  • The performance of gas turbine engines is affected by instabilities, like as rotating stall and/or surge. Rotating Stall is a transient intermediate stage between normal flow and complete flow breakdown leading to engine surge. Rotating Stall is associated with large amplitude nonaxisymmetric flow variations rotating around the compressor annulus. This paper presents the evolutions of stall propagation in a compressor cascade by numerical analysis. The flow phenomena due to stall cells and propagation speed are examined using 2 dimensional Navier - Stokes equations.

  • A model system allowing the experimental determination of the spin-motive force from the vortex gyration motion in a circular nanodisk is presented. It can be one way to get experimental detection of the spin-motive force and it will provide an important tool to study the relationship between the charge and spin transports in ferromagnetic system.

  • The development of marine technology is expected to increase the demand for marine plants because of increasing oil prices. Therefore, there is also expected to be an increase in the demand for cylindrical structures such as URF (umbilical, riser, flowline) structures and spars, which are used operating in various seas. However, a cylindrical structure experiences vortex induced motion (VIM) in a current. In particular, for risers and umbilicals, it is important to identify the characteristics of the VIM because interference between structures can occur. In addition, various studies have been conducted to reduce VIM because it is the cause of fatigue damage to structures. The helical strake, which was developed for VIM reduction, has an excellent VIM reduction performance, but is difficult to install on structures and has a negative effect on heave motion. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to supplement the shortcomings of the helical strake and develop a high-performance reduction device. In the reduction device developed in this study, a string is placed around the structure inside the flow, causing vibration. The vibration of this string causes a small turbulence in the flow field, reducing the VIM effect on the structure. Finally, in this study, the 2-DOF motion characteristics of models without a suppression device, models with a helical strake, and models with a string were investigated, and their reduction performances were compared through model tests.

  • Fluid-elastic instability in an air-water two-phase cross-flow has been experimentally investigated using two different arrays of straight tube bundles: normal square (NS) array and rotated square (RS) array tube bundles with the same pitch-to-diameter ratio of 1.633. Experiments have been performed over wide ranges of mass flux and void fraction. The quantitative tube vibration displacement was measured using a pair of strain gages and the detailed orbit of the tube motion was analyzed from high-speed video recordings. The present study provides the flow pattern, detailed tube vibration response, damping ratio, hydrodynamic mass, and the fluid-elastic instability for each tube bundle. Tube vibration characteristics of the RS array tube bundle in the two-phase flow condition were quite different from those of the NS array tube bundle with respect to the vortex shedding induced vibration and the shape of the oval orbit of the tube motion at the fluid-elastic instability as well as the fluid-elastic instability constant.

  • The dynamic behaviour of a marine riser was studied theoretically and experimentally. In linear analysis, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the riser were obtained from the experiment and they were found to be in good agreement with theoretical results by using a simple asymptotic formula. In nonlinear ananlysis including viscous drag and large displacement, a numerical-perturbation technique based on the derived linear asymptotic solutions is used to predict the displacements and stresses of the riser in harmonic motion. These results were also compared with experimental data and found to be in general in good agreement.

  • The goal of this paper is to investigate the generation characteristics of the main impulsive noise sources generated by the supersonic flow discharging from a muzzle. For this, this paper investigates two fundamental mechanisms to sound generation in shocked flows: shock motion and shock deformation. Shock motion is modeled numerically by examining the interaction of a sound wave with a shock. The numerical approach is validated by comparison with results obtained by linear theory for a small disturbance case. Shock deformations are modeled numerically by examining the interaction of a vortex ring with a blast wave. A numerical approach of a dispersion-relation-preserving(DRP) scheme is used to investigate the sound generation and propagation by their interactions in near-field.

  • Numerical flow computations around an aeroelastic 3D square cylinder immersed in the turbulent boundary layer are shown. Present computational code can be characterized by three numerical aspects which are 1) the method of artificial compressibility is adopted for the incompressible flow computations, 2) the domain decomposition technique is used to get better grid point distributions, and 3) to achieve the conservation law both in time and space when the flow is computed a with moving and transformed grid, the time derivatives of metrics are evaluated using the time-and-space volume. To provide time-dependant inflow boundary conditions satisfying prescribed time-averaged velocity profiles, a convenient way for generating inflow turbulence is proposed. The square cylinder is modeled as a 4-lumped-mass system and it vibrates with two-degree of freedom of heaving motion. Those blocks which surround the cylinder are deformed according to the cylinder's motion. Vigorous oscillations occur as the vortex shedding frequency approaches cylinder's natural frequencies.

  • Dump combustor is a combustor having a dump plane to make coherent structures. A non-premixed flame dump combustor of simple geometry was constructed. We conducted basic experiments such as frequency response on the combustor to confirm the characteristics of the phenomena as a typical dump combustion and unsteady combustion. Furthermore we visualized the flame front behavior by CH chemiluminescence and high speed motion analysis. In spite of the lack of another data such as velocity, species concentration and temperature, the results showed not only the periodic motion of flame front but the ignition process of vortex ring flame. Also we could check out Rayleigh criterion by combining the visualization data with the pressure data.

  • An oscillating body motion with extremely large amplitude has been studied using the viscous flow solver. Time simulations of oscillating ship hull in prescribed heave and roll motions are presented using RANS method with FAM approach (Chen, 1995). For viscous flows, laminar flow and turbulent flow with $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ model are considered and compared. The viscous flow solver of RANS method is performed together with a Chimera type of multi-block grid system to demonstrate the advantage of accurate and efficient zonal approach. In the present study, effects of viscosity and oscillation degree are discussed using Re=1000 and Re=1000000. Large motion of oscillating body shows clear vortex propagation that is not possible for inviscid flow to present.
