구 후류에 미치는 유동장 밀도 성층화 영향 전산 해석 (Numerical Study for Effects of Density-Stratification on Wake Behind a Sphere)

  • Stratified flow past a three-dimensional obstacle such as a sphere has been a long-lasting subject of geophysical, environmental and engineering fluid dynamics. In order to investigate the effect of the stratification on the near wake, in particular, the unsteady vortex formation behind a sphere, numerical simulations of stratified flows past a sphere are conducted. The time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a three-dimensional finite element method and a modified explicit time integration scheme. Laminar flow regime is considered, and linear stratification of density is assumed under Bossiness approximation. The computed results include the characteristics of the near wake and the unsteady vortex shedding. With a strong stratification, the separation on the sphere is suppressed and the wake structure behind the sphere becomes planar, resembling that behind a vertical cylinder.

  • The fluid propulsion mechanism of two oscillating flat plates is studied numerically using a discrete vortex method. Presently, the flat plates are assumed to be rigid. To analyze the closely coupled aerodynamic interference between the flat plates, a core addition scheme and a vortex core model are combined together. A calculated wake pattern for a flat plate in heaving oscillation motion is compared with the flow visualization. The effect of wake shapes on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flat plate in pitching oscillation is investigated. The velocity profiles behind the flat plates in pitching oscillations are plotted to investigate the possible thrust generation mechanism.

  • The hydrodynamic lift and moment acting on the bodies of revolution with pointed-end were calculated by the surface discrete vortex method. It was found, by direct computation, that the lift normal to the on-coming flow can be generated by introducing the shed-vortex to the unless otherwise purely potential model. The value of the destabilizing moment, which is called Munk moment, is reduced by the shed-vortex model, resulting in better agreement with the existing experimental values.

A Numerical Study on the Bubble Noise and the Tip Vortex Cavitation Inception

  • This paper presents a numerical study on tip vortex cavitation inception predictions based on non-spherical bubble dynamics including splitting and jet noise emission. A brief summary of the numerical method and its validation against a laboratory experiment are presented. The behavior of bubble nuclei is studied in a tip vortex flow field at two Reynolds numbers, provided by a viscous flow solver. The bubble behavior is simulated by an axisymmetric potential flow solver with the effect of surrounding viscous flow taken into account using one way coupling. The effects of bubble nucleus size and Reynolds number are studied. An effort to model the bubble splitting at lower cavitation numbers is also described.

유동가시화를 통한 타원형날개주위 유동연구 (Study on the Flow Around an Elliptic Wing Using Flow Visualization Technique)

  • NACA0020 단면을 갖는 타원형 날개끝에서 발생되어 전개되는 Tip Vortex를 연구하기 위하여 날개표면과 후류에서의 유동특성을 조사하였다. 날개표면 유동은 Tufts법과 캐비테이션 관찰로 분석되었으며 날개표면 압력계측으로 유동가시화 결과를 보완하였다. 연구결과 강력한 스팬방향 압력구배가 Tip Vortex 생성에 결정적 영향을 줌과 아울러 날개 양쪽면에서의 유동이 공히 보오텍스의 생성에 기여함을 알 수 있었다. 한편, 자세한 Tip Vortex의 구조를 보기위하여 캐비테이션 관찰, Laser Sheet 기법에 의한 보오텍스 단면가시화 및 유속계측이 실시되었는데 보오텍스의 형상과 강도는 날개의 받음각에 지배되어 나타났다. 날개끝 유동의 전반적인 특성은 비점성유동 가정하에서 사용되는 보오텍스 모델링을 보완할 목적으로 분석되었다.

Aeroelastic stability analysis of a bridge deck with added vanes using a discrete vortex method

  • A two dimensional discrete vortex method (DIVEX) has been developed at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Glasgow, to predict unsteady and incompressible flow fields around closed bodies. The basis of the method is the discretisation of the vorticity field, rather than the velocity field, into a series of vortex particles that are free to move in the flow field that the particles collectively induce. This paper gives a brief description of the numerical implementation of DIVEX and presents the results of calculations on a recent suspension bridge deck section. The results from both the static and flutter analysis of the main deck in isolation are in good agreement with experimental data. A brief study of the effect of flow control vanes on the aeroelastic stability of the bridge is also presented and the results confirm previous analytical and experimental studies. The aeroelastic study is carried out firstly using aerodynamic derivatives extracted from the DIVEX simulations. These results are then assessed further by presenting results from full time-dependent aeroelastic solutions for the original deck and one of the vane cases. In general, the results show good qualitative and quantitative agreement with results from experimental data and demonstrate that DIVEX is a useful design tool in the field of wind engineering.

Empirical decomposition method for modeless component and its application to VIV analysis

  • Aiming at accurately distinguishing modeless component and natural vibration mode terms from data series of nonlinear and non-stationary processes, such as Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV), a new empirical mode decomposition method has been developed in this paper. The key innovation related to this technique concerns the method to decompose modeless component from non-stationary process, characterized by a predetermined 'maximum intrinsic time window' and cubic spline. The introduction of conceptual modeless component eliminates the requirement of using spurious harmonics to represent nonlinear and non-stationary signals and then makes subsequent modal identification more accurate and meaningful. It neither slacks the vibration power of natural modes nor aggrandizes spurious energy of modeless component. The scale of the maximum intrinsic time window has been well designed, avoiding energy aliasing in data processing. Finally, it has been applied to analyze data series of vortex-induced vibration processes. Taking advantage of this newly introduced empirical decomposition method and mode identification technique, the vibration analysis about vortex-induced vibration becomes more meaningful.

수직수문하의 경계층흐름 (Boundary Layer Flow Under a Sluice Gate)

  • 수직수문하의 경계층 흐름(boundary layer flow)이 경계고정좌표계(Boundary- Fitted Coordinate System)에서 무작위 소용돌이 판 방법(Random Vortex Sheet Method)과 요소내 소용돌이 방법(Vortex-in-Cell Method)을 이용하여 수치계산되었다. 수치해에 의한 수문을 따라 형성된 경계층이 수축률의 실험자료와 비점성이론에 의한 그 결과의 차이를 유발하는 주원인인 것으로 보여진다. 그 동안 주원인일 것으로 믿어왔던 바닥면 경게층의 역할은 수문면의 그 것보다는 적은 것으로 수치계산되었다. 또한 차원해석을 통하여 경계층 흐름에 의한 수축율의 그 차이가 수문 길이의 평방근에 반비례하는 것으로 추정되었으며, 이는 Benjamin(1956)에 의하여 분석된 것과 결국 동일한 것임이 밝혀졌다. 수치모델과 차원해석에 따른 결과는 Benjamin(1956)에 의해 얻어진 수축률의 실허미와 비교하여 만족할 만하였다.

  • This paper systematically investigates and correlates pressure fluctuation and nominal wake characteristics according to the angle of the vortex generators by introducing the angle adjustment method of the Vortex Generator (VG). The vortex generators are installed at the port and starboard of a model ship. The vortex generator performance test is executed on a model ship installed in the Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT) and the angle of VG is freely controlled by a servo motor. The systematic test results for the vortex generator show that the well-designed VG is an effective appendage for reducing the pressure fluctuation level and shows the direction of VG's angular design optimization.

발전소용 CTCS 내 Vortex Promoter 설계 변수에 따른 세척용 스폰지 볼 회수성능 분석 (Analysis of Cleaning Sponge Ball Recovery Performance According to Vortex Promoter Design Parameters in CTCS for Power Plant)

  • This study analyzes the flow characteristics and sponge ball recovery performance in a ball strainer according to vortex promoter design variables through flow-particle analysis based on actual experiments to derive a method for improving the recovery rate of cleaning sponge balls of CTCS applied to existing power plants. Based on the ball strainer in CTCS used in the power plant, the experiment was conducted by changing the design factor of the improved shape. In addition, flow and particle analysis were performed under the same conditions as the experiment to numerically the flow characteristics and recovery rate in the ball strainer according to the design factor of the vortex promoter. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the recovery performance was improved by about 3% by changing the design height of the Vortex promoter. And when comparing the difference between maximum and minimum recovery rate, it was found that the effect on the recovery performance increased slightly according to the distance condition compared to the vortex promoter design height condition.
