The flow past a circular cylinder forced to vibrate transversely is numerically simulated by solving the two-dimensional Wavier-Stokes equations modified by the vibration velocity of a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of 164. The higher-order finite difference scheme is employed for the spatial discretization along with the second order Adams-Bashforth and the first order backward-Euler time integration. The calculated cylinder vibration frequency is between 0.60 and 1.30 times of the natural vortex-shedding frequency. The calculated oscillation amplitude extends to $25\%$ of the cylinder diameter and in the case of the lock-in region it is $60\%$. It is made clear that the cylinder oscillation has influence on the wake pattern, the time histories of the drag and lift forces, power spectral density and phase diagrams, etc. It is found that these results include both the periodic (lock-in) and the quasi-periodic (non-lock-in) state. The vortex shedding frequency equals the driving frequency in the lock-in region but is independent in the non-lock-in region. The mean drag and the maximum lift coefficient increase with the increase of the forcing amplitude in the lock-in state. The lock-in boundaries are also established from the present direct numerical simulation.

Birds and insects flap their wings to fly in the air and they can change their wing motions to do steering and maneuvering. Therefore, we created various wing motions with the parameters which affected flapping motion and evaluated the aerodynamic characteristics about those cases in this study. As the wing rotational velocity was fast and the rotational timing was advanced, the measured aerodynamic forces showed drastic increase near the end of stroke. The mean lift coefficient was increased until angle of attack of $50^{\circ}$ and showed the maximum value of 1.0. The maximum mean lift to drag ratio took place at angle of attack of $20^{\circ}$. Flow fields were also visualized around the wing using particle image velocimetry (PIV). From the flow visualization, leading-edge vortex was not shed at mid-stroke until angle of attack of $50^{\circ}$. But it was begun to shed at angle of attack of $60^{\circ}$.
This work investigates Reynolds number Re (= 50 - 200) effects on the flows around a single cylinder and the two tandem (center-to-center spacing L⁎= L/D = 4) cylinders, each of a diameter D. Vorticity structures, Strouhal numbers, and time-mean and fluctuating forces are presented and discussed. For the single cylinder, with increasing Re in the range examined, the vorticity magnitude, Strouhal number and fluctuating lift all monotonically rise but time-mean drag, vortex formation length, and lateral distance between the two rows of vortices all shrink. For the two tandem cylinders, the increase in Re leads to the formation of three distinct flows, namely reattachment flow (50 ≤ Re ≤ 75), transition flow (75 < Re < 100), and coshedding flow (100 ≤ Re ≤ 200). The reattachment flow at Re = 50 is steady. When Re is increased from 75 to 200, the Strouhal number of the two cylinders, jumping from 0.113 to 0.15 in the transition flow regime, swells to 0.188. The two-cylinder flow is more sensitive to Re than the single cylinder flow. Fluctuating lift is greater for the downstream cylinder than the upstream cylinder while time-mean drag is higher for the upstream cylinder than for the other. The time-mean drags of the upstream cylinder and single cylinder behaves similar to each other, both declining with increasing Re.
Missile and fighter aircraft have been challenged by low restoring nose-down pitching moment at high angle of attach. The consequence of weak nose-down pitching moment can be resulting in a deep stall condition. Especially, the pressure oscillation has a huge effect on noise generation, structure damage, aerodynamic performance and safety, because the flow has strong unsteadiness at high angle of attack. In this paper, the unsteady aerodynamics coefficients were analyzed at high angle of attack up to 50 degrees around two dimensional NACA0012 airfoil. The two dimensional unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equation with a LES turbulent model was calculated by OHOC (Optimized High-Order Compact) scheme. The flow conditions are Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of $10^5$. The lift, drag, pressure, entropy distribution, etc. are analyzed according to the angle of attack. The results of average lift coefficients are compared with other results according to the angle of attack. From a certain high angle of attack, the strong vortex formed by the leading edge are flowing downstream as like Karman vortex around a circular cylinder. The primary and secondary oscillating frequencies are analyzed by the effects of these unsteady aerodynamic characteristics.

We investigated the aerodynamic characteristics of a three-dimensional (3D) wing with an endplate in the vicinity of the free surface by solving incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the turbulence closure model. The endplate causes a blockage effect on the flow, and an additional viscous effect especially near the endplate. These combined effects of the endplate significantly reduce the magnitudes of the velocities under the lower surface of the wing, thereby enhancing aerodynamic performance in terms of the force coefficients. The maximum lift-to-drag ratio of a wing with an endplate is increased 46% compared to that of wing without an endplate at the lowest clearance. The tip vortex of a wing-with-endplate (WWE) moved laterally to a greater extent than that of a wing-without-endplate (WOE). This causes a decrease in the induced drag, resulting in a reduction in the total drag.

Oscillating foil propulsion, the engineering application of fish-like movement of a hydrofoil, has received in recent decades as a possible competitor for propellers. The oscillating foil produces an effective angle of attack, resulting in a normal force vector with thrust and lift components, and it can be expected to be a new highly effective propulsion system. We have explored propulsion hydrodynamics as a concept in wake flow pattern. The present study has been examined various conditions such as oscillating frequencies and amplitudes in NACA0010 profile. Flow visualizations showed that high thrust was associated with the generation of moderately strong vortices, which subsequently combine with trailing-edge vorticity leading to the formation of a reverse $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ vortex street. Vortex generation was inherent to jet production and playeda fundamental role in the wake dynamics. And it was shown that the strong thrust coefficient obtained as the Strouhal number was larger.

This paper investigates the effects of Reynolds number (Re) on the aerodynamic characteristics of a twin-deck bridge. A 1:36 scale sectional model of a twin girder bridge was tested using the Wall of Wind (WOW) open jet wind tunnel facility at Florida International University (FIU). Static tests were performed on the model, instrumented with pressure taps and load cells, at high wind speeds with Re ranging from $1.3{\times}10^6$ to $6.1{\times}10^6$ based on the section width. Results show that the section was almost insensitive to Re when pitched to negative angles of attack. However, mean and fluctuating pressure distributions changed noticeably for zero and positive wind angles of attack while testing at different Re regimes. The pressure results suggested that with the Re increase, a larger separation bubble formed on the bottom surface of the upstream girder accompanied with a narrower wake region. As a result, drag coefficient decreased mildly and negative lift coefficient increased. Flow modification due to the Re increase also helped in distributing forces more equally between the two girders. The bare deck section was found to be prone to vortex shedding with limited dependence on the Re. Based on the observations, vortex mitigation devices attached to the bottom surface were effective in inhibiting vortex shedding, particularly at lower Re regime.
A numerical scheme based on a mode superposition method is presented for the dynamic response analysis of a top-tensioned riser (TTR) under sheared current loads. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the TTR have been calculated analytically for a beam with a slowly varying tension and pinned-pinned boundary conditions at the top and bottom ends. The lift coefficients and corresponding amplitudes used to estimate the vortex-induced modal force and damping for each mode were predicted via iterative calculations based on the input and output power balancing concept. Here, the power-in regions were controlled by the normal distribution function, for which the center was coincident with the lock -in location by local vortex-shedding, and the range was defined by the constant standard deviation for the reduced velocity by the local current speed. Finally, dynamic responses such as root-mean-squared displacement and stress were calculated using the mode superposition technique. In order to verify the presented scheme, a numerical calculation was performed for a TTR under an arbitrary linearly sheared current and linearly varying tension. A comparison with the results of the existing software showed that the presented scheme could give reliable and feasible solutions. Case studies were performed to investigate the effects of various current loads and tensions.

In this study, lumped-vortex element method and thin airfoil theory were used to analyze aerodynamic characteristics of airfoils with relative motion that had camber lines of NACA $44{\times}{\times}$ airfoil in 2-dimensional unsteady incompressible potential flow. Velocity disturbance due to airfoil was calculated by lumped-vortex element model and force distribution on airfoil by unsteady Bernoulli's equation. Variables in relative motion were considered the period p, the amplitude of flapping $A_f$ and pitching $A_p$, and the phase difference between flapping and pitching ${\phi}_p$ and the angle of attack ${\alpha}$. Due to movement of an airfoil, dag was induced in 2-dimensional unsteady incompressible potential flow. The numerical results show that the aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoil with flapping and pitching at the same time are illustrated. Especially the mean lift coefficient became smaller, but drag coefficient became larger.

The effects of free surface on vortex shedding phenomena around a bluff body were studied by both numerical simulation and flow visualization experiments. A vortex method, which approximates the vorticity field as the sum of discrete vortices; was used for the numerical simulation. Flow visualization experiments were performed in the KRISO cavitation tunnel. Hydrogen bubble was used as illumination material. Free surface elevation was also measured during experiments. The hydrodynamic drag and lift were predicted by numerical simulation. The predicted period of vortex shedding was compared with the results of experiments.
