This work numerically investigates the effects of Reynolds number ReD (= 100 - 150), cross-sectional aspect ratio AR = ( 0.25 -1.0), and attack angle α (= 0° - 90°) on the forces, Strouhal number, and wake of an elliptical cylinder, where ReD is based on the freestream velocity and cylinder cross-section height normal to the freestream flow, AR is the ratio of the minor axis to the major axis of the elliptical cylinder, and α is the angle between the cylinder major axis and the incoming flow. At ReD = 100, two distinct wake structures are identified, namely 'Steady wake' (pattern I) and 'Karman wake followed by a steady wake (pattern II)' when AR and α are varied in the ranges specified. When ReD is increased to 150, an additional wake pattern, 'Karman wake followed by secondary wake (pattern III)' materializes. Pattern I is characterized by two steady bubbles forming behind the cylinder. Pattern II features Karman vortex street immediately behind the cylinder, with the vortex street transmuting to two steady shear layers downstream. Inflection angle αi = 32°, 37.5° and 45° are identified for AR = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75, respectively, where the wake asymmetry is the greatest. The αi effectively distinguishes the dependence on α and AR of force and vortex shedding frequency at either ReD. In Pattern III, the Karman street forming behind the cylinder is modified to a secondary vortex street. At a given AR and α, ReD = 150 renders higher fluctuating lift and Strouhal number than ReD = 100.
For long slender offshore structures, such as cables and pipe lines, their interaction with surrounding fluid flow becomes an important issue for global design of ocean systems. We employ a long circular cylinder as a representative case of slender offshore structure. A flexibly mounted cylinder in cross-flow generates complex vortex shedding and results in oscillation of the structure. In this paper, flow behind a circular cylinder at Re=100 is simulated. The vortex shedding pattern and flow induced motion are examined in the cross flow configuration as well as with various yaw-angled configurations. The "Lock-in" phenomenon is also observed when reduced velocity is approximately 4.0. The MAC Grid system, which is the typical grid system for Cartesian mesh and pressure correction methods, are used for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Predictor/Corrector method is applied for obtaining a non-linear response of structure at the flexibly mounted. The existance and motion of the body is represented by the immersed boundary technique.
Two-dimensional Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) was carried out to investigate the uniform flow over a twin-box bridge deck (TBBD) with various gap ratios of L/C=5.1%, 12.8%, 25.6%, 38.5%, 73.3% and 108.2% (L: the gap-width between two girders, C: the chord length of a single girder) at Reynolds number, Re=4×104. The aerodynamic coefficients of the prototype deck with gap ratio of 73.3% obtained from the present simulation were compared with the previous experimental and numerical data for different attack angles to validate the present numerical method. Particular attention is devoted to the fluctuating pressure distribution and forces, shear layer reattachment position, wake velocity and flow pattern in order to understand the effects of gap ratio on dynamic flow interaction with the twin-box bridge deck. The flow structure is sensitive to the gap, thus a change in L/C thus leads to single-side shedding regime at L/C≤25.6%, and co-shedding regime at L/C≥35.8% distinguished by drastic changes in flow structure and vortex shedding. The gap-ratio-dependent Strouhal number gradually increases from 0.12 to 0.27, though the domain frequencies of vortices shedding from two girders are identical. The mean and fluctuating pressure distributions is significantly influenced by the flow pattern, and thus the fluctuating lift force on two girders increases or decreases with increasing of L/C in the single-side shedding and co-shedding regime, respectively. In addition, the flow mechanisms for the variation in aerodynamic performance with respect to gap ratios are discussed in detail.

The flowfield behind two cylinders and flow-induced noise generated from the cylinders in various arrangement are numerically investigated based on the finite difference lattice Boltzmann model with 21 velocity bits. which is introduced a flexible specific heat ${\gamma}$ to simulate diatomic gases like air. In an isolated cylinder with two type of mesh. some flow parameters such as Strouhal number $S_t$ and acoustic pressure ${\Delta}p$ simulated from the solution are given and quantitatively compared with those provided the previous works. The effects of the center-to-center pitch ratio $L_{cc}/d=2.0$ in staggered circular cylinders as shown in Fig. 1 and angles of incidence ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}(T_{cc}/d=0.5)$, $45^{\circ}(T_{cc}/d =0.707)$ and $60^{\circ}\;(T_{cc}/d=0.866)$, respectively, are studied. Our analysis focuses on the small-scale instabilities of vortex shedding, which occurs in staggered arrangement. With the results of drag $C_d$ and lift $C_l$ coefficients and vorticity contours. the mechanisms of the interference phenomenon and its interaction with the two-dimensional vortical structures are present in the flowfields under $Re\;{\le}\;200$. The results show that we successively capture very small pressure fluctuations, with the same frequency of vortex shedding, much smaller than the whole pressure fluctuation around pairs of circular cylinders. The upstream cylinder behaves like an isolated single cylinder, while the downstream one experiences wake-induced flutter. It is expected that, therefore, the relative position of the downstream cylinder has significant effects on the flow-induce noise, hydrodynamic force and vortex shedding characteristics of the cylinders.
We investigate 20 post-coronal mass ejection (CME) blobs formed in the post-CME current sheet (CS) that were observed by K-Cor on 2017 September 10. By visual inspection of the trajectories and projected speed variations of each blob, we find that all blobs except one show irregular "zigzag" trajectories resembling transverse oscillatory motions along the CS, and have at least one oscillatory pattern in their instantaneous radial speeds. Their oscillation periods are ranging from 30 to 91 s and their speed amplitudes from 128 to 902 km s-1. Among 19 blobs, 10 blobs have experienced at least two cycles of radial speed oscillations with different speed amplitudes and periods, while 9 blobs undergo one oscillation cycle. To examine whether or not the apparent speed oscillations can be explained by vortex shedding, we estimate the quantitative parameter of vortex shedding, the Strouhal number, by using the observed lateral widths, linear speeds, and oscillation periods of the blobs. We then compare our estimates with theoretical and experimental results from MHD simulations and fluid dynamic experiments. We find that the observed Strouhal numbers range from 0.2 to 2.1, consistent with those (0.15-3.0) from fluid dynamic experiments of bluff spheres, while they are higher than those (0.15-0.25) from MHD simulations of cylindrical shapes. We thus find that blobs formed in a post-CME CS undergo kinematic oscillations caused by fluid dynamic vortex shedding. The vortex shedding is driven by the interaction of the outward-moving blob having a bluff spherical shape with the background plasma in the post-CME CS.
ANSYS multi-physics software was applied to solve the coupled dynamic problem related to a full-scale TLP foundation for floating wind turbines. In this coupled dynamics simulation, the forced oscillation imposed on the tethers' top resulting from the sway of the wind turbine platform and the self-excited vortex-induced vibration (VIV) along the tether span have been taken into account. The stability of this tensioned tether system has been validated in the form of separate static and dynamic analyses. The dynamic characteristics of the tensioned tether linked to the floating wind turbine were analyzed by the resultant modal form and its corresponding vortex shedding pattern. The calculated result shows that even a slight forced oscillation imposed on the tethers' top leads to the VIV amplification and enhances the risk of instability in the case of low pretension. It is also found that the "synchronization" would be aggravated when the top tension decreases and the "2P" vortex shedding mode takes place. The increased top tension imposed on the tethers contributes to the stability of the tensioned legs by diminishing the oscillation amplitude markedly.
When a circular cylinder is placed at the center of a slot burner nozzle, once stable Woflhard-Parker type laminar lean premixed flame is changed to an oscillating flame with self-induced noise. The wrinkled flame surface showed the same pattern and frequency of the Karman vortex street at the downstream of a circular cylinder. The interaction of flame with Karman vortex street is observed to be responsible for flame oscillation. The measured flame oscillation frequency is very similar to the estimated Karman vortex shedding frequency based on the St-Re relationship of the flow past circular cylinder, which could be considered as a strong evidence for the interaction between laminar pre-mixed flame and a Karman vortex street. As Reynolds number increases oscillation frequency decreases and the self-induced noise level increases as well as the flame front is more severly wrinkled. This result suggests that the flame/vortex interaction becomes more active at higher Re.
The flow-excited Helmholtz resonance phenomenon was investigated numerically using Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes approach. The fundamental cause of the Helmholtz resonance phenomenon is known as shedding of a single discrete vortex from orifice edge that travels during one period of the oscillation. In this study, serrated deflector, which is biomimetic design of the owl's feather, is used to split a single vortex into small vortices. Rectangular deflector and serrated deflector are compared with numerical results of pressure and streamline inside the cavity. Consequently, the serration breaks the shedding period of vortex core and eliminates the resonance. Also, it changes the flow pattern in according to the location of different serration height. By making inflows and outflows occur simultaneously in spanwise direction in the cavity, the period of Helmholtz resonance disappears. Comparing between rectangular deflector and serrated deflector, the serrated deflector can deal with the Helmholtz resonance more effectively.

Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) is a typical flow-structure interference phenomenon which causes an unsteady flow pattern due to vortex shedding at or near the structure's natural frequency leading to resonant vibrations. VIV may cause premature fatigue failure of marine risers and pipelines. A test model was carried out to investigate the role of a stationary fairing by varying the caudal horn angle to suppress riser VIV taking into account the effect of wake interference. The test results show significant reduction of VIV for risers disposed in tandem and side-by-side. In general, fairing with a caudal horn of $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ are efficient in quelling VIV in risers. The results also reveal fairing can reduce the drag load of risers arranged side-by-side. For the tandem configuration, a fairing can reduce the drag load of an upstream riser, but will enlarge the drag force of the downstream riser.
