  • The unsteady vortical flow over ONERA 70-degree delta wing was simulated using RANS and DES flow solvers on hybrid unstructured meshes. A study of time accuracy is accomplished to determine the effects of time step and number of iteration in pseudo-time stepping on numerical solutions. The grid size test is also performed to demonstrate that DES can be used to capture more accurately the unsteady vortical flow features over RANS simulation.

  • In the present study, naturally generated bubbles were investigated to be sure if they could be adopted as the tracer for PIV techniques. The bubble can be grown from the nuclei melted in the water of tunnel and the size of bubbles is changed through the variation of tunnel pressure. Since the trace ability and appropriate size of tracer are so important for PIV techniques, the characteristics of bubbles as tracer are revealed in terms of trace ability and bubble size with the variation of flow speed and tunnel pressure in this study. In addition, PIV measurements of (low behind a rotating propeller are conducted to confirm the trace ability of bubbles even in a highly vortical flow.

  • Coastal sediments in polluted areas adsorb many hydrophobic pollutants such as PCBs. During environmental remediation projects like dredging, they can be resuspended and transported to less polluted areas. To assess the environmental impact, the author previously developed a mathematical model that can simulate the changes of particle size distribution (PSD) due to sedimentation, vortical dispersion and coagulation. In this research, the simulation results using this model were presented in conjunction with observed PSDs from a 2-m settling column simulating coastal environments. The simulations showed that the model predictions were in fairly good agreement with the observed data (changes of PSDs in terms of depths and times), and that the resuspended sediments coagulated during the vertical transport. So, this study showed that the developed model has a good ability to describe the very complicated phenomena of real aggregation and vortical transport dynamics of coastal sediments with various particle sizes.

  • In this paper, we report a novel RF-MEMS packaging technology with lightweight, small size, and short electric path length. To achieve this goal, we used the ultra thin silicon substrate as a packaging substrate. The via holes lot vortical feed-through were fabricated on the thin silicon wafer by wet chemical processing. Then, via holes were filled and micro-bumps were fabricated by electroplating. The packaged RF device has a reflection loss under 22 〔㏈〕 and a insertion loss of -0.04∼-0.08 〔㏈〕. These measurements show that we could package the RF device without loss and interference by using the vertical feed-through. Specially, with the ultra thin silicon wafer we can realize of a device package that has low-cost, lightweight and small size. Also, we can extend a 3-D packaging structure by stacking assembled thin packages.

  • Tip clearance loss is a limitation of the improvement of turbomachine performance. Previous studies show the Tip clearance loss is generated by the leakage flow through the tip clearance, and is roughly linearly proportional to the gap size. This study investigates the tip clearance effects on the performance of ducted propeller. The investigation was carried out by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) code CFX14.5. These simulations were carried out to determine the underlying mechanisms of the tip clearance effects. The calculations were performed at three different chosen advance ratios. Simulation results showed that the tip loss slope was not linearly at high advance due to the reversed pressure at the leading edge. Three type of vortical structures were observed in the tip clearance at different clearance size.

  • The flow field structures of dual jet-in-cross-flow were examined experimentally for in-lined perforated damage holes configuration using particle image velocimetry. Ensemble averaged in-plane velocity and vorticity data in the jet were determined to study the mean jet structure. Jets are formed by pressure differences between upper and lower airfoil surface. The flow structure of vicinity of the thru holes consist of a vortical structure that wrap around the jets like a horseshoe and develop further downstream through a pair of stream-wise vortices. The shape, size and location of the horseshoe vortex were found to be dependent on the angle of attack. In spite of the existence of battle damage holes, the effect on the control force was insignificant when the damage size was not large enough.

  • This study presents a numerical model that can simulate changes of particle size distribution (PSD) of PCB-contaminated coastal sediments. The developed model has one spatial dimension including sedimentation and vortical dispersion as well as coagulation. The reason for considering the vortical transport mechanisms is to calculate residence time of the particles. Using the model and Initial PSD data based on actual coastal sediments contaminated with PCBs, this study shows results of model simulations. Within 48 hours of the simulation time, the PSD changed significantly and the particles were removed from water in different rates between different particle sizes. It also shows that coagulation can act an important role in this process. The model may be useful in assessing the range of resuspended sediments that can pollute neighboring areas during environmental remediation projects such as dredging.

  • A new off-surface visualization method of using the micro water droplet and laser beam sheet was presented. About a size of 5 to TEX>$10\mu\textrm{m}$ micro water droplet could be made from home-style ultrasonic humidifier, A 3 W Argon ion laser and cylindrical lens were used to generate a laser beam sheet, which interrogate specific cross section of the vortical flow field. Application of this new visualization method was conducted in KAFA small-sized low speed wind tunnel of having the test section of 0TEX>$0.9 m(W){\times}$0.9 m(H){\times}2.1 m(L)$$$. Visualization results show this method relatively easy and safe flow visualization method for wind tunnel testing. Moreover, this method is also make up for the disadvantage of smoke visualization, and can be applied to higher flow velocity range than that of smoke visualization.

  • R/C helicopter has been used to several fields of military affairs, investigation searching and toys because it has small size hovering and vortical take-off characteristics etc. Therefore it needs more realizable control method. The paper introduces simulation and experimental results for control of a helicopter training simulator by self tuning control method. To realize the disturbance rejection and the given reference tracking, a least common multiple polynomial between the reference and disturbance model polynomials is operated to the plant model. The effectiveness of the method is shown by simulation and experimental results for a helicopter training simulator with two degree of freedom.

  • There are many benefits such as increased areal density, reduced power consumption, applied smaller size and improved shock resistance in Load/Unload(L/UL) mechanism. It has been the key technology of developing small form factor hard disk drive used in portable digital devices. The main objectives of L/UL are no slider-disk contact and faster L/UL process. For realizing those, we must consider many design parameters in L/UL systems. In this paper, we focus on the effects of ramp profile. We can investigate dynamic characteristics of suspension tap and slider on ramp during unloading process experimentally. In special, we examine the effects of vortical velocities, ramp slopes and disk vibrations. As the result of these experiments, we propose design criteria of advanced ramp profile for good unloading performance.
