, impact fracture toughness decreased. Impact fracture energy of GF/EP composites decreased with increasing the initial crack length of specimen, and this value decreased rapidly when the temperature of specimen is lowest, $-25^{\circ}C$. It is believed that sensitivity of notch on impact fracture energy were increased with decreasing the temperature of specimen. With increasing the sliding distance, the transition sliding distance, which displayed different aspect on the friction coefficient and the volumetric wear loss, were found out. Counterpart roughness had a big influence on the wear rate at running in period, however the effect of counterpart roughness became smaller with sliding speed increase in. Volumetric wear loss were increased with increasing the applied load and the counterpart roughness.
